Opis:
Aim: Economic development, connected with the concept of a society engaged in lifelong learning, demands that education produce optimal professional competences. The aim of this study was to determine the motives for the choice of physical education studies, and ascertain expectations concerning professional competences, as well as self-evaluation of competences acquired, in current and former athletes and non-athletes. Methods. 226 people were examined, all studying physical education at the Faculty of Physical Culture in Gorzow Wielkopolski, a branch of the University School of Physical Education in Poznan. Purposive sampling was used (Radzińska, Nowak, L., Nowak, M., 2013). The study included current (22.6%) and former athletes (31.8%) as well as non-athletes (45.6%). A diagnostic survey was employed, with the use of the techniques of auditorium questionnaire, interview and document analysis. In order to draw statistical conclusions, the trait frequency and the independence χ2 test were used. Results. Former athletes more often reported having been motivated to choose the studies by their interest in employment with institutions of physical culture while non-athletes by their wish to obtain jobs in schools (p ≤ 0.05). Expectations of competence in physical education methodology were indicated by all respondents, slightly more often by former athletes and non-athletes (p ≤ 0.05). For current athletes, competence in physical fitness was important. Psycho-pedagogical competence in motivating schoolchildren to work was expected by most students (84.5%), slightly more often by former athletes and non-athletes (p ≤ 0.05). Respondents rated their preparation for employment with regard to foreign languages and preparation for scientific work as average and fair, and their selfeducation ability and computer skills as good.

Assessments and testing of young athletes often exclude the fundamental and functional movement capacity, which are critical for healthy motor development of adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate functional capacity of young female volleyball players and determine if participation in volleyball leads to development of movement dysfunctions. Two-hundred fifty-eight (258) adolescent female volleyball players (14.3 ± 1.7 yrs) underwent the functional movement screen. Person correlation showed no significant relationship between functional tests and playing experience, while age showed significant, but weak relationship with total functional score (r = 0.189; p < 0.005). Overall, 44% of participants scored less than 14. Paired sample t-tests show significant bilateral asymmetries in hurdle step, in-line lunge, and shoulder mobility tests. Functional movement screen was useful in identifying functional limitations and asymmetries in young female athletes. However, as neither age nor playing experience were strongly associated with functional score, more attention should be given to the qualitative movement assessment of individual tests, rather than the composite score.

Introduction: Research has shown that exercise increases levels of dopamine in cer tain sub - cortical brain regions. Increased dopamine activity in the brain has been linked to increased risk - taking. The purpose of this study was to determine if an increase in risk - taking is apparent in male athletes and non - athletes after strenuous exercise. Method: Ten athletes (age: 20.2±SD year) and ten non - athletes (age: 20.7±SD) in a university setting completed the BART (a validated protocol to asses risk - taking behavior) either after exercise or at r est. Result: Athletes obtained total 24.92 ± 10.99 pumps and Non - Athletes 42.76 ± 16.45 pumps . Discusion: AN C OVA’s showed that there was significant difference between athletes and non - athletes ( p< 0 .0 1) on the risk behavior test. Post hoc tests showed that for non - athletes there was also a significant difference for those that exercise immediately before the risk behavior test, p= 0 .003. This was not the case with athletes, p= 0 .683. Results indicate that while exercise increased risk - taking in the non - athlete subjects, it did not have an effect on the athlete population.

The aim of the study is to expand knowledge in meaningfulness of life of athlete and non-athlete college students at universities in Bratislava and identify differences in its dimensions: affective, motivation and cognitive. The research sample comprised of 198 undergraduates (males: n=90, 20.68±1.56 years of age; female: n=108, 20.74±1.16 years of age). The respondents were divided into 2 groups according to their sports activities: college students who do not take active part in any sports activities (non-athlete respondents), and college students who are engaged regularly (at least twice a week) in sport activities. The questionnaire The Scale of Life Meaningfulness was used as a research tool. The results revealed significant differences in total score of meaningfulness of life by male (U=383.0, p=0.001, r=0.52) and also female (U=687.5, p=0.001, r=0.45). According to three-component model we have found out the significant differences between athlete and non-athlete college students in affective dimension (male: p=0.025, female: p=0.007) and motivation dimension (male: p=0.001, female: p=0.001). There were no significant differences in cognitive dimension (male: p=0.062, female: p=0.127). According to our results which testified the fact that sport activity is one of the determinants for increased meaningfulness of life of undergraduates.

