    Polish soldiers have been participating in peacekeeping and stabilization missions around the world for several decades under the auspices of the UN, OSCE, NATO and the EU. They were first sent to Korea in 1953 to oversee a ceasefire between the North and South Koreas. Since then, nearly 70,000 Polish troops have taken part in 58 peace and humanitarian multinational missions on different continents (SKMP ONZ, 2019), which required from them great skills to cooperate with soldiers from other countries, to overcome cultural barriers,  as well as adaptation to difficult, often completely different than in Europe, climatic conditions,  and to create a system of safeguards and procedures against dangerous tropical diseases. Due to these reasons, biological safety, i.e.,  medical, sanitary-hygienic, and anti-epidemic security of the contingent, plays a significant role in every mission because it allows the soldiers and civilian personnel stay healthy in an unfavorable and different climate and environmental conditions.

    Diving locations can pose various risks to divers. Health problems can be caused by, among other things, pathogenic microorganisms as well as flora and fauna endemic to the region. This paper discusses the consequences of exposure to biological pathogens endemic to the Red Sea region and possible preventive measures that can be taken before and during a diving expedition.
    Akweny nurkowe mogą stwarzać różnego typu zagrożenia dla osób nurkujących. Problemy zdrowotne mogą być spowodowane m. in. drobnoustrojami chorobotwórczymi oraz florą i fauną występującymi endemicznie w danym regionie. W pracy omówiono konsekwencje narażenia na biologiczne czynniki chorobotwórcze, endemicznie występujące w rejonie Morza Czerwonego oraz możliwości działań profilaktycznych przed i podczas wyprawy nurkowej.

    In the paper bioterrorist threats have been presented. Historical background and possible methods of attacks have been described. The most dangerous pathogens and disease entities have been classified. Selected methods of detection and identification of biological weapon have been presented. The wireless system for threats monitoring — developed at Gdansk University of Technology — has been described.
    W artykule przedstawiono zagrożenia związane z bioterroryzmem. Zaprezentowano rys historyczny oraz opisano możliwe drogi przeprowadzania takich ataków. Sklasyfikowano najgroźniejsze patogeny i zaprezentowano najniebezpieczniejsze jednostki chorobowe. Przedstawiono wybrane metody detekcji i identyfikacji zagrożeń bronią biologiczną. Zaprezentowano opracowany na Politechnice Gdańskiej system bezprzewodowego monitoringu zagrożeń bezpieczeństwa, który może wpłynąć na poziom bezpieczeństwa poprzez wczesne wykrywanie zagrożeń biologicznych.

    The purpose of this article is to explain the potential threat posed by the use of a biological agent as part of so-called hybrid operations. Bioterrorism, as a tool at the disposal of states as well as terrorist organizations, is a threat that can cause multiple adverse effects. Their extent depends, among other things, on the type of pathogen, the manner and scale of application, and the effectiveness of services aimed at ensuring biosecurity. Biological weapons are relatively very inexpensive and inflict very severe losses on the adversary, including in economic terms. Its advantage is that it is difficult to detect and that the mere threat of the use of pathogens is capable of completely altering the behavior of the parties involved in the conflict and its course. In addition, it is very difficult to identify the threat itself and predict the extent of the attack. In describing the pathogens used in biological warfare, the author uses their classification developed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. It is concluded that in order to prevent the biological, psychological, economic and political effects of bioterrorism, it is necessary to create monitoring and early warning systems and organize periodic training for the army and medical services.
    Celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie potencjalnego zagrożenia związanego z użyciem czynnika biologicznego jako elementu tzw. działań hybrydowych. Bioterroryzm jako narzędzie pozostające w dyspozycji państw jak i organizacji terrorystycznych stanowi zagrożenie mogące wywołać wielorakie niepożądane skutki. Ich zasięg jest uzależniony między innymi od rodzaju patogenu, sposobu i skali zastosowania, oraz od efektywności służb mających na celu zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa biologicznego. Broń biologiczna jest relatywnie bardzo tania i przynosi bardzo dotkliwe dla przeciwnika straty, także ekonomiczne. Jej atutem jest trudna wykrywalność a także to, że sama groźba użycia czynników chorobotwórczych jest w stanie całkowicie odmienić zachowanie stron konfliktu i jego przebieg. Ponadto bardzo trudna jest sama identyfikacja zagrożenia i przewidywanie zasięgu rażenia. W opisie patogenów stosowanych w wojnie biologicznej autorka posługuje się ich klasyfikacją opracowaną przez Centrum Kontroli Chorób i Zapobiegania w Atlancie. W konkluzji stwierdzono, że w celu zapobiegania biologicznym, psychologicznym, ekonomicznym i politycznym skutkom bioterroryzmu, konieczne jest stworzenie systemów monitoringu i wczesnego ostrzegania oraz organizacja okresowych szkoleń dla armii i służb medycznych.

