The aim of this study was to compare colonization of pine chips without supplements and pine chips supplemented with forest litter, peat and lignite by mites (Acari), and particularly oribatid mites (Oribatida) in a two-year cycle. The study was conducted in the years 2013-2014, on microplots established in a belt of trees in a nursery in Białe Błota within Bydgoszcz Forest District. The experiment was established on four microplots (1 x 1 m). It included the following variants: C - pine chips alone, Lf – pine chips inoculated with fresh forest litter, Lf+Pe – pine chips enriched with deacidified high peat (20%) (pH 5.5-6.5) and inoculated with the litter, Lf+Li - pine chips enriched with granulated lignite (20%) inoculated with the litter. In the first year of the study, mite abundance in the chips inoculated with forest litter was significantly higher than that on microplot C. In the second year of the experiment, the abundance of these microarthropods decreased probably due to unfavorable weather conditions. The most common group of mites were usually oribatid mites that accounted for 19.7 to 80.4% of all mites. An analysis of seasonal dynamics of Oribatida abundance over the entire study cycle revealed a clear increase in their numbers in non-supplemented pine chips only on the last sampling date. Oribatida abundance in Lf variant was similar at the beginning and end of the study. Contrary to that, their number decreased in the chips supplemented with peat, and particularly those enriched with lignite. In total, 36 species of oribatid mites were identified on all microplots. The greatest boost in species diversity after the introduction of forest litter was observed in Lf chips and the smallest in Lf + Li variant. Oribatula tibialis was the most common oribatid mite in the investigated substrates. Low numbers of Oppiella nova and Tectocepheus velatus, the species having trophic associations with fungi, may indicate poor colonization of the chips, particularly those enriched with lignite, by saprotrophic organisms.

The article deals with the main methods of nutrient removal from wastewater, as well as presents promising technologies and techniques. Struvite was characterized by a complex phosphorus fertilizer. The influence of struvite on the processes of germination of cultivated plants was investigated. The possibility of creating a growth substrate as an inexpensive and effective alternative to the disposal of the man-made wastes that contain an organic component was identified. The composition of the growth substrate was selected to ensure its functional properties. The growth substrate was tested by bioindication. Subsequently, the modification of the substrate by adding natural sorbents.

Ekotoksykologia jest nauką względnie młodą, która stanowi połączenie ekologii i toksykologii, pozwalające na badanie wpływu substancji toksycznych na ekosystemy. Bioindykacja jest metodą, w której wykorzystuje się jako wskaźnik organizmy żywe. Ich reakcja może być podstawą do oceny ogólnej aktywności biologicznej badanego układu, a co za tym idzie, do oceny toksyczności badanej próbki. Za pomocą bioindykacji można wyznaczyć ogólną toksyczność badanej próbki oraz określić sumaryczny efekt oddziaływania zanieczyszczeń zawartych w ściekach na środowisko wodne. Istnieje wiele testów, w których jest wykorzystywana metoda bioindykacji. W Głównym Instytucie Górnictwa badania prowadzono z zastosowaniem LUMIStox. System ten pozwala na uzyskanie powtarzalnych i miarodajnych wyników pomiarów.
Ecotoxicology is relatively young science, which forms link between ecology and toxicology enabling investigation of toxic substances’ impact on ecosystems. Bioindication is a method in which living organisms are used as indicator. Their reaction can be a basis for assessment of general biological activity of studied system, and, as a consequence, for assessment of studied sample toxicity. With the help of bioindication, the general toxicity of studied sample may be determined, as well as the total effect of contaminations contained in sewages impact on water environment may be defined. Many tests exist, in which the bioindication method is used. In Central Mining Institute, the tests with the use of LUMIStox were conducted. This system enables to obtain repeatable and reliable results of measurements.

