Od czerwca do października 2007 roku miejscem badań fizyczno-chemicznych i hydrobiologicznych było duże Jezioro Turawskie. Celem badań jest pokazanie procesu rozwoju glonów pod wpływem istniejących warunków fizykochemicznych wody jeziornej. Częstotliwość badań zależna była od nasilenia zjawisk (nasłonecznienie, temperatura powietrza i wody, wiatr) mogących mieć wpływ na zakwity, średnio: raz w tygodniu. Wyróżniono grupy systematyczne glonów planktonowych: Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae. Oznaczono wśród nich przedstawicieli głównie z rodzajów Microcystis, Asterionella, Fragilara, Closterium, Cosmarium, Pediastrum. W całym okresie badawczym na podstawie częstości występowania wyodrębnić można grupę gatunków charakterystycznych dla fitoplanktonu Jeziora Turawskiego, strefy przybrzeżnej. Są to: sinice (Microcystis aeruginosa, Microcystis viridis), okrzemki (Asterionella formosa i Fragilaria crotonensis). Zakres badań fizykochemicznych wody obejmował badanie: pH, temperatury wody, tlenu rozpuszczonego, zawartości azotu, fosforu, żelaza, BZT5, ChZT. Wartości analizowanych wskaźników fizykochemicznych wody Jeziora Turawskiego nie pozwalają na zakwalifikowanie go do II klasy czystości wód.
From June until October of 2007 Turawa Resevoir was the place of a physicochemical and hydrobiological examination. The samples were taken once a week on average. The following plankton algae systematical groups were distinguished: Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae. Among them the respresentatives of the following genus were mostly determined: Microcystis, Asterionella, Fragilara, Closterium, Cosmarium, Pediastrum. During the whole examination period on the basis of the appearance intensity of typical groups of species of phytoplankton of Turawa Lake (littoral area) can be distinguished and these are: cyanosis (Microcystis aeruginosa, Microcystis viridis), diatoms (Asterionella formosa and Fragilaria crotonensis). Physicochemical tests of the water included: pH, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen content, phosphorus, iron, BOD5, COD. In terms of water cleanliness, the values of the physicochemical indicators anaylsed from Turawa Lake do not even allow it to qualify as a 2nd Class water source.

The aim of the paper was to determine the possibility of the use of Shewhart control charts to monitor changes in the forms of nitrogen, showing the quality of wastewater discharged from the wastewater treatment plant in Krosno in the years 2010-2015. The performed statistical analysis showed the highest number of cases of elevated nitrate nitrogen and/or ammonium nitrogen when the temperature of treated wastewater was below 8-9°C. This low temperature resulted in adverse effect on the activity of bacteria that were involved in biological removal of nitrogen. It was found that in the winter months, the second stage of nitrifying bacteria responsible for oxidation of nitrite to nitrate, exhibited higher activity than the denitrifying bacteria. Graphical presentation of total nitrogen content using control charts for the mean of the process revealed the exceedance of the upper specification line (USL = 10 mgNtot·dm-3) in the months from December to April. It was observed that the total nitrogen removal process in the months from June to November was stable with a very high 90% reduction in biogenic activity. The obtained results confirm the efficacy of control charts as a tool which can easily be applied in the statistical process control of total nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

When considering the issue of the functioning of small water reservoirs, the attempt to assess changes in trophy of small retention reservoir located in Wasilkow, Podlasie, before and after remediation, was carried out. Water samples tests were carried out once a month from April 2007 to March 2008, from April 2009 to March 2010 (before remediation), and from April 2013 to March 2014 (after removal of silt). Prior to works related to the reservoir remediation, a gradual increase in the number of tested contaminants and disturbances in the seasonal occurrence of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were observed. Advanced eutrophic processes in Wasilków reservoir occur probably due to the supply of large amounts of humic and biogenic substances from the catchment, because a significant percentage of its area is covered by forests and agricultural lands. The development of the trophic status of the reservoir is largely influenced by the amount of phosphorus and total nitrogen supplied to the reservoir; the least affected by chlorophyll “a”. Comparing the analyses performed in 2007/2008 and 2009/2010, a slight, but growing trend of average trophic levels of water in the basin Wasilków was found. Studies conducted in 2013/2014 revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of all analyzed pollutants, and hence lower TSI values. It can be concluded that the reclamation associated with the removal of sediments brought the expected results.

