The article explores the term ‘cover’ which is redefined and contraposed with the term ‘bookbinding’ against the background of various research perspectives. Research on the protective elements of documents is divided between bookbinding studies, binding studies (bibliopegy) and cover studies. The conception of the consolidation of research conducted on the covers of various types of documents within cover studies (okladkoznawstwo) is discussed. The history of this field of study, the basic frameworks and the terms which assist the development of this field, as well as postulations for the future and goals to be achieved are also presented.

Kładzie szczególny nacisk na zasługi badaczki w dziedzinie bibliologii.
The article was dedicated to professor Hanna Tadeusiewicz, a scientist from Lodz. Her scientific, didactical and organizational activities are connected with the University of Lodz. Her activities were focused on a particular field which was the workshop of the Dictionary of the Polish Book Labourers where she was a co-organizer and continuator. She also transferred her experience in biographical studies to Kalisz Society of Friends of Sciences. The article discusses the Professor's achievements in the field of biography studies. It puts a particular emphasis on the researcher's merits in the field of book studies.

Opis:
Faustyn Ciecierski, a Vilnius-based Dominican brother, left an interesting manuscript heritage. It includes Pamiętnik (The diary) from his exile to Siberia in the 1790s, Dziennik wizytatora (The journal of a visitor) written in the years 1821–1832 and supplements to the chronicle of the Lithuanian Dominican brothers. The preserved texts constitute a rich source material for historians – especially the researchers into the history of Dominicans – but also to geographers, travelers, and ethnographers as well as linguists and the literati. The heritage is also an interesting testimony of how the text and books functioned in the Dominican monasteries in Lithuania and Belarus. It allows for establishing new facts related to the artistic output; research, collector and bibliophile interests of the monastery members, their achievements in the fields of education, functioning of the library and archival collections in the Dominican monasteries of the Lithuanian province at the end of the 18th and the first three decades of the 19th century.

Kolekcje polskiego dziedzictwa piśmienniczego najpoważniej ucierpiały w trakcie wojen polsko-szwedzkich w XVII i na początku XVIII w. Podczas każdej z trzech kampanii wojennych Szwedzi grabili i wywozili za Bałtyk polskie biblioteki kościelne (klasztorne, katedralne, kapitulne) oraz świeckie, w tym księgozbiory królów polskich (Zygmunta II Augusta i Zygmunta III Wazy). W oliwskim traktacie pokojowym z 1660 r. strona polsko-litewska zadbała o zapis zapewniający zwrot zagarniętych dóbr kultury Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów, ale nie znalazł on praktycznej realizacji. Przed polskimi badaczami stanęło więc zadanie poszukiwania i rejestracji poloników przechowywanych w zbiorach szwedzkich. Działania prowadzone w tym zakresie w XIX, XX i XXI w. pokazały bogactwo, różnorodność i wartość ksiąg należących do polskiego dziedzictwa piśmienniczego, ale objęły one tylko pewną jego część. Istnieje zatem potrzeba dalszych tego rodzaju badań, które pozwolą na bardziej pogłębione poznanie różnych aspektów dziejów kultury książki w Polsce. Studia te będą też istotnym wkładem do rozważań historyczno-bibliologicznych, literaturoznawczych, naukoznawczych, muzykologicznych i innych.
The most serious losses in Polish written heritage occurred during the Polish- -Swedish wars in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. During each of the three war campaigns the Swedes plundered and took out to Sweden the Polish church (monastery, cathedral or capitular) libraries as well as secular ones, including book collections belonging to Polish kings (Sigismund II Augustus and Sigismund III Vasa). Owing to the Polish endeavors, the 1660 Peace of Oliwa contained a clause that ensured the return of the seized Polish cultural assets but it was not implemented in practice. Consequently, the Polish scholars faced the task of seeking and registering the Polish possessions kept in Swedish book collections. The measures undertaken in this area in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries showed the wealth, diversity and value of the books belonging to Polish written heritage but they covered only a part of it. It is therefore necessary to continue research of this kind, which will enable more thorough knowledge of different aspects of the history of book culture in Poland. They will be also a significant source for historical-bibliological, literature-science, science of science, and similar studies.

This paper surveys the Latin-Greek and Greek-Latin bilingual glossaries known through papyrological evidence, both digraphical and non, focusing on their scripts, book formats, and layouts. The systematic comparison between archaeological evidence and western manuscripts bearing similar texts helps to detect conservative and innovative layout strategies. This article mainly focuses on classical and para-literary texts (thematic and non- thematic bilingual glossaries, glossaries of classical authors), without passing under silence the main bilingual Latin-Greek and Greek-Latin Christian texts.

