Opis:
The issue of microplastics pollution is gaining increasing attention as a global environmental concern. These tiny particles, measuring no more than 5 mm in size and coming in various shapes, can affect all types of marine eco-systems as they are easily consumed by a wide range of marine species. Al-Hoceima Bay, with its semi-enclosed nature and heavily affected anthropized coastline, was chosen as the study area for this research. The main objective was to investigate the presence of various microplastic types in Al-Hoceima Bay by implementing a sampling strategy along the coastline. This comprehensive approach was applied on a local scale within the bay (located in the northwest Mediterranean). Three stations were established in the bay, each located at different levels: the supralittoral, medilittoral and interlittoral. Microplastics were collected from these locations and classified into four categories based on their abundance. Digital microscopy was used to count the plastic particles and they were identified by Fourier transform-attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Results showed a higher presence of microplastics in water at 114 particles/L compared to sediment at 70 particles/L. The classification of samples revealed fibers as the most prevalent form, followed by fragments and films being the least commonly found. The abundance of fibers was found to be higher in water 90%, while in sediment it was 31%, however, fragments and leaves were found in higher concentrations in sediment. Polypropylene and polyethylene were identified as the major polymers used in the microplastics analyzed.

Exclusive landscapes of Podlasie around town Suraz on both banks of river Narew have peculiar status. Local tourists and visitors consider that this place is a real “paradise” for amateurs of water tourism. The infrastructure of water tourism has developed typology and includes different water systems (seas, lakes, rivers, etc.) and a lot of architectural-expansive objects of different types. The aim of this article is an analysis of particular type of maritime complex – harbor for yachts “marina”. Analysis of several examples of “marinas” on the Mediterranean Sea exhibits that today they represent developed complex with complicated inner structure, important urban forming element that subordinates municipal road network and increases artistic expression of the human being environment.

Opis:
Bangladesh, a country that lies on the north shores of the Bay of Bengal, has been blessed with a plethora of natural resources. St. Martin’s Island, the only coral-bearing island in Bangladesh, is undoubtedly regarded as one of the most prized possessions. It is rich in biodiversity, but truly scientific information on it is lacking. In the present investigation, 14 stations adjacent to St. Martin’s Island within the Bay of Bengal were sampled for determining the composition, spatial distribution, species richness, and diversity of pelagic zooplankton. Samples were collected in the pre-monsoon hot season. From the community of zooplankton, 34 species were reported. Most of the species belonged to copepods. Besides, Polychaeta and Cirripedia were also present in the community. The most significant species belonged to Oithona, Canthocalanus, Balanus, Euterpina, and Microsetella. Total zooplankton standing crop varied from 45,000–125,000 ind/m3 and the highest number of species (8) were observed at station 7. Strong variability in the distribution of species was observed in the studied stations. The number of genera collected at each station varied from 4–8. Data on species richness (Df) varied from 1.30–3.04 and that of the Shannon-Wiener Index (H) from 1.33–1.93. The species composition of zooplankton and the species richness and the diversity index of the population was comparable to the other studies carried out in the Central and Western Bay of Bengal.

Opis:
Santos Port is located in Brazilian coast, in an estuarine area inside Santos Bay named Baixada Santista. The currents behavior is forced by tides. The resulting tidal level variability (high tide, mean sea level and low tide) recorded from Santos Dock Company tide gauge (1940 to 2014) shows a consistent increasing trend. The estimation about the magnitude of mean sea level rise (MSLR) in recommendations, guidelines or requirements issued by different countries and agencies from 1990 provide examples of different approaches used around the world in comparison with the local trends obtained for Santos Port. It is concluded that MSLR will have a considerable impact upon the port and adjacent areas, with approximately 1.0 m rise estimated from 1990 to 2100. Baixada Santista is a lowland situated a few meters upper from the sea level and some areas are possible to be submerged in the end of this century. Not only the wetlands of mangroves will be affected, but also the infrastructures, residential zones and the port will face problems. The major SLR impacts upon port operation will be the reduction of freeboard of the quays, flooding of storage yards (and other low storage areas) and of the internal transport tracks or rails. Also the increasing sedimentation in the nautical areas of access channels, turning basins and berths, will induce more maintenance dredging.

