Opis:
The Chandipore beach, situated in Balasore district, Odisha, 21°28΄N 87°01΄E / 21.47°N and 87.02°E shows an interesting nature of wave action as the water recedes up to an average of 5 kilometres during the ebb and tide, resulting in a vast, dynamic array of coastal biodiversity. It gets exposed to a huge tourism load every year and is faced with multidimensional anthropogenic interactions manifested through a varying gradient of urbanizing parameters like cattle grazing, automobile exhaust, constructions in vicinity of beach area, sewage and solid disposals etc. Present piece of work aims at documenting the premonsoon abundance and diversity of marine invertebrate fauna in this eastern Indian sea beach. Adamsia palliata, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, Diogenes rectimanus, Sabella sp., Astropecten mauritianas were found to be few of the prominent faunal representatives. Significant differences in respect of species richness have been observed among different selected ecozones through the coastal landscape based on tidal activity and anthropogenic exposure (F5.73, p ≤ 0.05). Such type of field-based observations leads to the scope of further estimation of the ecological status of these native organisms, their intra and inter-specific associations and functional contributions to coastal landscape playing role as a potential bioindicator, which may in turn become instrumental in frame working the future conservation scheme of these natural assets.

The trees of parks and gardens support many species, the survival of urban-dwelling species mainly bird species. Birds amongst other species provide a wide range of environmental and social functions to cities and urban dwellers. The present study aims to know bird diversity in two parks as bioindicator of automobile air pollution exposure, landscape changes and/or human interactions. The study areas were selected as per heavily-populated neighborhoods, nearby office buildings, nearby roads and continuous vehicular movements, human interactions as visitors, where high levels of human disturbance are common. The study was carried out at 2 sampling stations viz (i) Elliot park and (ii) Agri-horticulture Society. The bird species diversity was studied by qualitative and quantitative assessment. Indices were Species richness, Index of Dominance, Relative abundance, Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index and Evenness Index for birds for all selected sites were calculated using the statistical formulae. The present results as bioindicators bird species clearly indicate that the bird species are very few in numbers in both the parks. When comparison made between both the parks, it was observed less number of bird varieties (16 types) in Elliot park than varieties (9 types) more less in number in Agri-horticulture society. This study is a preliminary assessment of bird diversity but further researches are needed in relation to biochemical and genetic damage study as well as air pollution load by using instruments. In the present study it was concluded that the less numbers of birds and their different diversity indices were found a decreasing trends, though there no attempt has been made on physico-chemical properties of present air pollutants. The less number of varieties of bird species are as tolerant bioindicators, which may be due to the vehicular pollution and/or human interference and/or landscape changes due to nearby neighborhood blocks, office and residential buildings, continuous movement of vehicles etc.

Opis:
The aim of biomonitoring study was to detect morphological deformities in leaf and pollen micro-morphology of Cassia sophera Linn. after exposure to vehicular air pollution. The study areas were selected based on three different roadsides such as control area designated as “C” at Serampore college campus as low vehicular movement area, Bi-lane roadside away 1.5 Km from Durgapur expressway as moderate vehicular movement designated as “M” and roadside near Durgapur Expressway designated as “H” because of continuous vehicular movements. Present studies attempted on Cassia sophera exposed to different levels of roadside air pollution were used to detect varying degrees of damage produced in its morphological characters with special reference to leaf shape and visible injuries as well as micro-morphological features of pollens at wet and dry conditions. In results, the damages were observed noticeable with chlorotic spots, necrosis, etc. It was not only showed morphological damage in leaf but also huge differences in the production of viable pollens with plants exposed to high levels of air pollution showed pollen production with no material content inside as well as with significantly (P<0.001 and P<0.01) reduced sizes compared to the plants exposed to low levels of air pollution. It is concluded that varying degrees of air pollution produces a huge impact at sub cellular, cellular and tissue levels. This biomonitoring study helps to know the alarming condition of roadside air pollution. Moreover, it can not be identified the effect of an individual or combination of air pollutant(s) such as particulates or CO or CO2 or SO2 or NOx or PAN or O3, etc. It is suggesting to further study with instruments to detect the load of air pollutants with special reference to particulates and gaseous pollutants.

