Opis:
The National Policy on Forests and the National Programme for the Augmentation of Forest Cover indicate regional needs, possibilities, legal and financial principles of afforestations as the most important elements of the improvement and maintenance of a good state of the country's environment. The documents put emphasis on the need for the establishment and restoration of afforestations between fields, however, neither the guidelines for their legal and administrative status nor sources of financing have been indicated. In many regions of the country, the large−scale afforestation are almost impossible, because high−quality soils are under agricultural production and the local communities lack the alternative means of living. Thus, the mid−field afforestations of a linear or small−surface type could be the only elements differentiating the landscape structure and acting as biogeochemical barriers. Their network perform the same complementary protective functions as forests or other semi−natural ecosystems. With a view to economising expenditures and intensifying effects aiming at the environment protection it is necessary to closely integrate the countryside environmental programmes including the establishment of biogeochemical barriers and afforestations. The principles of such integration and co−ordination of pro−ecological programmes of the landscape structure management should be laid down under a separate research project.

The ProDeMo (Production and Destruction of Organic Matter Model), a 3D coupled hydrodynamic-ecological model, was formulated and applied to the whole Baltic Sea and the subregion of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It describes nutrient cycles (phosphorus, nitrogen, silicon) through the food web with 15 state variables, oxygen conditions and the parameterisation of water-sediment interactions. The present version of the model takes two groups of phytoplankton – diatoms and non-diatoms – as well as zooplankton into consideration. It covers the flow of matter and energy in the sea, including river discharges and atmospheric deposition. Numerical applications are embedded on a 1 NMgri d for the Gulf of Gdańsk and a 5 NMgri d for the Baltic Sea. Since the model results largely concur with observations, the model can be regarded as a reliable tool for analysing the behaviour of the Baltic ecosystem. Some examples of the spatial-temporal variability of the most important biological and chemical parameters are presented. The model results are compared with those of other modelling research in the Baltic Sea. Both the ProDeMo model algorithm and its computing procedures need to be further developed. The next version should therefore enable more phytoplankton groups to be defined, for example cyanobacteria, which are able to take up molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere (nitrogen fixation). Additionally, the sediment phase should be divided into active and non-active layers.

Opis:
The brachiopod faunas from deposits recording the Early–Middle Frasnian transition of Poland are poorly known. The present report describes these faunas that were recovered from Wietrznia and Kostomłoty (Holy Cross Mountains) and Dębnik (Silesian−Cracow Upland) regions positioned on the southern Polish carbonate shelf. The brachiopod distribution was analysed relative to a significant δ¹³C excursion, referred recently to as Palmatolepis punctata Event. The sporadic occurrence of brachiopods at Dębnik makes it difficult to analyse the biotic response to this geochemical anomaly. However, higher brachiopod frequency in the topmost part of the section coincides with a gradual decrease of δ¹³C down to the Frasnian background values. At two studied sections at Wietrznia the greatest taxonomic diversity and abundance of brachiopods (Flabellulirostrum–Coeloterorhynchus assemblage) are confined to the Palmatolepis transitans Zone. In the following Pa. punctata Zone brachiopods are rare (Biernatella lentiformis assemblage) or absent, which suggests a serious deterioration of the environmental conditions linked probably with periods of benthic anoxia−dysoxia and oligotrophic conditions in the basin. In two Kostomłoty sections brachiopods faunas of this age are members of the mostly monospecific rhynchonellid−dominated Phlogoiderhynchus polonicus assemblage which inhabited deeper−water environments characteristic of intrashelf oxygen−depleted basins of ŁysogóryKostomłoty region. In some horizons large shells of P. polonicus were frequently colonised by discinoid Romerella? sp. Among 28 species described in this report new forms include: Flabellulirostrum kielcensis sp. nov., F. rackii sp. nov., and Thomasaria ventosa sp. nov.