Testate amoebae (TA) are unicellular protozoans enclosed in a test capable of indicating a wide variety of environmental conditions. Among others, characteristics such as short life cycle, great sensitivity and worldwide distribution makes them adequate bioindicators. As a complement to physical and chemical measurements, biomonitoring can be a cheaper and fastest way of environmental monitoring. This research sought to evaluate the extent of TA use in biomonitoring and the responses given by them to environmental features. The research was conducted in Scielo, Science Direct, Online Library, Google Scholar and Capes Journal Portal and yielded 211 papers. TA bioindication is able to provide information on metal, trace element and atmospheric pollution, and to point out different trophic states, pH, and evidence on characteristics of hydrology. Further, TA can be used in paleoenvironmental reconstruction as they reflect climate, volcanic and even sea level change phenomena. Sometimes, together with other organisms in environmental analysis, they have shown to be an important complement to biomonitoring. Additionally, a functional traits approach has been recently included as a promising tool. Methodological adjustments that have been conducted throughout the years are allowing TA use to be more reliable and precise. This review provides insight on the many possible functions of TA in bioindication studies, highlighting their wide use as bioindicators.

The surface water quality assessment could be based on a combined physical and chemical analysis, but it could also be determined with bioindication methods. Classical physicochemical analysis is in most cases more expensive and time-consuming than the bioindication methods. This type of analysis also requires expensive equipment and shows the situation in the water only at the moment of sampling. Although the bioindication methods are often complicated, they allow a relatively inexpensive estimation of the water quality. Moreover, during their implementation, the substances harmful to the environment are not generated, and the obtained results usually reflect the total interaction of all factors and substances to the analyzed living organisms. Indicator organisms or their communities applied to the research, with identified ranges of tolerance to selected factors, could help to determine the physical and chemical parameters of water. This paper presents a bioindication study with an effect of stormwater system on the receiver – the Bystrzyca river, in Lublin, Poland. The level of saprophyty of the river sector was calculated based on the selected species of algae (diatoms and green algae) and the influence of the stormwater discharge on the communities of these organisms was determined.

The article reveals the outcomes of the research studies related to air polluted with heavy metals in Swietokrzyski National Park. The thalli of Hypogymnia physodes L. were used as the bioindicator in order to conduct the research. The samples of monk’s-hood lichen were transplanted from the unpolluted area of north-eastern Poland to the area of Swietokrzyski National Park. The research studies were carried out in the warmer half of 2019. The received outcomes indicated the spatial variability of concentrations in the range of analysed metal deposition patterns in the lichen thalli. The average content of the analysed elements tended to be the highest in the case of iron (1,111 mg × kg–1 d.m.), zinc (87.7 mg × kg–1 d.m.) and strontium (27.7 mg × kg–1 d.m.). The research revealed that the important role in determining the content of heavy metals in the lichen thalli was played by the communication. The highest values were recorded at the sites located in the immediate neighbourhood of the voivodeship roads. It was verified that the content of metals was also influenced by the so-called low emission from the household and welfare sector as well as remote immission.

Monitoring of water ecosystems in Kazakhstan is based generally on chemical indicators. Biological indicators, such as macroinvertebrates and a phytoplankton are rarely used. Sometimes some macrophyte species of are used for the assessment of water quality. The aim of the study was to analyse the possibilities of the introduction of the Polish monitoring system based on aquatic plants for rivers in Kazakhstan watercourses. The Polish method uses the Macrophyte Index for Rivers (MIR) and it has been prepared for the purposes of the EU Water Framework Directive. The systematic structure of Kazakhstan’s water plants were analyzed and compared with the macrophyte list of Poland. Flora of Kazakhstan was used as the main source of information and some recent publications were analyzed as well. It was found that the aquatic flora of Kazakhstan is rich and a total of 240 taxa of emergent and submerged plants are identified in the country. We have confirmed that a large number of aquatic plants recorded in Kazakhstan are recognized as bioindicators. The ecological tolerance and sensitivity of the identified bioindicators was analysed. A preliminary nine taxa with the the highest indicator weight in the MIR system (W = 3) were detected as the most sensitive indicators in Kazakhstan flora: Sciuro-hypnum plumosum, Scapania sp., Ceratphyllum demersum, C. submersum, Potamogeton lucens, P. praelongus, Lemna gibba, Menyanthes trifoliata and Acorus calamus. It was found that the MIR index can be applied in Kazakhstan, especially if we enrich the list of indicative species with the local macrophytes, which were not included in the original version. The list of potential indicator-species includes: Ranunculus altaicus, Ranunculus natans, Althenia filiformis, Nelumbo nucifera, Trapa incise which does not occur in Europe and Nuphar pumila, Nymphoides peltata, Ranunculus rionii, Rorippa palustris, Trapa natans, Utricularia intermedia, U. minor, Eleocharis acicularis and Vallisneria spiralis.

