Opis:
The study was carried out in 2002 and 2003. The experimental material was basil plants cultivated in the field for a bunch harvest, using for plant covering perforated foil and polypropylene unwoven cloth. The control object was basil grown without covering. The covers tested in the experiment had a significant influence on the yielding of basil cultivated for a bunch harvest. The highest yield was obtained when polypropylene unwoven cloth was used. Basil plants grown under polypropylene unwoven cloth were the highest (18.2 cm), had the biggest diameter (13.4 cm) and the largest leaves (5.9 cm long and 3.3 cm wide). Using covers (perforated foil and polypropylene unwoven cloth) caused a decrease of dry matter content in the yield of basil, in comparison with the plants grown without covering. The covers used in the study caused a decrease of nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium in the basil yield, but did not decrease phosphorus and sodium content.
Doświadczenie przeprowadzono w latach 2001-2003 w Katedrze Warzywnictwa Akademii Rolniczej w Szczecinie. Materiał badawczy stanowiła bazylia uprawiana na zbiór pęczkowy z zastosowaniem osłon z folii perforowanej i włókniny polipropylenowej. Badane w doświadczeniu osłony miały istotny wpływ na plonowanie bazylii. Największy plon otrzymano z zastosowaniem osłony z włókniny polipropylenowej. Bazylia uprawiana pod włókniną polipropylenową były najwyższa (18,2 cm), miała największą średnicę (13,4 cm) oraz największe liście (długości 5,9 cm i szerokości 3,3 cm). Zastosowane osłony (folia perforowana i włóknina polipropylenowa) wpłynęły na zmniejszenie zawartości suchej masy w plonie bazylii w porównaniu z jej uprawą bez osłon. Stosowane w doświadczeniu osłony wpłynęły na zmniejszenie w plonie bazylii zawartości azotu, potasu wapnia i magnezu, natomiast nie miały wpływu na zawartość fosforu i sodu w roślinach.

After the sudden death of Basil, his first wife took over the thron of Trebizonde. Her reign soon came to the end. She was “foreign” to the Trapezuntine aristocracy. Definitively Irene of Trebizond, the second wife of Basil, triumphed when her son Alexius III had ascended the throne of Empire of Trebizond.

Opis:
The proposed topic is extremely timely in an era of debate over the possibility of allowing divorced persons who have remarried to receive Holy Communion. In this regard it is worth examining the causes and consequences, which are still present in the canon of the Catholic Church, with a different understanding of the attribute of marital indissolubility. While in fact the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church agree on the teaching of the sacraments, including the teaching of the sacrament of marriage and its attribute of indissolubility, in practice the understanding of indissolubility results in a different use of canon in both Churches. The reason is primarily a different interpretation of the so-called Matthew clause. Hence, in the East, St. Basil the Great in some way allowed the practice of penance for divorced people who remarried. While his teaching on marital indissolubility is clear, the same cannot be said for the explanation of the discipline he recognizes. Interpretation of the individual principles described by St. Basil, causes many difficulties. In the West, the most significant Church Father in this matter is St. Augustine, he synthesized the teaching on marriage while explaining the doctrine and practice to be followed. He did not omit the attribute of indissolubility and defined the relationship between a man and a woman before the end of the previous marriage as adultery. As a consequence of the differences in understanding of the attribute of marital indissolubility, there are clear restrictions in today’s canonical discipline in the Catholic Church, which must be observed in the case of some pastoral service towards an Orthodox person, whether in the case of a mixed marriage or for any other reason.

Opis:
During the famous famine of 369 Basil, a renown priest of Caesarea, was not hesitant to take up leadership and to successfully face a severe food shortage, which posed a major threat to the inhabitants of Cappadocia. His friend, Gregory of Nazianzus, was careful to point out that Basil’s involvement in the crisis took up a form of gathering the poor, distribution of food to the needy and, far and foremost, alleviation of spiritual suffering caused by hunger of words. In dealing with the wealthy landowners who used to hide grain in their granaries and with the merchants profiteering from this food shortage all he could do was to rely on his rhetorical persuasiveness. In a few sermons (Homilies 6, 8, 9, and also, probably, 7) he issued an appeal to the rich notables to make their grain available to the poor. The vast range of his arguments involved several issues like, to mention only a few, a dignity of human person, private ownership, proper attitude to wealth as such, importance of traditional system of honors connected with the conception of civic euergetism and pagan philanthropy. Basil was eager to make his audience realize the fact that wealth was not given for pleasure but should be reasonably managed and serve as a tool to help the poor and to diminish the scale of social injustice. He also argued that the care of the poor was deeply rooted in the Christian teaching (commandment of love) and practice (observed especially in the first Christian community) and was the best way to gain eternal reward.

