Opis:
For decades, the biocenosis of the inner Puck Bay has been undergoing transformation, which probably at the break of the 60ties and 70ties took an ecologically disadvantageous turn. The negative processes which appeared at that time resulted both from eutrophication and anthropopression. Withdrawal of many animal and plant species was observed. The freed ecological niches were taken up by species which formerly appeared in small numbers. Significant changes of the biocenosis structure took place. In this paper, basing on the formula for the half-period of change, the rate of change of selected components of the ecological formations is calculated. Obtained results may allow to evaluate the processes disrupting the structure of biocenosis under the influence of long term eutrophication and anthropopression.

Opis:
Migratory smelt (Osmerus eperlanus eperlanus L.) may be perceived as a valuable indicative organism in monitoring the current environmental status and in assessment of a potential risk caused by selenium pollution. The aim of the study was to compare the selenium content in the European smelt from the Bay of Pomerania, Gdansk, and the Curonian Lagoon. The experimental material consisted of smelt samples (muscle) caught in the bays of Gdansk and Pomerania and the Curonian Lagoon (estuaries of the three largest rivers in the Baltic Sea basin: the Oder, the Vistula and the Neman). A total of 133 smelt were examined (Pomerania Bay n = 67; Gdansk Bay n = 35; Curonian Lagoon n = 31). Selenium concentrations were determined spectrofluorometrically. The data were analyzed statistically using one-way analysis of variance, calculated in Statistica PL software. The region of fish collection significantly affected the content of selenium in the examined smelts. The highest content of selenium was observed in smelt caught in the Bay of Gdansk (0.236 μg g-1 w.w.), then in smelt from the Pomeranian Bay (0.165 μg g-1 w.w.), and the lowest in smelt obtained in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania) (0.104 μg g-1 w.w.). The low concentrations of selenium recorded in the smelt show that there is a deficiency of this element, especially in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania). Geochemically, Poland and Lithuania are selenium deficient areas. Migratory smelt may serve as indicative organisms of environmental levels of selenium.

Opis:
In the article, the new method of modelling of Rod Vortex Generators (RVGs) was proposed. RVGs are inclined rods, mounted in boundary layer used to flow control. RVGs were intensively investigated in Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery in Gdansk, Poland. The research results indicate high potential of RVGs to flow control in wide range of Mach numbers (Mach 0.3-1.45) in the main flow. Due to the flow structure details generated by RVG, it is required to create fine grids in the vicinity of RVGs, which increase the computational cost. In order to overcome this difficulty and reduce computational cost the new numerical models of RVGs are proposed, which use the modification of BAY model. Using BAY model it is not needed to resolve the shape of RVG in detail and it is possible to use orthogonal meshes. The BAY model was originally proposed to predict flows behind thin-plate vortex generators. This model works by adding momentum source term to Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in ANSYS Fluent. The BAY model spatial vectors orientation was modified and some simplifications were performed. The model was calibrated and simulations were carried out for the single rod. The results and effectiveness of modified BAY model were compared with wind-tunnel experiment results and grid-resolved model.

Within a small (2.5 x 2.5 km) test field, located in the eastern part of the Pomeranian Bay, the geological structure was sq investigated in detail using seismoacoustic profiling and coring. In the cores, mineral grain size and micro- and macrofauna were analysed. Basing on seismoacoustic records, three main seismostratigraphic units were distinguished. The lowest unit is built of sand and muddy sand. Higher up lies the unit of sandy mud, in some places - of clay. Fauna assemblages indicate cold climate conditions, and clearly point to an existence of lacustrine reservoir of oligotrophic character. Analysis of cores shows that sedimentation began in bog conditions. The lakes in the area existed till the Atlantic period, when due to sea transgression they became filled with sandy sediments. The third unit is built mainly of fine sand, locally medium sand, even with addition of gravel. Basing on the presence of marine fauna, this unit is classified as marine sand.