When analyzing the symptoms of eutrophication and water quality in a small retention reservoir Bachmaty, an attempt to assess changes in its trophic condition before and after modernization, was undertaken. The study upon changes in water trophic level was carried out on a small retention reservoir Bachmaty located in Podlasie region on the Orlanka river in the municipality of Dubicze Cerkiewne. Tests of water samples collected from the surface layer of the coastal zone were performed once a month, and the time of the research was divided into two periods. The first period was conducted since April 2007 to March 2008 and since April 2009 to March 2010. The second research period included the time immediately after the reservoir reclamation, which ended in May 2011. The study was conducted since May 2011 to March 2012 and since April 2013 to March 2014. The trophic level of Bachmaty reservoir was also assessed according to the concentration criteria and based on the trophic status indices (TSI) calculated after Carlson’s as well as Kratzer and Brezonik’s. Reclamation of the reservoir, which consisted mainly in removing the sediments, caused a reduction in all TSI values. Analysing the overall trophic level index, i.e. the average of TSI (TP), TSI (TN), and TSI (Chl), water of the Bachmaty reservoir may be classified as eutrophic in individual years of the research, although a gradual decline in the TSI value could be observed directly after the reservoir modernizing. After testing it was found that the formation of the trophic level of Bachmaty reservoir was largely affected by the amount of total phosphorus supplied to the water. Water quality in the reservoirs, and also the content of phosphorus compounds is largely determined by external supply.

Studies upon the trophic status were carried out using water samples from a small retention reservoir Topiło located in a particularly valuable natural forests of Puszcza Białowieska. In order to assess the degree of Topiło reservoir contamination, three measurement and control points were selected for testing, which were situated near the inflow (point No. 1) and outflow (point No. 3) of river Perebel, as well as in the middle part of the reservoir (point No. 2). The selection and placement of measurement and control points on the reservoir was dictated by the ability to capture changes in the study object. Tests of water samples collected from the surface layer of the coastal zone, were carried out once a month during the period from April 2007 to March 2014. The following determinations in collected water samples were performed: total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll “a”, and turbidity. The trophic level of Topiło reservoir was also assessed according to the concentration criteria and based on the trophic status indices (TSI) calculated after Carlson’s as well as Kratzer and Brezonik’s. Given the annual average value of overall trophic level (Trophic Sta-tus Index), the dominant role of the TSI (TP) during all years of research attracts some attention. The TSI index values ranged within 78.3–80.26, which allowed to classify the water of Topiło reservoir as hypertrophic. The research indicates an advanced and constantly progressive degradation of water quality in Topiło reservoir. Values of TSI (Chl) were in the range of 49.2–77.35 and therefore water status in winter can be defined as eutrophic indicating the hypertrophy in remaining periods under study. Additional investments planned for advance reclamation treatments should be necessarily taken into consideration at the stage of planning and design of new small water retention reservoirs. Topiło reservoir requires modernization and reclamation, it is also necessary to clean it up, especially the bottom pond, out of the stocked wood residues, as well as to remove the excess of sludge.

This paper presents the Late Glacial stage of the development of the Białe Ługi peatland in the southern Holy Cross Mountains, based on a comprehensive palaeoenvironmental data. A complex analysis of palynology, Cladocera, sedimentology, geochemistry and 14C dating were used. Organic deposition was initiated during the Oldest Dryas. The sedimentary record of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems reflects considerable difference between cooler (Oldest, Older and Younger Dryas) and warmer phases (Bølling and Allerød). Periods of intensified interaction between aeolian processes and peatland are related to stages of disappearing vegetation and changes in aquatic invertebrate communities. We therefore suggest that peatlands were created as a result of local lithological-structural, tectonic, hydrogeological and morphological conditions, and the peatland development rate was largely influenced by changing climatic conditions, which determined local vegetation development, intensity of denudation processes and water level changes. The results validate significance of selection and use of several methods, as well as value of biogenic deposits from the Białe Ługi peatland as archives of past climate change in the Małopolska Upland. Relatively stable water conditions and uninterrupted biogenic sedimentation in the Late Glacial that were provided by the geological structure and relief suggest the studied peatland is a leading one in the region.

The study aimed at determining the changes in the trophic status of the processes associated with the risk of eutrophication in small retention reservoir in Korycin, characterized by agricultural performance of direct and indirect catchment. The study was conducted using the surface water samples that were collected systematically every month over four hydrological years (2008 to 2014) from three research points. Mean annual concentration of total phosphorus varied from 0.641 mg P/dm3 during research conducted in 2007/2008 to 0.874 mg P/dm3 in 2013/2014 showing an increasing trend from year to year. Taking into account the calculated average values, an upward trend can be seen along with particular years of the study from the annual average value of 1.44 mg N/dm3 determined in the first year to the value of 2.66 mg N/dm3 recorded in the last year of the study. It was observed during the study that in non-flowing parts of Korycin reservoir, plankton developed more abundantly than in the central fragments, where the flow of water is more intensive. A mild growth of phytoplankton in the waters of Korycin reservoir is provided by relatively low concentrations of chlorophyll “a” found during all research periods. Concentrations of chlorophyll “a” in waters of the reservoir were within the range of 4.08 to 5.21 g/dm3. At a Schindler coefficient > 2, this value, based on the Decree of the Minister of the Environment of 2011, should not exceed 7 and therefore waters of the Korycin reservoir during the research can be classified as the first class. Values of the general trophic level (Trophic State Index) during the first three years of the study ranged from 67.15 to 68.65, which enabled to count waters of the reservoir in Korycin to eutrophic ones. In the last year of the analyzes, this coefficient increased to a value of 72.43, classifying its waters as hypertrophic. The largest share in such a situation was expressed by TSI (TP), which ranged from 97.34 to 101.82, always classifying the waters to hypertrophic ones. In contrast, the indicator TSI (TN) ranged from 59.71 to 68.57 and it classified the reservoir waters to eutrophic, while TSI (Chl) to mesotrophic.

