Opis:
The studies included 2 water bodies in Cracow (Kraków), 6 water bodies in the commune of Zabierzów (Cracow County) and 4 in the commune of Niepołomice (Wieliczka County). The studies were carried out in June 2018 and May 2019. The ways on management of the water bodies were compared. Problems related to revitalization were identified. One of these problems is the preservation of biodiversity. In some cases revitalization reduces biodiversity. This can happen due to the liquidation or limitation of the reed bed zone. Such a situation was observed in the water bodied of Zelków and Karniowice (com. Zabierzów). Both have ornamental functions now. Removal of most of reed does not disturb mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), but makes it impossible to nest for other birds such as moorhen (Galinula chloropus). Moorhens were observed in two former fish ponds in Staniątki (com. Niepołomice) and in the pond of the Kaczeńcowa street. In one of them revitalization caused the diminishing of the water area, but did not change the character of the water body. Bird species were recorded at water bodies.

Opis:
Białowieża Forest (BF) is widely known for its outstanding natural values. The debate about the management/protection model, able to maintain all relevant values of BF on a sustainable basis, has a very long history. Currently, the main role in this debate is played by groups and organizations claiming that the major threat for the biological richness of BF is related to local forest management. In this paper, an attempt is made to verify this thesis. The extensive literature research reveals that vascular plants are one of the most threatened (and best documented) groups of organisms occurring in BF. It was found, for example, that in case of Serratulo−Pinetum (one of the most important woodland community type occurring in BF) the floristic diversity declines at the rate 0.6 species per year. However, similar situation concerns many other groups of species (e.g. lichens) as well. The recession of many species does not take place in the managed part of the BF only. This problem concerns also the areas which, since a long time already, have been subjected to the strict protection, like the ‘Strict Reserve' of the Białowieża National Park (comprising ca. 7% of the BF, under strict protection since ca. 100 years). Several factors and agents responsible for the general deterioration of natural values of BF were identified. Among other things, many authors underline the negative impacts of natural, successional processes taking part in areas which were ‘liberated' from the direct human impacts. Such processes are a direct cause of loss among many herbaceous species, particularly helio− and termophilous plants. Another important reasons for decreasing trends in many important elements of the local biodiversity are: strong reduction of open and semi−open areas (disappearance of the so called ‘cultural landscapes'), climate change, air pollution, deer overabundance, compositional impoverishment of many tree stands, invasive species of plants and animals. In conclusion, there are many factors responsible for decreasing diversity of BF and most of them have nothing to do with the local forest management. To preserve possibly high levels of the natural values of BF for future generations, a wise and complex conservation strategy is needed. As many other similar examples from different places over the world clearly show, the core element of such a strategy should be the principle of active management approach and not the out of action principle of ‘doing nothing'.

Opis:
Changes in the herbaceous layer (vascular plants), taking place between 1959 and 2016 on the permanent study plot in the compartment 319 of the Strict Reserve in the Białowieża National Park are presented. Zaręba [1972] presented phytosociological research carried out in 1959 on the 1.2 ha plot. The author established 10 relevés (size between 100 and 400 m2), in which in total 91 different species of vascular plants were noted. In 2016, the similar study was conducted, using slightly modified methods (the inventory of plants involved the total area of the study plot). The comparison of data recorded during both investigations revealed that the total number of plant species declined from the initial 91 to current 83. During the ca. 60−year long period, 43 plant species disappeared completely and were replaced by 35 new species. In the declining group, almost the half (20) were species important from the point of view of nature conservation, including four Red List species (Arnica montana, Goodyera repens, Lathyrus laevigatus, Trolius europaeus), 10 plant species protected by law, and several other precious species related to rare and declining woodland community types. The obtained results confirm the findings of other authors describing unfavourable changes in the flora of the Białowieża Forest during the past several tens of years. The floristic richness is an important part of the overall biodiversity of Białowieża Forest. It appears that strict protection does not secure the maintenance of this key component. Thus, an attempt to preserve diverse values of Białowieża Forest on a sustainable basis should, first of all, look for a proper balance between strict and active protection. The later can (and should) be integrated within the multifunctional forest management, conducted on the prevailing area of the Białowieża Forest.

