    Opis:
    The purpose of this article is to analyze autobiographical components in the novel Le Page disgracié by Tristan L’Hermite, basing on the main criteria defined by Philippe Lejeune, Philippe Gasparini and René Demoris. It shows how the concept of ‘autobiographical pact’ and other cognate theories may only help to notice the complexity and variety of relations between literary fiction and biographical elements in Tristan L’Hermite’s work. In fact, by combining different esthetics and literary conventions, the uniqueness of this eclectic text seems make impossible to define its precise literary genre.

    In the 18th century, the Bible felt the full force of criticism by radical Enlightenment thinkers who read it piece by piece and denounced the process of its creation as an imposture – thus extending the break initiated by moral and historical critiques of the previous century. In doing so, they nevertheless failed to grant it the literary status of a “profane work”. Yet, Rousseau, who produced a literary rewriting of the Book of Judges with his Levite of Ephraim, pondered over the violence inflicted on biblical intertextuality during his exile in Môtiers: in his Letters Written from the Mountain, he compared it to the violence caused to his own literary works. By draw-ing this parallel, he opened a reflection on the different manners of reading a text, as well as the possibility of regulating the reader’s violence through proposing an ethics of literary reception. Analogy might not work as a substitute; however, it enabled Rousseau to go beyond the mistreatment which anti-philosophers or philosophers inflicted on his works, by giving, among other things, an autobiographical orienta-tion to his writing: one in which the author is ready to take responsibility for giving himself to the reader. The ambivalence of the sacred and the profane, the perception of a common essence of religion – defined either by sacrifice or gift – were thus what helped Rousseau invent the autobiographical pact.

    The paper describes the crucial significance of Witold Gombrowicz’s Diary in history of the intimate diary genre. The Diary violates the fundamental elements of the genre, introduces literary fiction, and forms complex identity of the speaking subject, which may be called the post-traditional identity. Therefore, the Gombrowicz’s work breaks the autobiographical pact, identified by Philippe Lejeune – author of classical works on autobiographical writing, as an essence of the genre.

    If the presence of extracts from the life of the author (Paul Auster) allows us to postulate the “autobiographical” project of the memorial writing, others on the contrary confer it with a fictive project. The use of a stratagem of increased self-distancing and the multiple “mise en abyme” of identities leaves us puzzled as to the existence of an autobiographical scheme specific to Auster’s creation. Through the many forms of auctorial disguises, games of duplication, selfreflective mirroring, identity usurpation and handwritten possession, memorial writing integrates the different autobiographies of others. These are transformed into a functionalized or “real” autobiography of a subject who is a narrator, a character and an author.

    Opis:
    The main topic of this paper is a book entitled Mother Departs (1999) by Tadeusz Różewicz – a kind of polyphonic palimpsest, a memoir (with narrative prose, poems, photographies, etc.). In this article, the author analyzes statuses of many “authors” and lyrical subjects in Różewicz’s works and verifies a hypothesis about autobiographism of this book (in Lejeune’s understanding). It is also shown that there is no one coherent subject (identical with the real author) and the texts are, at the same time, fictional and nonfictional. Therefore, it is regarded that Tadeusz Różewicz creates a kind of “unique genre” (a term by E. Balcerzan), which is a literary form of his memory processes. For this reason, its construction is unavailable for an external reader.
    Tematem artykułu jest wspomnieniowy tom Matka odchodzi (1999) Tadeusza Różewicza – książka wyjątkowa, polifoniczna, palimpsestowa i niespójna. W pracy dokonano analizy obecnych w dziele podmiotów autorskich, a także zweryfikowano przeświadczenie o autobiograficzności tekstu (według terminologii Lejeuene’a). Lektura wykazała, iż w tomie Różewicza brak jednego, spójnego, równoznacznego z rzeczywistym autorem podmiotu mówiącego oraz że umieszczone w książce teksty mają często podwójny, zależny od kontekstu, status (fikcjonalny/niefikcjonalny). Uznano więc, że Różewicz tworzy swoisty „gatunek jednorazowy” (termin Balcerzana) – wyjątkowo intymny i nieprzejrzysty, będący zapisem jego procesu wspominania, a więc niejako (pod względem wglądu do jego konstrukcyjnych reguł) niedostępny zewnętrznemu czytelnikowi.