A total of 5 sampling points along Vlora Bay beaches (Radhimë, Plazhi i Ri, Akademia e Marinës, Plazhi i Vjetër, Kabinat, Nartë) were selected and monitored during the period of January 2014 to August 2014. Seawater samples were evaluated for faecal coliforms (FC) and faecal streptococci (FS). Akademia e Marinës beach had the highest incidence of faecal indicators (FC and FS), 100% of samples respectively, followed by Plazhi i Ri (27.3% and 45.5%), mainly during summer. Whereas, Plazhi i Vjetër, Kabinat, Radhima and Narta beaches were in compliance with the Guidelines. High concentration of faecal indicators, at some of these beaches, especially during summer, emphasizes the necessity of periodical monitoring of these areas in order to prevent a health risk for bathers.

Basing on investigations of bottom suiface sediments of the outer Puck Bay (1995, 1999) and the inner Puck Bay (1987, 199 I, 1996), their condition and the absolute quality was determined in accordance with the adopted classification { 3]. Carried out at the same time investigations of the condition and composition of phyto- and zoobenclws allowed determining the relationships between the biotic and abiotic components of the Puck Bay bottom. In the paper, results of correlation analysis are presented. They indicate strong relationships between selected systems of components. These results show also that loading of the sediments with organic matter has a significant influence on the properties of the environment and on the biocenoses of the investigated water area.

Opis:
In summer 2004, Department of Marine and Environmental Geology of VSEGEI carried out investigations of the Neva Bay bottom surface east of the St. Petersburg Flood Protective Dam using a side-scan sonar system. The main aim of this experimental work was the creation of a new “factographical” map of bottom sediments and different types of technogenic objects. State geological surveys of the Neva Bay bottom were carried out by VSEGEI in 1987–1989. Besides, geoenvironmental investigations were conducted here in 1993–1995 and 2000–2002. As a result, a set of maps of bottom sediments based on hundreds of sampling stations (both cores and grab-sampler) were compiled. Side-scan investigations of 2004 allowed more exact recognition of the bottom sediment distribution. Furthermore, in some places new data permit to suppose that the sedimentary conditions have changed here during the last decades as a result of high technogenic load, including Flood Protective Dam influence. In summer 2004 there were a joint expedition of the VSEGEI and the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). Altogether 10 sampling stations from the mud accumulation areas were sampled with a use of Niemisto corer. Cores were sliced in 1 cm samples and analyzed in chemistry laboratory of GTK (Finland) – gamma spectrometry for 137Cs, ICP-AES and ICP-MS, whereupon important results about heavy metals concentration and distribution were received.

Opis:
The species composition and size-structure of the phytoplankton community in the Boka Kotorska Bay (SE Adriatic Sea) were analysed with respect to abundance and carbon biomass, together with the physico-chemical parameters, with the aim of evaluating the predefined oligo-mesotrophic status of this transitional water ecosystem. Three stations located in the inner part of the Bay were sampled with seasonal frequency in 2008/2009. Picophytoplankton cells were counted using flow cytometry; nanophytoplankton and microphytoplankton were identified and counted by light microscopy. The relative importance of the picoplankton in the Bay, in terms of both abundance and biomass, during all the investigated seasons emphasized their significance in the phytoplankton community. Picocyanobacteria (Synechococcus) constituted a significant part of the summer assemblages with regard to both abundance (up to 3.38 × 108 cells L−1) and carbon biomass (up to 73% of total phytoplankton carbon). The contribution of the nanophytoplankton was found to be generally low (<20% of the total phytoplankton carbon) in all seasons, and was dominated by autotrophic/mixotrophic flagellates. Species with a preference towards nutrient-enriched conditions, like the diatom Skeletonema marinoi, dominated the microphytoplankton fraction. S. marinoi was the most abundant in spring/winter (up to 2.86×106 cells L−1) above the halocline (making a 96% contribution to the microphytoplankton). The potentially toxin-producing diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima was recorded at abundances greater than 105 cells L−1, together with Thalassionema frauenfeldii, as well as the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum micans and the potentially harmful P. minimum. The higher values of phytoplankton biomass and the dominance of phytoplankton species or groups with preferences for nutrient-enriched conditions appear to be consistent with the oligo-mesotrophic status of this specific ecosystem.