Sediment geochemistry and lithology were studied in Gostyń Lake in the eastern part of the Myślibórz Lakeland (part of the Western Pomeranian Lake District). The research was undertaken because relatively shallow lake basins without ground supply contribute to the intensification of water circulation through evaporation. Late Glacial and Holocene phases in the evolution of Gostyń Lake were reconstructed based on selected geochemical indicators (Fe/Mn, S/Fe, Na/K, Mg/Ca, Cu/Zn, Na+K+Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca) as well as on the presence of human activity (Stone Age, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age and Roman Period). Also, the geochemical and archaeological data were correlated. Generally, the lithogeochemical composition variability in the Gostyń Lake deposits was found to be controlled by changes in: 1) the climate, related to the biogenic accumulation environment, 2) land cover in the Late Glacial and Holocene, and 3) human activities. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed four major variable groups responsible for the changes: hydroclimatic variations which determined the type of sedimentary conditions during the Holocene climate optimum; changes in the organic matter provenance (along with conditions favouring sulphide precipitation); and denudation processes in the Gostyń Lake catchment. The methods used allowed the distribution of ancient settlement to be traced. Interpretation of the geochemical indicators (Fe/Mn, Cu/Zn, S/Fe, Ca/Fe) should involve many more factors which, in the relevant literature, are treated as measures of changes in redox conditions

The aim of the study was to determine the value and concentration indicators of BOD5, COD and general nitrogen in domestic wastewater after mechanical treatment, which should be considered in the design of the activated sludge reactor. Ninety-nine samples of raw wastewater and after mechanical treatment were then collected and physicochemical analysis was carried out. The quantity of pollutants in the raw wastewater was verified to determine if this was domestic wastewater. The next stage of the analysis included the definition of the characteristic quantity of the analysed indicators in wastewater after mechanical treatment, which should be taken into account while calibrating computer programs supporting the design of biological reactor chambers. A detailed analysis led to the conclusion that mean values for BOD5 - 300 mgO2·dm-3, for COD - 500 mgO2·dm-3and for total nitrogen 50 mgN·dm-3 should be applied. The work also determined the susceptibility of wastewater after mechanical treatment to the decomposition of organic and biogenic compounds.

Gromadzenie wody w zbiornikach małej retencji jest istotnym elementem poprawy bilansu wody, zwłaszcza w naszym kraju o niewielkich zasobach wodnych. Badaniami objęto dwa zbiorniki małej retencji w miejscowościach Jasionówka i Korycin (o zlewniach typowo rolniczych), położone w całości w granicach Zielonych Płuc Polski, na terenie województwa podlaskiego. Na terenach bezpośrednio otaczających akweny nie odnotowano żadnych większych ośrodków przemysłowych, które mogłyby zdecydowanie negatywnie wpływać na jakość wody w zlewiskach. Na podstawie analizy uzyskanych wyników badań można stwierdzić, iż dominującą formą występowania azotu w próbkach wody pochodzących z obu zbiorników retencyjnych był azot organiczny, który stanowił 80,86 % azotu ogólnego w przypadku zbiornika Jasionówka i 62,64 % w Korycinie. Świadczy to o dużym zanieczyszczeniu wody związkami organicznymi. Ponadto stwierdzono wyraźną sezonowość występowania związków biogennych, które bezpośrednio decydują o eutrofizacji w wodach obu zbiorników. Parametrami najbardziej obniżającymi ocenę jakościową wody w obu zbiornikach okazały się: barwa, mętność, fosforany, azot Kjeldahla, ChZT-Mn, oraz zawartość żelaza.
Accumulation of water in low-retention reservoirs is an important element for water resources. The study included two low-retention reservoirs in Jasionówka and Korycin (typically agricultural catchment) localized fully within Polish Green Lungs area in Podlasie region. No major industrial centers that would have negative impact on water quality in catchments were found in a direct neighborhood of studied reservoirs. The analysis of achieved results revealed that organic nitrogen containment is making up 80,86% of the total nitrogen in case of Jasionówka reservoir and 62,64% in Korycycin reservoir and was its dominating form in water samples. It proves the great contamination of waters with organic compounds, which was confirmed by relatively high CODMn values as the indicator of organic matter load. Analysis of achieved results revealed an apparentseason-dependent character of biogenic substance occurrence, which directly determined the eutrophization of both reservoirs' water. Parameters that the strongest decreased the water quality in both reservoirs were: color, turbidity, Kjeldahl's nitrogen, CODMn, iron and phosphates content.