Santos’s mangroves are important wetlands located in Brazilian coast, a fishing area inside Santos Bay. The overall healthy mangroves area along the riparian zones influencing the Santos Estuary is around 25.20 km2. The resulting tidal level recorded from Port of Santos tide gauge (from 1940 to 2014), also located in the estuary, shows consistent increasing trend. One healthy mangrove was selected for a previous qualitative biological survey to better understand the characteristics of the habitat to be monitored and evaluated about the possible impacts in the next decades. The mangroves situated a few meters upper from the sea level and some other areas have the risk to be submerged till 2085 which will seriously affect the riparian mangroves biome. Indeed, the mangrove area is confined downward by the low tide level and upward by existing structures, roads, rural and urban areas.

Opis:
The article presents internal transport system and principles of transport organization, in order to indicate that the effectiveness of material flow management in a warehouse depends on the transport strategy used by a manufacturing plant. In the paper different means of transport enabling movement of components and semi-finished products are described. From the perspective of industrial plants, minimizing the number of transport resources and maximizing the use of devices needed to operate the storage process play an important role in effective implementation of logistics processes. At the same time, it is necessary to optimize the transport processes in terms of both time and costs. In the paper the possibility to meet these requirements on the example of a high-bay warehouse is verified, based on simulation of loading and unloading operations. Indicators intended to assess the quality of storage process are presented and used to determine the optimal number of transport resources required to operate the proposed warehouse. The results obtained during simulations are the basis for discussion on the influence of a number of transport resources on operating time of the analyzed warehouse.

Opis:
This work deals with the processes of deglaciation occurring in the region of SSSI No 8 (Site of Special Scientific Interests No 8) located on the western coast of the in the vicinity of Polish H. Arctowski Station over the period 1979-1999. The location of the SSSI is shown in Fig. 1. The basis of this work is comparison between the category of the surface of the area on the charts from 1979 (Furmańczyk & Marsz, 1980) and on the chart from 1986 (Battke, 1990) and the ground measurements carried out in that area in 1999 (Battke & Pudełko, unpubl.). The categories of area were computed on maps with the help of a planimeter: - glaciated areas, - non-glaciated areas (formed by mineral grounds), - sea areas. The accuracy of total measurements of the area is not lower than about 0.2 km2. The results of cartometric measurements are given in Table 1. Over the period 1979-1999 the area of SSSI decreased by 0.86 km2 as an effect of regression of icy cliffs both of Ecology and Baranowski Glaciers and due to accompanied abrasion process. At the same time the glaciated area within the borders of SSSI decreased by 6.93 km2 and the ice free area increased by 6.08 km2. In this way the mean rate of deglaciation of the 21-year period reaches about 0.33 km2 per year. Over the 21-year period the ice free area within the borders of SSSI incresed three times (from 2.98 km2 to 9.06 km2) which results in various consequences on the physico-geographical and biological prosesses in the region of the Admiralty Bay. In the period 1978-1986 the processes of deglaciation observed north of SSSI in the region of Ecology Glacier were faster than in other regions. Over the period 1986-1999 much faster decrease in the glaciated area was noted in the south of the area, in the region of Baranowski Glacier and Tower Glacier spatial changes are presented in Fig. 2. The analysis of reasons having influence on so advance processes of deglaciation indicated to two factors i.e. climatic and hydrological that are both responsible for the process. Over the period 1978-1998 in region of the Admiralty Bay the increase in air temperature during the Antarctic summer (period December - February; trend +0.022°C/year, statistically not significant) was noted. At the same time the period in which ablation was observed (warmer November and March) was longer. The annual sums of precipitation in the same period indicate to the presence of statistically significant negative trend (-5.7 mm/year, p < 0.005). This resulted in the change in the glacier mass balance at the level 2 m. above sea level: from -115 g/cm2/year in 1979 to -146 g/cm2/year in 1998 (Fig. 3). The evaluated trend of change in mass balance is -1.56 g/cm2/year and is not statistically significant. The period during which sea ice cover is not observed also lasts longer and the ice conditions there became visibly milder. This enables the thermal abrasion to last longer and causes more active regression of ice cliffs. On the shore of the Bransfield Strait, between the Admiralty Bay and the Maxwell Bay entrance a deep cove was formed in the ice coast over the period 1985-1988. This resulted in the increase in inclination of the southern slopes of ice forming the Warszawa Ice cap and forced the volume of ice flowing towards the Bransfield Strait to increase. In this way the volume of ice flowing down the Warszawa Ice Cap eastward, to SSSI No. 8 area, decreased. The explanation of reasons responsible for the ice conditions becoming milder can be found in large scale changes in sea surface temperature of the Southern Ocean of the sea area located West of the Antarctic Peninsula (a strong positive trend SST is marked in the period from October to January; in December +0.058°C/year) and in changes in atmospheric circulation. Both these factors, i.e. the increase in the negative values of the ice masses balance and the decrease in the volume of ice flowing down on the SSSI No. 8 area act in the same direction, causing that the deglaciation process in that region occurs in an exceptionally intensive way. Due to such great intensity of the deglaciation processes occurring on the surface of SSSI in that area, this area can be regarded as a unique object of ecological and environmental research.

