Opis:
Autobiographical memory is a specific kind of memory concerning events and issues related to yourself. Your conception of your own life involves narratives in which all of yours experiences are interrelated. Autobiographical memory connects your present self with your past experiences (that’s why it’s important for theories about continuity of self). In this article I will analyse autobiographical texts of French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the context of autobiographical memory theories.

The Author discusses three autobiographical dictionaries (two of them are autobiographical in a strict sense of the term, the third one bares a visibly autobiographical approach), each representing a different language as well as founded on various methodological approaches. According to him despite the differences they all prove the ever growing influence of autobiography on both literature and on our everyday experience. The former – the Author concludes – evidences additionally that viewing autobiography as a uniquely a literary term is far too narrow a category.

Opis:
Discourse, understood as a category of the cognitive character, was applied in this article to analyse the diaries of two Polish composers and feature writers – Stefan Kisielewski and Zygmunt Mycielski, written in the communist Poland. The purpose of the analysis was to show how this special cultural, social and political context was reflected in their works and how it affected their choices as far as the style and topics were concerned. This paper was also supposed to single out various types of discourses and discursive strategies in the authors’ diaries. A particular attention was paid to the selfawareness of the writers and methods of its expression, either in a direct or oblique way, which often requires an active, almost “archaeological” reading that involves revealing new reserves of meanings from under another layer of words. The performed analysis leads to the conclusion that various types of discourses (anti-totalitarian, chronicle, critical and musical, political, intimate) are present in the discussed works. The above conclusion invites one to ask the following question (which sets a further direction in the research): To what extent is it an individual feature of the authors’ works and to what extent is it a certain element of the style of this period?

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the motif of the Shoah in female autobiographcial prose after the year 2000. The paper shows that, in recent years, more and more female authors in the second and third post-Holocaust generations have been recording their traumatic experience, and that the reason for it lies in the social stigmatization of Jewish people. It is stressed here that the issues of the Holocaust are part and parcel of a cultural taboo and – similarly to female written prose – they are frequently ignored or evaluated negatively. The Holocaust issues are tackled by contemporary young writers of Jewish descent who – contrary to the previous generation authors – have not experienced the mass murder of Jews; nevertheless, they feel its effects today. This paper proves that the research into trauma studies is not really conducted in Poland, and paying attention to a female viewpoint is very rare. The examples referred to in the paper of the autobiographical novels by Ewa Kuryluk, Agata Tuszyńska, Roma Ligocka and Magdalena Tulli demonstrate that this kind of writing is becoming more and more important within the literature focused on the Shoah. Compared to the autobiographical fiction by Marek Bieńczyk, Jan Tomasz Gross and Michał Głowiński, female Holocaust stories are distinguished by their authenticity, emotionality, intimacy and honesty of narration. The stories are devoid of any pathos, and they highlight the figure of a mother. Moreover, their confessions are based on the physical feeling of the legacy which has remained in their hearts and minds after the trauma that their loved ones had to experience. An attempt to describe prose post-Holocaust prose is made in comparison to Jewish literature in Poland, drawing the reader’s attention to the characteristic features of these issues compared to the autobiographical works by men.

The aim of the study was to verify hypotheses about time changeability of dream characteristics depending on the participants’ age and affective value of the dream. The study was conducted online. Participants of the study were 68 individuals between the age of 17 and 85. The participants were asked to prepare detailed descriptions of their dreams, next they had to identify elements of the dreams, refer them to their real life, and assess their affective value. In the dreams of late adolescents, and young and middle-aged adults the most frequently recalled period in a positive context turned out to be late adolescence and early adulthood, whereas in a negative context the participants would recall their present developmental phase and the period of late childhood. Unpleasant dreams of older individuals were mainly connected with the period of middle adulthood, whereas those pleasant ones referred to various periods of their entire life.

