The structure of Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is depend of many factors at individual stages of casting production. There is a rich literature documenting research on the relationship between heat treatment and the resulting microstructure of cast alloy. A significant amount of research is conducted towards the use of IT tools for indications production parameters for thin-walled castings, allowing for the selection of selected process parameters in order to obtain the expected properties. At the same time, the selection of these parameters should make it possible to obtain as few defects as possible. The input parameters of the solver is chemical composition Determined by the previous system module. Target wall thickness and HB of the product determined by the user. The method used to implement the solver is the method of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The developed IT tool was used to determine the parameters of heat treatment, which will ensure obtaining the expected value for hardness. In the first stage, the ADI cast iron heat treatment parameters proposed by the expert were used, in the next part of the experiment, the settings proposed by the system were used. Used of the proposed IT tool, it was possible to reduce the number of deficiencies by 3%. The use of the solver in the case of castings with a wall thickness of 25 mm and 41 mm allowed to indication of process parameters allowing to obtain minimum mechanical properties in accordance with the PN-EN 1564:2012 standard. The results obtained by the solver for the selected parameters were verified. The indicated parameters were used to conduct experimental research. The tests obtained as a result of the physical experiment are convergent with the data from the solver.

The research article address, the mechanical properties such as fatigue, impact strength and tribological properties of Austempered ductile iron (ADI) has been investigated. The samples of ADI iron were austenitized at 927°C for 2 hrs and later it was under austempering process for 2 hrs at a temperature range of 240°C to 400°C. Experiments under axial loading has been carried out on three different compositions (without Ni(X), 0.22wt.%Ni(X1), 0.34wt.%Ni(X2). Fabricated test bars were converted in to as per ASTM standard samples for different tests. In order to study the influence of chunky nickel morphology studies on fatigue life and impact strength were carried out on a second set of specimens without any microstructural defect. Metallurgical analyses were performed on all the samples of heat treated samples (AF - Ausferrite, MB - Mixed bainite, M - Martensite, RA - Retained Austenite and N - Nodule) were found and compared. It was found that a mean content of 22% of chunky nickel in the microstructure (with respect to total Ni content) influence considerably the fatigue and impact strength properties of the cast iron. Moreover tribological properties of the specimens were also studied under dry sliding conditions at various sliding speed and load. The wear resistance and coefficient of friction were found to increase with increase in load and sliding speed.

The influence of the hold time of the austempering heat treatment at 280°C on the microstructure and corrosion resistance in NaCl-based media of austempered ductile iron was investigated using X-ray diffraction, micro-hardness measurements, corrosion tests and surface observations. Martensite was only found in the sample which was heat treated for a short period (10 minutes). Corrosion tests revealed that this phase does not play any role in the anodic processes. Numerous small pits were observed in the α-phase which is the precursor sites in all samples (whatever the value of the hold time of the austempering heat treatment).

The combination of the austempered ductile iron mechanical properties strongly depend on the parameters used on the austempering cycle. On this study, the influence of austempering time and austenitizing temperature on the properties of a ductile iron were evaluated. A metallic bath of Zamak at 380°C was used as an austempering mean. A set of ductile iron blocks were austenitized at 900°C for 90 minutes and submitted to different austempering times in order to determine the best combination of microstructural and mechanical properties. After the definition of the time of austempering, the reduction of the austenitizing temperature was evaluated. The best combination of properties was obtained with austenitizing at 860°C and austempering during 60 minutes.

Materiały inżynierskie wykorzystywane w licznych zastosowaniach, w szczególności w motoryzacyjnych i wojskowych, muszą sprostać nowym wymaganiom, z których jednym z najważniejszych jest odporność na obciążenia dynamiczne. Ponieważ zjawiska związane z takimi interakcjami są dość złożone, stosuje się niestatyczne typy testów do oceny i porównania różnych potencjalnych materiałów. W pracy tej dwa rodzaje żeliwa ADI wytworzono w różnych warunkach austenityzowania i hartowania, otrzymując różną morfologię ausferrytu. Próbki z obu materiałów były poddawane różnym dynamicznym szybkościom odkształcania. Oceniono odporność na martenzytyczną przemianę odkształceniową w zależności od mikrostruktury i szybkości odkształcania. Badania XRD i LM były wykorzystane do oceny właściwości oraz wpływu dużych szybkości odkształcania na strukturę materiału.
Engineering materials used in numerous applications, in particular in automotive and military applications, have to meet new requirements, one of the most important being resistance to dynamic loads. Because the phenomena associated with such interactions are quite complex, non-static test types are used to evaluate and compare different potential materials. In this work, two types of ADI cast iron were made in different austenitizing and quenching conditions to obtain different ausferrite morphology. Samples from both materials were subjected to different dynamic deformation rates. The resistance to martensitic strain transformation was evaluated depending on the microstructure and rate of deformation. XRD and LM were used to assess the properties and impact of high strain rates on the material structure.