The content of biogenic substances, i.e. ammonia (NH4+), nitrates (NO3 ) and phosphates (PO4 3–), in the mountain stream waters was studied. The test (zero) sample was the water flowing from forest areas, while the study samples included the water from the streams flowing through extensively used sheep pastures. The impact of grazing on the water quality during high (in the rainy season) and low (in the dry period) water flows was assessed. The studies demonstrated the water contamination with ammonia, particularly during the rainy season. The contamination was also present in the test sample, so it cannot be attributed to the grazing activity. The highest nitrate concentrations were reported in the dry period. An influence of grazing on the migration of nitrates into waters was found, however, on a scale causing no contamination. The water contamination with phosphates was found. The studies demonstrated that extensive grazing did not affect the fertilisation of mountain stream water, yet the water quality may be deteriorated by the surface runoff processes and soil cover erosion.

The study aimed at comparing changes in the trophic status of waters in two small retention reservoirs “Otapy-Kiersnówek” and “Jasionówka”, located in the Podlasie region, which have a similar way of management and the similarity of catchments, using the TSI trophy indicators. The obtained results show that total phosphorus is the limiting factor in both reservoirs. Analyzing the average annual value of TSI in the tested waters, it was found that both reservoirs can be classified as hypertrophic. Trophic state of the tested waters is strictly dependent on the processes taking place in their vicinity. The reservoirs revealed a clear effect of a surface runoff on water quality. Factors that favor the poor quality of water in both reservoirs are unfavorable morphometric conditions of reservoirs due to their small depth, which allows continuous mixing and strong heating of water in spring and summer. Additional causes can include an open space around the reservoirs and the lack of high vegetation that would shield the edges against the wind, which facilitates often mixing of waters to the bottom and resuspension of bottom sediments, which in turn increases the concentration of phosphorus in water.

The paper presents change of water quality within Vistula River in the city of Warsaw. Water samples for analysis were taken from four different measurement points in the period from February to June 2016. Based on the results of laboratory studies it was demonstrated that the Vistula River in Warsaw is exposed to the input of pollutants contributing to increase the salinity, especially in winter and early spring. The concentration of both chlorides and sulphates were highest in February and was decreasing in subsequent months of the year. At the same time it has been shown that during the entire study period the concentration of Cl– ion exceeded the limit values for water quality II class in Poland. While the SO4 2– concentrations in water samples taken in the winter months (February-March) exceeded the limit values for the second quality class, in April, it was within the acceptable range for II class water quality, and in May and June does not exceed the value referred to as standard for I class of water quality. Based on the analysis of indicators of nutrients (N-NH4 , N-NO3 , Ptot.) it was found that the Vistula is not exposed to eutrophication due to their low concentration, which indicates a very good water quality. At the same time permanganate index (CODMn) indicates a low organic load of Vistula.

Badania składu chemicznego osadów dennych przeprowadzono w 2007 roku w zatoce Pilwa. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań osadów dennych w aspekcie oceny wybranych parametrów fizykochemicznych tych osadów. Stwierdzono m.in., że wieloletni dopływ zanieczyszczeń pochodzący z intensywnej produkcji rolnej i rozwój roślinności w zatoce spowodował zakumulowanie dużej ilości osadów dennych. Akumulacja biogenów w osadach zatoki stanowi główny element ochrony jeziora przed zanieczyszczeniami w warunkach naturalnych. Oznaczone składniki pod względem stężenia w osadach dennych można uszeregować następująco: Ca > Nog > Mg > Na > Pog > K.
The chemical composition of bottom deposits was analyzed in 2007 in the Pilwa Bay. Selected physicochemical parameters of the studied bottom deposits are presented in the paper. Long-term exposure to agricultural pollution and vegetation growth in the Bay contributed to the deposition of bottom sediments. The accumulation of biogenic elements in the bottom deposits of Pilawa Bay plays a key role in protecting the lake’s environment against pollution under natural conditions. With respect to their accumulation in bottom deposits, the analyzed elements may be arranged in the following descending order: Ca > NTot > Mg > Na > PTot > K.

