In the paper authors continue the development of a model of dynamic power management in energy-aware computer networks, where two criteria: energy consumption and the quality of service are considered. This approach is appropriate when the routing problem with fixed demands is inadmissible. The formulation introducing edge indices is modified and tests on problems of different sizes are performed.

Opis:
The availability of cheap and widely applicable person identification techniques is essential due to a wide-spread usage of online services. The dynamics of typing is characteristic to particular users, and users are hardly able to mimic the dynamics of typing of others. State-of-the-art solutions for person identification from the dynamics of typing are based on machine learning. The presence of hubs, i.e., few instances that appear as nearest neighbours of surprisingly many other instances, have been observed in various domains recently and hubness-aware machine learning approaches have been shown to work well in those domains. However, hubness has not been studied in the context of person identification yet, and hubnessaware techniques have not been applied to this task. In this paper, we examine hubness in typing data and propose to use ECkNN, a recent hubness-aware regression technique together with dynamic time warping for person identification. We collected time-series data describing the dynamics of typing and used it to evaluate our approach. Experimental results show that hubness-aware techniques outperform state-of-the-art time-series classifiers.

Rules are a common symbolic model of knowledge. Rule-based systems share roots in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. In the former, they are mostly used in cognitive architectures; in the latter, they are developed in several domains including knowledge engineering and machine learning. This paper aims to give an overview of these issues with the focus on the current research perspective of artificial intelligence. Moreover, in this setting we discuss our results in the design of rule-based systems and their applications in context-aware and business intelligence systems.

Currently the Internet of Things environment suffer from a variety of unique problems such as low throughput, inadequate support for mobility and notcompatible (and often close) application environments. However, characteristic of physical environment often provides opportunities to address these problems. This paper explores concepts of enriching the WNS environment with context-based information. By context we consider all data available in sensors environment, not only data processed by them. Currently this data are not utilized by sensors, but we think that they can improve overall functionality of the sensor network. We also discuss the practical challenges facing the integration of such an approach into the sensor application stack.

Opis:
The paper presents a practical approach to calculating intra-domain paths within a domain of a content-aware network (CAN) that uses source routing. This approach was used in the prototype CAN constructed as a part of the Future Internet Engineering project outcome. The calculated paths must satisfy demands for capacity (capacity for a single connection and for aggregate connections using the given path are considered distinctly) and for a number of path-additive measures like delay, loss ratio. We state a suitable variant of QoS-aware unsplittable multicommodity ow problem and present the solving algorithm. The algorithm answers to the needs of its immediate application in the constructed system: a quick return within a short and fairly predictable time, simplicity and modiability, good behavior in the absence of a feasible solution (returning approximately-feasible solutions, showing how to modify demands to retain feasibility). On the other hand, a certain level of overdimensioning of the network is explored, unlike in a typical optimization algorithm. The algorithm is a mixture of: (i) shortest path techniques, (ii) simplified reference-level multicriteria techniques and parametric analysis applied to aggregate the QoS criteria (iii) penalty and mutation techniques to handle the common constraints. Numerical experiments assessing various aspects of the algorithm behavior are given.

Contemporary maritime shipping is subject to a large number of constraints given by tight shipping schedules and very low margins. Additionally, problematic areas with increased security needs dynamically changing in time, combined with seasonal oceanographic and meteorological conditions pose a challenging voyage planning problem. In this work we present a risk-aware voyage planner taking into account spatio-temporal environmental conditions. The planner is based on a graph-based search algorithm A* . We discretize the required area into a graph, we store various layers of information into the edges of the graph (such as risk and weather conditions) in a form of numeric weights and we define a bi-objective planning problem with a tradeoff between security and duration of the voyage. The nature of the algorithm guarantees a complete and optimal solution in a form of an optimized voyage with respect to the criterion function composed of the two weighted components, i.e, duration and security of the voyage. We demonstrate the approach on our area of interest: Indian Ocean. We use NATO piracy activity risk surface as the risk layer and we compute all transit voyages between relevant routing points in the area. Finally, thanks to the discretization of the problem, we are able to integrate corridors imposed by the shipping authorities and evaluate additional what-if scenarios with extended corridor systems. The resulting planner is exposed to the public using a web service with an easy interface requiring start time of the voyage and the origin and the destination point of voyage. Combined with an expressive visualization, this tool demonstrates the capabilities of the proposed solution.

