Opis:
The potential use of commercial enzyme and pH control has been investigated for enhancing dairy manure fermentation and modeling dissolved organic matter and orthophosphate (PO4-P) dynamics of fermenters. Anaerobic lab-scale batch fermenters (initial total solids concentration (TSo) = 3.8 wt. %) were fed with separated dairy manure solids and operated under pH controls (5 and 9.5). The enzyme-supplemented alkaline fermenters clearly outperformed the acidic fermenters in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilization: ca. 50% vs. 20%, respectively. Soluble PO4-P in the acidic fermenters was comparably higher but constituted less than 20% of total phosphorus. Better soluble COD (>80%) and soluble PO4-P (>70%) yields were noted for the dilute fermenters (TSo = 0.6–0.8 wt. %). An existing model was retrofitted, calibrated and validated for simulating dynamics of soluble COD, volatile fatty acids, and soluble orthophosphate under various pH and enzyme conditions.

Żelazny Most tailings pond
Opis:
The study was carried out on the Cu and Zn content of plant material (wheat grain, hay and potato tubers) and animal food products (cow’s milk, hen’s eggs and chicken meat) collected in the vicinity of the Żelazny Most waste treatment tailings pond (Lower Silesia, Poland). The samples for the study accomplished in 2016-2018 were collected from the places located in the nearest vicinity of the tailings pond (6 farms within a distance shorter than 4 km – zone I) and those located further away (6 farms within a distance from 4 to 10 km from the tailings pond – zone II). Copper and Zn concentrations were measured on a Varian Spectra AA220 Fast Sequential atomic absorption spectrophotmeter. The mean values of Cu noted in wheat grain harvested in the years under investigation ranged from 3.87 to 5.27 mg kg-1 DM, while the maximum value was 6.97 mg kg-1 DM. The highest accumulation of Cu and Zn was in hay (max. 10.10 and 99.04 mg kg-1 DM, respectively), while the lowest values were noted in milk and eggs. The zinc content of cow’s milk was found within the range from 2.64 to 4.01 mg kg-1 FM and the highest amount was 6.32 mg kg-1 FM. It was also found the mean Cu concentrations in poultry meat varied from 0.53 to 1.55 mg kg-1 FM and the maximum value was 3.50 mg kg-1 FM. No significant differences between zones I and II were observed (p≤0.05). The current results are comparable with those obtained in 2007 and 2013. With only a few exceptions, the biomonitoring studies did not show that the levels of the two metals in the biological material tested exceeded data reported in the Polish and international literature. Nowadays, there is no reason to consider the Żelazny Most tailings pond to be an toxicological threat to the natural and agricultural environment regarding Cu and Zn, but its periodic biomonitoring is necessary due to the chemical properties of these two elements and their potential effect on some environmental factors.

Opis:
The object of this study was to examine the nature of natural organic matter (NOM) removed on each stage of water treatment train used in the “Mokry Dwór” Wrocław Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and to compare obtained results with water treatment efficiencies achieved with the use of membrane ultrafiltration, ion-exchange and UF/ion-exchange integrated processes. In the experiments fractional analysis with the use of polymeric resins (DAX-8, XAD-4 and IRA-958) was used. Obtained results have shown that most (56%) of the raw water NOM was found in fraction characterized by presence of humic and fulvic acids (VHA and SHA fractions). VHA fraction made the most of DOC removed in examined water treatment train and coagulation was mainly responsible for this effect. Integrated process consisting of MIEX®DOC ion exchange and PES 10 kDa ultrafiltration turned out to be very effective at high molecular weight hydrophobic compounds removal from water being much less efficient with hydrophilic compounds.

Opis:
Suitability of conventional batch electrodialysis to fluoride removal from aqueous solutions has been investigated. The experiments were conducted with the use of laboratory installation PCCell BED-1 System at a constant current density (1.56 or 2.34 mA/cm2). The influence of initial fluoride and salt (NaCl) concentration, as well as the presence of organic matter on the process performance was studied. It was found that the separation efficiency increased upon decrease of initial fluoride content in model solutions. Permissible final concentration of fluorides in the product water (1.5 mg/dm3) was obtained for experiments with solutions of initial fluoride concentration equal to 5 mg F–/dm3 and 10 mg F–/dm3. The presence of humic acids in fluoride solutions subjected to electrodialysis treatment has no adverse effect on the defluorization and desalination efficiency. The calculated electrical energy demand depended on composition of fluoride solution and varied from 0.121 to 0.895 kWh/m3.

X-ray fluorescence analysis
Opis:
The utilization of X-ray fluorescence technique for the determination of trace element concentrations in environmental and biological samples is presented. The analytical methods used include energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence with polarizing secondary targets, total reflection X-ray fluorescence, direct in-situ X-ray fluorescence, and micro-beam X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. These methods were applied to analysis of different samples including soil, water, plant material and airborne particulate matter collected on polycarbonate filters. The performance and achieved detection limits of elements for different techniques, established by measuring appropriate reference standards, are presented. Also described is the utilization of micro-beam X-ray fluorescence technique for studying element distribution in heterogeneous samples and investigating the 2D- and 3D-morphology of minute samples by means of computerized X-ray absorption and X-ray fluorescence tomography. The different X-ray techniques have their unique advantages. The micro-beam X-ray fluorescence set-up has an advantage of producing very well collimated primary X-ray beam (about 15 mm in diameter), in front of which the analyzed sample can be precisely positioned, providing local information about the sample composition. The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence with secondary targets offers rapid analysis of broad range of elements (Na–U) combined with a simple sample preparation method. Total reflection X-ray fluorescence technique, characterized by the lowest detection limits of elements, has its leading edge in analysis of liquid samples, and dealing with particle size effects in air particulates collected on filter papers. In-situ X-ray fluorescence spectrometers are truly portable and enable on the spot, in field analysis. It is shown that the combination of several XRF methods

Opis:
Decomposition kinetics of natural organic substances during the photocatalytic process with a semi-conductor TiO2 has been investigated. In the study, a laboratory reactor Heraeus and in a photocatalytic membrane reactor were used. Simulated solutions of deionized water, surface water and fulvic acids, differing in composition, were tested in the experiment. In order to determine reaction rate constants, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model based on the first order reaction was applied. It was found that photocatalytic process enabled effective degradation of natural organic substances although its run was affected by inorganic ions, mainly those producing water hardness, present in water.
