Opis:
The second is currently defined by the microwave transition in cesium atoms. Optical clocks offer the prospects of stabilities and reproducibilities that exceed those of cesium. This paper reviews the progress in frequency standards based on optical transitions, recommended by International Committee for Weights and Measures, as a secondary representation of the second. The operation of these standards is briefly described and factors affecting stability and accuracy of these and some new optical clocks are discussed.

This article discusses the current position of the supreme nuclear regulatory authority in Poland – the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA President) in the structure of government administration in the light of provisions of the Polish Constitution and of international and European law, taking into account the principle of independence of nuclear regulatory authorities. A particular attention was paid to the critical analysis of the current subordination of the PAA President to the supervision of the minister responsible for the environment. Based on the arguments relating to the importance of the tasks of the PAA President and their importance for national security, their multifaceted character in relation to various sectors of government administration, as well as on the basis of comparative and historical ones, it is postulated to restore the supervision of the Prime Minister over the PAA President.

The article discusses the way of functioning of an atomic bomb in Jacek Dukaj’s works. A lot of attention is particularly paid to the analysis of the functions the A-bomb fulfils in this writer’s contemporary novel – Xavras Wyżryn. It is indicated that Dukaj used mainly symbolic power of atomic weapons in this work. The system of negative associations and emotions relating to these weapons clashed with the Polish messianic tradition of struggle for independence, which served as a basis for reflection on the issue of terrorism. In Dukaj’s novel, an atomic bomb is not the part of a coherent futurological vision or the basis for a deeper reflection concerning the civilization threats. In the writer’s later works, in which the reflection is clearly present, nuclear weapons no longer play a significant role. The threats presented are of different nature: they are connected with genetic, memetic or ecological experiments. The example of Dukaj’s works – the way in which the atomic weapons are present and absent in it – is a starting point for a hypothesis on the reduced attractiveness of nuclear weapons as a motif of the fantasy literature. Although they still carry a huge emotional load, at present the civilization concerns, which expressed themselves as the fear of nuclear weapons – e.g. the fear of excessive power of the mankind, the fear of selfdestruction or the changes taking place in the human species, to a great extent have shifted elsewhere.

Lead is an important constituent widely used in different industrial processes. For evaluation of workers’ exposure to trace toxic metal of Pb (II), solid-phase extraction (SPE) was optimized. SPE using mini columns filled with XAD-4 resin was developed with regard to sample pH, ligand concentration, loading flow rate, elution solvent, sample volume, elution volume, the amount of resins, and sample matrix interferences. Lead ions were retained on a solid sorbent and then eluted, followed by a simple determination of analytes with flame atomic absorption spectrometery. The obtained recoveries of metal ions were greater than 92%. This method was validated with 3 different pools of spiked urine samples; it showed a good reproducibility over 6 consecutive days as well as 6 within-day experiments. This optimized method can be considered successful in simplifying sample preparation for a trace residue analysis of lead in different matrices when evaluating occupational and environmental exposures is required.

In this paper we present the investigation aimed at the photoresist roughness change determination as a reliable estimator of the exposition rate in the processing verification in semiconductor industry. By employing atomic force microscopy as the 3D high resolution surface imaging tool, we tested twelve popular photoresists in terms of the morphological properties changes, while the following radiation doses were applied. Basing on high precision, and repetitive sample positioning, it was possible to perform the tests with high degree of confidence and observe the roughness change dynamics. Various profiles of roughness changes were observed, showing the need for individual study of each material. Moreover, it was possible to select the photoresists which due to poor homogeneity and small roughness changes are not suitable to such a verification. According to our knowledge, no such study was performed so far.

The transmission characteristics for 85Rb and 87Rb laser-induced dichroism atomic filters operating on rubidium D1 lines (795 nm) transitions are analyzed. By means of semiclassical density matrix equations of motion, a three-level model for the transmission characteristics of the ground state laser-induced dichroism atomic filter is presented. Calculative results show that this filter, using two counterpropagating pump and probe beams, can obtain higher transmission, narrower bandwidth and larger tuning capability than that using two copropagating pump and probe beams; with the aid of counterpropagating pump, the 85Rb ground state laser-induced dichroism atomic filter can be more effective to achieve higher peak transmission (>34%) and larger tunability (>1 GHz) than the 87Rb ground state laser-induced dichroism atomic filter in the same operation parameters. This result may be helpful for improving peak transmission (14.6%) of Rb ground state laser-induced dichroism atomic filter reported (CERÈ A. et al., Opt. Lett. 34(7), 2009, pp. 1012–1014).