The paper presents the results of wear tests obtained for 4 groups of materials: surface-hardened alloy steels and alloy cast steels for structural applications, hard-wearing surface-hardened alloy cast steels, and austempered alloy cast irons. The wear tests have been performed on a specially designed test rig that allows reproducing the real operating conditions of chain wheels, including the rolling and sliding form of contact between elements. The chain wheels subjected to tests were operated with the use of loose quartz abrasive. This study presents results of measurements of material parameters, micro-structure of a surface subject to wear, as well as the linear wear determined for the materials considered. Based on the results, the following was found: the best wear properties were obtained for surface-hardened alloy steels and wear surface; strengthening of the ADI surface took place - most probably as a result of transformation of austenite into martensite; the uniformity of the structure of the materials affects the surface wear process. The study also indicated a significant degree of graphite deformation in ADI characterized by the upper ausferritic structure and its oblique orientation in relation to the surface, which resulted in a facilitated degradation of the surface caused by the quartz abrasive.

The aim of this work was to propose a methodology supporting the task of collecting the comparative data on studies of the mechanical properties of ADI. Collecting of research data is an important step in the process of finding the optimum design solutions for newly made products - experimental data allow us properly calibrate the manufacturing process of ADI to let the final product achieve the required properties. Parameters of the ADI production process, i.e. the time and temperature of austenitising and austempering, as well as the alloying elements added to ductile iron affect the ADI properties. The design process can use research data collected, among others, from the Web. As stated in the article, the process of data acquisition can be supported by semantic technologies, including ontologies which are descriptive logic formalism.

The results of comparison of the wear resistance of manganese steel X120Mn12, S235IR steel and austempered ductile iron ADI are presented. The aim of this study is to determine the possibility of replacing an item made of X120Mn12 steel with another material. For this purpose, all of the samples were measured for Brinell hardness. The samples were then tested for wear resistance in a specially designed test stand. The test resided in shot penning the surface of the test samples within the shot stream with the defined parameters. The test stand used in the test ensured the shot penning parameter stability. The test samples underwent multiple tests in which shot penning occurred in reccurrent cycles. Three test limits were established for the present study: 60, 120 and 180 cycles. The wear resistance measure in this study was the decrease in the tested sample’s weight expressed in grams and calculated for a unit of the shot-penned surface. The obtained results confirmed the possibility of using ADI as a possible replacement of manganese steels in specific cases. Of the eight types of the samples tested, the two ADI samples exhibited abrasion resistance which was comparable to that of the reference sample, while one exhibited better resistance. What constitutes the optimal chemical composition and the corresponding optimal heat treatment for particular cases remains an issue for further research.

The research described in this article is a fragment in the series of published works trying to determine the applicability of new materials for parts of the mining machinery. Tests were performed on two groups of austempered ductile iron - one of which contained 1.5% Ni and 0.5% Mo, while the other contained 1.9% Ni and 0.9% Cu. Each group has been heat treated according to the three different heat treatment variants and then the material was subjected to detailed testing of mechanical properties and abrasion wear resistance, measuring also hardness and magnetic properties, and conducting microstructural examinations. The results indicated that each of the tested materials was senstive to the surface hardening effect, which resulted in high wear resistance. It has been found that high temperature of austempering, i.e. 370°C, favours high wear resistance of ductile iron containing nickel and molybdenum. Low temperature of austempering, i.e. 270°C, develops high wear resistance in ductile iron containing nickel and copper. Both these materials offer completely different mechanical properties and as such can be used for different and specific applications.
Badania przestawione w artykule wpisują się w cykl publikacji określających przydatność nowych materiałów na elementy maszyn górniczych. Testy przeprowadzono dla dwóch grup żeliwa sferoidalnego ausferrytycznego - jedna z nich zawierała 1,5%Ni i 0,5%Mo, druga natomiast 1,9%Ni i 0,9%Cu. Każdą grupę obrobiono cieplnie w trzech różnych wariantach i materiał taki poddano badaniom: własności mechanicznych, odporności na zużycie ścierne, pomiarom twardości i magnetycznym oraz ocenie mikrostruktury. Wyniki wskazują, że każdy z analizowanych materiałów umacnia się powierzchniowo, co powoduje wysoką odporność na zużycie. Stwierdzono, że wysoka temperatura hartowania izotermicznego tj. 370°C, sprzyja wysokiej odporności na zużycie żeliwa zawierającego nikiel i molibden. Niska temperatura hartowania izotermicznego tj. 270°C, sprzyja natomiast wysokiej odporności na zużycie żeliwa zawierającego nikiel i miedź. Oba te materiały charakteryzują się diametralnie różnymi własnościami mechanicznymi stąd też możliwość ich wykorzystania do odmiennych, specyficznych zastosowań.