    In the paper the risks to which the patient is exposed while receiving a medical service have been analyzed. All treatments related to blood collection from the patient deserve much attention. It consists of a number of principles and procedures regarding the patient's health safety as well as safety of a person providing this service. Prevention and preventive actions in the aspect of patient safety in the face of threats resulting from the nature of medical services provided are a priority. Due to preventive action it is possible to avoid the effects of exposure to biological hazards, including the possibility of becoming infected with HIV, HCV and HBV. In the paper the results of a questionnaire survey carried out in selected blood stations of the Śląskie Voivodeship have been presented. The questionnaire is able to collect the information about patient awareness on the risks of the medical service (blood collection).

    Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie zjawiska bioterroryzmu i związanych z nim zagrożeń w perspektywie globalnej oraz krajowej (polskiej). Doświadczenia związane z użyciem czynników biologicznych oraz międzynarodowe konwencje i procesy rozbrojeniowe spowodowały, że ten typ broni pozostaje zakazany w większości krajów. Wykorzystywanie broni biologicznej z uwagi na niskie koszty jej produkcji, łatwość przenoszenia i duży zasięg może być jednak atrakcyjne dla potencjalnych terrorystów czy grup ekstremistycznych. Autor dokonuje analizy współczesnych zagrożeń i problemów wynikających z groźby użycia czynników biologicznych przez niepowołane osoby, przybliżając rys historyczny tego rodzaju broni, system reagowania na związane z nią zagrożenia, regulacje prawne obowiązujące w Polsce i na świecie oraz wybrane przypadki ataków. Pozwala to na wyciągnięcie wniosku o konieczności nieustannego doskonalenia obostrzeń prawnych dotyczących czynników biologicznych oraz przygotowywania struktur zarówno militarnych, jak i cywilnych na ewentualny atak i związane z nim działania kryzysowe i militarne.
    The aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of bioterrorism and related threats in a global and national (Polish) perspective. Experiences with using biological weapons, international conventions and disarmament processes induced the prohibition of this kind of weapons in majority of countries. However, low production costs, facility of transfer and large range of biological weapons may be appealing to potential terrorists and extremist groups. The author analyses contemporary threats and problems connected with possibility of using biological weapons by unauthorized persons. He discusses the historical overview of biological agents, the response system for the threats they cause, Polish and global legal regulations, as well as selected cases of attacks. It leads to the conclusion that continuous improvement of laws concerning biological agents is needed, as well as the preparation of military and civil structures for a potential attack and related crisis and military operations.

Celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie różnych aspektów różnorodności biologicznej Polski. Stanowi to podstawę do dalszych rozważań na temat antropogenicznych zagrożeń oraz podstaw prawnych jej ochrony.
    Poland is characterized by outstanding landscapes and relatively greater biodiversity than other European countries. In contrast to the rest of Europe, natural landscapes or close to them, of great natural and aesthetic value survived not only in the high mountains, but in the lowlands as well, especially in the eastern and northern part of the Poland. In addition they are in relatively good state. The purpose of this article is to characterize the different aspects of biodiversity in Poland. This is the basis for further reflection on the anthropogenic threats and legal aspects of its protection.

    Zagrożenia biologiczne należą do tej kategorii zagrożeń, które mogą wywołać negatywne skutki dla zdrowia i życia ludzi, zwierząt czy roślin i to na masową skalę. Doświadczamy tego chociażby w trwających obecnie na świecie pandemiach AIDS czy COVID-19. Wiedza na temat powyżej kategorii zagrożeń ma charakter interdyscyplinarny i rozproszony. Brak jest obecnie, przynajmniej w Polsce, opracowań naukowych, w których w sposób kompleksowy zdefiniowanoby ich istotę, dokonano ich klasyfikacji i przedstawiono w sposób stanowiący podstawę do doskonalenia systemów bezpieczeństwa powszechnego. W niniejszym artykule ich autor podjął się próby zdefiniowania i sklasyfikowania powyższej kategorii zagrożeń w świetle literatury naukowej i przepisów prawa obowiązującego w Polsce. Przedstawił ponadto krótką charakterystykę poszczególnych zagrożeń biologicznych, których sprawcą jest sama przyroda, sygnalizując jednocześnie, że ich sprawcą mogą być ludzie, którzy poprzez działania celowe (działania militarne z użyciem broni biologicznej, działania bioterrorystyczne) lub niecelowe (awarie przemysłowe, wypadki) mogą przyczynić się do powstawania epidemii chorób, na które nie posiadamy stosownych leków czy szczepionek.
    Biological threats belong to this category of threats that can have negative effects on the health and life of humans, animals or plants, on a massive scale. We are experiencing this, for example, in the ongoing pandemics of AIDS and COVID-19 in the world. Knowledge about the above categories of threats is interdisciplinary and dispersed. Currently, at least in Poland, there are no scientific studies that would comprehensively define their essence, classify them and present them in a way that would constitute the basis for the improvement of public security systems. In this article, the author attempts to define and classify the above category of threats in the light of scientific literature and laws which are in force in Poland. He also presents a short description of individual biological threats derived from nature itself, while signalling that their perpetrators may be people who, through deliberate actions (military actions with the use of biological weapons, bioterrorist actions) or unintentional actions (industrial failures, accidents), may contribute to the emergence of disease epidemics for which we do not have the appropriate medicines or vaccines.