Opis:
Air pollution is a matter of great concern in the globe. Generally air pollutant generates from industries, automobiles, etc. and the primary pollutants may easily convert to secondary pollutants. Both of these pose serious threat to the plant community viz. crops, vegetables and avenue plant species are depending on the emission pattern, atmospheric transport and leaf uptake and on the plant’s biochemical defense capacity. An impact caused by air pollutants depends not only upon its concentration, but also on the duration (acute and chronic exposure) and combination of air pollutants. Biomonitoring on plant species is an easy tool to know bioindicator species in which exposure of air pollutants can easily be identified. The present review deals with past and present research works of major gaseous pollutants emissions and their impact on crop, vegetables and tree species performance from available literatures.

This study focused on verifying the fluctuating asymmetry hypothesis in the crustacean Talitrus saltator, which lives in sandy beaches. We analysed three populations, one from an unpolluted Tuscan beach relatively free of tourism, and two from Sicilian beaches, which have been increasingly used for tourism and have been exposed to hydrocarbon/pesticide pollution. Results confirmed the sexual dimorphism in the second antennae flagella, which in the Tuscan population presented directional asymmetry. This population had a significant level of fluctuating asymmetry in the P6 and P3 meri. The results showed the importance of the developmental stage during which environmental mechanical stresses act.

Opis:
Identification of differentially expressed genes that could be potentially used as biomarkers of PAH exposure of common invertebrate animal (like freshwater snail) would be a valuable resource for investigators interested in toxicology and biomonitoring of aquatic environments. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate effects of waterborne benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) exposure on mRNA expression in the pond snail’s (Lymnaea stagnalis) hepatopancreatic gland. Toward this end, mature individuals of pond snail (L. stagnalis) were treated with 50µM B[a]P solution in a short 36h static exposure test. Differential Display PCR (DD-PCR) was used to generate a unique cDNA fingerprint of genes that were differentially expressed in the tissues of exposed and unexposed snails. To assess the putative identity of the isolated cDNA amplicons (ESTs), BLAST queries were performed to find similarities in their nucleotide sequence. Real-Time qPCR analysis was used to verify the DD-PCR expression profile. Finally, an additional independent exposure study, including higher dose of B[a]P (100µM), was conducted to validate the expression of selected ESTs. BLAST revealed that only 3 out of 9 isolated ESTs had meaningful information on their putative nucleotide sequence identity. The highest similarity was scored for EST-A1, identified as the transcript of UAP-like protein, found to be up-regulated after B[a]P exposure. The original expression pattern that was observed in DD-PCR step was coherent with results of the qPCR verification for 3 out of 5 analyzed ESTs. However, changes in the ESTs expression were modest and the treatment with B[a]P resulted in significant down-regulation for only 1 unidentified fragment (EST-G42, almost 2-fold; p<0.05) when compared to untreated snails. Although no significant changes were observed for EST-A1 and EST-G42 in the validation study, their expression pattern was consistent with that obtained from DD-PCR. Surprisingly, EST-C5 remained in contrast to the DD-PCR part, but it showed significant down-regulation in group of snails exposed to 100µM B[a]P (3.5-fold; p<0.05). The obtained results show that diverse genes may be involved in the molecular response of the pond snail’s hepatopancreas to treatment with B[a]P. However, further research is needed to confirm the utility of the discovered EST as PAH biomarkers in biomonitoring practices with L. stagnalis as bioindicator species.