Ductile iron casts with a higher silicone content were produced. The austempering process of high silicone ductile iron involving different austempering times was studied and the results presented. The results of metallographical observations and tensile strength tests were offered. The obtained results point to the fact that the silicone content which is considered as acceptable in the literature may in fact be exceeded. The issue is viewed as requiring further research.

In this article, an attempt was made to determine the effect of dynamic load on the austempered ductile iron resistance obtained under different conditions of heat treatment. Tests were carried out on six types of cylindrical ductile iron samples austempered at 320, 370 and 400°C for 30 and 180 minutes. For each type of material, two samples were collected. As a next step in the investigations, the samples were subjected to a Taylor impact test. The samples after striking a non-deformable, rigid target were deformed on their front face. After Taylor test, a series of material tests was performed on these samples, noting a significant increase of hardness in the deformed part. This was particularly well visible in the ductile iron isothermally quenched at higher temperatures of 370 and 400°C. Inthezone of sample deformation, an increase in the content of ferromagnetic phase was also reported, thus indicating the occurrence of martensitic transformation in the microstructure containing mechanically unstable austenite. A significant amount of deformed graphite was also observed, which was a symptom of the deformation process taking place in samples. The ductile iron was characterized by high toughness and high resistance to the effect of dynamic loads, especially as regards the grade treated at a temperature of 370°C.
W artykule podjęto próbę określenia wpływu obciążeń dynamicznych na odporność żeliwa sferoidalnego ausferrytycznego otrzymanego w różnych warunkach obróbki cieplnej. Badania przeprowadzono dla 6 rodzajów próbek cylindrycznych wykonanych z żeliwa i poddanych hartowaniu izotermicznemu w temperaturze 320, 370 i 400°C w czasie 30 i 180 minut. Dla każdego rodzaju materiału pobrano po dwie próbki, a następnie poddano je uderzeniowemu testowi Taylor'a. Próbki te, po uderzeniu w nieodkształcalną, sztywną płytę zostały czołowo zdeformowane. Wykonano szereg badań materiałowych, stwierdzając znaczne zwiększenie twardości w części odkształconej materiału. Dotyczyło to zwłaszcza żeliwa hartowanego izotermicznie w temperaturach: 370 i 400°C. Wyznaczono również przyrost fazy ferromagnetycznej w strefie odkształconej próbki, co może świadczyć o zachodzeniu przemiany martenzytycznej w mikrostrukturze zawierającej niestabilny mechanicznie austenit. Stwierdzono również obecność znacznej ilości zdeformowanego grafitu, który był wyznacznikiem zachodzenia procesu deformacji próbek. Stwierdzono dużą plastyczność żeliwa oraz jego wysoką odporność na dynamiczne obciążenia, zwłaszcza dla gatunków hartowanych izotermicznie w temperaturze 370°C.

The technology currently used for the fabrication of toothed wheels, gear couplings and chain drums involves the induction hardening process or hardening and tempering after carburising. All these processes take a long time and cause adverse changes in the dimensions and surface quality of products, requiring post-treatment machining to remove the resulting cavities. The paper proposes the implementation of gear elements made of ductile iron with nanoausferritic matrix obtained by a new appropriate heat treatment process. The new material offers good performance characteristics and nearly no need for the application of other technological processes commonly used in the manufacture of gears.
Obecnie stosowany proces projektowania kół zębatych zakłada hartowanie indukcyjne uzębienia po procesach ulepszania cieplnego lub hartowanie i odpuszczanie po nawęglaniu. Procesy te są długotrwałe i powodują niekorzystne zmiany wymiarów wyrobu oraz zmiany powierzchniowe, które muszą być usunięte poprzez obróbkę skrawaniem. W artykule zaproponowano wykonanie kół zębatych z żeliwa o osnowie nanoausferrytu uzyskaną w wyniku odpowiednich procesów cieplnych. Nowy materiał oferuje dobre właściwości użytkowe oraz możliwości w ograniczeniu procesów technologicznych wykonywanych przy wytwarzaniu kół zębatych.

In this study, a preliminary evaluation was made of the applicability of the signals of the cutting forces, vibration and acoustic emission in diagnosis of the hardness and microstructure of ausferritic ductile iron and tool edge wear rate during its machining. Tests were performed on pearlitic-ferritic ductile iron and on three types of ausferritic ductile iron obtained by austempering at 400, 370 and 320°C for 180 minutes. Signals of the cutting forces (F), vibration (V) and acoustic emission (AE) were registered while milling each type of the cast iron with a milling cutter at different degrees of wear. Based on individual signals from all the sensors, numerous measures were determined such as e.g. the average or maximum signal value. It was found that different measures from all the sensors tested depended on the microstructure and hardness of the examined material, and on the tool condition. Knowing hardness of the material and the cutting tool edge condition, it is possible to determine the structure of the material .Simultaneous diagnosis of microstructure, hardness, and the tool condition is probably feasible, but it would require the application of a diagnostic strategy based on the integration of numerous measures, e.g. using neural networks.