She discusses in detail the intuitive app generator created by eLearning Studios (Coventry, Great Britain), 2 (of 11) training apps designed by Teatr Grodzki (Bielsko-Biala, Poland), and the e-learning modules supplementing the apps, with theoretical foundation laid by Eldeberry AB (Hägersten, Sweden). The author shows how personalized IT tools facilitate education and improve job performance of people with disabilities, thus helping them achieve personal and professional success. The partners were, among others, motivated by the fact that European societies and job markets are gradually becoming more inclusive towards people with disabilities. The tools were successfully tested with over 300 learners in Denmark, Hungary, and Poland, and assessed by the project partners and vocational education and training specialists. The research proved that the tools, translated into national languages and forming a bank of educational resources to be followed or adapted by interested users, may inspire teachers, managers, and supervisors, and facilitate vocational training and other types of e-learning.

The paper is an attempt to investigate the intriguing convergence of the inner logic of three aesthetic categories that emerge from the experience of finitude of existence in diverse cultural environments: the awareness of the tragic in Western cultures, the Japanese category of mono no aware, expressing the painful beauty of things in their impermanence, and a famous Greco-Roman notion of lacrimae rerum (tears of things). All three – despite the deep disparities between the cultural traditions they represent – prove to be the ‘places’ of paradox, of powerful synchronic tension resulting from the ‘clash’ of contradictory forces, transforming one’s perception of the universum. It seems that it is the paradoxical nature of the experiences labelled by these categories (as confirmed by neuroscience) that allows us to confront our finitude with the aid of aesthetic tools.

Data security and energy aware communication are key aspects in design of modern ad hoc networks. In this paper we investigate issues associated with the development of secure IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) - a special type of ad hoc networks. We focus on energy aware security architectures and protocols for use in WSNs. To give the motivation behind energy efficient secure networks, first, the security requirements of wireless sensor networks are presented and the relationships between network security and network lifetime limited by often insufficient resources of network nodes are explained. Second, a short literature survey of energy aware security solutions for use in WSNs is presented.

Opis:
Obtaining the optimal query execution plan requires a selectivity estimation. The selectivity value allows to predict the size of a query result. This lets choose the best method of query execution. There are many selectivity obtaining methods that are based on different types of estimators of attribute values distribution (commonly they are based on histograms). The adaptive method, proposed in this paper, uses either attribute values distribution or range query condition boundaries one. The new type of histogram - the Query-Conditional-Aware V-optimal one (QCA-V-optimal) - is proposed as a non-parametric estimator of a probability density function of attribute values distribution. This histogram also takes into account information about already processed queries. This information is represented by the 1-dimensional Query Condition Distribution histogram (HQCD) which is an estimator of the include function PI which is also introduced in this paper. PI describes so-called regions of user interest, i.e. it shows how often regions of attribute values domain were used by processed queries. Advantages of the proposed method based on QCA-V-optimal are presented. Conducted experiments reveal small values of a mean relative selectivity estimation error comparing to the error values obtained by methods based on the relevant classical V-optimal histogram and Equi-height one.