Opis:
Although St. Basil did not live 50 years, the topic of the old age appears in his works quite often. On the other hand, it is clear that Basil does not discuss this issue in one particular work or in the longer argumentation. The fragmentary statements about old age can be found in almost all his works, but most of them can be found in the correspondence of Basil. In this paper we present the most important ad the most interesting aspect of teaching of Basil the Great. As these certificates show that the bishop of Caesarea looked at the old age maturely, rationally estimated passage of time, which very often makes a man different. He experienced it, for example as a spiritual and physical suffering, which often were connected with his person. He saw a lot of aspect of the old age, especially its advantages – spiritual maturity and wisdom. What is more, he pointed also to passage of time, which leads a man to eternity, which should be prepared to, regardless how old he is. In his opinion fear is not seen opinions of St. Basil present really Christian way of thinking, well-balanced and calm.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) regulates many critical processes of plants. The effect of sodium hydrogen sulfide as H 2S agent was investigated in basil plants under cadmium stress. A completely randomized design with three different concentrations (0, 50 and 100 μM) of CdCl2 and two levels of NaHS (0 and 100 μM) was used in this study. Cadmium exposure reduced growth parameters and relative water content. Cd also caused a significant increase in ion leakage and higher oxidative stress in terms of lipid peroxidation and H 2O 2 production. Although exogenous NaHS used in non-stressed control plants negatively affected growth and physiological parameters, it improved the root/shoot length ratio and fresh weight in basil plants under Cd 50 μM exposure. Moreover, NaHS alleviated deleterious effects of cadmium on ion leakage, relative water content and photosynthetic pigments of leaves. The activity of antioxidant enzymes like catalase, peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase were also enhanced by NaHS in plants under moderate cadmium stress. Our results show that NaHS 50 μM ameliorates growth retardation induced by cadmium 50 μM stress in basil plants, probably through regulating physiological parameters such as photosynthetic pigments content, relative water content and the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Language is the basic tool for the teacher's work. Meanwhile, pedagogues often forget that this tool becomes obsolete, just like the knowledge they pass on in class. The article is an attempt to draw attention to the need to learn the language spoken by young people. Thanks to this, teachers can often understand the student's statement, and thus – take appropriate intervention. It is necessary to know everyday expressions, know what the abbreviations used in text messages mean, and above all be sensitive to phrases that may indicate pathological behaviour. The article contains a few examples of words whose meaning is worth knowing when working with young people.

Red basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) cv. Red Rubin was cultivated in model pot experiment in the soil amended by arsenic, cadmium and lead solutions in stepwise concentrations representing the soil concentration levels of former mining area in the vicinity of Příbram, Czech Republic. The element levels added to the soil reached up to 40 mg Cd, 100 mg As, and 2000 mg Pb per kg of soil. Moreover, essential macro-and microelements as well as cyanidine contents were investigated to assess their potential interactions with the risk elements. The extractable element portions in soils determined at the end of vegetation period differed according to the individual elements. Whereas the plant-available (extractable with 0.11M CH3COOH) content of Cd represented 70-100% of the added Cd, the mobile portion of Pb did not exceed 1%. The risk element content in plants reflected the increasing element contents in soil. The dominant element portions remained in plant roots indicating the limited translocation ability of risk elements to the aboveground biomass of this plant species. Although the risk element contents in amended plants significantly increased, no visible symptoms of phytotoxicity occurred. However, the effect of enhanced risk element contents on the essential element uptake was assessed. Considering inter-element relationships, elevated sulphur levels were seen in amended plants, indicating its possible role of phytochelatin synthesis in the plants. Moreover, the molybdenum contents in plant biomass dropped down with increasing risk element uptake by plants confirming As-Mo and Cd-Mo antagonism. The increasing content of cyanidine in the plant biomass confirmed possible role of anthocyanins in detoxification mechanism of risk element contaminated plants and suggested the importance of anthocyanin pigments for risk element tolerance of plants growing in contaminated areas.