Opis:
Biogeochemical and trophodynamic processes as well as hydrodynamic factors play a major role in the structure and function of mangrove ecosystems. This study outlines field experiments on wave motion and suspended sediment concentration carried out at Nang Hai, Can Gio mangrove forest, Southern Vietnam. Pressure sensors were used to measure sea surface elevation, and Optical Backscatter Sensors (OBS) were applied to detect infrared (IR) radiation scattered from suspended particles in order to measure turbidity and suspended sediment concentrations. The experimental results indicate that most of the energy is dissipated inside the mangrove forest as a result of wave-trunk interactions and wave breaking. The suspended sediment concentration depends on wave intensity and tidal current velocity. Wave action is one of the main factors forcing sediment transport and coastal erosion at the study site; even the wave field at the study site is not so strong. The establishment of mangrove vegetation can encourage the deposition of sediment, or at least the retention of the flood-tide sediment influx.

Opis:
The study was carried out in the hydrologic year 2006 and comprised two small agricultural catchments in the Masurian Lakeland. Both catchments possessed very large water retention potential (presence of buffer zones and surface waters in the catchments) but they differed in the intensity of agricultural production. The study has demonstrated that the concentration of phosphorus in the surface waters flowing from the catchments ranged from 0.12 to 0.43 mg⋅dm-3. The catchments were characterised by low indices of water overland flow (0.32-1.67 dm3⋅s-1⋅km-2), which was a decisive factor shaping the runoff of phosphorus (from 0.013 to 0.060 kg⋅ha-1⋅year-1. A subcatchment dewatered by a pipe drain system, which was used for comparison, had a water flow of 3.54 dm3⋅s-1⋅km-2 and exported much more phosphorus with its surface waters (0.39 kg⋅ha-1⋅year-1). The results obtained during our study emphasise an important role played by small landscape water retention elements in both catchments and the efficiency of buffer zones at a contact of water bodies and fields in reducing the runoff of biogenic substances, especially when agricultural production carried out on a given catchment is intensive.

Opis:
The research was carried out on arable soils of the region of Lublin. The aim of the study was to determine the content of Zn extractable in 1 M HCl⋅dm-3 in profiles of selected types of soils and the total content of Zn (measured in aqua regia) in soil samples from the accumulative layer 0-20 cm of the soils. The investigations included 8 morphological types of soils: Rendzic Leptosols (typical rendzinas), Rendzic Leptosols (humic rendzinas), Haplic Phaeozems, Calcaric Cambisols, Haplic Luvisols, Cambic Arenosols, Haplic Podzols, Eutri-Terric Histosols. The content of zinc (Zn) was measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). In mineral soils the highest content of total Zn was found in rendzinas (48.0-55.8 mg⋅kg-1 DM) and the lowest one appeared in rusty soil and in podzolic soil – about 13 mg Zn⋅kg-1 each, at average 24.5 mg⋅kg-1. Average concentration of available forms of zinc was 5.2 mg Zn⋅kg-1. The amount of this element in soils was from 2.0 mg Zn⋅kg-1 in the level Cca of typical rendzinas to 17.0 mg Zn⋅kg-1 in the accumulative level of peat soil. In most profiles the highest concentration of soluble form of Zn was present in the accumulative layer and was usually decreasing deeper in the profile. The distribution of Zn in profiles was shaped by the biological accumulation of this element in the humus horizon and natural biogeochemical processes.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify whether the biogeochemical features (e.g. concentration of nutrients, oxygen consumption, mineralization rate, Eh) of sediments changed by the zebra mussel or its shell deposits differ from those in the ambient soft bottom, and how these differences are related to the structure of benthic macroinvertebrates. In 2006 three sampling sessions were carried out in the Curonian Lagoon, SE Baltic Sea, at three pre-defined sites, corresponding to different bottom types: zebra mussel bed, zebra mussel shell deposits and bare soft sediments. Similarity analysis of biogeochemical parameters indicated that bottom sediments covered with zebra mussel shell deposits were rather distinct from the other bottom types because of the lowest total organic matter mineralization rate and highest organic carbon, total phosphorus and total nitrogen content. The parameters measured in the zebra mussel bed did not deviate conspicuously from the values observed in bare bottoms, except for the higher rate of oxygen consumption in the upper sediment layer. Unsuitable anoxic conditions on the one hand and the ‘attractive’ shelters provided by zebra mussels on the other hand may promote the epifaunal life style in the habitats formed by dense zebra mussel clumps.