    Tematem artykułu są osobiste wspomnienia Żydów z okresu I wojny światowej zamieszczone w księgach pamięci wybranych miejscowości Wołynia, Galicji Wschodniej i Królestwa Polskiego. Przedmiotem szczególnej uwagi są wspomnienia dotyczące życia codziennego, rodzinnego oraz relacja pomiędzy zmianami doświadczanymi wewnątrz rodziny a zmianami militarnymi i politycznymi. Artykuł ma na celu wykazanie, że wojna była inaczej doświadczana w każdym ze wspomnianych obszarów ze względu na inną historię działań wojennych na tych terenach, czynniki polityczne, ale także głębokie uwarunkowania społeczne. Na poziomie refleksji metodologicznej koncentruje się on na napięciach w relacji pamięć–historia. Autorka stara się również odpowiedzieć na pytanie, na ile wspomnienia zarejestrowane w księgach pamięci są zapisem I wojny światowej jako doświadczenia pokoleniowego i pamięci o nich jako wczesnego doświadczenia transformatywnego, a na ile wspomnienia te, w szczególności dziecięce, uległy deformacji lub zatarciu pod wpływem wydarzeń II wojny światowej i Holokaustu.
    This article concerns the personal memories of the Jews from the time of the First World War recorded in the memorial books of the selected localities of Wołyń, Eastern Galicia, and the Kingdom of Poland. Its main focus lies in the memories of daily and family life, as well as the alterations on the family level in relation to military and political changes. This article aims to demonstrate that the war was experienced in a slightly different way in each of the forementioned regions because of the different history of military operations, the political factors, but also the deep social structures. On the level of the methodology, the work focuses on the tensions between the memory and history. The author also attempted to determine to what degree the memories preserved in the memorial books are a recording of the World War I as a generational experience, as well as the memory of it as an early transformative experience. The work also tried to assess the level in which those memories effaced or were deformed under the influence off the events of the Second World War and the Holocaust.

    W artykule poruszono problem gatunku, narracji i konstrukcji podmiotu w Opowieści Pielgrzyma. Autorka dowodzi, że mimo mediacyjnego zapośredniczenia ustnego przekazu Loyoli tekst jest mówioną autobiografią w trzeciej osobie. W tym kontekście wprowadza pojęcie "paktu przedautobiograficznego", zawartego między autorem-narratorem-bohaterem a wykonawcą zapisu. Pakt ten określił granice "tajemnicy wyznania", ustalił zakres narracji i wyznaczył tryb jej konstruowania. Ponadto autorka przekonuje, że Opowieść wolno uznać za właściwą nowożytną autobiografię. Świadczy o tym literacka autokreacja podmiotu, ktory podejmując metafikcyjną "grę" z odbiorcami, relacjonuje swoje dzieje przez pryzmat odkrywania w sobie "kogoś innego", odsłania istotę procesów tożsamościotworczych, artykułuje emocjonalną dynamikę rzeczywistości, wreszcie - przez gest artystyczny zachęca do podjęcia egzystencjalnego wyzwania.
    The article raises the problem of the genre, narration and subject construction in The Pilgrim's Story. The author of the article argues that despite the mediational/transitional (from oral to written) character of Loyola's narrative, the text is spoken autobiography in the third person. In this context, she introduces the concept of "a pre-autobiographical pact" between the author-narratorhero and the recorder. This pact has determined the boundaries of the "confession secrecy", the scope of the narrative and its constructive mode. Moreover, the article proves that Loyola's text is the proper autobiography in the modern sense. Essentially the main argument is, firstly, the literary model of the subject's self-creation and, secondly, the model of the metafictional "game": the subject recounts his story through the prism of recognition of the Other in himself, reveals the essence of the process of self-identity formation, articulates the emotional dynamics of human existence, finally, through artistic gesture encourages one to take up the existential challenge.