Multilevelness of personal development and autobiographical narrativesAutobiographical narrative is a means of continuous ordering, integrating and giving new meanings to life experiences. Analyses of autobiographical narratives of adults characterized by a high level of generativity (commitment to passing down values and supporting development of the next generation) – as described by E. Erikson – found differences between the structure and content of their stories and the ones created by less generative adults (McAdams, Diamond, Mansfield, de St. Aubin, 1997). One of the basic structural differences is that the former are dominated by redemption sequences (subjective negative-to-positive revaluation of situations), whereas the latter – by contamination sequences (positive-to-negative revaluation). In the context of the above-specifi ed fi ndings, the question arises whether the observations of the particular type of revaluation can be linked with the concept of multilevelness of personal development and how developmental transformations, connected with the extension of conscious actualization of individual freedom, are refl ected in the means of structuring self-narratives. Analyses of autobiographical narratives by individuals who reached a high level of personal development suggest possible links between the concept of multilevel personal development and the following characteristic features of self-narratives: fi nding coherence between many plots of a story, the prevalence of redemption imagery and integration of basic motifs contained in a life story

Michał Głowiński, who has been so far perceived primarily as a distinguished literary critic, well known for his analysis of the communist newspeak, is also the author of autobiographical narratives. The article analyzes certain aspects of Głowiński’s writing, such as the characters, time, space, fragmentariness, contexts and language. After almost sixty years of silence, in his texts Głowiński uncovers the layers of memory which come from “the epoch of gas chambers”. He does it in order to face the trauma of the Holocaust.

In this article journeys to autobiographical places of the selected writers (Andrzej Stasiuk, Egon Bondy, Ondra Łysohorsky) are interpreted as a form of intensified reading of their works. Travel texts (written by Jáchym Topol, Jacek Podsiadło and Bogdan Trojak) resulting from such a sensual reading naturally refer to both pretexts as well as biographies of the authors visited. It is not important if the travellers meet these authors in person or not. The ways of moving in space are simultaneously cognitive figures of the texts created: deviation from the mainstream of the journey becomes visible both in the digressive nature of the narration as well as in the multiple intertextual connections.

The authors share common social background, all having been raised as Evangelical boys in Śląsk Cieszyński. While none of them has a formal literary background in strict sense, their texts show an interesting dynamics of narrative meanings. The reader is referred to the writers’ homeland, their own values, moral imperatives, and idiosyncratic understanding of Evangelical-pheasant ethos. The essay shows how this ethos is formed in narration to build the context for the interpretation of uneasy past experience.

Opis:
The text is an analysis of interrelations binding autobiographical narration to individual and social identity. The first part tackles the fundamental connection between narration and individual, personal identity of the narrator – Paul Ricoeur, serving as a guide to this fundamental part of the proposed analysis, assumes that the narrative continuum follows and imitates the temporal continuum, constituting a flow in which it becomes possible to inscribe stories modifying and corroborating the reflected course of life. Conceptualizing and bringing to consciousness one’s course of life, auto-narration constitutes both a form of conscientious self-judgement and an occasion for self-deception. In the second part, the author attempts to show how auto narration and its significance for the individual identity changes, when it gets written down in the form of autobiography, subjected to the rigor of the writing and entering in complex interrelationships with social memory and identity. Here the author’s guides are among others Philippe Lejeune, Janet Verner Gunn and Georges Gusdorf. In the third part, the hitherto reconstructed structure of auto-narration and autobiography is destroyed: referring to such authors as Louis A. Renza, Jean Starobinski, John Sturrock, Michel Beaujour and Jacques Derrida, I demonstrate that the autobiographical undertaking is doubtful, and that the optimistic project of saving oneself by means of auto-narration and autobiography is an illusion. The presence of Derrida in the text is scarcely visible; yet it is Derrida, in dialogue with the late Ricoeur, that show us the way out from the autobiographical and identitary trap.

The article is an attempt to elaborate on particularly YA novels by Polish writers, Stefan Żeromski, Marcin Szczygieł, Małgorzata Musierowicz, Rafał Kosik, Jerzy Szczygieł, who used in their works own deep (positive and negative) or sometimes “tough” childhood experiences which were registered in their autobiographical memory. The term “autobiographical memory” relates to the complex process of a build of human identity during the whole their life by the two fields, childhood and adulthood. Nonetheless, the core of autobiographical memory are the unique emotions and events which contain diversity information about personal experiences. Sometimes these emotional signs are utilized by writers in their works dedicated to the YA readers and thanks to them the novels become a symbolic, textual “bridge” which connects different generations. Therefore, the author of this article coins the term “emotional text” being of an evidence of co-create certain YA novels by the author’s childhood experiences, including crucial emotions and feelings for them. According to the author, these novels depict the character’s feelings, moods, thinking which are linked with the reception of art and also triggered by the war are a good examples of the “emotional text”.
