Opis:
Non-identical particle correlations offer new methods of probing the dynamics of heavy-ion collision. In STAR we have performed a correlation analysis of pion-kaon and pion-proton systems for square root sNN = 130 AGeV Au+Au collisions. The results show that average emission space-time points of pions, kaons and protons are not the same. These results are studied with the help of heavy-ion collision models. The asymmetries appear as a consequence of space-momentum correlations produced by transverse radial expansion of the system. The effects of emission time differences, coming from the decay of resonances are also investigated, and found to explain only part of the asymmetry.

Measurement investigations have been carried out for commutator dc motor with internal asymmetries. Construction of considered motor enables to realize the breaking of one rotor coil and shorting of two groups of rotor coils. Each group contains three rotor coils. The basis of study were signals: current and voltage of field winding, current and voltage of armature winding and velocity of the rotor. The presented in this paper results of spectral analysis of signals create new possibilities for diagnostics of commutator dc motor.

Opis:
In Sardinian, Friulian, Rhaeto-Romance, Occitan (not considered in this work) and Franco-Provençal varieties spoken in peripheral Italian areas, the -i inflection is not totally eradicated but interacts with plural -s. The coexistence of -s and -i reflects syntactic constraints. Specifically, -i is in complementary distribution with -s or it combines with –s, giving rise to a duplicated lexicalization of plurality. In any event, it is specialized for a subset of the morpho-syntactic contexts. The distribution of -i generally involves the D domain, i.e. determiners and clitics. In some cases, -i is limited to the D elements. Different agreement systems on D and on N emerge, recalling partial or asymmetric agreement phenomena known in literature. Moreover, in the relevant varieties (-)i is in turn the inflection of the dative clitic; this suggests that (-)i is endowed with a slightly different content from plural -s, that, on the contrary, shows no connection with dative.

Opis:
Neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence convincingly implicates the left cerebral hemisphere in the representation of skilled movements (praxis) in right-handers. Compelling and consistent data on the organization of praxis in left-handed individuals has only recently started to emerge. This new evidence, again both from neuropsychology and neuroimaging, supports the notion that in left-handers the neural substrate of praxis skills is less asymmetric, i.e., it is more bilaterally organized. Up until recently, though, the neuropsychological literature on brain-damaged left-handers was often dominated by descriptions of more or less atypical cases and dissociations of functions observed in such individuals. Associations of deficits, linked to anatomic proximity rather than to a common cerebral specialization, were rarely found worth publishing and/or in-depth discussions. This paper first reviews some of the most relevant and/or well-known reports on representations of different categories of skilled manual gestures in right- and left-handers, with a view to support the idea that these skills are mediated by a common system. Then, based on neuroimaging evidence from healthy subjects, a few individuals with unusual organization of praxis are discussed. These disparate cases quite likely represent natural variation in functional asymmetries. It is yet to be determined whether the effect of a more bilateral organization of cognitive skills in this population is just due to a much higher incidence of atypical representations of functions or rather a general tendency for all left-handers to have their brains less asymmetrically organized.

The aim of this cross-sectional research was to quantify left–right dentoalveolar fluctuating (FA) and directional asymmetries (DA) in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and to assess the relationship between these asymmetries and the side, location, and severity of scoliosis. Materials and methods: The study group comprised of 60 females aged 12–16 years, with idiopathic scoliosis, and 54 healthy controls. Measurements were made with the use of digital caliper on full-mouth dental casts. The following variables were measured from each subject: a shift of the incisor midline, left and right incisor overjet, deviation of canine and buccal segment relation as well as maxillary and mandibular arch chords. The data were statistically analyzed with significance taken as p < 0.05. Results: Statistically significant differences in the mean shift of the incisor midline, buccal segment relation on the left and canine deviation on the left between the control group and the study group were detected ( p = 0.0419, p = 0.0.458 and p = 0.0204, respectively). FA of the midline deviation and canine deviation were statistically significantly higher for subjects with IS, compared to healthy controls ( p = 0.0315 and p = 0.0415, respectively). Neither direction of the curve nor apical vertebra’s location or apical translation significantly affected the magnitude of dentoalveolar asymmetries. Conclusions: Our results confirmed that bilateral asymmetries are a common feature of the young females’ occlusion. Individuals with IS show higher tendency to Angle Class II malocclusion, as well as higher FA of incisor midline discrepancy and canine deviation, compared to the controls.