Celem prezentowanej pracy jest zidentyfikowanie obszarów rolniczych zagrożonych zanikaniem różnorodności gatunkowej na przykładzie zgrupowania dżdżownic traktowanego jako zastępczy indykator różnorodności gatunkowej organizmów glebowych. Przeanalizowano najważniejsze cechy charakteryzujące bieżące tendencje w zakresie przestrzennego zróżnicowania rolnictwa w Polsce, a także przeprowadzono szczegółowe badania z wykorzystaniem metody bioindykacyjnej. Wyniki tych dwóch analiz stanowiły podstawę do wskazania trzech typów obszarów o dużym prawdopodobieństwie nasilania się procesów upraszczania struktury krajobrazu, a więc i ryzyka utraty różnorodności biologicznej gleby.
The aim of this study is to identify the agricultural areas threatened by biodiversity decline on the example of earthworm assemblages treated as a surrogate indicator of soil organisms’ diversity. Authors carried out an analysis of characteristics of current trends in spatial structure of agriculture in Poland. Moreover, detailed study based on the bioindication method was conducted. The results of these two studies were the basis for identifying three types of areas with a high probability of intensification of the process of simplifying the landscape structure, and thus the risk of soil biodiversity loss.

Celem pracy było określenie przydatności wybranych organów Robinia pseudoacacia do bioindykacji. Oznaczono zawartości wybranych pierwiastków w liściach, pędach, nasionach i łupinach nasiennych R. pseudoacacia z terenów trzech miast województwa śląskiego: Katowic, Chorzowa i Siemianowic Śląskich. W każdym z miast wytypowano po pięć stanowisk pobrania próbek. Stanowiska podzielono na 3 grupy w zależności od ich otoczenia: różniły się one pod względem poziomu zanieczyszczenia (ruch uliczny, zakłady przemysłowe). Stwierdzono statystycznie istotne różnice w poziomie zanieczyszczeń pomiędzy wyróżnionymi grupami stanowisk. Na podstawie analizy skupień oraz PCA dla poszczególnych organów wyróżniono grupy stanowisk ze wzglądu na koncentrację badanych pierwiastków w tkankach R. pseudoacacia. Przeprowadzone badania pozwalają stwierdzić, że najlepiej nadającym się do celów bioindykacyjnych organem R. pseudoacacia są liście.
The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of chosen organs of Robinia pseudoacacia as bioindicators. Content of selected elements in leaves, shoots, seeds, pods and bark of R. pseudoacacia from the area of three cities of Silesia province: Katowice, Chorzow and Siemianowice Slaskie was estimated. In each of the cities five sampling points were selected. Localizations were grouped in three categories differing in terms of the level of pollution (traffic, industrial plants). Statistically significant differences between pollution level of segregated groups in investigated localizations were found. On the basis of PCA and cluster analysis for individual organs sampling points were divided into groups depending on concentration of investigated elements in tissues of R. pseudoacacia. Conducted studies suggest that the organ best suitable for bioindication are leaves of R. pseudoacacia.