The results of geochemical assays on biogenic sediments filling a fossil lacustrine basin at Wąwelnica, in the Szczecin Hills, within the left-bank part of the Oder River catchment are presented. The data reveal a natural Holocene sedimentation sequence similar to that found for other sites in central Europe. The geochemical record of palaeo-environmental changes, which may be a consequence of human activities in the proximity of the site, is distinctly bipartite. The part of the profile corresponding to the lacustrine sediment accumulation during the Greenlandian occasionally shows an increased mineral content and an elevated catchment erosion index. An incidental presence of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic communities is confirmed by archaeological evidence from a few sites in the Szczecin Hills. More distinct episodes of mineral matter supply and more pronounced changes in geochemical indicators can be inferred as occurring from the onset of the older part of the Atlantic until the Older Subboreal. Most of the flint artefacts discovered along with a collection of vessel fragments in the Mierzyn-Dołuje area are associated with the Neolithic occupation. However, changes in the deposits’ geochemistry do not reflect all the settlement stages associated with the consecutive human groups identified by archaeological evidence. Possible reasons include a low sediment accumulation rate having restricted peat mass accretion and prevented the storing of any higher amounts of water. This, along with the climate-change-caused lowering of the water table, could have periodically stopped the accumulation of autochthonous organic matter. In addition, intensified human activities coincided with periods of stable and low water level in the basin. On the other hand, breaks in human activity correspond with moist Holocene stages and local flooding events.

This research is focused on a small kettle hole located within the Morąg moraines (Iława Lake District, NE Poland). The study objective was to determine the impact of palaeoenvironmental changes in sedimentation and properties of sediments filling the bottom of the kettle hole. Sedimentological, geochemical, and palaeobotanical studies enabled us to distinguish several development phases of the kettle hole, and cluster analysis performed on physicochemical data yielded seven local geochemical zones (JuI/I to JuI/VII). The beginning of biogenic sedimentation in the conditions of a small water body, functioning in the Late Glacial period (4.20–4.10 m), was determined on the basis of palaeobotanical research. Sediments deposited in the lake during its further evolution were rich in microelements such as Ca, Na, Mg, and K, and to a smaller extent – Fe and Mn (JuI/I–III local geochemical zones). The Late Glacial lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of very silty, pollen-free gyttja, with a stratigraphic hiatus (JuI/IV, 3.40–3.20 m). The sediments were enriched with SiO2ter, which indicates an increased rate of slope erosion, and concretions of Fe-Mn occurring below this layer (JuIII) provide evidence for lowering of the water level and even desiccation. In the Holocene, the lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of coarse detrital gyttja (3.20–2.60 m). Palaeobotanical data indicate that the next group of sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal and Subatlantic periods (2.60–0.0 cm, JuI/V–VII; sedge peat). Their properties were varied and related to hydrologic conditions, limited denudation, and vegetation succession. There was also a significant change in the trophic conditions of the water and consequently in the sediments of the kettle hole, which changed during the lacustrine period from basic to acid, and strongly acid in the surface layer. This reaction may be related to a change in the water regime as well as to human impact in the environment, which led to the colonization of the peat bog by Sphagnum moss.

In the paper, there was shown the natural and economical significance of lowmoors in Poland and especially in Białystok county. In the area of Poland there is about 49,6 thousands of lowmoors which cover 1,2 mln ha [4% of the country surface]. 90% of this surface are lowmoors, 6% – highmoors and 4% – transitial moors. The most substantial role in the environment play lowmoors, characterised by high ability of water retention. In Poland, peatmoors gather 34 mld m3 of water, which has essential significance in decreasing of water resources on the country surface. In the area of Białystok county, there are 147 peatmoors and cover the surface of 8181 ha, which amounts 2,7% of the district surface. These peatmoors can retain such water quantity which is close to the capacity of water reservoir of Siemianówka. There was shown the signifi cant role of lowmoors in the specimen diversity of hygrophilous fauna and fl ora. In Białystok county, lowmoors are mainly used as stable grassland, which provide to proper protection against progressive unfavourable changes.

