Opis:
The research was conducted around reclaimed landfill, located on the suburb of Otwock, around 25 km south-west of Warsaw. The objective of this study was to identify the chemical composition of groundwater and to determine the landfill impact on the chemical composition of groundwater downgrading from the landfill. Otwock landfill is located in very permeable area, where leachate quickly seeps into ground-water and plays a key role in controlling redox condition (and chemical composition of groundwater) of the downgradient area. High concentrations of HCO3-,Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Fetot. as well as DOC in groundwater downgradient from the landfill (in comparison to background water) likely indicate that groundwater quality is being significantly affected by leachate percolation. Currently, the load of contamination is released from landfill periodically and slowly moves (70 m/y) in the aquifer along the flow direction. The effect of distance of the piezometer from the pollution source was also investigated. As expected, water from the nearest piezometer to the land-fill showed the highest values of contaminant (water temperature, specific electrical conductivity, sodium, iron, chlorides (except for summer and autumn analysis) and calcium (except for winter analysis)). Chemical status of groundwater downgradient from the landfill is poor.

Opis:
This paper examines the changes in stocks of water in clay soils against precipitation and changes in the groundwater table. The study was conducted during the summer period (May-September) in 2001 and 2002. According to the Kaczorowska` s criteria (1962) the year 2001 was very wet, and the 2002 – average. In 2001, ground water table was at a depth of 0 to 190 cm below ground surface level, and in 2002, from 50 cm to 150 cm below the surface. Water storages in the root zone (0-35 cm) developed in 2001 at the level of 100 to 125 mm, in 2002, from 88 mm to 122 mm.

Opis:
The study area-the Bystrzyca River catchment extends over about 1500 kmexp.2 of the Sudety Mts foreland [SW Poland]. The chemical composition of groundwater collected in 2004 from 57 sampling wells within the Holocene-Pliocene and Miocene aquifers throughout the Bystrzyca River catchment was analyzed. The results served to study the hydrogoechemical background and quality of groundwater. Groundwater of both aquifers were usually dominated by HCO3- (with the background of 47–400 mg/l and 110-260 mg/l for Holocene-Pliocene and Miocene aquifers, respectively, SO4exp. 2- [9–200 mg/l; 6-82 mg/l], Caexp.2+[20-101 mg/l; 32-72 mg/l] and Mgexp.2+[4.8-20 mg/l; 7.2-16 mg/l] ions, but the quality of groundwater from theMiocene aquifer was relatively better. The similar chemical composition of the both aquifer’s groundwater shows that the Miocene aquifer was reinforced by water seepage from the upper Holocene-Pliocene aquifer. Thus, the water from the Holocene-Pliocene aquifer could have been the source of anthropogenic pollutions to the Miocene aquifer. However, groundwater from the Miocene aquifer contain more Fetot and Mnexp.2+ ions, attributed to geogenic influences. Concentration of toxic ions like NOexp.2- and probably anthropogenic NOexp.3- and Clexp.- ions in the studied groundwaters was low, not exceeding the limits for potable water [as defined by Polish standards; Official Journal. No. 203, item1718].

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to assess differentiation in the total content of Cu, Zn and Mn under the influence of water erosion. The present author investigated parent material, eroded soils and delluvial sediments of a small arable-forest catchment of the moraine zone in West Pomerania. The average content of heavy metals in the parent rock (boulder light loam) were assumed as geochemical backgrounds of Cu, Zn and Mn. It was found out that erosion process caused differentiation in heavy metals. Zinc was the most mobile in this transportation; Mn was not sensitive to it. Delluvial sediments from arable (drainage) depressions had a clearly lower content of Cu and Zn than the parent material. It was also noted that Cu and Zn content in the forest area was lower than in the arable area of a similar relief and soil composition. Mn content was always higher in the arable soils. Soil-forming processes influenced differentiation of heavy metals in the vertical soil profile. The humus and Bt horizons (accumulation of silicate clay) were enriched with heavy metals. A decrease of heavy metal content was noticed in the eluvial horizon (Eet - outwash of silicate clay). The humus horizon of the investigated soil had, a natural (not increased) content of Cu, Zn and Mn.
