    Artykuł pokazuje adaptację do pobytu w domu pomocy społecznej (dps) jako zjawisko indywidualne, którego tłem są w dużej mierze dotychczasowe doświadczenia życiowe seniorów. Badania przeprowadzono techniką wywiadu narracyjnego z mieszkańcami jednego z dps-ów w Zabrzu. W ich rezultacie zarysowano szczegółowe problemy dla dalszych badań, których celem powinno być m.in. stworzenie i przetestowanie koncepcji domu spokojnej starości dla mniejszej niż dotąd liczby osób, która w jak największym stopniu uwzględni indywidualne potrzeby seniorów.
    The article shows the adaptation to the stay in a nursing home as an individual phenomena, for which earlier life experience is the very important context. The narrative interviews has been conducted among chosen residents of one of the nursing homes in Zabrze. This resulted in the outline of some problems for further research, that should be aimed at the creation and testing of an idea of a nursing home for smaller groups of residents, in which the very individual needs of seniors will be included.

    Opis:
    One of the common and schematic descriptions in the perspective of the 1989 breakthrough are two ways of dealing with it by people who are respectively called winners or losers of transformation. These stereotypical characteristics are not only the tool to draw the general image of effects of the transition, but are also based on the specific way of interpretation deeply rooted, for example, in neoliberal thinking. Yet, from the perspective of an individual-so-called Schütz’s man on the street-the categorization of winners and losers not only simplifies the description of social reality, but also it cannot be easily biographically justified because the etic categorization is not always relevant to the emic perspective. In other words, the life history of an individual, showing the main phases and events of biography, and life story-the way that one interprets his/her biographical experiences- may not correspond to each other. The analysis of these two aspects of biography (what is lived through and how it is interpreted) shows how people have dealt with the process of transformation. In the paper, it is presented on the basis of one case study.

    The article focuses on the case study of the life history of Weronika, a person biographically experiencing the consequences of the transformation process in Poland. On the one hand, the text concentrates on showing the change in the status of the narrator’s family from a privileged position in the socialist period to the experience of unemployment and poverty after 1989. On the other hand, the text analyzes the necessity of the narrator’s mother’s emigration to Italy in the mid-1990s. Thus, the article focuses on the narrator’s experience in the context of being a migrant woman’s child. This experience is related to the time of socialization and education, which was difficult for the narrator, and the consequence of which is shown in the text in connection to the narrator’s persistence in trajectory. The text also presents the perspective of transnational motherhood within the framework of Polish women’s migrations after 1989. Also, an important perspective adapted in the article is the experience of migration by the narrator, who at the time of the interview has also been living in Italy for 10 years. Permanent emigration of the narrator is associated in her life history with high biographical costs. The article is, therefore, an attempt to present migration as a source of suffering in relation to the context of being a migrant’s child and being a migrant oneself. The analysis of Weronika’s case is also an attempt to show the relationship between the individual experience of the narrator and the mechanisms of collective influence. Thus, the text treats the analyzed life history as one of the biographical accounts reflecting the biographical and social processes assigned to a specific time frame. In this perspective, the text aims to reconstruct the complexity of these processes and to interpret the experienced social reality in an individual biography.

    The paper reconstructs the ways of attributing meanings to IT specialists’ careers at BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) centers in Poland. The findings rely on empirical data, collected through autobiographical narrative interviews. The technique of analysis applied in the study was inspired by grounded theory methodology and allowed for the identification of a basic social process at the analytical stage, namely, “career planning.” On the one hand, the analysis also showed how IT specialists’ careers are given meanings concerning career planning; there seem to be three main ways of understanding one’s career in IT: (1) in terms of reaching economic and social stability, (2) as a transition period in a career as an IT specialist, (3) with regard to becoming an expert in IT. On the other hand, the second axis of analysis has been conceptualized, which is comprised of other subjective and objective elements that may shape career planning. These include the biographical experiences of work, the context of the Polish BPO industry, and career planning resources. Furthermore, a typology consisting of three ways of attributing meanings to IT specialists’ careers at BPO centers has been put forward and analyzed.