Zasoby wodne powstają głównie na obszarach rolnych i leśnych, które stanowią odpowiednio około 51 i 29% powierzchni Polski. Wymywane z terenów użytkowanych rolniczo organiczne i mineralne substancje wpływają niekorzystnie na jakość wód powierzchniowych, niekiedy w większym stopniu niż odprowadzane do nich wody zanieczyszczone ściekami przemysłowymi. Decydujący wpływ na jakość i ilość wód ma prawidłowe gospodarowanie wodą w krajobrazie rolniczym, u źródeł powstawania zasobów wodnych. W celu ochrony wód przed zanieczyszczeniami obszarowymi konieczne jest racjonalne kształtowanie krajobrazu poprzez tworzenie wśród pól uprawnych barier biogeochemicznych, które w istotny sposób powstrzymują odpływ składników chemicznych.
The aim of this research was an assessment of water quality and biogenic compounds loads eluted from the small catchment of the Dębina River. The river flows through the Kłeckie Lake which is strongly polluted and susceptible to degradation [5]. The basis of this paper were results of field study conducted in 2007 hydrological year in the catchment of the Dębina River down to Borzątew cross-section. Assessment of a physico-chemical state of the river was made according to Polish river water quality standards [6, 7]. Annual loads of ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen and phosphorus were computed on the basis of statistical methods [4]. Total nitrogen and phosphorus loads were calculated as products of the mean flow and mean concentrations of Nog. and Pog. The water of Dębina River were characterized by a high concentration of nitrate and low concentration of ammonium nitrogen. Mean concentrations of nitrite ranged from 6.0 mg NO3∙dm-3 in summer half year to 54.8 mg NO3∙dm-3 in winter half year. The annual loads of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were differentiated. The nitrate nitrogen loads leaching from the catchment were the highest and equal to 10.25 N-NO3 kg∙ha-1∙yr-1, and nitrite nitrogen loads were the lowest and equal to 0.12 N-NO2 kg∙ha-1∙yr-1. Analyses of nitrogen compounds leaching from the catchment of the Dębina River showed that in the winter half years they reached 83% of annual loads. In summer half year the loads were smaller and amounted 1.24 kg∙ha-1∙yr-1. The load of total nitrogen leaching from the catchment achieved 11.54 kg∙ha-1∙yr-1, in which nitrate nitrogen load amounted to 89% and nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen about 1% only. In order to reduce nitrate nitrogen loads flowing into the Kłecko Lake it is necessary to decrease the use of fertilizers and to create biogeochemical zones along the river course and to build sewage networks.

This study examined selected physical and chemical parameters of bottom deposits in the Pilwa Bay (Lake Dobskie) supplied by watercourses draining intensively farmed areas. The chemical composition of bottom deposits was analyzed in 2007. It was found that long-term exposure to agricultural pollution and vegetation growth in the Bay contributed to the deposition of bottom sediments. The accumulation of biogenic elements in the surface layer of bottom deposits reached 77.0 kgNtot, 11.0 kgPtot, 8.0 kgK, 704 kgCa, 59.6 kgMg, 17.1 kgNa per hectare of catchment area, and it was equivalent to 14-year nitrogen loads, 36-year phosphorus loads, 2-year potassium loads, 8-year calcium loads, 5-year magnesium loads and 2-year sodium loads. The accumulation of biogenic elements in the bottom deposits of Pilwa Bay plays a key role in protecting the lake’s environment against pollution under natural conditions. With respect to their accumulation in bottom deposits, the analyzed elements may be arranged in the following descending order: Ca > Ntot > Mg > Na > Ptot > K.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań osadów dennych w zatoce Pilwa jeziora Dobskiego, do której dopływają cieki odwadniające obszary o intensywnej produkcji w aspekcie oceny wybranych parametrów fizykochemicznych tych osadów. Badania składu chemicznego osadów dennych przeprowadzono w 2007 r. Stwierdzono m.in., że wieloletni dopływ zanieczyszczeń pochodzący z intensywnej produkcji rolnej i rozwój roślinności w zatoce spowodował zakumulowanie dużej ilości osadów dennych. Akumulacja biogenów w wierzchniej warstwie osadów wynosiła: 77,0 kgNog, 11,0 kgPog, 8,0 kgK, 704 kgCa, 59,6 kgMg, 17,1 kgNa na jeden ha zlewni, co równało się z 14-letnim dopływem azotu, 36-letnim fosforu, 2-letnim potasu, 8-letnim wapnia, 5-letnim magnezu oraz 2-letnim dopływem sodu. Akumulacja biogenów w osadach zatoki stanowi główny element ochrony jeziora przed zanieczyszczeniami w warunkach naturalnych. Oznaczone składniki, pod względem stężenia w osadach dennych można uszeregować następująco: Ca > Nog > Mg > Na > Pog > K.