Opis:
We can distinguish two essential approaches to the issue of monastic poverty in the teaching of St Basil: a critical anti-Eustachian and a positive, unpolemical attitude. He pointed out his critical approach to main points of the doctrine introduced by Eustachius i.e.: the refusal of marriage and condemnation of the possession of any property, even in order to use it for charity purposes. It is clearly visible in his late writings – Letters, Moralia. St. Basile proved, in these writings, the necessity of the use of properties, from a biblical and ecclesiastical point of view because – for example to pay taxes. The positive approach which accepted voluntary poverty is clearly visible in his Moralia, Greater Asketikon and Lesser Asketikon. The bishop of Caesarea considered voluntary poverty as the mean to achieve a state of the unity of Christian life. The only Christian purpose is to give glory to the Lord and salvation.

The political morality that Plato and Aristotle supported was governed by various anthropological and social determinants, which means that they focused on man understood as a citizen and interpreted through the dialectic as well as through the prospects of the city’s happiness, since for both of them man was a social animal. The political ethics of Plato and Aristotle does not endanger the political community with political bankruptcy. This political morality does not start from intransigent principles to reach a compromise that has already been surpassed by the previous negative dynamics. The Byzantine political morality oscillates between the individual and the totality. It is not governed by individualism but rather by communitarianism, which entails that it confirms the dynamics of unity within the city. The Byzantine political morals is imbued with an anticipation of the political crisis, it seeks to identify any negative developments and strives to avoid the political marginalization of the citizens who are likely to rebel against any autocratic government. The Byzantine political morality is, thus, not an idle and selfish political introversion, concerned merely with political crises, conflict scenarios and conspiracy theories, as it strives to come up with various solutions that should guarantee political balance.

Opis:
There are some references to the famous Delphic inscription „Know thyself” (gnothi sauton) in the Hexaemeron (IX 6; VI 1) and the Homilia in illud: Attende tibi ipsi by St. Basil of Caesarea. In the Homilia in illud: Attende tibi ipsi St. Basil accepts the Philo’s and Clement of Alexandria’s opinion that the Septuagint proseche seauto („Attend to yourself”) and the Hellenie gnothi sauton („Know thyself”) are the same. According to St. Basil, influenced by the Alcibiades I, „yourself” means „a soul” as an opposite to a body and its environment. St. Basil interprets the Delphic maxim in the following meanings: (1) „Turn to yourself”, (2) „Know God from yourself”, (3) „Take care of your soul”, (4) „Control yourself”, and (5) „Remember you are a human”. His interpretation is influenced by the many philosophical writings, especially the Platonie dialogues (the Charmides, the Alcibiades I), the Stromata of Clement of Alexandria, and the Origen’s In Canticum canticorum.

Opis:
The article is an examination of Basil’s teaching about faith and its importance in his large correspondence. The bishop of Caesarea describes faith as the acceptance of the Gospel, the conviction of the truth of the message, a confession of one’s belief in the Trinity. The Cappadocian emphasizes faith as an acceptance and conviction of the truth which comes from the inspired Scriptures and the teaching of the Nicaea. The confession of faith formulated by the Council of Nicaea constituted the essence of the truth of the Christian faith. The bishop of Caesarea indicates the importance of the baptismal formula for the formulation of the true Christian doctrine. During the baptismal rite the baptizand makes their confession of faith and is thus admitted into the community of the faithful. Basil’s teaching of initiation into the Christian mistery is dominated by his use of the word mean the apostolic doctrines which constitute what the „Great Church” taught and believed. The Cappadocian points to the danger of false and heretical assemblies (parasynagogues) and of the false teachers of the faith. It is presented as a way of knowing God. There is also one important emphasis in Basil’s thought which especially characterizes his view of the human steps in the concrete realization of it: the knowledge of God and faith in Him is manifested in love to God and one’s neighbor.