Opis:
Monothalamous foraminifera with organic and agglutinated test walls (‘‘allogromiids’’ sensu lato) deserve attention because of their importance in deep-sea and shallow-water soft-bottom communities and their crucial phylogenetic position at the base of the foraminiferal evolutionary tree. However, our knowledge of the biodiversity and ecology of monothalamous foraminifera is very incomplete and geographically patchy. Here, we present a short review based on the available data on monothalamous, soft-walled foraminiferal taxa from the Adriatic Sea in response to several environmental parameters (i.e., organic matter, oxygen, grain size, depth). The main results of the studies provide evidence of the importance of these foraminiferal taxa in this shallow, temperate latitude area;they represent a start for the identification of soft-shelled monothalamous morphotypes that could be potential bioindicators of environments influenced by inputs of fresh waters, increasing eutrophication and consequent fluctuations in bottom-water oxygenation. The contribution of this soft-shelled component to living benthic foraminiferal assemblages appears not negligible and excluding it from foraminiferal studies can potentially lead to a loss of ecological information. The study, therefore, provide an atlas of the Adriatic soft-shelled foraminiferal taxa in order to 1) encourage the species-level description, if possible, or alternatively a basic morphotype characterization, 2) facilitate future comparisons of taxa from similar settings, 3) promote their potential use in future biomonitoring investigations together with the hard-shelled foraminifera.

Threats associated with the production, storage and use of warfare agents containing high explosives against the backdrop of political and social events emerging in the 21st century present new challenges for specialized laboratories involved in detecting contamination and identifying its source. A common analytical problem in studies conducted in the ecosystem is the low concentration of the test substance - below the detection limit of the instrument. Helpful in solving this dilemma are accumulation bio-markers, which appear to be an excellent tool for detecting contamination in, for example, flowing water. Such biomarkers make it possible to determine the presence of specific chemical agents at the same time they are a sensitive indicator of the ecosystem's response to contamination. The presented chromatographic method allows quantitative and qualitative determination of 2,6-diamino-4-nitrotoluene, 2,4-diamino-6- nitrotoluene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, trinitrotoluene, 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene, 4-amino-2,6- dinitrotoluene and tetryl in the biological matrix. The effects of accumulation in the tissue of crustaceans on TNT test solutions were studied from 1 to 24 hours. The saturation effect was observed and the concentration of TNT derivatives was measured. The observed effects confirmed the usefulness of the selected larva as a bio-indicator of TNT contaminant accumulation in the ecosystem.

Opis:
Foraminiferal assemblages from the neritic environment reveal the palaeoecological impact of nutrient types in relation to shore distance and sedimentary setting. Comparatively proximal siliciclastic settings from the Boreal Domain (Brora section, Eastern Scotland) were dominated by inner−shelf primary production in the water column or in sea bottom, while in relatively seawards mixed carbonate−siliciclastic settings from the Western Tethys (Prebetic, Southern Spain), nutrients mainly derived from the inner−shelf source. In both settings, benthic foraminiferal assemblages increased in diversity and proportion of epifauna from eutrophic to oligotrophic conditions. The proximal setting example (Brora Brick Clay Mb.) corresponds to Callovian offshore shelf deposits with a high primary productivity, bottom accumulation of organic matter, and a reduced sedimentation rate for siliciclastics. Eutrophic conditions favoured some infaunal foraminifera. Lately, inner shelf to shoreface transition areas (Fascally Siltstone Mb.), show higher sedimentation rates and turbidity, reducing euphotic−zone range depths and primary production, and then deposits with a lower organic matter content (high−mesotrophic conditions). This determined less agglutinated infaunal foraminifera content and increasing calcitic and aragonitic epifauna, and calcitic opportunists (i.e., Lenticulina). The comparatively distal setting of the Oxfordian example (Prebetic) corresponds to: (i) outer−shelf areas with lower nutrient input (relative oligotrophy) and organic matter accumulation on comparatively firmer substrates (lumpy lithofacies group) showing dominance of calcitic epifaunal foraminifera, and (ii) mid−shelf areas with a higher sedimentation rate and nutrient influx (low−mesotrophic conditions) favouring potentially deep infaunal foraminifers in comparatively unconsolidated and nutrient−rich substrates controlled by instable redox boundary (marl−limestone rhythmite lithofacies).