The specific of water management in the urbanized ares (regulation of watercourses, discharges of municipal and industrial effluents etc.) have resulted in the transformation of the natural drainage system of the basin of Kłodnica, in which Dzierżno Duże water reservoir is located. The main goal of this study was to designate the content of total phosphorus and total nitrogen, and relations between these elements and organic matter, level of depth, aluminum and iron in the bottom sediments of the Dzierżno Duże water reservoir. Bottom sediments samplings consisted of grid measurement network planning, on which bottom sediments samples were collected. The collected samples were analyzed in laboratory in terms of content of chosen elements. Values of these elements are in range: total phosphorus 0.08÷6.02 g/kg, total nitrogen 0.15÷9.03 g/kg, organic matter 0.20÷50.90% of solid content, aluminum 0.48÷39.32 g/kg and iron 0.82÷25.42 g/kg. To improve quality of performed analysis, by using Geographic Information System the spatial distributions (the Inverse Distance Method was used) of studied elements were generated. Generated spatial distributions enabled to determine sites with highest and lowest values. Bottom sediments of Dzierżno Duże water reservoir have greater values of total phosphorus, total nitrogen and organic matter in central regions than in coastal zone. The study also included calculation of correlation between: organic matter and total nitrogen (R2 = 0.6), total nitrogen and Fe (R2 = 0.44), total nitrogen and Al (R2 = 0.5), organic matter and Fe (R2 = 0.39), organic matter and Al (R2 = 0.55), total phosphorus and Fe (R2 = 0.57), total phosphorus and Al (R2 = 0.56). The presented pilot studies may provide a basis for identifying harmful human activities and planning methods of counters measures. Dzierżno Duże water reservoir, among other functions, is a spot (mainly for local residents), therefore it should be monitored constantly.
Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu ocenę zawartości fosforu i azotu w osadach dennych zbiornika wodnego Dzierżno Duże wraz z opracowaniem ich przestrzennego rozkładu przy wykorzystaniu modelowania przestrzennego. Podjęto również próbę wyznaczenia możliwej relacji między wymienionymi elementami a zawartością substancji organicznej, żelaza i glinu w materiale badawczym. Próbki osadów dennych pobrano na podstawie regularnej siatki pomiarowej z 53 stanowisk usytuowanych w obszarze zbiornika wodnego Dzierżno Duże. W pozyskanych próbkach wykonano następujące oznaczenia, których wartości mieściły się w przedziałach: fosfor całkowity 0,08÷6,02 g/kg, azot całkowity 0,15÷9,03 g/kg, zawartość materii organicznej 0,20÷50,90% suchej masy osadu dennego, glin 0,48÷39,32 g/kg, żelazo 0,82÷25,42 g/kg. W pracy wykorzystano system GIS, który pozwolił na usytuowanie przestrzenne miejsc poboru próbek do badań laboratoryjnych. Wykorzystując tę informację, wygenerowano mapy przestrzennego rozkładu badanych elementów (zastosowano metodę interpolacji wagowanej odwrotnej odległości). Przedstawione pilotażowe badania mogą stanowić podstawę do zidentyfikowania szkodliwych działań człowieka i określenia kierunków ich zapobiegania oraz do ustalenia odpowiednich zasad zarządzania wodami.

BACKGROUND Rats lesioned shortly after birth with 6-OHDA (neurotoxin for the central dopaminergic system) have been proposed to be a near-ideal model of severe Parkinson’s disease, because of non-lethality of the procedure, near-total destruction of nigrostriatal dopaminergic fibres and near-total dopamine (DA) denervation of striatum. In such rodent model of Parkinson’s disease increase of serotoninergic system in the brain of adult rats was observed. The aim of presented study was to examine the central serotoninergic system in adult rats simultaneously lesioned with central dopaminergic (using 6-OHDA) and noradrenergic system (using DSP-4). MATERIAL AND METHODS Newborn male Wistar rats were injected on the day 1st and 3rd of life with DSP-4 (neurotoxin for noradrenergic system) 50.0 mg/kg SC, and on the day 3rd with 6-OHDA 134 μg ICV. Separately and concomitantly. In adult animals the level of biogenic amines in the brain was estimated by HPLC/ED technique. RESULTS It was shown that in rats lesioned as neonates with 6-OHDA increase of 5-HT and its metabolite 5-HIAA was observed in the brain of adult rats. Simultaneous lesion of the central dopaminergic and noradrenergic system induce further increase in the level of indole amines in the brain of adult rats. CONCLUSIONS Simultaneous lesion of the central dopaminergic and noradrenergic system of rats as neonates increased activity of the central serotoninergic system which seems to be a substitute of the dopaminergic one.
WSTĘP 6-OHDA, neurotoksyna ośrodkowego układu dopaminergicznego podana szczurzym noworodkom wywołuje trwałe uszkodzenie powyższego układu utrzymujące się przez całe życie zwierzęcia, które uznawane jest za zwierzęcy model choroby Parkinsona. Towarzyszy temu wzrost aktywności ośrodkowego układu serotoninergicznego. Celem niniejszych badań była ocena zmian układu serotoninergicznego u szczurów z równoczesną lezją ośrodkowego układu dopaminergicznego (podaniem 6-OHDA) oraz noradrenergicznego podaniem DSP-4 (neurotoksyny układu noradrenergicznego) . MATERIAŁ I METODY Szczurzym noworodkom samcom szczepu Wistar podano 1-go i 3-go dnia życia DSP-4 50.0 mg/kg SC oraz 3-go dnia życia 6-OHDA 134 μg ICV oddzielnie lub łącznie. U dorosłych zwierząt oznaczono zawartość amin biogennych w mózgu metodą HPLC/ED. WYNIKI Wykazano i potwierdzono, że u dorosłych szczurów z lezją ośrodkowego układu dopaminergicznego wykonaną w okresie noworodkowym dochodzi do wzrostu zawartości 5-HT i 5-HIAA w mózgu dorosłych szczurów. Równoczesna lezja ośrodkowego układu noradrenergicznego wykonana podaniem noworodkom DSP-4 powoduje dalszy wzrost zawartości badanych amin indolowych w mózgu dorosłych szczurów. WNIOSKI: Łączne podanie 6-OHDA i DSP-4 (neurotoksyny układu dopaminergicznego i noradrenergicznego) noworodkom powoduje nasilenie aktywności ośrodkowego układu serotoninergicznego u dorosłych szczurów, który wydaje się zastępować niedoczynny układ dopaminergiczny.

