Opis:
Excessive physical activity is one of the main risk factors in the formation of degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs. Recreational and elite sport also represents a repeated increased physical load, and based on the type of sport, a more intense and sometimes less intense action of direct forces on the intervertebral discs. On the other hand, sport and training is in general regarded as beneficial for our health. Many doctors also regards sport as a form of prevention against back injuries. The authors analyze numerous sporting activities with different types of direct forces acting on the spine, with the goal to inform on realistic scientific facts regarding the impact of these activities on the degeneration of the intervertebral disc. They inform about the available facts, which confirm the positive effects of a certain type of sport load on the degeneration of the intervertebral disc, and its correlation with the clinically manifested back pain.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of load on the net moment response at the L5/S1 joint during simulated slip events. Six young individuals were instructed to take one step with a handheld load. Sudden floor movement was randomly introduced to simulate unexpected slips. Different loads conditions (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% of body weight) were introduced at random. Three-dimensional net moments at the L5/S1 joint were computed via downward inverse dynamic model. Peak joint moment generated at 30% load level was found to be significantly higher compared to no-load condition. No peak moment differences were found among no-load, 10% or 20% load levels. Additionally, the findings from this study indicated a flexiondominant net L5/S1 joint moment pattern during motion phase associated with slip-induced falls.

Opis:
This study investigated the ability of the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation (RNLE) to measure the risk of low back injury as verified by employee health outcomes. In addition, several basic risk factors and combinations of risk factors presumed related to low back disorders were explored. The RNLE was modified to allow analysis of one-handed and two-handed, asymmetric lifts. Predictive performance was not changed. Simplifying the RNLE by removing several variables did not significantly reduce the RNLE’s predictive performance. These modifications to the RNLE show promise for increasing both the usability and utility of the RNLE.

Opis:
Twenty-one risk factors affecting laborers in manual materials handling tasks were analyzed to determine what, if any, statistically significant relationships existed between the factors and the emergence of occupational back injury. The statistically significant risk factors (p ≤.05) in the univariate analysis were determined to be weight lifted per hour (work intensity), trunk twists per hour, weight lifted per day, frequency of lift, trunk motions per hour, and trunk flexions per hour, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.28-2.88. In addition, self-reported discomfort in the neck, middle back, knees, and lower back was associated with the outcome of back injury (p ≤.05, OR 1.75-2.66). In the multivariate analysis, the statistically significant risk factors (p ≤.05) were weight lifted per hour (work intensity), average weight of lift, and number of trunk twists per hour, with ORs of 1.74-4.98.

Opis:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of gender and existing, recurrent low back pain (rLBP) on lower extremity and trunk mechanics, as well as neuromuscular control, during a lift task. Design: A multivariate design was used to examine the effects of gender and group on biomechanical and neuromuscular control variables in randomized symmetric and asymmetric lifting. Methods: 68 Males and females with rLBP and healthy performed symmetric and asymmetric weighted box lifting trials to a 1 meter height table. Results: Lifting style was different between gender and between the rLBP versus healthy groups during a 1m box lifting. A significant two-way interaction effect between gender and group was observed for multifidus muscle activity and knee rotation in asymmetric lifting. Several gender and group main effects were observed in pelvis obliquity, trunk flexion and side flexion, knee abduction angles in symmetric lifting; and in pelvis obliquity and rotation, trunk flexion and side flexion, hip abduction, knee abduction angles, external oblique and internal oblique muscles activity in asymmetric lifting. Conclusions: Females and individuals with rLBP appear to use different lifting styles that emphasize movement at the pelvis accompanied by poor kinematic control features at the hip, trunk and knee. Clinicians should be mindful of these changes when developing prevention and rehabilitation programs aimed at improving trunk control in preparation for lifting tasks during domestic and occupational activities.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to prevent occupational musculoskeletal injuries. Our workers stacked boxes of ceramics weighing 10–27 kg, making low back pain common in our enterprise. In all the stacking stations, recommended weight limits (RWL) were separately calculated using the revised National Institute for Occupational Health lifting equation. Since the boxes weighed significantly more than the RWL, we developed a new ergonomic design that completely changed the stacking process. The load put on the workers’ waist vertebrae in the new and the old stacking methods was compared to evaluate the success of the new ergonomic design, using Newton’s third law of motion. Thanks to the new ergonomic design, the load on the workers’ vertebrae decreased by 80%. Due to its simple technology and its very low cost compared to robots, the new ergonomic design can be commonly used in enterprises with repeated and constraining stacking.

Opis:
The goal of this study was to quantify the effect of experience and handrail presence on trunk muscle activities, rotational spinal stiffness and postural stability of construction workers. We evaluated spinal stability, and objective and subjective postural stability in 4 expert and 4 novice construction workers who were performing a manual task in a standing position on a scaffold, with and without a safety handrail. Center of pressure was computed using measurements taken with insole pressure transducers. Muscle activity was monitored usingsurface electrodes placed on 8 trunk muscles that predicted active trunk rotational stiffness. Standard deviations of the center of pressure, back muscle activity and spinal stiffness were greater in novices and in the absence of a handrail. We infer that the risk of a fall due to postural and spinal instability may be greater with a lower level of experience and in the absence of a safety handrail.

Opis:
Introduction. Military operations are associated with high health risks, and loss of life. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of military missions on quality of life, health, family and social situation of Polish veterans. An additional aim was to examine how often they suffered from injuries, as well as their subjective evaluation of physiotherapy after returning to the country. Material and methods. The study involved 60 people: in the study group there were 30 soldiers - veterans (28 men and 2 women) and in control group there were 30 soldiers, who had not participated in missions (28 men and 2 women). The age of the group of veterans was 22 to 58 years, mean age 33.45 ± 11.04 years. The age of the control group was 43 to 21 years, mean 25.10 ± 4.41 years. The test was performed with the use of authors’ own surveys and with two questionnaires: Rolland-Morris and WHOQOL Bref. Results. The reasons that motivated the soldiers to go on a mission was mainly their desire to improve their financial situation and to take the opportunity to gain experience. Injuries were experienced by 10 soldiers (33%) soldiers. Soldiers’ physical activity, fitness, quality of life and health deteriorated after mission. Return to the home country was related to changes in the psychosocial environment. Conclusions. 1. Participation in military missions contributed to negative changes in behavior of soldiers and in relationships with relatives and strangers. 2. Despite these, the veterans evaluated their the quality of life and health as well.
Materiał i metody: W badaniach wzięło udział 60 osób: w grupie badanej 30 żołnierzy - weteranów (28 mężczyzn i 2 kobiety) i 30 żołnierzy nieuczestniczących w misjach, stanowiących grupę kontrolną (28 mężczyzn i 2 kobiety).