The issue of microplastics pollution is gaining increasing attention as a global environmental concern. These tiny particles, measuring no more than 5 mm in size and coming in various shapes, can affect all types of marine eco-systems as they are easily consumed by a wide range of marine species. Al-Hoceima Bay, with its semi-enclosed nature and heavily affected anthropized coastline, was chosen as the study area for this research. The main objective was to investigate the presence of various microplastic types in Al-Hoceima Bay by implementing a sampling strategy along the coastline. This comprehensive approach was applied on a local scale within the bay (located in the northwest Mediterranean). Three stations were established in the bay, each located at different levels: the supralittoral, medilittoral and interlittoral. Microplastics were collected from these locations and classified into four categories based on their abundance. Digital microscopy was used to count the plastic particles and they were identified by Fourier transform-attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Results showed a higher presence of microplastics in water at 114 particles/L compared to sediment at 70 particles/L. The classification of samples revealed fibers as the most prevalent form, followed by fragments and films being the least commonly found. The abundance of fibers was found to be higher in water 90%, while in sediment it was 31%, however, fragments and leaves were found in higher concentrations in sediment. Polypropylene and polyethylene were identified as the major polymers used in the microplastics analyzed.

Opis:
This study reports on the sedimentary characteristics of Lake Khuvsgul which is located at the southern end of the Baikal Rift System within the continental interior of East Eurasia. With an elevation of 1645 m a.s.l., it has a climate that is mainly controlled by the Siberian-Mongolian high pressure system and the westerly wind systems from the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Khuvsgul, Mongolia’s second largest lake by surface area (2760 km2), is the country’s deepest fresh water lake with a bottom that is only 262 m a.s.l. Fed by 96 rivers and streams, it is drained by the Eg River which, after joining the Selenge River, fl ows into Lake Baikal. Analysis of a 12.3 m core from Borsog Bay near the eastern shore of the lake indicates a sedimentation rate of about 0.08 cm/a. It is believed that this relatively high sedimentation rate is due to the large sedimentary input from River Borsog and the variability of the turbidity currents at depths shallower than 9 m. It further suggests that the large sedimentation rate may be correlated with the annual and seasonal variations in the dominant westerly wind system over the Siberian Plateau. Such variations have resulted in a lowering of lake level and impacted the rate of erosion within the river’s catchment area and therefore the sediment input to the lake. Because this is a preliminary report, further research into the sedimentary dynamics within Lake Khuvsgul and the role played in those dynamics by the climatic variability over Mongolia and Central Asia is planned.

The purpose of this research conducted between October 2018 and April 2019 was to determine the effect of the first and second transitional season on the nutrient profile in Ciletuh Bay. The data used in this research and directly taken from the research site were seawater quality parameters, analysis of granulometry sample and analysis of nutrient profile, while all data processing was conducted in a laboratory. The method used in this study was purposive sampling. The results of this research indicated that the nutrient profile in the first transitional season is higher than the second transition season. This is due to the introduction of organic matter into the waters. From this research it can be concluded that the first transitional season affects the concentration of nutrient in Ciletuh Bay.

The paper concerns investigations of regional variability of the wave climate in the Pomeranian Bay. Analysis is based on the wave measurements taken during a period of four months and numerical wave model WAM4 results. The calculations covered period of 3 months in 1997 (Oct., Nov., Dec.) and two years: 1998,1999. Analysis of wave modelling results shows that wave fields are not homogeneous in the whole area. The gradual increase (up to 50%) of yearly mean values of selected wave parameters can be observed going from the south-westerly of the Bay to north-easterly direction. Directional distribution of significant wave height is determined by wind climate and shape of the basin and prevails in easterly, south-easterly, south-westerly directions.

