    The paper presents a methodology for estimating reserves of available groundwater resources for use, inter alia, for the purpose of fracturing unconventional gas reservoirs. The assessment is based on the balance ofgroundwater available resources and water abstraction with the amount allowed by water intakes permits. The balance included a variant of the assessment of reserves of groundwater available resources under conditions of several years of drought, i.e. guaranteed resources. Estimation of reserves of groundwater resources was applied to water-management regions and to smaller units - the balance catchments, designated in the regions in order to determine the available surface water resources. The reserve of groundwater resourcesfor established and guaranteed resources was estimatedfor the selected water-management region - the Wietcisa river catchment. This catchment is part of the Stara Kiszewa concession for the exploration and exploitation of shale gas resources in the Lower Paleozoic Baltic Basin, northern Poland.

    Opis:
    Inwentaryzacja stanu udokumentowania zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych wykazała, że według stanu na dzień 31.12.2006 r. (Herbich i in., 2007) zasoby dyspozycyjne zostały ustalone dla obszarów o powierzchni stanowiącej 42,9% kraju. Na potrzeby dokonania oceny stanu zasobów wodnych kraju, dla obszarów nie objętych udokumentowaniem dyspozycyjnych zasobów wód podziemnych, zostały ustalone zasoby perspektywiczne wód podziemnych (Herbich i in., 2003). Znaczenie oszacowanych, z zastosowaniem uproszczonych metod, zasobów perspektywicznych ma charakter tymczasowy – do osiągnięcia stanu pełnego udokumentowania zasobów dyspozycyjnych dla całego kraju. Zasoby perspektywiczne wraz z zasobami dyspozycyjnymi stanowią podstawę dla oceny ilości zasobów wód podziemnych dostępnych do zagospodarowania w skali obszarów dorzeczy i regionów wodnych.

    Opis:
    A nationwide research program, which includes hydrogeological documenting of available groundwater resources in areas previously undocumented, is being currently implemented at the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute at the request of the National Water Management Authority. One of the program’s tasks is modernization (update) of the GIS database maintained by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey (PHS) since 2008. The article presents the current status of work on the modernization of the database of available groundwater resources. This database will be the primary and reference material for the use of the results of information on groundwater disposable resources for the implementation of standard procedures, UE reports and other multidisciplinary studies, including preparation of the water management balance sheets and the rules of water utilization in water region and drainage basin. The Polish Geological Institute is the main executor and coordinator of this task.

    Aktualnie prowadzone prace związane z poszukiwaniem, rozpoznawaniem a w przyszłości również możliwą eksploatacją niekonwencjonalnych złóż węglowodorów oraz wiążącym się z tą działalnością zapotrzebowaniem na znaczne ilości wód, w tym również wód podziemnych, wymusiły przyspieszenie prac związanych z udokumentowaniem zasobów wód podziemnych w obszarach dotychczas nieudokumentowanych. W artykule przedstawiono aktualny stan udokumentowania zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych oraz plan 6-letniego przedsięwzięcia, mającego na celu udokumentowanie zasobów dyspozycyjnych wód podziemnych na obszarach dotychczas nieudokumentowanych.
    The currently ongoing works to locate, identify and possibly future exploit the unconventional hydrocarbons as well as the coupled with this activity large water demand including groundwater, forced the intensification of works to document the groundwater resources in the areas which has not been documented yet. The paper shows the present state of the groundwater resources documentation process as well as presents the initiation of the 6 year program to document these resources in the not-till-now documented areas.

    Opis:
    In 2013–2018, it is intended to implement a program to document available groundwater resources in the up-to-now undocumented 40 balance areas. The work will be carried out in two tranches and four stages; in each of these stages, 8–13 documentations will be made. A tranche is composed of two modes of work: short mode – preparation of hydrogeological documentations, and full mode – implementation of the program and preparation of hydrogeological documentations. The currently ongoing work, to document available groundwater resources, includes preparation of 19 documentations (9 documentations in the first stage, and 10 in the second stage). The Polish Geological Institute is the main executor and coordinator of this task.

    Termin zasoby wód podziemnych wprowadzono do hydrogeologii ponad 100 lat temu przez analogię do stosowanego w geologii złóż pojęcia zasobów kopalin stałych. Określenie to wykorzystano na potrzeby planowania planowania przestrzennego i inwestowania w budowę ujęć wód podziemnych. Dyskusja na temat zasobów wód podziemnych jest ściśle związana z wprowadzaniem nowych metod badawczych w hydrogeologii – najpierw metod analitycznych, następnie metod wykorzystujących modele fizyczne, a obecnie modele numeryczne. Wskazane w Ramowej Dyrektywie Wodnej zasady zintegrowanego zarządzania zasobami wodnymi i ekologiczne potrzeby wodne ekosystemów są przyjęte do obowiązujących planów gospodarowania wodami w dorzeczach i regionach wodnych. Porównanie wielkości dostępnych do zagospodarowania zasobów wód podziemnych z ich aktualnym poborem jest podstawą zrównoważonego gospodarowania rezerwami tych wód. Wielkość zasobów zwykłych wód podziemnych możliwych do zagospodarowania, rozumianych jako suma zasobów dyspozycyjnych (21,4 mln m3/d) i perspektywicznych (15 mln m3/d), wynosi w Polsce ok. 36,4 mln m3/d (wg stanu rozpoznania na 31.12.2015 r.)
    The term “groundwater resources” was introduced to hydrogeology from economic geology similarly to the resources of ore bodies almost a hundred years ago. It has been used for the need of physical planning, investment in new water intakes, and water management. Discussion on the groundwater resources started in the past after implementation of new methods of their evaluation, e.g. analytical approaches, and physical and then numerical modelling techniques. The ecological aspects of water demand, indicated in the Water Framework Directive, oblige the EU countries to introduce a new idea for the estimation of groundwater resources. This idea is also presented in the water management plans for river catchment areas. Distribution of available groundwater resources in the country and comparison with the groundwater exploitation is the background of proper, sustainable management of its resources. Available groundwater resources of the country, understood as a total amount of disposable and prospective groundwater resources, is 36.4 million m3/day (as of December 31, 2015), including 21.4 million m3/day of disposable resources, and 15 million m3/day of estimated prospective resources.

    The paper presents the author’s approach to the quantitative assessment of the river catchment available groundwater resources in case of the Łeba River catchment in Poland. A strong emphasis is put on the evaluation of the groundwater flow system renewability which should always precede the resources model simulations. After assessing the catchment recharge using river flow records and a big lysimeter approximation the recharge distribution was calculated using the author’s constant volume transformation (CVT) method. The subsequent construction of the groundwater flow model and application of the CVT method coupled with the virtual wells concept led to the evaluation of the amount and distribution of the available groundwater resources in the catchment.