The paper presents the results of research on the implementation of monitoring of the landfills influence on the atmospheric air using bioindication methods on the example of the Zhytomyr landfill (Ukraine)–one of the typical Ukrainian landfills, which is operated with minimal environmental protection measures. A comprehensive study of atmospheric air pollution in the landfill area was carried out using a human sensor system and an integral assessment using bioindication (lichens were chosen as bioindicators). The study revealed a reliable exponential dependence for modeling the relationship between the distance from the source of gas formation (solid waste landfill in the city of Zhytomyr) and the intensity of odor. The level of atmospheric air pollution was also determined based on the assessment of the projective coverage of the tree trunk with lichens. The research revealed an exponential dependence for modeling the relationship between the distance from the landfill boundary and the total coverage of the tree trunk with lichens. The results of the analysis confirmed the correctness of the use of the aforementioned method. The relationship between the results obtained by the lichen indication method and the strength of the odor from the landfill was evaluated. Based on the results of calculating the relative values of the assessment of atmospheric air pollution by the method of coverage of the tree trunk with lichens and the strength of the odor, a regression analysis was carried out and mathematical relationships were determined, that most accurately describe the change in these indicators with distance from the landfill boundary. It is proved that both tested methods can be used in Ukrainian realities to monitor the state of atmospheric air in the area of influence of municipal landfills, depending on the purpose of research. The analysis of the research results confirmed the significance of the results of the obtained assessment of the impact of the Zhytomyr solid waste landfill on the state of atmospheric air. The materials of these studies can find further application for the formation of databases of knowledge of landfills, which will allow to develop a strategy for managing them as an object of increased environmental hazard.

The study was conducted within the Bydgoszcz limits and in the vicinity of city Bydgoszcz at seven different habitats of Hierochloë repens presence: city district Fordon - (1), (2), (3) and (4); city district Kapuściska - (5), and Białe Błota near Bydgoszcz - (6) and (7). Samples for acarological analyses were collected from the plots covered with Hierochloë repens in spring (27 May) and autumn (28 October) 2014. The density of oribatid mites on the sites with Hierochloë repens was highly variable. High density of these microarthropods was characteristic of plots (2) with Convolvulo-Brometum inermis, (5) with Arrhenatheretum elatioris and (7) covered with grassy herbaceous plants growing on fertile soils. Particularly low density of oribatid mites was observed for plot (3) with Koelerio-Corynephoretea and Festuco-Brometea communities and the lowest content of carbon and nitrogen in the soil. Depending on the site and sample collection time, four to 22 species of oribatid mites were identified. Statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney U test) of mean number of species per sample s identified two groups of plots for both sample collection terms characterized by either low (1.00-3.10) or high values (3.30-7.40) of this parameter. The first group included plots (1), (3) and (6), and the second (2), (4), (5) and (7). The following species of oribatid mites dominated on the plots covered with Hierochloë repens: Tectocepheus velatus - (1), (2) and (6); Scheloribates laevigatus - (3), Oppiella nova - (4), Eupelops occultus - (5), Liebstadia similis - (7).

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki trzyletnich badań prowadzonych w ekosystemach łąkowych zlokalizowanych wokół kombinatu metalurgicznego w Dąbrowie Górniczej. Teren ten od wielu lat poddawany jest silnej antropopresji. Materiał do analiz pochodził z 15 stanowisk badawczych rozmieszczonych w różnych odległościach od emitora. W wybranych gatunkach roślin należących do trzech grup biologiczno-ekologicznych oznaczono zawartość siarki. Celem badań było przedstawienie stanu skażenia tym pierwiastkiem środowiska wokół emitora oraz ocena przydatności tych gatunków jako bioindykatorów. Zawartość siarki w badanych roślinach okazała się cechą gatunkową. Najwięcej tego pierwiastka zawierały Ranunculus acris oraz gatunki traw Holcus lanatus i Dactylis glomerata. Kolejną grupę stanowiły Medicago lupulina i Trifolium pratense. Najmniejsze stężenia stwierdzono u Rumex acetosa. U większości analizowanych gatunków badania nie wykazały żadnej istotnej korelacji pomiędzy zawartością siarki w roślinach i zawartością w glebie, odczynem gleby, odległością oraz kierunkiem usytuowania względem huty. Najbardziej obciążone tym pierwiastkiem były rośliny powierzchni leżących na kierunku północnowschodnim w odniesieniu do emitora.
In the article there are presented the results of the three-year long research which took place in meadow ecosystems located around the steelworks in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The area is highly influenced by human activity for many years. The material for the analysis came from 15 research stations, each put in different distance from the emitor. The content of the sulphur was definited in selected species of plants which were parts of three bioecological groups. The goal of the research was to show the level of sulphur pollution in the environment in the area around the emitor and to appraise the role of these plants as the bioindicators. The content of sulphur in plants turned out to be the species feature. The highest level of sulphur could be fund in Ranunculus acris and in grass species Holcus lanatus and Dactylis glomerata. The next group was formed by Medicago lupulina and Trifolium pretense. The least of sulphur could be found in Rumex acetosa. Mostly the research did not show the relationship between the content of sulphur in plants or in soil, soil re action and the distance from the steelworks. The highest sulphur content was in plants placed in north-east from the emitor.