Thin film samples (d ≈40 nm) of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc, were implanted with Ga⁺ at ion energy E =20 keV and ion fluences D=3×10¹⁴-3×10¹⁵ cm¯² and N⁺ with the same energy and ion fluence D=3×10¹⁴ cm¯². The Ga⁺ ion beam induced surface structural modification of the implanted material, displayed by formation of new phase at non-equilibrium condition, which could be accompanied by considerable changes in the optical properties of the ta-C films. The N⁺ implantation also results in modification of the surface structure. The induced structural modification of the implanted material results in a considerable change of its topography and optical properties. Nanoscale topography and structural properties characterisation of the Ga⁺ and N⁺ implanted films were performed using atomic spectroscopy analysis. The observed considerable surface structural properties modification in the case of the higher fluence Ga⁺ implanted samples results from the relatively high concentration of introduced Ga⁺ atoms, which is of the order of those for the host element.

Jindřich Polák’s film Tomorrow I’ll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea (Zítra vstanu a opařím se Cajeme) of 1977 is neither the first nor the last attempt to “detonate” an atomic bomb by the Czech filmmakers. However, this science fiction comedy uses the Wells’s concept of time travel to entertain a viewer with what the contemporary discourse calls the counterfactual history or simply considerations on “what if...”. The film was made in the peak period of normalization, thus all the historiosophical, ideological or political allusions are deeply hidden. Despite the futuristic context, diegesis is recognizable and contemporary at the same time, and thus full of ambiguous motivations of characters. The atomic bomb, therefore, is not merely a decorative artifact around which the main characters move.

Minerals content of Citrus jambhiri (rough lemon) fruit was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and flame atomic emission spectrometry (FAES). The peel, moisture and ash contents of rough lemon were found to be 18.35 %, 23.75 % and 2.04 % respectively. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) of rough lemon juice was found to be 70.0 mg/100 g. The chemical composition of essential oil of rough lemon peel was determined. The major compound was found to be limonene (84.5 %) followed by sabinene, β-myrcene, α-terpineol, 1,3-tetradecadiene and linalool.

Do odtwarzania jednostek czasu i częstotliwości używane są obecnie atomowe wzorce częstotliwości. W referacie przedstawiono sposoby zwiększenia ich dokładności poprzez udział w tworzeniu międzynarodowych atomowych skal czasu TAI i UTC oraz krajowych niezależnych atomowych skal czasu. Omówiono dokładniej niezależną Polską Atomową Skalę Czasu TA(PL), jej organizację i sposób realizacji współpracy, dotychczasowe osiągnięcia i plany na przyszłość. Poruszono też problematykę związaną z określaniem parametrów metrologicznych atomowych wzorców częstotliwości.
At present, atomic time and frequency standards are used for realization of time and frequency units. In this work, methods of increasing accuracy of these units by participation in the international atomic timescales TAI and UTC and independent local atomic timescales are presented. The independent Polish Atomic Timescale TA(PL) is described more exactly. The problems related to metrological parameters of atomic time and frequency standards are briefly treated too.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 are a symbolic source of all later views on a nuclear holocaust. The specificity of the Japanese narratives, however, lies in the fact that they take the first-person form, and thus they give a direct testimony of the individuals’ experience. In the article I refer to the personal accounts of the victims of the atomic bomb (the so-called hibakusha) to prove that corporeality is employed in them as the primary category of description, and functions as the existential ground on which both the horror of the explosion is constructed, and the collapse of the “world of life” of the community is experienced.

Workers at metal machining workstations are exposed to airborne dust particles containing metals and their compounds. Their harmful impact on the workers’ health depends on both their chemical composition and their distribution. The aim of this study was to determine the content of metals in dust fractions emitted in the process of mechanical machining of products made of brass, steel and cast iron. Samples taken during grinding, turning and drilling were tested. The concentration of metals in dust fractions was determined with atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of iron, manganese, chromium, zinc, lead, copper and nickel in the dust fractions was highly differentiated depending on the size of the particles, the material and the processes used.

This paper presents some results of investigations on aluminum oxide Al2O3 thin films prepared by the atomic layer deposition method on polished monocrystalline silicon. It has been described how the technological parameters of the deposition process, like the number of cycles and substrate temperature, influenced the optical properties and morphology of prepared thin films. Their physical and optical properties like thickness, uniformity and refractive index have been investigated with spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy and UV/vis optical spectroscopy.

In this note we show that given an indeterminate Hamburger moment sequence, it is possible to perturb the first moment in such way that the obtained sequence remains an indeterminate Hamburger moment sequence. As a consequence we prove that every sequence of real numbers is a moment sequence for a signed discrete measure supported in $ \mathbb{R}_+ $.
