Opis:
Many flights operate in different countries and aviation communication takes place mainly between non-native speakers of English. Unfortunately, real life professional discourse seems to go beyond its prescribed standardization. Moreover, it still happens that many languages are used simultaneously on the frequency. This paper investigates the matter of multilingual usefulness in global aviation communication. The author presents the current state of affairs and discusses whether or not operational personnel need to know how to speak multiple languages or if it is better to speak only prescribed Aeronautical English. Empirically based research is also presented. What matters in a given context and especially in a particular non-standard or emergency situation is the language used for professional communication, but in the aviation context it is not only the communication between parties involved that really counts. All the users of airspace should understand words uttered by their colleagues present at frequency in order to be able to correct wrong instructions or react in case of distress.

Opis:
The author presents various research tasks of a new scientific discipline – avialinguistics, called and described by herself earlier (see A.P. Borowska 2017a). This new branch of linguistics deals with various types of aviation texts. Aviation discourse is a specific variety of specialist discourse as common features with other specialist varieties are found to be marginal. The needs of civil aviation increase proportionally to research needs and improving its aspects including aviation communication. The article presents the subject and aims of avialinguistics in order to present its various research tasks with reference to current aviation needs and taking into account the variety of aviation polilects. Aeronautical discourse has been selected as an example for scientific discussion.

Opis:
The importance of communication in the cockpit is discussed, and the discourse analysis of a sample authentic in-cockpit communication during flight operation is presented. The analysis results indicate that specific language use variables are correlated with individual performance at the point of flight performance and individual communicative intentions. Also, language use was found to vary as a function of crew position, out-of-cockpit addressee and level of workload during the flight. Language use for the procedure purpose was tightly linked to cockpit panel readings, whereas language use for personal interaction was of ‘over a cup of tea talk’ pattern. These observations suggested a specific hybridness of the cockpit language discourse which might need to be further checked by an alternative research method of communication analysis., e.g., a content-coding method.

Opis:
“Emergency equipment checked. Cabin sweep done. Mobile phones off mode.” is a standard routine used by the cabin crew of one of the Polish airlines after checking the emergency equipment before each rotation. But what is cabin sweep and why isn't the Polish equivalent of the word used? At first glance, it is clear that communication between cabin crew members is quite specific and governed by its rights. The paper, which will be based on ethnographic studies (participating observation) carried out on board of Enter Air aircrafts between June 2017 and October 2019, will present selected aspects of specialised communication between flight attendants. However, the main focus will be on the terminology used by cabin crew in conversations with each other. One of the hallmarks is the use of many English words. This should not come as a surprise, because English is the language of aviation. The terminology used by cabin crew is intended to transfer as much content in as less words as possible. Also numerous abbreviations and neologisms will be presented as well as those terms that are successfully used in everyday situations, but gain a whole new meaning in the language of cabin crew members.

Opis:
Artykuł porusza problemy konwersji technologii w wybranych dziedzinach. Przekształcenia procesów dotyczą zastosowanych narzędzi, urządzeń bądź zmian procesowych m.in. w medycynie, produkcji, usługach i zarządzaniu. Autor podejmuje próbę analizy zalet i wad, korzyści i potencjalnych zagrożeń towarzyszących swoistemu skokowi cywilizacyjnemu związanemu z transformacją wybranych dziedzin aktywności gospodarczej.
The article present problems of technology conversion in chosen areas. The transformation process related to applied tools, devices or law suits changes in medicine, production, services and management among others. The author undertakes the attempt of evolution performance of applied techniques in transportation, consisting in use of platforms steered e.g. in intertermial movement of airports, using of remotely piloted aircraft systems, the reorientation of the air traffic movement b remotely controled ATC towers. Elaborated substitutes allow to initiate new technical solutions. They encounter however on mental barriers and the lack of the adaptation of legal controls. Technological modernization in many cases meets with the barriers of the social receipt. The mental breakthrough happened in some uses unknowingly, when the applied modernization is promoted by recepient. In different fields such as the air traffic, attempt of the transformation of traditional methods wake the resistance of the environment. The author undertakes the attempt of the analysis of amenity and weakness, advantage and potential threats acompanying special civilization jump connected with the transformation of the chosen areas of the economic activity.

Opis:
Due to the rarity of female pilots, aviation communication is typically conducted in a single-gender environment. The role of gender in interactions during inflight emergencies has not yet been adequately explored. This single case analysis uses a qualitative approach based on conversation analytic transcripts to investigate how gender may be relevant either explicitly or implicitly in radio transmissions between flight crew and Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel, as well as internal ATC phone interactions as participants work to handle an inflight emergency. This incident involved a female pilot and a male copilot, thus providing a naturally occurring rare event to explore the potential relevance of gender. The analysis shows that explicit references to gender are limited to occasional asymmetrical use of gendered address terms and gendered pronouns. Participants also used interactional formulations that—while not explicitly gendered—have been associated in previous research with gender differences in interaction, for example, the use of indirect forms of requests or complaints, actions that imply inferences about the emotional state of participants, or possible confusion over the identity of the pilot given the transitions between male and female sounding voices speaking on behalf of the plane. The findings are discussed in terms of implications for how gender differences can impact aviation communication during emergency incidents.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to analyse a terminological mechanism applied in choosing English words and phrases which are the basis for professional communication between airport aircraft mechanics of various nationalities. Correctly applied terminology facilitates successful communication and can contribute to reducing incidents arising from errors made during aircraft pre-flight preparation. Aircraft mechanics communicate not only by means of specialised terms and acronyms, but also by AECMA/ASD1 standardised Simplified Technical English for technical documentation purposes. Due to frequent text comprehension problems, common specific words have been selected according to the rule “one word – one meaning.” Furthermore, English grammar has been simplified for successful international communication between aircraft mechanics. Thus, a specific communication tool has been created and is currently in global use, which indirectly contributes to flight safety. The author presents common trends applied in the process of terms selection in the working environment. She also emphasises the necessity of using clear and concise terminology in aviation communication. The author’s observations can support aircraft mechanics’ language training, and terminological as well as translation work. The article familiarises the reader with some key concepts of aircraft maintenance terminology.

Opis:
At present, air travel is on the increase. People spend more and more time at airports and on airplanes, which have become one of the fastest and most important means of transport in today’s world. Although English is the language of aviation, one can communicate at airports and on planes also in (almost) every other language. In this paper attention is directed to the Dutch language of aviation, which has not yet been the subject of linguistic research. Is it possible to speak, as it is the case with Aviation English, about Aviation Dutch? The main issue raised in this paper is an attempt to give a definition of Aviation Dutch and to present its specific characteristics that distinguish it from other languages for special purposes.