Microorganisms activity have large influence on composition of minerals and rocks due to biogeochemical processes in the lithosphere weathering zone. In each environment specific autochthonous microorganisms occur and knowledge of their activity and certain biochemical processes is very important in understanding the geochemical cycles of elements, minerals and organic compounds. Physical and chemical conditions of environment strongly influence the composition of bacterial communities. Depending on their properties, the activity of one group of microorganisms, may affect the chemical reactions on significant way and can moderate the direction of biogeochemical processes. The paper is focused on the role of aerobic microbial communities and products of their metabolism in biogeochemical conditions at the weathered zone.

Microorganisms play key roles in the biosphere, particularly in the areas of element biotransformations and biogeochemical cycling, mineral transformations, decomposition, bioweathering, and soil and sediment formation. Direct and indirect physical, chemical and biochemical mechanisms are involved in mineral biotransformation by microbes. The role of anaerobic microorganisms and influence of their activity products on geological environmental condition in the weathering zone of lithosphere is discussed. The most important anaerobic microorganisms are sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogenic Archaea. These groups of microorganisms play significant role in biodegradation of organic matter and participate in formation of different kind of mineral phases e.g. carbonates and metal sulphides.

Opis:
The vertical profiles of phosphate, total CO2 and oxygen/hydrogen sulphide were determined in the deep water of the Gotland Sea during March 2003 to July 2006 with a temporal resolution of 2–3 months. This time span included the shift from anoxic to oxic conditions resulting from a water renewal event, as well as the transition back to anoxic waters during the subsequent two-year stagnation period. The data from depths below 150 m were used to identify and quantify phosphate release and removal processes. The relationship between the total CO2 generated by mineralization (CT1 min) and the PO4 concentrations indicated that the initial decrease in the phosphate concentrations after the inflow of oxygen-rich water was mainly a dilution effect. Only about one third of the PO4 removal was a consequence of the precipitation of insoluble iron-3-hydroxo-phosphates (Fe-P), which occurred slowly at the sediment surface under oxic conditions. From the CT1 min/PO4 ratios it was also concluded that the formation of Fe-P was reversed during the later phase of the stagnation, when the redoxcline approached a depth of 150 m. A phosphate mass balance was performed for four deep water sub-layers in order to quantify the dissolution of Fe-P during the stagnation period and thus to estimate the amount of Fe-P deposited during the last inflow of oxygen-rich water. A value of about 50 mmol-P m−2 was found, which refers to the specific biogeochemical conditions during the change from anoxic to oxic conditions that preceded the stagnation period.

This work presents a one-dimensional simulation of the seasonal changes in CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The results of the model were constrained using data from observations, which improved the model’s ability to estimate nitrogen fixation in the central Baltic Sea and allowed the impact of nitrogen fixation on the ecological state of the Baltic Sea to be studied. The model used here is the public domain water-column model GOTM (General Ocean Turbulence Model), which in this study was coupled with a modifed Baltic Sea ecosystem model, ERGOM (The Baltic Sea Research Institute’s ecosystem model). To estimate nitrogen fixation rates in the Gotland Sea, the ERGOM model was modified by including an additional cyanobacteria group able to fix nitrogen from March to June. Furthermore, the model was extended by a simple CO2 cycle. Variable C:P and N:P ratios, controlled by phosphate concentrations in ambient water, were used to represent cyanobacteria, detritus and sediment detritus. This approach improved the model’s ability to reproduce sea-surface phosphate and pCO2 dynamics. The resulting nitrogen fixation rates in 2005 for the two simulations, with and without the additional cyanobacteria group, were 259 and 278 mmol N m−2 year−1 respectively.

Anthropogenic sources of pollution these elements is primarily the burning of fuels, both in power and heating plants and power plants as well as regional and local municipal boiler houses, as well as in the home. In addition to the natural environment gets heavy metals as a result of non-ferrous metals and iron, waste incineration and transport. The rapid development of technology and the changes that are occurring in the world today largely affect on the environment. One of the primary sources of pollution of the biosphere are industrial plants, which emit both gaseous substances (eg. Carbon monoxide, sulfur and nitrogen) and dust, containing all sorts of toxic substances. For the serious consequences of the development of civilization and industry should be spread include heavy metals [6]. Included in the atmosphere, dust and heavy metals fall to the ground parts of plants and enters the soil. Shall be collected by the roots of plants or animals grazing on the roads and thus incorporated into the food chain. These elements are not biodegradable.