A characteristic of wastewater from textile industry along with its impact on living organisms have been presented. The level and type of wastewater impact on the plants have been shown based on chemical analyses of plants and biotests performed at the test sites on the Piława River at Bielawa and Dzierżoniów and a comparative analysis.

There is a cascade of hydroelectric power plants built on the Váh River. From a water-management point of view, the natural channel is used to drain extreme discharges. During most of the year, discharges are regulated by water-management structures. These discharges are not used for energy-related purposes; therefore, it is important to determine the optimal discharge that will not negatively affect the ecosystem of the stream. The minimum balance discharge (hydro-ecological discharge) was determined based on the instream flow incremental methodology (IFIM) using the riverine habitat simulation system (RHABSIM). Input data were obtained from direct measurements on three reference reaches in the area between the cities Piešťany and Nové Mesto nad Váhom. Hydraulic flow characteristics were derived from three measurements at different water levels. Habitat quality was represented by ichthyofauna. Data to determine the habitat suit-ability curves of fish were obtained using a diving technique to collect video footage. The modelling resulted in the quantification of the effect of discharge on ichthyofauna as a bio-indicator of habitat quality, which implied the need of 20 m3∙s–1 for a minimum balance discharge in summer.

Heavy metals are some of the environmental pollutants that have a serious impact on the environment. The analysis of hydromacrophytes growing in small rivers of the south of Kazakhstan with different contents of heavy metal salts revealed that the morphometric indicators of the same plant species differ significantly, depending on the level of total mineralization of the aquatic environment in different rivers of the Turkestan region. It has been established that two plant species can be used to bioindicate the content of lead ions in the aquatic environment: Azolla caroliniana Willd. and Veronica beccabunga L., which must be introduced into the tested aqueous solutions in the amount of 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.5–2.0 kg/m3, respectively, to fully cover the water column at different depths. The first morphological changes in plants, in the form of destruction of the structure of chloroplasts along the edges of unfolded leaves in A. caroliniana Willd. and slight withering of the lower underwater leaves in V. beccabunga L., occur already at a 1.5 mg/l Pb2+ content in water, and a further increase in the content of lead ions in water to 600.0–800.0 mg/l leads to the death of plants.

The study was conducted in the Pomological Orchard of the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice on a plantation of blackcurrant cultivar ‘Tiben’. The following variants of the experiment were applied: control – NPK fertilization only, mulching with a peat substrate, shredded pine bark, sawdust of coniferous trees, bovine manure, plant compost, straw of cereals, and application of mycorrhizal inoculant MYKOFLOR. Mulching was performed each year in the spring in an amount of 25 dm3 per plot, and the inoculum was applied in an amount of 10 ml per shrub. Samples for acarological examinations were collected at 4 times, in the spring and autumn of successive seasons in 2012-2013. An increase in the overall density of mites, in comparison with the control surface, was observed after mulching the soil with sawdust of coniferous trees and plant compost. On all the plots, the communities of mites were dominated by mites of the order oribatid mites. For these mites, a statistically significant increase density was recorded after mulching the soil with sawdust of coniferous trees, bovine manure and plant compost. Mulching did not increase significantly the species diversity of oribatid mites. The soil of the blackcurrant plantation was found to be inhabited by relatively large numbers of two common oribatid mites species: Punctoribates punctum and Tectocepheus velatus. An increase in the population density of Punctoribates punctum was observed after mulching with peat, sawdust and compost.