ventilatory threshhold
Opis:
Ventilatory threshold is one of the ways to measure cardiovasculatory fitness of the body. Therefore, in the present study it was decided to demonstrate which physiological parameters most accurately express the second ventilatory threshold (VAT2) depending on the cardiovasculatory fitness of different groups of athletes and untrained men. The study involved the following athletes: race walkers (n=14), weightlifters (n=16), powerlifters (n=16), runners (n=14), professional soccer players (n=13), amateur soccer players (n=16), martial arts (n=12), and untrained men (n=15). Subjects’ VAT2 and maximal load (ML) were recorded and at these levels were determined the value of achievable maximal power (P), oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), the ratio for oxygen uptake and heart rate (VO2/HR) and the rate-pressure produkt (RPP). It was shown that subjects were of similar age but different body mass (BM) and BMI. There were also differences between athlete groups at VAT2 and ML in relation to: P, VO2, VO2/HR (p<0.001) and RPP only at VAT2 (p<0.023). Reached HR values at VAT2 as well as at ML have not differed between the groups. There were also intergroup differences at VAT2 in terms of relative values: %VO2max (p<0.002), %Pmax(p<0.016), %VO2max/%HRmax (p<0.03). Relatively expressed %HRmax and %RPPmax reached at VAT2 did not differ between the two groups. Runners, professional soccer players and race walkers achieved the most favorable indicators of physical performance. It has been demonstrated that VAT2 besides P i %Pmax was best described by VO2, %VO2max and by VO2/HR and %VO2max/%HRmax, as well as by RPP. On the other hand HR and %HRmax, as well as %RPPmax are not useful in this regard. Furthermore it should be recognized that athletes in whose structure of the training occurred running of varying intensity achieved the highest physical fitness.

The map of candidate genes that can potentially affect physical fitness becomes larger every year, and they are associated with such aspects as respiratory and cardiovascular stability; body build and composition - especially muscle mass and strength; carbohydrate and lipid metabolism; response to training; and exercise intolerance. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the CA repeat polymorphism of the P1 promoter of the IGF1 gene and the structure of motor skills in the two groups of Polish young athletes in 2007-2009. In this study, 350 young sportsmen representing different sports disciplines were examined (age = 15.5 ± 0.5 years), by genotyping the IGF1 gene and determining the structure of motor skills using the International Physical Fitness Test (IPFT) battery. The multiple stepwise regression was used to determine the impact of the investigated motor skills on the indicator of the overall physical fitness, measured by the total score of the International Physical Fitness Test (IPFT). The analysis showed some regularity related to the character of the IGF1 gene polymorphism. It can be concluded that the two groups of young boys athletes practicing various sports disciplines (kinds of physical exercise) displayed similar associations between CA repeat polymorphism of the P1 promoter of the IGF1 gene and the level of motor effects. Our results suggest that this polymorphism may be a genetic marker of the physical performance phenotype. We demonstrated that CA repeat polymorphism of the P1 promoter of the IGF1 gene was associated with strength predispositions in the homozygous and non-carriers groups. In the group who were heterozygous it was speed-strength aptitudes.

It is generally believed that athletes experience pain in a different way than normally active individuals. Many scientists have confirmed the hypothesis that long-term physical activity can alter the perception of pain, i.e. athletes have a higher pain sensation and pain tolerance thresholds. The measurement of pain intensity is carried out using subjective methods based on verbal and non-verbal information, describing the clinical characteristics of pain. These psychological methods include the use of scales and questionnaires. Objective methods (thermal, mechanical and electrical) are used only to determine the pain sensation and pain tolerance thresholds. The specificity and prevalence of chronic pain syndromes have resulted in the increased number of studies on healthy and physically active individuals. It seems that determination of the effects of exercise on the perception of pain might help in the understanding of mechanisms of pain generation.