Although polyamines (PA) belong to relatively simple aliphatic substances, their role in life processes of animals and plants is of key importance [1–5]. The group of the most important amines, called biogenic ones includes: Spermine (Spm): H2N(CH2)3NH(CH2)4NH(CH2)3NH2 Spermidine (Spd): H2N(CH2)3NH(CH2)4NH2 Putrescine (Put): H2N(CH2)4NH2. Of secondary importance are homologues of biogenic amines, occurring in lower contents in living organisms [2, 6–8]: 1,3-diaminopropan: H2N(CH2)3NH2 Cadaverine: H2N(CH2)5NH2 Homospermidine: H2N(CH2)4NH(CH2)4NH2 Norspermine (3,3,3-tet): H2N(CH2)3NH(CH2)3NH(CH2)3NH2 Thermospermine: H2N(CH2)3NH(CH2)4NH(CH2)4NH2 Caldopentamine: H2N(CH2)3NH(CH2)3NH(CH2)3NH(CH2)3NH2. The first polyamine discovered in a living organism was tetramine, a spermine crystallised out of sperm in 1678 by Van Leewenkeuk [9]. Putrescine was discovered in the end of the 19th century in microbes and then triamine: spermidine was discovered in the beginning of the 20th century [2]. Later studies have shown that in animal cells spermidine and spermine occur at elevated levels, while in prokaryotes spermidine and putrescine contents are dominant. Putrescine, spermidine, 1,3-diaminopropan, homospermidine, norspermidine, and norspermine have been found in many gramnegative bacteria and algae [7, 10, 11]. Total concentration of PA in living organisms is on the order of millimols, however, the concentration of free polyamines is much lower. A low level of free amines follows from the fact that they are involved in noncovalent interactions with biomolecules occurring in living organisms such as nucleic acids, proteins, or phospholipids. High concentrations of non-bonded polyamines have been detected first of all in young molecules in the process of growth, in particular in rapidly proliferating cancer cells [6, 12]. Elevated levels of free polyamines have been observed, e.g. in breast, colon, lung, prostate, and skin tumours, accompanied by changed levels of enzymes responsible for biosynthesis and catabolism of polyamines. Because of the increased level of free polyamines and a tendency of their interaction with nucleic acids and other bioligands, these compounds have become objects of intense study [1, 13–19]. There is no doubt that the regulation of biosynthesis of polyamines and catabolism is one of the most important pathways in the search strategy for chemoprevention and chemotherapeutic drugs [14, 15, 20–36]. The present state of knowledge of these processes, their significance in biological systems, and their application in medicine are presented in subsequent sections of this chapter.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów wielkości opadów atmosferycznych, natężenia przepływu oraz stężenia azotanów, fosforanów i jonów amonowych w wodach niewielkiego cieku w krajobrazie rolniczym w okolicach Białegostoku. Stwierdzono, że występowanie gwałtownych opadów deszczu może przyczynić się do pogorszenia jakości wód cieku w krajobrazie rolniczym. Stężenie substancji rozpuszczonych rośnie w trakcie zwiększonego natężenia przepływu wody w cieku, a maleje w trakcie niskich stanów wody. Podczas półrocza letniego w 2009 r. wody niewielkiego cieku transportowały około 365 kg ładunku azotanów, 12 kg jonów amonowych i około 5 kg fosforanów. Natomiast w roku 2010 w miesiącach maj – wrzesień, w wodzie cieku odnotowano około 1139 kg ładunku azotanów, 8 kg jonów amonowych i około 19 kg fosforanów. W związku z tym wezbrania wywołane opadami deszczu są okresem intensywnego wymywania biogenów.
Studies on the influence of hydrological and meteorological events to leaching of NO3-, NH4+43-. were carried out in the years 2009 and 2010, in a small agricultural catchment near Bialystok. The results of measurements of weather conditions, rate of flow and chemical composition of the flow were presented in the work. It was found that a sudden rainfall is a critical period for courses in the agricultural landscape. The concentration of dissolved substances increases during the increased flow of water in the watercourse, whereas it decreases during the low water levels. In the year 2009, during the summer of a small stream of water transported about 365 kg load of nitrate, 12 kg of ammonium ions and about 5 kg of phosphate. However, in the year 2010 in the months of May – September, approximately 1139 kg load of nitrate, 8 kg of ammonium ions and about 19 kg of phosphate. Therefore, the flooding caused by pouring rains is a period of intense leaching of NO3-, NH4+43-.