The article presents internal transport system and principles of transport organization, in order to indicate that the effectiveness of material flow management in a warehouse depends on the transport strategy used by a manufacturing plant. In the paper different means of transport enabling movement of components and semi-finished products are described. From the perspective of industrial plants, minimizing the number of transport resources and maximizing the use of devices needed to operate the storage process play an important role in effective implementation of logistics processes. At the same time, it is necessary to optimize the transport processes in terms of both time and costs. In the paper the possibility to meet these requirements on the example of a high-bay warehouse is verified, based on simulation of loading and unloading operations. Indicators intended to assess the quality of storage process are presented and used to determine the optimal number of transport resources required to operate the proposed warehouse. The results obtained during simulations are the basis for discussion on the influence of a number of transport resources on operating time of the analyzed warehouse.

The Bay of Bengal is the largest bay in the world that forms the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean, bordered mostly by the Eastern Coast of India, southern coast of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to the west and Myanmar and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (part of India) to the east. The regional management of the Bay of Bengal water area is performed by regional organisations such as ASEAN, SAARC, BIMSTEC and IORA unifying Bay’s coastal states. Nevertheless, differences in political and economic interests of the states, separate conflicts between states and consequences of the pandemic not only challenged the integrity of the regional management but also led to rising insecurity of the Bay of Bengal and fears to navigate in that area. In this article, the authors, in a more detailed way, will disclose existing regional management systems, concerns related to maritime security and give recommendations on how to increase efficiency in collective management of maritime security issues and how the concept of due diligence may play the vital role in the regulation of not only maritime security aspects but also aspects of environmental protection and potential transition to the blue economy.

Opis:
Wyniki badań wskazują, że zmianami temperatury powietrza, temperatury powierzchni morza i koncentracji lodów morskich w rejonie wschodniej części Arktyki Kanadyjskiej (Zatoka Baffina, Ziemia Baffina, Wyspa Devon, Półwysep Bothia i Basen Foxe'a) steruje NAO. Kierunki zmian wymienionych elementów są odwrotne do fazy NAO (ujemna faza NAO – wzrost temperatury powietrza i morza, spadek koncentracji lodów, dodatnia faza NAO – odwrotnie).
This work describes changes in air temperature in the region of Subarctic and Canadian Arctic and in the sea area adjacent to them and is an attempt to define the influence of atmospheric circulation on these changes. The analysis covered the air temperature, sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration. The analyzed period lasted from 1982-2009. Positive trends in air temperature were noted over the whole area. The results of the research indicate that NAO is responsible for the changes in the air temperature, sea surface temperature and the concentration of sea ice in the region of the eastern part of the Canadian Arctic (the Baffin Bay, Baffin Island, Devon Island, the Bothnia Peninsula and Foxe Basin). The direction of changes is opposite to the phase of NAO (negative phase of NAO – increase in sea and air temperatures, decrease in ice concentration, positive phase of NAO – just the other way round). The strongest impact of NAO on air temperature is observed in winter. The influence of winter NAO on sea surface temperature and on ice concentration is asynchronous (the strongest in summer) and employs action of an indirect factor, i.e. the thickness of ice. West of Cambridge Bay – Baker Lake line the main factor responsible for the changes in air temperature is teleconnection pattern of PNA (Pacific-North American). Its impact is the strongest at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter (October-December). Most clearly the influence of PNA is marked in the region of the Canadian Subarctic (southern and central party of Northwest Territories), its influence becomes weaker northwards and north-eastward. Changeability of PNA has little influence on sea surface temperature of the Beaufort Sea and on its ice concentration. Positive phases of PNA are associated with the increase in air temperature. The observed increase in annual air temperature over the entire area of the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic must be accompanied by negative phase of NAO in the same year and by positive phase of PNA. If in a given year there are the same phases of both oscillations, following the signs of these oscillations, positive anomalies in air temperature are observed in the Subarctic region and in the Canadian Arctic and negative anomalies in some parts. As in the analyzed period of NAO variability a negative trend is marked and in PNA a weak positive trend is noted, it may be assumed that the observed increase in air temperature over the Subarctic region and in the Canadian Arctic results, to a great extent, from long term changes in conditions of circulation.