Opis:
The demand for ubiquitous and efficient information delivery is increasing rapidly, as the majority of access to professional data, information and knowledge is increasingly relying on the use of technology. Mobile workers become more efficient, if equipped with access means similarly powerful to stationary workplaces. All types of work exhibiting inherently nomadic characteristics are even more affected by these developments. Healthcare personnel in a clinical environment are definitely one of the typical examples, where the access of information is vital and bound to location. Additionally the information needs to be processed in very short periods of time. For this purpose it is of great advantage to deploy advanced information visualization technologies in order to communicate larger amounts of data in a shorter period of time. In this work, we present an IT platform, which emerged from applications in the cultural heritage domain, that can be used to deliver context-aware services and advanced visualization of information to medical personnel in a clinical environment. The location combined with usage profiles for each member of the stuff are used to make the decision about the type and amount of information as well as the visualization type delivered to the handheld devices. Along with the description of the platform and its components, two application examples/medical use cases are presented.

The paper constitutes a psychodynamic analysis of the language as used in the medical expertise today. Particularly, low psycholinguistic and stylistic awareness on the part of medicine practitioners is discussed, which contributes to the communication intention violation, ultimately to communication failure between the doctor and the patient being two participants in the commu- nication dyad. This preliminary discussion points to the necessity of more conscious linguistic choices on the part of people working in the health care sector, who can model their patients ‘in the direction of health’, and start prevention programs based on psycholinguistic modeling via language used in communication with the patient.

Context-aware applications running in intelligent spaces are one of the most dynamically developed group of applications. Their model called CAA (Context-Aware Applications) on the one hand allows to express their interactivity with regard to cooperation with an intelligent space and their users. On the other hand it shows their iterative nature that allows to analyze context-aware part of the application according to iterative algorithms. Applications defined in that way can be executed directly be the intelligent space. However, to do that the space needs to be enhanced with a special engine delivering particular mechanisms. The article describes such engine called Parallel CAA, its architecture and implementation. The implementation creates a CAA execution environment.
Z drugiej strony obrazuje on iteracyjny charakter ich wykonywania, umożliwiający rozpatrywanie kontekstowej części aplikacji (tzn. działania dotyczącego dostosowywania do sytuacji w przestrzeni) w kategoriach algorytmów iteracyjnych. Parallel CAA) będącą podstawą do utworzenia takiego silnika, wynikającą z niego właściwą architekturę oraz jej implementację, stanowiącą środowisko wykonywania aplikacji IAI.

Routing in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) has found significant attention because of its unique features such as lack of energy constraints and high-speed vehicles applications. Besides, since these networks are highly dynamic, design process of routing algorithms suitable for an urban environment is extremely challenging. Appropriate algorithms could be opportunistic routing (OR) where traffic transmission is performed using the store-carry-forward mechanism. An efficient OR mechanism, called Location and Direction Aware Opportunistic Routing (LDAOR), is proposed in this paper. It is based on the best neighbor node selection by using vehicles positions, vehicles directions, and prioritization of messages from buffers, based on contact histories and positions of neighbor nodes to destination. In LDAOR, when multiple nodes make contact with a carrier node, the closest neighbor node to destination is selected as the best forwarder. However, when only one node makes contact with the carrier node, the message is delivered to it if it moves toward the destination. Using the ONE simulator, the obtained performance evaluation results show that the LDAOR operates better than conventional OR algorithms. The LDAOR not only increases delivery rate, but also reduces network overhead, traffic loss, and number of aborted messages.

This paper proposes two different health-aware economic predictive control strategies that aim at minimizing the damage of components in a pasteurization plant. The damage is assessed with a rainflow-counting algorithm that allows estimating the components' fatigue. By using the results obtained from this algorithm, a simplified model that characterizes the health of the system is developed and integrated into the predictive controller. The overall control objective is modified by adding an extra criterion that takes into account the accumulated damage. The first strategy is a single-layer predictive controller with an integral action to eliminate the steady-state error that appears when adding the extra criterion. In order to achieve the best minimal accumulated damage and operational costs, the single-layer approach is improved with a multi-layer control scheme, where the solution of the dynamic optimization problem is obtained from the model in two different time scales. Finally, to achieve the advisable trade-off between minimal accumulated damage and operational costs, both control strategies are compared in simulation over a utility-scale pasteurization plant.
