    The article presents a specific ecclesiastical interpretation of the Bible within Orthodox theology and shows some difficulties of this approach from the point of view of Western theological thought. The article discusses the problem of the Orthodox biblical canon and the main difficulties associated with the division between „canonical” and „non-canonical” books. Then the text presents specific elements of Orthodox biblical exegesis, with emphasis on the community of the Church as its primary context. The article also touches the problem of biblical language, and especially importance attached to the text of the Septuagint as well as critical evaluation of certain modern translations of the Bible by Orthodox theologians. The text reveals the elements of the Orthodox approach to the interpretation of the Bible that are valuable for all Christian theological traditions as well as the main theological problems related to it.
    Artykuł przedstawia specyficzną dla teologii prawosławnej kościelną interpretacje Biblii oraz ukazuje trudności tego podejścia teologicznego z punktu widzenia teologii Kościołów i Wspólnot na Zachodzie. Omawiany jest problem kanonu biblijnego w prawosławiu oraz trudności wiążących się z podziałem ksiąg na „kanoniczne” i „niekanoniczne”. Następnie ukazuje się specyficzne elementy egzegezy biblijnej, której podstawowym kontekstem jest wspólnota Kościoła. Wiąże się z tym także problem języka biblijnego, a w jego ramach – znaczenie przypisywane tekstowi Septuaginty oraz krytyczna ocena przez teologów prawosławnych niektórych współczesnych przekładów Biblii. Elementy cenne dla wszystkich chrześcijańskich tradycji oraz główne trudności wysuwane przez teologię zachodnią zestawia zakończenie artykułu.

    The author depicts a holistic model of the biblical theology in the New Testament. This model renders the Person of Jesus in the following three dimensions: historical-eschatological, literary, and canonical. His solution is placed against the backdrop of the current debate that is taking in contemporary biblical studies. The debate concerns the shape of biblical theology, especially its methodology and role in interreligious dialogue. The model of biblical theology under study is based on the holistic conception of Revelation, which may be reduced to the following three theses: Revelation arouses faith, it is taking place in history, it is confirmed in sacred texts, and it has an ecclesial and canonical character. The above assumptions are applied to the holistic model of the biblical theology of the New Testament. This theology is based on the „memory of Jesus” and „memory about Jesus”.

    The Canon hasn’t been constant, but historically varied. Various approach to biblical authorship and different processes led to the fact, that nowadays we can distinguish at least three canons of the Holy Bible. The most important differences concern the Old Testament. Protestant Churches include in the canon all 39 books that belong to the Hebrew Bible. The Roman Catholic Church recognize 46 Old Testament books and the Orthodox Church following the text of the Septuagint (LXX) 50 books. These differences are related to deuterocanonical books, called by Protestant Churches Apocrypha. All Christians agree with the same number of 27 books in the New Testament. However, it is a different arrangement of books in the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Orthodox Church. The existence differences in the biblical canon remain an ecumenical problem in the Christian striving to the unity.
    Kościoły i Wspólnoty chrześcijańskie posiadają odmienną liczbę kanonicznych ksiąg w Piśmie Świętym. Ażeby zrozumieć przyczyny tego podziału, należy spojrzeć, jak kanon biblijny kształtował na przestrzeni wieków, poczynając od Biblii hebrajskiej poprzez formację Starego i Nowego Testamentu Biblii chrześcijańskiej. Najważniejsze różnice dotyczą Starego Testamentu. Wspólnoty protestanckie przyjęły 39 ksiąg, które przynależą do Biblii hebrajskiej. Kościół rzymskokatolicki uznaje za kanoniczne 46 ksiąg Starego Testamentu, a Kościoły prawosławne, idąc za tekstem Septuaginty (LXX) – 50 ksiąg. Te różnice dotyczą deuterokanonicznych ksiąg, określanych przez protestantów jako apokryfy. Wszyscy chrześcijanie zgadzają się co do liczby 27 ksiąg, obecnych w Nowym Testamencie, aczkolwiek w różnej kolejności. Istniejące różnice w kanonie biblijnym pozostają jednym z ekumenicznych problemów w drodze ku jedności chrześcijan.