Like other institutions of this type in the old Polish period, the City Council of Lviv, the primary authority in the city, gathered its own book collection. It consisted of books as well as other bibliological documents, initially handwritten, then copied by using the typographic technique. Acquisition of essential books stemmed from the practical needs of the office as they served as reference collection. It included primarily legal books but also historical, astronomical, scientific and others. Apart from purchasing on the book market, books were rewritten on demand of the councilors. The collection also included books that were donated or dedicated to the city. The Council, which fulfilled the legislative, administrative and to some extent also the judiciary function, was also one of the few cultural centers in the city and a cultural patron. It can be assumed that at the end of the 17th century, apart from handwritten archival manuscripts, the library possessed over 100 books. It is hard to estimate the overall number of prints and other bibliological documents that passed through the Council over the time

Rozpoznanie dawnych księgozbiorów to jeden z istotniejszych obszarów badań historycznobibliologicznych. Znaczącą część tego rodzaju kolekcji stanowią biblioteki parafialne. Do podstawowych źródeł w badaniach nad nimi należą akta wizytacyjne, rejestrujące książki będące na stanie parafii. Tego rodzaju dokumentacja wizytacji generalnych z XVIII i początku XIX w. w diecezji chełmskiej, dekanacie chełmskim, pokazuje księgozbiory parafialne w Czułczycach, Kumowie, Olchowcu, Orchówku, Pawłowie, Sawinie, Sosnowicy, Świerżem, Uhrusku i Wereszczynie. Biblioteki te są zróżnicowane zarówno pod względem liczebności, jak i zawartości treściowej. W każdej z nich są obecne książki pro offi cio ecclesiastico, natomiast teksty pro docendo populo występują w parafi ach większych i lepiej uposażonych. Pochodzą one zazwyczaj z darów, stąd też znajdują się wśród nich dzieła niekoniecznie przydatne do pracy duszpasterskiej proboszczów. Są wytworami polskich i zagranicznych warsztatów drukarskich i pochodzą z XVI, XVII i XVIII w.
The identifi cation of old book collections is one of more important areas of historical-bibliological research. A signifi cant portion of such collections are parish libraries (book collections). One of the principal sources in their investigation is visitation records listing the books possessed by a parish. Such documents of general visitations of the 18th and early 19th centuries in the Chełm diocese’s Chełm deanery show the parish book collections in Czułczyce, Kumów, Olchowiec, Orchówek, Pawłów, Sawin, Sosnowica, Świerże, Uhrusk, and Wereszczyn. They are diversifi ed both in terms of the number and content of books. In each of them there are books pro officio ecclesiastico, while the texts pro docendo populo are found in larger and better endowed parishes. The books were usually donated therefore the collections contain works not necessarily useful in the pastoral work of parish priests. They are the products of Polish and foreign print shops and date from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

W artykule skupiono się na przedstawieniu charakterystyki „Roczników Bibliotecznych” i aktualnych problemów pracy redakcyjnej w ostatnim dziewięcioleciu, głównie w związku z ministerialnymi ewaluacjami czasopisma dokonywanymi od 1998 r. oraz aktualną sytuacją dyscypliny naukowej bibliologia i informatologia. W związku z zachodzącymi przemianami w organizacji i kierunkach rozwoju nauki polskiej najważniejszym wyzwaniem dla czasopisma staje się jego umiędzynarodowienie i od realizacji tego postulatu będzie zależeć jego dalszy rozwój.
The article focuses on presenting the characteristics of the “Library Annuals” („Roczniki Biblioteczne”) and the editorial problems in the last nine years, mainly related to the ministerial evaluations of the journal carried out since 1998 and the current situation of the scientific discipline “Bibliology and Information Science”. Regarding the ongoing changes in the organization and development directions of Polish science, the most important challenge for the journal is its internationalization, as its further development shall depend on the implementation of this postulate.