One of the widespread sources of river pollution is the wastewater coming from both wastewater treatment plants and the stormwater system. Wastewater can vary significantly in composition and concentration of substances introduced into water bodies. Municipal effluents may contain significant amounts of organic matter and ammonia. Storm drains are diverse in composition and depend on the nature of the surface from which the water collects, but carry more suspended solids and less nutrients. The research was aimed at assessing the effect of surface runoff collected by the stormwater system from the territory of the city of Lublin on the Bystrica River using popular environmental indices, calculated on the basis of periphytonic algae species abundances: species number, Shannon’s H, rarefied species number, Pielou’s evenness, trophic diatom index (TDI). It was observed that the correspondence between a species diversity and the quality of the environment is not always straightforward. Therefore, the periphytonic algae diversity increases under the influence of runoff, as evidenced by the Shannon index. Nevertheless, pronounced changes are noted in the structure of the algal community, as shown by the Pielou index and NMDS. However, these changes in the structure are invisible if the trophic diatom index (TDI) is relied upon.

Celem podjętych badań było określenie najczęściej spotykanych i osobliwych gatunków porostów w Rezerwacie „Lipiny”, położonym na obszarze Puszczy Białowieskiej i ustalenie, czy na badanym obszarze jest możliwość przygotowania ścieżek przyrodniczych dla turystyki pieszej, uwzględniającej obszary bogate w plechy porostowe. Znacznie wzbogaci to ofertę turystyczną terenów. Może być również wykorzystane w edukacji na poziomie podstawowym i średnim.
The aim of this study is to find the most common species of lichens in the Reserve “Lipiny” in the Białowieża Forest. Occurrence of 33 species of lichens, especially epiphytic has been confirmed. Air pollution can be determined by bio-indicators species of lichens. The main feature of lichens as bio-indicators is the ability to absorb water and minerals from rain water and water vapor directly from surface of the thallus. These organisms are extremely sensitive to pollution of the atmosphere, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

The results of bioindication, together with the physical and chemical parameters, may be used in wastewater treatment plant process management. The measurement of saprobiontic microorganisms’ population is a relatively easy and cheap method for assessment of wastewater quality in sewage system. It can be also applied at the inflow of the wastewater treatment plant, at the following devices of technological line, as well as at outflow to receiver. Some methods allow to distinguish between distributions of saprobes population on the basis of species abundances. Splitting of a whole population of saprobes onto morphological-functional groups allows to simplify measurement and thus allow to make it in situ. The main idea of this type of measurement is to study the biocenosis entire structure. Because it is hardly possible, the approximately identified taksocenosis may be utilized for the needs of bioindication. An open question is how to compare the communities with different abundance of saprobes group. However using the different methods of biodiversity assessment the more or less visible differences among studied objects should be expected. In this paper the authors apply some existing distance measures based on entropy definitions to distinguish distributions of morphological-functional groups measured. The presented measures allow to tell how far - in terms of given measure of distance - are two distributions measured in situ, and differentiate them.
Rezultaty pomiarów bioindykacyjnych mogą stanowić przydatne uzupełnienie, a niekiedy nawet alternatywę dla pomiarów fizykochemicznych wykonywanych w celach kontroli i sterowania procesami oczyszczania ścieków. Pomiary liczebności odpowiednio dobranych populacji organizmów saprobiontycznych zasiedlających poszczególne urządzenia oczyszczalni ścieków mogą być relatywnie proste i tanie. Stąd też wykorzystujące je metody pomiarowe są możliwe do zastosowania zarówno do oceny jakości ścieków dopływających do oczyszczalni, oczyszczanych w kolejnych urządzeniach ciągu technologicznego, jak i odprowadzanych po oczyszczeniu do odbiornika. Niektóre ze wspomnianych metod pozwalają oceniać kompozycję zbiorowisk saprobów na podstawie liczebności poszczególnych gatunków. Jednakże podział całej populacji saprobiontów na grupy funkcjonalno-morfologiczne umożliwia znaczne uproszczenie pomiarów oraz wykonywanie ich in situ. Ze względu na fakt, iż pomiar struktury całej biocenozy saprobów jest trudny do realizacji, identyfikacja wybranych taksocenoz może być wykorzystana do celów bioindykacyjnych. Ciągle otwartą kwestią pozostaje, jak najlepiej porównywać pomiędzy sobą zbiorowiska saprobów złożone z grup o różnej liczebności. Używając istniejących metod oceny bioróżnorodności, uzyskać można wartości liczbowe indeksów i wskaźników mniej lub bardziej różnicujące porównywane między sobą zgrupowania organizmów. W niniejszym opracowaniu autorzy wykorzystują sposoby opisu odległości korzystające z definicji entropii w celu jak najlepszego zróżnicowania zbiorowisk, złożonych z grup morfologiczno-funkcjonalnych, do których sklasyfikowano organizmy bytujące w ściekach o różnym stopniu zanieczyszczenia. Prezentowane procedury pozwalają określić, jak daleko - w kategoriach przyjętych miar odległości - znajdują się od siebie rozkłady analizowanych zbiorów i odpowiednio je zróżnicować.