    Judaism has never recognized Tobit as a canonical book, perhaps because of its roots in the northern Israel. Its reflections in the New Testament are scarce. Ancient Christian witnesses are usually favorable to the canonicity of the book of Tobit. It is present in many ancient biblical manuscripts (a, B, A, more then 30 minuscules). It was quoted by at least 79 authors, by many as Scripture. Some canon lists include it, other ones does not – when they are influenced by the Jewish canon. Some authors who failed to list Tobit in the canon have quoted it as Scripture. Accordingly, arguments for the canonicity prevail. Later ages accepted Tobit as canonical book. Protestants, despite some initial positive interest, have eliminated it. Tobit is canonical in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It contains valuable teachings, especially on family and marriage – it is the only biblical book concentrated on these subjects.

    The article concerns the relationship between the Holy Scripture and the community of faith. The interaction of the community on the Scripture and that of the Scripture on the community are analyzed. First the elements of interaction during the period of formation of various scriptures are described. Already then we can talk about a kind of theological and existential dialogue between Scripture and community. Thanks to this dialogue both the community and the Scripture can develop. The same dialogue continues in the second period too, when the biblical canon is formed. At this stage a special role play so called ‘criteria of canonicity’, which operate within the community. Finally, we can recognize the contemporary modality of this never-ending dialogue in the process of actualization of Bible in the Church. What can be helpful in this contemporary process of actualization is the hermeneutical attitude identified in the previous stages of that dialogue.
    Artykuł dotyczy relacji istniejącej pomiędzy Pismem Świętym a wspólnotą wiary. Analizowane jest wzajemne oddziaływanie wspólnoty na Pismo oraz Pisma na wspólnotę. Najpierw zostają ukazane elementy wzajemnego oddziaływania na etapie formowania się poszczególnych pism. Już wtedy można mówić o swoistym teologicznym i jednocześnie egzystencjalnym „dialogu” rozwijanym w historii wspólnoty wiary, który z jednej strony służy wzrostowi samej wspólnoty, z drugiej natomiast doprowadza do rozwoju literatury biblijnej. Dialog ten kontynuowany jest na następnym etapie, kiedy to formuje się biblijny kanon. Szczególną rolę na tym etapie odgrywają tzw. kryteria kanoniczności funkcjonujące wewnątrz wspólnoty. Współczesnym, w końcu, obliczem tego nieustannego dialogu jest proces aktualizacji słowa Bożego w obecnej sytuacji Kościoła. W aktualizacji tej może okazać się pomocną postawa hermeneutyczna możliwa do zauważenia w dwóch poprzednich etapach wyżej wymienionego dialogu.

    Święty Augustyn jest kluczową postacią Kościoła i kultury zachodniej, którego wpływ widać także w podejściu do Pisma Świętego i Jego interpretacji. Całość swojego spojrzenia na Biblię opisał w dziele De doctrina christiana, które nadal zasługuje na uwagę i na uwzględnienie jej we współczesnych interpretacjach biblijnych. Wśród tematów dotyczących tekstu biblijnego, które podejmuje Augustyn, pierwszorzędne miejsce odgrywają zagadnienia prawdy i autorytetu Septuaginty, kanonu Pism Świętych, natchnienia biblijnego i duchowej interpretacji tekstów biblijnych oraz przymiotów mówcy chrześcijańskiego. Szerokie uwzględnienie tych zagadnień i ich twórcze rozwinięcie, także przy wykorzystaniu tradycji retorycznej zaczerpniętej z myślicieli rzymskich, przede wszystkim Cycerona, przyczyniło się do nawiązania twórczego dialogu Kościoła z kulturą klasyczną, a także stało się modelem do jego kontynuowania w późniejszych epokach. W swoim podejściu do tekstu biblijnego Augustyn pozostaje nadal twórczym inspiratorem, pokazującym żywotność tradycji biblijnej oraz jej znaczenie kulturowe.
    Saint Augustine, whose influence is visible in terms of his approach to the Bible and Its interpretation, is a key figure of the Church and Western culture. He described his entire perspective on the Bible in his work De doctrina christiana, which still deserves attention and a place among the contemporary interpretations of the Bible. Among the topics dealing with the text of the Bible, which Augustine discusses, the most significant are the questions of the truth and authority of the Septuagint, the canon of the Holy Scriptures, biblical inspiration and the spiritual interpretation of biblical texts as well as the qualities of Christian orator. Augustine’s extensive consideration of these issues and his creative development of them, also making use of the rhetorical tradition drawn from Roman thinkers, above all Cicero, helped to establish a creative dialogue between the Church and classical culture becoming a model for its continuation in later eras. In his approach to the biblical text, Augustine remains a creative influencer, demonstrating the vitality of the biblical tradition and its cultural significance.