The Koniecpolski- Radziwiłł Palace in Warsaw
Architecture at the Turn of the 18th Century
Opis:
XVI i pocz. XVII w. Przykład pałacu Radziwiłłów-Koniecpolskich znakomicie ilustruje charakterystyczne w Warszawie zjawisko, gdy wczesnobarokowe wnętrza pałaców próbowano w XVIII w. unowocześnić by spełniały nowe wymogi reprezentacji.
The Koniecpolski-Radziwiłł Palace (today: Presidential Palace) ranks among the most grandiose and prestigious residences in Warsaw. Raised in 1643-1646/56 after the design by Contante Tencalla for Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski, an illustrious knight and outstanding politician, it later belonged to the Lubomirski Princes, and was purchased by Prince Michał Radziwiłł in 1674. It remained this family’s property until 1818. Beginning as of 1648, the Radziwiłłs conducted alterations and adaptations harmonized with utility and stately needs of the residents, employing the most outstanding architects active in Warsaw. Exceptionally preserved sources, compared to other Polish estates, including inventories from: 1681, 1685, 1717, 1721, 1728, 1735, as well invoices and correspondence allow to recreate the history of the building’s transformations, the range of architectural works, and the role played by the contributing architects. The materials have served to reconstruct the altering of the functional arrangement of the interiors, these having been presented in a 2-D format. The grounds for it were found in the plan Pianta del Palazzo di uarsauia [Varsavia] executed by Giovani B. Gisleni before 1655, currently at Milan’s Castello Sforzesco. Tencalla designed a palace with a loggia from the side of the courtyard, a terrace with a grotto from the side of the garden, and a long hall inside, along which stately apartments were located. He modelled himself on early Baroque villas and Rome’s palaces from the 2nd half of the 16th century and early 17th century: the Papal Quirinal Palace, Villa Borghese, and Frascati’s Villa Mondragone. Since the building was not merely to serve recreational purposes, but also stately ones, the Palace was given three storeys: the ground floor, piano nobile and the mezzanine, thus joining the ranks of an open residence of French descent. The fusion of two types of residences: the Italian villa and the French palace yielded the problem of the staircase. Following the villa scheme, Tencalla designed narrow and dark stairs that were not sufficiently sumptuous. Following Tencalla’s death, Gisleni presented the design of a new staircase, this, however, not implemented. The attempts to solve the problem resurfaced in the course of subsequent adaptations and renovations of the Palace. A new stairwell was built only in the mid-18th century as adjacent to the building from the north. In 1689-90, Giuseppe S. Bellotti renovated the Palace for Michał Radziwiłł and his wife Katarzyna née Sobieski. He renovated the stairs leading to the first floor as well as the ground-floor dining room. The Palace’s modernization was conducted on a larger scale in 1693-1701 by Augustyn W. Locci and Carlo Ceroni for the next owner Karol Radziwiłł and Anna née Sanguszko. On that occasion a spacious dining room on the ground floor was built. As a stonemason and hydraulic engineer, Ceroni also supervised works in the garden related to the water devices in the grotto. In order to elevate the stately character of the Palace interiors, another attempt was made to have a new staircase constructed; this was