There is an urgent need to reverse biodiversity loss as has been identified in a wide range of reports. This short commentary article considers the need for businesses to act on biodiversity and nature loss. In particular, the focus of the article is a statement issued in November 2022 by a number of businesses imploring governments to take action to address biodiversity loss. The businesses are petitioning for government action on the basis that they can only pledge to radically change their business models if there is political certainty in respect of government actions on biodiversity. This commentary considers this November 2022 statement and sets out relevant context for understanding the statement.

Opis:
Badania prowadzono na składowiskach odpadów komunalnych Wołomina – Lipiny Stare i Warszawy - Radiowo. Wyniki badań zawierają głównie szczegółowe dane florystycznofitosocjologiczne i trendy sukcesyjne szaty roślinnej badanych składowisk. Przedstawiono strukturę roślinną tych obiektów. Oceniono ekologiczne przystosowania siedliskowe roślin oraz ich strukturę przestrzenną. Dokonano klasyfikacji taksonomicznej, syntaksonomicznej i ekologicznej zinwentaryzowanej flory. Na terenie obydwu składowisk stwierdzono 215 gatunków roślin naczyniowych, głównie z rodzin złożone, trawy, krzyżowe i motylkowate. Spośród form życiowych przeważały hemikryptofity i terofity. Dominowały zbiorowiska roślinne synantropijnych chwastów segetalnych, nitrofilne zbiorowisko siedlisk ruderalnych i roślinność antropogenicznych łąk.
The research has been carried out on two municipal waste landfills: Lipiny Stare – for the city of Wołomin and Radiowo – for Warsaw. The results contain mainly the detailed floristic and phytosociological data as well as the succession trends of the vegetation cover of two examined landfills. The vegetative structure of both sites has been described. Ecological habitat adaptations of plants and their spatial structure have been evaluated. The inventoried flora has been subjected to taxonomic, syntaxonomic and ecological classification. On the area of both landfills 215 species of vascular plants, mainly from the following families: aster, grasses, cabbage, bean have been found. The prevailing life forms are hemicryptophytes and therophytes. The landfills have been dominated by communities of synantrophic segetal weed, by a nitrophyte community of ruderal habitats as well as by the vegetation of anthropogenic meadows. With the use of phytoindication method by Ellenberg typical features of fresh habitats, humus-mineral with moderate acid and neutral pH and the abundance of microelements in the soil have been shown. The valorization of flora along with the evaluation of succession trends and ecological state of habitats in these environments may in future help determine proper measures aimed at retarding the loss of biodiversity or seeking ecosystem services.

Opis:
The article presents the results of research on the opportunity costs related to establishment of perennial bird protection zones in forests located in two randomly selected forest districts of the Mazowieckie Province: Grójec and Zwoleń (Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Radom). The analysis included calculation of profits lost by forest districts due to termination of timber harvest in bird protection zones and also estimation of work places lost as a result of introduction of new limitations (social costs). The analysis was conducted based on the assumption that currently protected tree stands within protection zones would have been managed in a regular manner, i.e. that pre−commercial and commercial thinning, as well as final cuttings would have taken place and that they would have been a source of income to the examined forest districts. Based on the characteristics of tree stands within protection zones derived from the forest management plans for the forest districts at stake, potential thinning and cutting volumes for a 10−year period as well as potential incomes from timber sale were determined. The calculated timber volume was also used for estimating labour intensity of timber harvesting and skidding. Establishment of perennial bird protection zones generated losses in timber harvest in the amount of about 24.6 thousand m³ during the period of 10 years, which equals to about 1.7% (Grójec) and 2.2% (Zwoleń) of planned timber harvest amounts stated in the forest management plans of the studied forest districts. Total opportunity costs were equal to 3478 thousand PLN during 10 years or 1313 PLN/ha of protection zone annually. Annual opportunity costs calculated per unit of forest area of the forest districts were equal to 11.56 PLN/ha. The estimated loss in work places was 0.85 full−time jobs annually per every 100 ha of perennial bird protection zones. Results show that economic and social costs of nature protection activities concentrate in places of their origin. Those costs are felt the most by owners of affected forests and local communities. Exploration and introduction of instruments allowing mitigation of negative effects resulting from restrictions in forest use are therefore recommended.