    The article is a voice in the discussion on the doctrine of Scripture, that is, the theological reflection on the nature, attributes and mission of Scripture. The text shows the close link between the regula fidei and Scripture and, at the same time, the impossibility of identifying the rule of faith with the biblical canon. The rule of faith has played a role in establishing the Christian canon and throughout the Church’s time serves to protect the message of Scripture. The content expressed in the rule of faith is not derived from hidden Tradition, and Tradition has become the internal principle of the New Testament and the regula fidei. The key to Scripture is the faith of the Church, one expression of which is the rule of faith. It allows us to grasp the order of the truths of faith (harmonia veritatum) and their hierarchy (hierarchia veritatum). The original rule of faith was born out of the reception of divine revelation and, together with Scripture, remains at the service of the New Covenant.
    Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji na temat doktryny Pisma Świętego, czyli teologicznej refleksji nad naturą, atrybutami i misją Pisma Świętego. W tekście ukazano bliski związek regula fidei z Pismem Świętym, a zarazem niemożliwość utożsamienia reguły wiary z kanonem biblijnym. Reguła wiary odegrała rolę w ustaleniu chrześcijańskiego kanonu i w całym czasie Kościoła służy ochronie przesłania Pisma Świętego. Treści wyrażone w regule wiary nie pochodzą z ukrytej Tradycji, zaś Tradycja stała się wewnętrzną zasadą Nowego Testamentu i regula fidei. Kluczem do Pisma Świętego jest wiara Kościoła, której jednym z wyrazów jest reguła wiary. Pozwala ona uchwycić porządek prawd wiary (harmonia veritatum) oraz ich hierarchię (hierarchia veritatum). Pierwotna reguła wiary zrodziła się w wyniku recepcji objawienia Bożego i razem z Pismem Świętym pozostaje na służbie Nowego Przymierza.

    The author of the article discusses the most important aspects of the canonical approach in the interpretation of the Bible, which until now has been absent from Polish biblical literature. The presentation consists of four points. Firstly, historical development of canonical criticism is shown, first of all in B. S. Childs’ and J. A. Sanders’ works (1); next the most important methodological postulates of the new approach are presented: negative ones, i.e. criticism of historical-critical methodology (2), and positive ones, i.e. the most important norms of interpretation of biblical texts in the canonical approach (3). The article is concluded with a short discussion of critical and polemic opinions about B. S. Childs’ hermeneutic postulates (4). In the author’s opinion, the discussions led around the canonical approach reflect a much deeper problem that has been pervading Catholic and non-Catholic study of the Bible for years, namely, it makes exegetes realise the tension that exists between (post)positivist postulates of the historical-critical methodology and the inspired character of the biblical texts that are God’s living word. The only answer to the mentioned dichotomy may be a unanimous cooperation of the reason and faith in the domain of biblical studies (cf. John Paul II, the encyclical Fides et ratio, no 94).

    In this article we point out the initial stage of the consolidation of the Christian text of Scripture, the major problems occurring during this process and the final expression of its specific character. The first and the major witness of this process is Justin Martyr thanks to whom we learn about first relations and tensions between Greek and Jewish tradition concerning Scripture. He advocated the universalist approach based on truth, which allowed him to find the way to conciliate those tensions. Furthermore, such an approach allowed him to look favourably on extra-Biblical tradition and recognise it as a preparation for the incarnation of the Eternal Word. Saint Irenaeus in his approach to the text of the Bible appreciated the divine origin and inspiration which decides about its superiority and universalism. By the end of the 3rd century the question of the Christian text of Scripture had been determined, and the emphasis was put rather on the issue of the books, that is the canon.