designed respectively by the architect Andrzej J. Jeziernicki (1701-5)  and a laureate of the Academy of Saint Luke Benedykt de Renard (1720-21). Neither were those built. Around that time, out of large rooms on the ground floor, Carlo A. Bay isolated cosy residential apartments for Michał ‘Little Fish’ Radziwiłł. In subsequent years, 1727-28, the focus was on elevating the splendour of the garden. For the purpose, the architect Domenico Cioli was brought from Rome with de Renard’s support; he renovated the grotto, water devices, and the garden pavilions. The reconstructed process of the alterations conducted by illustrious architects in 1684-1735 illustrates the complicated matter that was the use of the Palace raised under the Vasas, and functioning in the era of strong tendencies to manifest sumptuosity, the latter reflected in stately courtyards, French gardens, and most importantly the gala sequence of interiors: the hallway, staircase, and the Grand Hall. The example of the Koniecpolski-Radziwiłł Palace perfectly illustrates the phenomenon typical of Warsaw when modernization of early-Baroque palace interiors was attempted in the 18th century so that they could meet the requirements of sumptuosity. The actual problem consisted in the fact that on the one hand the perimeter walls were almost orthodoxically considered unalternable, while on the other hand efforts were made to bestow a grandiose look and scale upon vestibules, staircases, and Grand Halls. The conflicts between the needs to modernize and technical possibilities forced architects and decision-makers to adopt unusual solutions that were distant from the European schemes of the development of architecture, yet reflected a peculiar mental framework of the clients, as well as socio-economic mechanisms of the development of Warsaw palace architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Opis:
This study describes the phytoplankton community in sheltered euhaline waters of the Basque coast (southeastern Bay of Biscay). Phytoplankton composition, cell size, abundance, biomass and the presence of potentially toxic taxa, together with chlorophyll a, nutrients and hydrographic and optical conditions were measured, from August 2016 to August 2017, in the Mutriku port, with the main aim of assessing the suitability of the phytoplankton community as a food resource for bivalves. The water column in Mutriku showed the typical environmental conditions of Basque marine waters, with no significant nutrient enrichment caused by anthropogenic pressures. Haptophytes represented the greatest contribution to cell abundance (31—47%), and diatoms were the dominant group in terms of biomass (52—79%), which could favour mussel growth due to their high fatty acid content. In addition, the size structure of the phytoplankton community was suitable for mussel ingestion, since the predominant cell size was 2—20 μm. Regarding toxic phytoplankton, the genera that pose a risk for human health and those that affect negatively mussel physiology and survival were considered. Altogether, ten toxic phytoplankton taxa were identified, contributing in less than 5% to the total cell abundance of Mutriku. However, median chlorophyll a concentration was low (0.5 μg L−1), reflecting the oligotrophic conditions of the area. Therefore, even if the composition of the phytoplankton community could be favourable for bivalve aquaculture, biomass values are low compared to other zones of bivalve production.
