Opis:
In microbiology, computer methods are applied in the analysis and recognition of laboratory-acquired microscopic images concerning, for example, bacterial cells or other microorganisms. Proper recognition of the species and genera of bacteria is a key stage in the microbiological diagnostics process, because it allows a quick start of the appropriate therapy. The original method proposed in the paper concerns the automatic recognition of selected species and genera of bacteria presented in digital images. The classification was made on the basis of the analysis of the physical characteristics of bacterial cells using the product of classifier confidence weights. The end result of the classification process is the classification list, sorted in descending order according to the weights of the classifiers. In addition to the correct classification, a list of other possible results of the analysis is obtained. The method thus allows not only the classification, but also an analysis of the confidence level of the selection made. The proposed method can be used to recognize not only bacterial cells, but also other microorganisms, for example, fungi that exhibit similar morphological characteristics. In addition, the use of the method does not require the application of specialized computer equipment, which widens the scope of applications regardless of the laboratory IT infrastructure, not only in microbiological diagnostics, but also in other diagnostic laboratories.

Opis:
Plates functionalized with an Escherichia coll binding aptamer and a reagent based on gold nanoparticles were used for the detection of bacterial cells. Bacteria suspended in samples were caught by specific aptamers immobilized on a plastic plate whereas the gold nanoparticle reagent is an indicator reagent for visualization of the test result. Changes in colour of the gold nanoparticle reagent caused by gold nanoparticle agglomeration were observed with the naked eye. The test was designed for the detection of Escherichia coli in water suspensions.

Opis:
Flavonoids, polyphenolic compounds present in many food products, affect growth of different bacterial species when tested as purified or synthetic substances. They can also influence gene expression in human cells, like fibroblasts. Here, we asked if soy isoflavone extracts, commonly used in many products sold as anti-menopausal dietary supplements, influence bacterial growth similarly to a synthetic isoflavone, genistein. Four commercially available products were tested in amounts corresponding to genistein concentrations causing inhibition of growth of Vibrio harveyi (a model bacterium sensitive to this isoflavone) and Escherichia coli (a model bacterium resistant to genistein). Differential effects of various extracts on V. harveyi and E. coli growth, from stimulation, to no changes, to inhibition, were observed. Moreover, contrary to genistein, the tested extracts caused a decrease (to different extent) in viability of human dermal fibroblasts. These results indicate that effects of various soy isoflavone extracts on bacterial growth and viability of human cells are different, despite similar declared composition of the commercially available products.