Air pollution arises mainly from automobiles and industries is well known fact. Monitoring and detection by instrument cannot be possible everywhere however, indication from plant species by their alterations in leaf morphology and anatomy may be a suitable easy screening measurement. The present study aims to detect morphological features with special reference to gall quantification and anatomy of leaves of Alstonia scholaris R. Br., found in eastern Indian urban and suburban area that are exposed to vehicular emission. The results indicated alterations of leaf morphology along with length (L), breadth (B), L/B ratio and significantly increased (P < 0.001, 0.01 and 0.05) Air Pollution Index (API). It is concluded that vehicular emission can be monitored as an early indication through increased API in A. scholaris. Further research would be needed in relation to secondary metabolites alteration, biochemical and genetic parameters to know pollutant susceptibility as an indicator. In addition, anatomical abnormalities in gall formation as well as numbers were also pronounced in leaves exposed to various load of air pollution.

Wyniki badań potwierdziły przydatność Lemna minor L. jako biomonitora do wykrywania punktowych źródeł zanieczyszczenia ekosystemów wodnych m.in. ołowiem i niklem.
A preliminary study was conducted in 2016 to assess the possibility of using common duckweed (Lemna minor L.) in passive biomonitoring of surface waters. The duckweed was collected from reservoirs and watercourses located in Grodkow, Lewin Brzeski, Niemodlin and Opole (Opole Province). Heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in mineralized biota samples were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Differences in heavy metals concentrations were observed in samples of Lemna minor L. collected from reservoirs located at different distances from contamination sources, such as communication routes (A4 motorway, national road 94) and industrial plants. The results of the study confirmed the usefulness of Lemna minor L. as a biomonitor of point sources of aquatic ecosystems contamination with, i.a. lead and nickel.

One year qualitative and quantitative study of communities of three major taxonomic groups has been carried out at test panles placed in the upper infarlittoral zone of coastal area of Vela Luka Bay, Croatia. A list of 44 taxa was recorded. Chaetomorpha sp., Ulva sp., Fosliella farinosa, Sphacelaria cirrosa, Polysiphonia scopulorum were the most frequent dominant taxa. Among 27 algal taxa with noticeable presence only three were classified as ESG (Ecological State Groups) I. Low diversity and species richness together with massive presence of the green algae (as Ulva sp.) and negligible presence of ESG I taxa, may lead to erroneous conclusion that Vela Luka Bay is eutrophicated area. Low values of biomass and R/P (Rhodophyceae by Phaeophyceae ratio) Index together with dominance of Phaeophyta also support conclusion that there is no negative impact of nutrient enrichment on macrophyta fouling community in Vela Luka Bay.

The results of the research on the Cijulang River found 27 species of 5 classes included in 3 fillum namely Mollusca (23 species), Arthropoda (3 species) and Annelida (1 species). The value of macrozoobenthos density in the Cijulang River ranges from 29.7 - 416.3 ind/m2. Diversity index ranges from 1.48 - 2.24. The uniformity index ranges from 0.49 - 0.80. The range of water quality and substrate showed variations and dynamics that were still within the tolerance limits of macrozoobenthos life and water salinity is the main causes of variations in the macrozoobenthos community structure on the Cijulang River.

Opis:
This study aims to prove the type and abundance of macrozoobenthos are affected by the physico-chemical condition of the habitat so that it can be used as a bioindicator in assessing river water quality with a case study in the Upstream of Citarum River. The method used in this study consists of two stages, namely determining the status of river quality with pollution index and determining the components to see the relationship of the water quality parameters to the abundance of macrozoobenthos with principal component analysis. On the basis of these studies, the results were that at the location of the study status of the river quality is slightly polluted and mildly polluted. For the slightly polluted status Corbicula sp. was used as the dominant macrozoobenthos parameter with the parameters of dissolved oxygen, organic carbon and N-O in the clay-dominated sediments. In turn, for the river areas with mild pollution, Enallagma sp., Tubifex sp., and Chironomous sp. were used as bioindicators and they have a relationship with the parameters of nitrate, TSS, and P-total.
