Opis:
An extension of the Rasch model with correlated latent variables is proposed to model correlated binary data within families. The latent variables have the classical correlation structure of Fisher (1918) and the model parameters thus have genetic interpretations. The proposed model is fitted to data using a hybrid of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and the MCEM modification of the EM-algorithm and is illustrated using genotype-phenotype data on a psychological subtest in families where some members are affected by the genetic disorder fragile X. In addition, hypothesis testing and model selection methods based on the Wald statistic are discussed.

Opis:
In the article a new way of determining the number of clusters was proposed focused on data made up of binary variables. An important application aspect is that the data sets on which the new formula was investigated were generated in the way characteristic for the marketing data following the work of Dimitriadou et al. [2002]. The new formula is a modification of the Ratkowsky-Lance index and proved to be better in some respects than this index, which was the best in the mentioned research. The modification proposed is based on measuring the quality of grouping into the predicted number of clusters and running the same index on the twice smaller set of objects comprising dense regions of the original data set.

Opis:
In extremal estimation theory the estimators are local or absolute extremes of functions defined on the cartesian product of the parameter by the sample space. Assuming that these functions converge uniformly, in a convenient stochastic way, to a limit function g, set estimators for the set ∇ of absolute maxima (minima) of g are obtained under the compactness assumption that ∇ is contained in a known compact U. A strongly consistent test is presented for this assumption. Moreover, when the true parameter value $\vec{β₀}^{k}$ is the sole point in ∇, strongly consistent pointwise estimators, ${ \^{\vec{βₙ}}^{k}: n ∈ ℕ }$ for $\vec{β₀}^{k}$ are derived and confidence ellipsoids for $\vec{β₀}^{k}$ centered at $\^{\vec{βₙ}}^{k}$ are obtained, as well as, strongly consistent tests. Lastly an application to binary data is presented.

Opis:
Cluster analysis of binary data is a relatively poorly developed task in comparison with cluster analysis for data measured on stronger scales. For example, at the stage of variable selection one can use many methods arranged for arbitrary measurement scales but the results are usually of poor quality. In practice, the only methods dedicated for variable selection for binary data are the ones proposed by Brusco (2004), Dash et al. (2000) and Talavera (2000). In this paper the efficiency of these methods will be discussed with reference to the marketing type data of Dimitriadou et al. (2002). Moreover, the primary objective is a new proposal of variable selection method based on connecting the filtering of the input set of all variables with grouping of sets of variables similar with respect to similar groupings of objects. The new method is an attempt to link good features of two entirely different approaches to variable selection in cluster analysis, i.e. filtering methods and wrapper methods. The new method of variable selection returns best results when the classical k-means method of objects grouping is slightly modified.

Opis:
This article presents a novel method to the utilize topological representation of a path, thatpath that is created from sequences of images from digital cameras and sensor data from range sensors. A topological representation of the environment is created by leading the robot around the environment during a familiarisation phaseLeading the robot around the environment during a familiarisation phase creates a topological representation of the environment. While moving down the same path, the robot is able to localise itself within the topological representation that is has been previously created. The principal contribution to the state of the art is that, by using a topological representation of the environment, individual 3D data sets acquired from a set of range sensors need not be registered in a single, [Global] Coordinate Reference System. Instead, 3D point clouds for small sections of the environment are indexed to a sequence of multi-sensor views, of images and range data. Such a registration procedure can be useful in the construction of 3D representations of large environments and in the detection of changes that might occur within these environments.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania ośmiu miar podobieństwa genetycznego w analizie danych binarnych, będących matematycznym obrazem żeli elektroforetycznych uzyskiwanych w badaniach molekularnych. Scharakteryzowano miary zgodności (Gowera), Jaccarda, Nei’a i Li (Dice’a), Hamanna, Ochiai, współczynnik Y Yule’a, współczynnik Q Yule’a oraz zero-jedynkowy odpowiednik współczynnika korelacji Pearsona (phi 4-point correlation).
The article presents the possibility of using eight measures of genetic similarity in analysis of binary data which are a mathematical image of the electrophoresis gels obtained in molecular studies. We characterized similarity measures: simple matching (Gower), Jaccard, Nei and Li (Dice), Hamann, Ochiai, Yule Y coefficient, Yule Q coefficient and zero-one equivalent of the Pearson correlation coefficient (phi 4-point correlation). Then, the example of a comparative analysis of 14 varieties of carrots (Daucus carota L.) presents the use of these measures in a multivariate analysis — UPGMA cluster analysis and principal coordinates analysis PCoA. The results of the analysis and the differences between them were presented and discussed. The similarity measures for the molecular data existing in the literature were compared in terms of results compliance obtained from statistical analyses.

Opis:
This paper focuses on hierarchical clustering of categorical data and compares two approaches which can be used for this task. The first one, an extremely common approach, is to perform a binary transformation of the categorical variables into sets of dummy variables and then use the similarity measures suited for binary data. These similarity measures are well examined, and they occur in both commercial and non-commercial software. However, a binary transformation can possibly cause a loss of information in the data or decrease the speed of the computations. The second approach uses similarity measures developed for the categorical data. But these measures are not so well examined as the binary ones and they are not implemented in commercial software. The comparison of these two approaches is performed on generated data sets with categorical variables and the evaluation is done using both the internal and the external evaluation criteria. The purpose of this paper is to show that the binary transformation is not necessary in the process of clustering categorical data since the second approach leads to at least comparably good clustering results as the first approach.

Opis:
The paper describes the algorithms of coding the compressed binary data into trivalent data. The realization of coding compressed binary data into ternary data allows to shorten the time of its transmission. Article contains data coding algorithms of the following strings: 12-bit into 8-trit, 11-bit into 7-trit and 19-bit into 12-trit. The proposed ways of binary-ternary coding were analysed in the context of obtainable shortening of data transmission time, expressed in "real" compression string length ratio. The value of compression ratio was estimated in case of data transmission amounting to 4096, 8192 and 16777216 bits in a binary and proposed binary-ternary coding form. Basing on the data received, we can draw a conclusion, that the use of binary-ternary coding of compressed multimedia data will shorten transmission time by approximately 1/3. This allows for improvement in tele-medical services quality.