Several scales were used to assess the levels of coping with stress and pain of 97 Polish hard adventure mountain athletes (Mage = 30.50, SD = 9.45), who climb in winter using mountain ice axes, harnesses, hooks or ropes in high mountains, and 103 Polish soft adventure mountain athletes who summer hike in low mountains (Mage = 28.30, SD = 6.50). The results indicated significant differences between soft and hard adventure climbers in the ways climbers react to stress. The hard adventure climbing group had significantly higher means on the Preventive Coping, Proactive Coping, Task-Oriented Coping, Diverting Attention, Reinterpretation of Pain, Ignoring Pain, Coping Self-Statements and Behavioural Strategies than the soft adventure mountain athletes, but lower means on Emotion-Oriented Coping, Catastrophising and Praying/Hoping compared to the soft mountain athletes group. This study also examined the factor structure of the coping scales in the climbers’ samples. The results suggested that the coping scales contain the following three factors: Passive-Oriented Coping, Future-Oriented Coping and Appraisal-Oriented Coping. The extracted factors discriminate between soft and hard adventure mountain athletes. The hard adventure mountain athletes had significantly higher means on the Future-Oriented Coping and the Appraisal- Oriented Coping, and a lower mean on Passive-Oriented Coping than the soft mountain athletes group.

The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of selenium (Se) on the course of oxidative stress in trained athletes, on the basis of own former published studies and the reference of literature. In a number of references it was shown that the application of Se led to the diminishing of oxidative stress during the physical exercises in athletes. The application of Se to athletes − led to the increase of peroxidase glutathione the main selen − dependent enzyme. The fact of increased concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in blood serum, the main metabolite of lipid peroxidation can indirectly evidence about the intensity of physical endurance. This increase is significantly smaller in individuals taking exogenous antioxidative diet supplement containing Se. Moreover there is the evidence that oxidative muscles damage during physical effort could be diminished by compounds with antioxidative properties. Taking into consideration, the obtained results by many of authors empower to the conclusion that application of Se diminishes the degree of peroxidation of lipids in trained athletes.

Percentage of young sportspeople adjusting diet to training seems to be low, taking into account both established importance of such proceedings and awareness of sport nutrition strategies in this group. interestingly, more men than women do so. Group of respondents following well-documented iSSN recommendations is comparably modest. Perhaps the topic of nutrition strategies should be given more emphasis in schools and sport associations.

Background: Protein is a basic macronutrient supplied to the body via food intake and one of the key dietary elements of physically-active populations. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to analyze the protein intake of healthy adults undertaking regular muscle strength training. Material and methods: This study was conducted on 168 healthy adults: 84 women (25.9±6.1 years) and 84 men (25.5±5.4 years) performing strength training on a regular basis (~4 times a week). Protein intake was determined using a structured questionnaire to quantify the amount, source, and frequency of protein consumed. Results: The participants declared an average daily protein intake of 153.8±50.2 g, with women reporting lower intake (115.9±28.3 g) than men (184.8±42.2 g) (p<0.001). The main sources of protein were poultry meat, dairy products (e.g. milk, eggs), and protein supplements. 79% of participants declared using protein supplements, but no differences between women (79%) and men (80%) were found (p> 0.05). The amount of protein supplied by supplementation was, on average, 37.3±21.5 g with a lesser amount reported by women (28.6±13.2 g) than men (45.5±24.5 g) (p<0.001). 62.9% of participants consumed supplements in the form of whey protein concentrate and 42.6% took protein supplements immediately after training. Conclusions: The study participants consumed an excess amount of protein in comparison to the recommended daily intake. Protein supplementation accounted for a ¼ of daily protein intake, most often consumed immediately after training and generally in the form of whey protein concentrate. Nutritional education is necessary to align the eating habits and supplemental intake of physically active adults, relative to strength-training demands.

