Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono porównanie wyników ługowania chemicznego i biologiczno-chemicznego rud antymonu i złota Sb-(Au) ze złoża Pezinok (Malé Karpaty Mts., Western Carpathians, Slowacja) przeprowadzonego w tych samych warunkach. Wyniki badań przedstawiają kolejność i postęp utleniania zaprezentowanych minerałów rudnych (lelingit, arsenopiryt, stybnit, antymon rodzimy, gudmunit, bertheryt, piryt, sfaleryt i chalkopiryt). Wykazano różnice między ługowaniem chemicznym i biologiczno-chemicznym szlifowanych powierzchni wybranych minerałów siarczkowych. Efekty ługowania biologiczno-chemicznego minerałów siarczkowych są znacząco wyższe od wyników ługowania chemicznego bez udziału bakterii.
The article presents the results of the leaching experiments, the comparison of the chemical and biological-chemical leaching experiments with ores from the Sb-(Au-) base metal deposit of Pezinok (Malé Karpaty Mts., Western Carpathians, Slovakia) under the same conditions in solutions. The research study shows the oxidation order and the progression of presented ore minerals (löllingite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, native Sb, gudmundite, berthierite, pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite). The differences between chemical and biological-chemical leaching activity of various ore minerals at the surface of polished sections have been discussed. The extent of the biological-chemical leaching of sulphide minerals is significantly higher than the chemical leaching of sulphide minerals without bacteria.

Opis:
Two theories, one based on the metabolism of inorganic substances, the other on metabolism of organic substances, have played an important role in the explanation of the origin of life. They demonstrate that the original environment of life on Earth was seawater containing micronutrients with structural, metabolic and catalytic activity. It is assumed that the first primitive organisms lived around 3.8 billion years ago and it was also then that the first catalytic reaction involving metal ions occurred. Biological oxidation leading to oxidative stress and cell damage in animals represents one of these types of reactions which are responsible for many animal diseases. The role of prooxidative and antioxidative actions of transition metal ions as well as their neuropathological consequences have therefore been the topic for many research projects. There is hope that metal chelates and antioxidants might prove to be a modern mode of therapy for i.e. neurogenerative diseases. The aim of this review is to show the evolution of scientific knowledge on metal ions, their biological oxidation, and an overview of their role in physiology and in pathological processes.

Opis:
The advanced oxidation process with Fenton’s reagent can be used in industrial wastewater treatment, especially for the degradation of not easily biodegradable contaminations. Chemical oxidation of industrial wastewater or other substances as a pre-treatment before biological purification is the most effective method of wastewater treatment. However the Fenton process requires low pH of wastewater and final neutralization with a big amount of iron-containing precipitate. Thes paper presents laboratory experiments dealing with the treatment of adhesive wastewater in an sequencing batch reactor following the Fenton process without final neutralization.

Opis:
Organic compounds are the most diverse group of contaminants. The largest anthropogenic source of these contaminants in water is municipal and industrial wastewater. One of the indicators of surface water pollution is biological oxygen demand (BOD). Purifying water from organic micropollutants is a serious challenge and requires the development of newer and more effective methods. The removal of such contaminants is most effective only in advanced oxidation processes (AOP), which include UV photolysis and photocatalysis. The presented results are from preliminary research to evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment by ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and photocatalysis. Treatment efficiency was evaluated on the basis of changes in the BOD index before and after the advanced oxidation process of raw water. The values of the BOD5 index determined in accordance with PN-EN 25813:1997. The exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 60 minutes. The tested material was water samples taken from the Rudawa River, which is one of the drinking water sources for Krakow. The initial BOD5 value (expressed as concentration of O2) for all samples was about 8 mg/L but it has decreased to over 2 mg/L due to AOP processes. This means that after an hour, more than 75% of organic compounds present in the raw water were removed. For photocatalysis (TiO2-MMT), the exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 35 minutes. Water samples taken from the Rudawa River were also used as test material. The initial BOD5 value for all samples was about 9 mg/L but it has decreased to about 4 mg/L due to the photocatalysis process. This means that after 35 minutes, 55% of the organic compounds present in the raw water were removed.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to determine the antioxidant activity and influence of Allium ursinum L. leaf extract on physicochemical and electrical properties of erythrocytes in order to help clarify its capacity to alleviate oxidative stress. The phenolic compounds were isolated from the leaves of bear garlic. The composition of the extract is well documented and was earlier analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by UPLC methods. The impact of the extract constituents on the erythrocyte membrane properties was determined on the basis of its osmotic fragility, fluidity, organization of the hydrophilic area and transmembrane potential with spectrophotometric and fluorimetric methods. Furthermore, the effect of the extract on the level of membrane lipid oxidation and also on the extent of hemolysis of erythrocytes subjected to oxidation induced by AAPH compound was determined. The study showed that the extract at 40 µg/mL lowers the level of erythrocyte hemolysis caused by 76.8% oxidation. In addition, the extract protects lipid membranes against hemolysis better than ascorbic acid. The extract, in examined range of concentrations, did not induce hemolysis of erythrocytes, caused small decrease in their electric potential and osmotic fragility, and increased disorder of the polar heads of membrane lipids. The high antioxidant efficiency and determined effects of the interaction of bear garlic leaf extract with the erythrocyte membrane suggest that its constituents may not only protect cells against free radicals but also mitigate the effects of oxidative stress.

Opis:
Dye wastewater is one of typically non-biodegradable industrial effluents. A new process linking Fenton’s oxidation with biological oxidation proposed in this study was investigated to degrade the organic substances from real dye wastewater. During the combination process, the Fenton’s oxidation process can reduce the organic load and enhance biodegradability of dye wastewater, which is followed by biological aerated filter (BAF) system to further remove organic substances in terms of discharge requirement. The results showed that 97.6% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by the combination process was achieved at the optimum process parameters: pH of 3.5, H22