    W niniejszym artykule poddałam analizie losy bohaterów filmu pod tytułem Cud purymowy. Celem prowadzonych analiz jest rekonstrukcja losów bohaterów tego filmu, a także ukazanie przemiany, jaka dokonała się w ich życiu. Struktura artykułu składa się z dwóch części – teoretycznej i analitycznej. We wprowadzeniu przedstawiam rys historyczny święta Purim, czyli najważniejszego święta dla przedstawicieli religii mojżeszowej, zwanego żydowskim karnawałem. W części teoretycznej prezentuję zestawienie zagadnień dotyczących wydarzeń przełomowych w życiu człowieka. Następnie wyjaśniam kwestie dotyczące struktur procesowych w ujęciu Fritza Schützego. W części analitycznej przybliżam losy bohaterów filmu Cud purymowy, czyli rodziców (Jana i Jadwigi) oraz ich syna (Henia). Proces odkrywania swojego pochodzenia stanowi wydarzenie przełomowe zarówno dla życia całej rodziny, jak i dla poszczególnych jej członków. Powoduje to zmiany w ich biografii, co wymaga podjęcia pracy biograficznej. Losy bohaterów interpretowane są w odniesieniu do struktur procesowych wyróżnionych przez Fritza Schützego. Symboliczne znaczenie ma sam tytuł filmu, który odnosi się do święta, w trakcie którego dokonała się przemiana bohaterów z katolików w Żydów. Dwukulturowość rodziny ujawnia się nie jednocześnie, lecz linearnie.
    In this article, I analyze the fate of the protagonists of the film titled The Purim Miracle. The purpose of the analysis is to reconstruct the fate of the protagonists, as well as to show the transformations that took place in their lives. The structure of the article consists of two parts: theoretical and analytical. In the introduction, I present a historical outline of Purim, the most important holiday for the representatives of the Mosaic religion, called the Jewish carnival. In the theoretical part, I summarize the issues that relate to landmark events in human life. Then I explain the issues concerning biographical process structures as seen by Fritz Schütze. In the analytical part, I describe the fate of the protagonists of The Purim Miracle, namely the parents (Jan and Jadwiga) and their son (Henio). The process of discovering one’s origins is a watershed event both for the life of the whole family and for individual family members. It causes changes in their biography, which requires biographical work. The fate of the characters is interpreted in relation to the process structures distinguished by Fritz Schütze. The title of the film itself is symbolic, as it refers to the holiday during which the transformation of the characters from Catholics to Jews took place. The biculturalism of the family is revealed not simultaneously, but linearly.

    W dobie rosnącej popularności metody autobiograficznego wywiadu narracyjnego wypracowanej przez Fritza Schützego coraz częściej spotkać możemy błędne jej interpretacje i zastosowania. Wielu badaczy, znając ją fragmentarycznie, wysuwa wobec niej zarzuty zupełnie nietrafione. Pojawiają się też liczne publikacje, które mają zapobiec lub naprawić niedostatki zarówno jeśli chodzi o technikę zbierania danych, analizę zgromadzonego materiału czy też teoretyczne podstawy i epistemologiczne założenia metody. Artykuł ten – odwołując się do purystycznej wykładni koncepcji Schützego przedstawionej na tle historii rozwoju metody biograficznej – ma na celu wyjaśnienie niektórych narosłych wokół niej nieporozumień i wskazać ich źródła. Będzie tu zatem mowa o: często ułudnym poznawczym zysku płynącym z interdyscyplinarności i łączenia technik badawczych, fałszywych założeniach epistemologicznych, niebezpiecznym pomieszaniu autoteorii narratora z teoriami badacza, „rozczarowaniu” narratorem, o jedynie pozornej łatwości techniki wywiadu narracyjnego oraz zdroworozsądkowych (nieugruntowanych w tekście) interpretacjach.
    In the era of rising popularity of the autobiographical narrative interview method elaborated by Fritz Schütze the number of its false interpretations and misuses is growing. At the same time some researchers – knowing it only in the fragmented and piecemeal way – voice their imprudent objections. Moreover, there are proliferating publications seeking to remedy alleged shortages of the method with regard to the technique of data gathering, the very analysis of the narrative interview as well as its ontological and epistemological implications. Viewed against the background of a “purist reading” of the Schütze’s approach and the natural history of biographical method development the paper aims to elucidate some of the accumulated misunderstandings regarding the method and find their roots. Thus, the following issues are discussed here: oftentimes illusory cognitive profits resulting from interdisciplinarity and combing various research techniques, sometimes false epistemological assumptions, a dangerous mixing of narrators’ self-theories with a researcher’s theory, being “disappointed” with an interviewee, an apparent ease of conducting autobiographical narrative interviews and some common-sense (not grounded in the text) interpretations.