The article demonstrates the results of the research studies related to the air polluted with heavy metals in the area of Swietokrzyski National Park. The two-year-old needles of Abies alba (Mill) were used as the bioindicator with the intention of carrying out the research. The studies were conducted in the autumn of 2012. The results showed the spatial variability of concentrations in the range of the analysed metal deposition patterns in the needles of Abies alba (Mill). The average content of the analysed elements seemed to be the highest in the case of zinc (26.6 mg·kg–1 d.m.), strontium (6.5 mg·kg–1 d.m.) and nickel (1.6 mg·kg–1 d.m.). The research studies revealed that the significant role in determining the content of heavy metals in the two-year-old needles was played by the communication. The highest values were recorded at the research sites situated in the immediate neighbourhood of the voivodeship roads. It was also confirmed that the content of metals was influenced by the so-called low emission from the household and welfare sector together with the remote imission.

Thermal power plants (TPP) belong to the enterprises that accompany the development of any city. These industrial facilities consume and discharge large amounts of water. Therefore, thermal power plants are often located near water bodies that need to assess their ecological state and predict the consequences of the anthropogenic impact. The purpose of the work was to assess the ecological state of the floodplain Lake Ivanovskoye (Russia, Kirov region), which receives the wastewater from a thermal power plant, using a triadic approach and comparing the results of chemical analysis, bioassay and bioindication. It was shown that the main pollutant in the lake and the canal connecting Lake Ivanovskoye with the nearest river Vyatka is ammonium ion (up to 3.2 mg/dm3). In addition, the Russian standards for biological oxygen consumption are exceeded (analysis period is 20 days). The tests for the toxicity of wastewater showed inhibition of Paramecium caudatum and Escherichia coli reactions. In contrast, natural surface water from Lake Ivanovskoye stimulated the test functions of Scenedesmus quadricauda, P. caudatum, and E. coli. The death of Daphnia magna in the samples were not recorded. The totality of the facts pointed to the organic nature of pollution, leading to the anthropogenic eutrophication of the lake. The hypothesis was tested by using the bioindication method and by analyzing the totality of species of coastal aquatic plants. It was shown that the reservoir belongs to the mesotrophic type with a moderate degree of pollution, which decreases with distance from the wastewater discharge points. The increase in the trophicity of the reservoir is facilitated by thermal pollution (up to +15℃) and an alkaline pH of wastewater (up to 9.2). Thus, the joint analysis of the results of chemical analysis, bioassay and bioindication made it possible to carry out an objective assessment of the ecological state of the reservoir and identify the reasons for the revealed facts.