Bibliotheken hatten eine große Bedeutung für die richtige Entwicklung des Klosters: sie waren eine Bedingung für das entsprechende geistige Niveau der Mönche, eine Hilfe bei der Seelsorge und indirekt ein Kulturzeugnis der Gesellschaft, im Rahmen deren sie funktionierten. Gemäß der die Armut anordnenden Klosterregel der Bernhardiner war die Bücherzahl begrenzt. Als Erwerbsmethode waren nur Schenkungen zugelassen (eine Milderung des Grundsatzes erfolgte erst mit der Druckverbreitung). Seit ihrer Entstehungszeit (1468) befassten sich die Bernhardiner aus Radom mit der Seelsorge; nach der Teilung Polens wurde das Kloster zu einem tatkräftigen Zentrum des nationalen Lebens. Der seit dem Anfang des Klosterbestehens gesammelte Bücherbestand wurde für das Ordensstudium und für Ordensbrüder als eine fromme Lektüre bestimmt. Das Bibliothekinventar umfasste 1398 Exemplare. Sein Charakter war dem Charakter des Ordens angemessen: die Mehrheit bildeten theologische Bücher, weiterhin homiletische und philosophische Werke, Bibelexemplare, Bücher aus dem Fachbereich der Kirchengeschichte, des kanonischen und weltlichen Rechts und eine geringe Anzahl von Büchern aus dem mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen und sprachwissenschaftlichen Bereich. In der Radomer Bibliothek befanden sich beinahe aus ganz Europa stammende Bücher. Von 163 Verlagszentren lagen nur 20 in den Grenzen des Polen vor der Teilung. Die Ganzheit der gesammelten Literatur zeugt von einem hohen Niveau der Buchkultur in dem Radomer Konvent in seinem Existenzraum.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie możliwości interdyscyplinarnej współpracy, łączącej specyfikę badań nad kulturą oraz związanych z informacją i komunikacją. Artykuł stanowi także głos w dyskusji związanej ze zmianami klasyfikacji dziedzin nauki i dyscyplin naukowych oraz dyscyplin artystycznych. Zidentyfikowane zostały i omówione wybrane przykłady problemów badawczych funkcjonujących na styku nauk o kulturze oraz bibliologii i informatologii. Należą do nich np. kulturotwórcza funkcja informacji i komunikacji; zmiany artefaktów kultury (książek i dokumentów) w elektronicznym środowisku sieciowym, dzieło i jego relacje z odbiorcami, zarządzanie informacjami o dziełach w procesie komunikacji. Sformułowanych zostało kilka pytań i propozycji badawczych. Artykuł wskazuje na zasadność i korzyści z pogłębienia interdyscyplinarnych badań między naukami o kulturze a bibliologią i informatologią.
The aim of the article is to indicate the possibilities of interdisciplinary cooperation, combining the specifics of research on culture and related to information and communication. The article is also a voice in the discussion related to changes in the classification of fields of science and scientific and artistic disciplines. Selected examples of research problems functioning between culture studies, bibliology and information science have been identified and discussed. These include, for example, the culture-forming function of information and communication; changes in cultural artefacts (books and documents) in a digital network environment; the work and its relationships with recipients, and management of information about works in the communication process. Several research questions and proposals have been formulated. The article indicates the legitimacy and benefits of interdisciplinary research between culture studies and bibliology and information science.

Opis:
Negative assessments of the pre-war book situation were used as justification for some of the changes in this field made in 1945-1956. The reference to a deliberately distorted picture of the book’s situation in the Second Polish Republic intensified during the most revolutionary changes in this respect, the essence of which was bureaucratic planning, etatization and control of the processes of its issuing, production, sale and distribution. The problem that requires further research is the answer to the question of how the arguments used in „blackening” the image of book affairs in the Second Polish Republic could be convincing for those to whom they were directed.

The 550th anniversary of printing in Poland is approaching. The author recalls a series of articles from 1974–1977, long lost in the memory of printers and bibliologists, published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary in “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” (Graphic Arts Bulletin). The articles in the series, entitled From the history of printing, were written by bibliologists, archivists and researchers of the history of crafts and industry. They created a collection of texts worth familiarizing to contemporary students and academic lecturers. “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” was published in a small circulation and was a typical industry magazine. It has been preserved in a few libraries and knowledge of its existence is scarce today.

Opis:
The letter of dedication constitutes an important element of the editorial framework of the old printed book. It was a tool meant to serve its author or publisher to achieve specific goals relevant to them. It was also frequently found in the publications of the Lublin Jesuit Printing House. Content analysis of this type of texts provides us knowledge about the circle of authors and addressees, the relationships between them, the environments from which they come, as well as the reasons for their writing activity. The biographical data included in them is a valuable source allowing for gaining a fuller understanding of the profiles of more or less recognized figures coming from different environments of the former Commonwealth of Poland.
List dedykacyjny stanowi istotny element ramy wydawniczej dawnej książki drukowanej. Był narzędziem, przy pomocy którego jej autor bądź wydawca zamierzali osiągnąć określone, istotne dla nich cele. Często występował również w wydawnictwach lubelskiej Drukarni Jezuickiej. Analiza treściowa tego rodzaju tekstów pozwala poznać grono autorów i adresatów oraz łączące ich relacje, środowiska z których się wywodzili, powody aktywności pisarskiej. Zamieszczane w nich dane biograficzne stanowią cenne źródło do pełniejszego poznania sylwetek mniej lub bardziej znanych postaci wywodzących się z różnych środowisk dawnej Rzeczypospolitej.