    W artykule podjęto namysł nad specyfiką współwystępowania i wzajemnych powiązań między kilkoma odrębnymi znaczeniowo kategoriami: rodzicielstwem, autokreacją i biografią. Przy czym rozważania te przebiegają w kilku płaszczyznach zorientowanych na uchwycenie istoty: a) rodzicielstwa rozpoznawanego jako procesu urzeczywistniania dynamicznej wartości towarzyszenia dziecku, b) autokreacji  ujmowanej w całożyciowym planie rozwoju osobowego człowieka dorosłego w kontekście jego dążenia do bycia i stawania się rodzicem, c) integralnego charakteru związku biografii indywidualnej i zbiorowej (wspólnotowej) z autokreacją osoby dorosłej przebiegającą w przestrzeni wspólnoty małżeńskiej i rodzinnej, d) biograficznego wymiaru autokreacji do rodzicielstwa biologicznego i adopcyjnego. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie argumentacji uzasadniającej tezę, że wspomniane kategorie nie tylko współwystępują, ale w praktyce współistnieją w określonych relacjach zależnościowych. Praca biograficzna małżonków i pozostałych członków rodziny rozpatrywana na poziomie indywidualnym zachowuje łączność symboliczną z biografiami małżeńską i rodzinną. Autokreacja małżonków zachodzi na podłożu ich autorefleksyjnego odniesienia się do własnej biografii zorientowanego prospektywnie. Rodzicielstwo wreszcie rozpatrywane jako proces osiągania dojrzałości rodzica w wieloaspektowo ujmowanym towarzyszeniu dziecku może się urzeczywistniać na podłożu jego osobowej autokreacji do rodzicielstwa.
    The article discusses the specificity of coexistence and mutual relations between several meaningful categories: parenthood, self-creation and biography. These reflections take place in several planes oriented at capturing the essence: a) parenthood recognized as a process of realization of the dynamic value of accompanying a child, b) self-creation included in the lifelong plan of personal development of an adult in the context of his aspiration to be and become a parent, c) the integral nature of the relationship between individual and collective (community) biography and adult self-creation taking place in the space of married and family community, d) the biographical dimension of self-creation to biological and adoptive parenthood. The aim of the article is to present the arguments justifying the thesis that these categories not only coexist, but in practice coexist in specific relationships. The biographical work of spouses and other family members considered on an individual level maintains a symbolic link with marital and family biographies. The self-creation of spouses takes place on the basis of their self-reflexive reference to their own biography oriented prospectively. Finally, parenthood, considered as the process of reaching maturity as a parent in the multi-faceted companionship of a child, can be realized on the basis of their personal self-creation to parenthood.

    Responding to the distrust in biography, widely accepted in literary studies, this article attempts to rethink the relationship between the reader and the author, with a special emphasis put on the role of the biographer. Such a task might help us read such texts authored by Herman Melville as Pierre; or The Ambiguities, which tend to raise our amazement and anxiety with their autobiographical entanglement. Moreover, the analyses of reading habits of the Melville family are crucial if we endeavour to understand Herman Melville’s progressing cosmopolitism and cultural empathy, influenced by the black legend of his grandfather and his involvement in the genocide of Native Americans.
    Odpowiadając na powszechną we współczesnych badaniach literackich niechęć do biografizujących lektur, niniejszy artykuł stawia sobie za zadanie przemyślenie relacji między czytelnikiem i autorem, a zwłaszcza biografem. Ta relacja służyć ma odczytaniu takich tekstów Hermana Melville’a, jak np. Pierre; or, The Ambiguities, które niepokoją i zaskakują swoimi autobiograficznymi uwikłaniami. Refleksje nad zwyczajami czytelniczymi rodziny Melville’ów stają się interpretacyjnym kluczem do zrozumienia postępującego kosmopolityzmu i kulturowej wrażliwości Hermana Melville’a, w obliczu widma jego własnego dziadka i jego uwikłania w ludobójstwo rdzennych Amerykanów.