Objectives The aim of this work is to initiate or revive a scientific discussion on the impact of professional life on the parameters of human lifespan. Material and Methods Presented analysis is based on 8578 Polish elite or well-known person who died in 2001–2021. Results The results of the conducted analysis indicate that in the case of men the highest values of the median age at death were characteristic of freelancers (median [Me] ± quartile deviation [QD] 85.5±8.5 years), followed by scientists and academic teachers of the biological and medical specialty (Me±QD 84.0±7.5 years) and officers of power structures (Me±QD 83.5±8.5 years). Subsequently, the highest value of the median age at death was recorded for social activists (Me±QD 83.0±9.5 years), clergy (Me±QD 82.0±7.5 years) and scientists and academic teachers of specialties other than biological and medical (Me±QD 82.0±8.0 years). Significantly, at the very end of this list are athletes (Me±QD 77.0±9.0 years). Nevertheless, the results of the analysis confirm that professional athletes are characterized by higher median age at death compared to the general population. Analysis made only within athletes group demonstrated that the parameters of lifespan of athletes of endurance disciplines (Me±QD 78.0±8.0 years) are the most favorable compared to athletes of other disciplines, in particular in compare to team sports athletes (Me±QD 75.0±10.0 years) or combat sports athletes (Me±QD 75.0±7.1 years). Conclusions What is new and innovative in this paper is comparing the lifespan characteristics of athletes in comparison to widely represented group of other professions with higher socio-economic status. Unexpectedly, the lifespan of athletes occurred to be lower than for fast all other analyzed occupational groups, except mainly of entertainment musicians. Finally, the results presented in this paper emphasize the need to analyze the lifespan characteristics of athletes in a broader scope than only in relation to the general population.

The aim of the present study was to validate and implement a nutrition questionnaire to measure nutrition knowledge of university students, and athletes. Male, and female students (N = 476) voluntarily participated in the survey in 2019. Non-health related (n = 156), nutrition students (n = 163), and varsity athletes (n = 157) responded to the questionnaire, twice with 15 days’ interval between. In this study, new “General and Sport Nutrition Knowledge” (GSNK) and, two other "Short General Nutrition Knowledge” (SGNK) and, “Short Sport Nutrition Knowledge" (SSNK) questionnaires were used to determine the validation of the survey. One-way ANOVA, t Test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Cronbach’s α statistics were used to evaluate validity and reliability (p < .05). The Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, concurrent validity with two similar tools, and construct validity among the groups of students for nutrition knowledge were employed throughout the data analysis. Nutrition students outperformed in all nutrition knowledge sections. Respectively, athletes were the second, and non-nutrition related students were the third in sport nutrition (p < .05). With regard to general and total nutrition knowledge scores, female students performed significantly better than males (p < .01). Modified questionnaire was found to be valid, reliable, and suitable tool for Eurasian university students, and athletes. Results also illustrated that the intermittently nutrition educations are required for athletes, as it is recommended in related literature.

Materials and methods: The study involved students of a specialized sports school (n = 31, age: 16-17 years). The participants were divided into two groups: group 1 - 20 football players, group 2 - 11 water sports athletes (swimming). The level of sportsmanship is 1 category, Candidates and Masters of Sports. Tests applied: determination of the duration of an individual minute (IM), measuring of a 10 cm segment (SM), determination of simple hand-eye coordination (SHEyC), and simple hand-ear coordination (SHEaC), the technique of “Figures memorizing”, solution of 10 sums. Results: The results of the IM test reflect the prevalence of the earlier test completion. All participants indicated a lower value in 9th test of a segment measuring. The results of the SHEyC and SHEaC of the participants were similar. The results of all tests were less than 10 in the test of “Figures memorizing”. Football players revealed link between coordination and psychophysiological tests results, while swimmers revealed link between coordination and sensory type of tests. Conclusions: The carried out psychophysiological analysis of athletes' condition of team sports and water sports confirmed the possibility of applying these tests for selection. The results obtained reflect the specific influence of the sport on the athletes' bodies. These indicators demonstrate the increased requirements for spatial orientation, the importance of reaction to auditory stimuli and the increased ability of football players to control the surrounding space and control the game situation.