The interregional relationship between the European Union and Latin America as well as the Caribbean in 2020 can be described as a ‘renewal’, given the relative loss of interest on both sides, which has prevailed in recent years. This relationship has a solid structure that has been built since the 1990s and it stands out from any other relationships between regions in the world. This study has four sections. The first one addresses the issue of the structure of the interregional relationship, which is characterised by asymmetry, but which does not fully represent the vertical-monolithic ‘North-South’ model. The second section focuses on the three strategic negotiating fronts that have been promoted: bilateral, subregional, and regional. The third section proposes the periodisation of the historical evolution of the relationship during its sixty years of existence, which went through four stages. Finally, in the conclusions I situate the interregional relationship in the framework of the ‘variable geometry’, imposed by the EU Strategy, which responds to the new ‘pragmatic’ approach to the EU’s foreign activities.

This article explores the critical theory of energy transformation within sociology, aiming to understand and enhance societal change. It investigates the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, analysing the socio-economic and geopolitical implications. Using empirical data, it reveals disparities between public discourse and actual emissions, unmasking power asymmetries and ‘green colonialism’ perpetuated by dominant nations and corporations. The study underscores the need for profound societal transformation rather than superficial energy shifts, advocating for the fusion of critical theory and capitalist critiques. It emphasises the importance of dismantling hegemonic control and fostering equitable energy transformation, calling for civic courage to challenge existing power structures. This work’s originality lies in integrating critical theory within sociology, offering insights into the socio-political dynamics influencing global decarbonisation efforts. Its value resides in a comprehensive analysis, unveiling interconnections between power, economics, and the environment in the context of energy transformation.

Opis:
The performance of learned manual gestures (praxis) and the production of speech are thought to depend on related neural processes. If this relationship is not invoked by an unknown, third variable then shifts in their laterality, including dissociations of these two functions, would be unlikely unless the sharing of some neural resources with other functions is advantageous. This could be the case in lefthanders, in whom actions requiring manual precision are controlled by their right hemispheres, and whose representations could attract the control of skilled gesture. Functional neuroimaging (fMRI) was used to study praxis and language functions. Their lateralization indices were measured in 56 consecutively tested lefthanders (28 females), with the mean age of 23.3±4.9 years (range 18.4 – 47 years), and an Edinburgh Handedness Inventory quotient between –100 and –55.6 (with the mean of –83.8±14.2). We show that atypical, bilateral organization or right-lateralization of praxis is more common than atypical organization/lateralization of language, observed, respectively, in 23 (41%) vs. 15 (26.8%) of cases. Specifically, we found: (a) seven cases (12.5%) of clear, and an additional three cases (5.4%) of less pronounced dissociations of atypically represented praxis from typically represented language; (b) 13 cases (23.2%) with atypically organized praxis also associated with atypically organized language, and (c) only two cases (3.6%) of rather strongly atypical lateralization of language, yet with quite typical lateralization of praxis. These outcomes are consistent with an idea that, in some lefthanders, the guidance of skilled manual actions can profit from tighter links with the right hemisphere, whose motor specialization is linked in this particular population to manual precision, but in general to attentional resources, visuo-spatial processing and even bimanual coordination. Because of the presumed links of praxis with productive language, such transfers are often, and unsurprisingly accompanied by the reorganization of the latter. Yet, the very rare cases of reversed language functions, without any pronounced shifts in representations of praxis, indicate that such a pattern of segregation – or inverse dissociation – of these two functions could be maladaptive.

Opis:
Atypical representations of praxis and language were studied in two forms and combinations: bilateral organization, and right lateralization, independently for each function; when the atypically represented praxis dissociates from typically lateralized language; and when both praxis and language have atypical forms. Direct differences between bilateral and right-lateralized representations were either marginal (for praxis), or nonexistent (for language). Because atypical organization of praxis is over twice as frequent as language in its atypical form, sample size might be an issue only for the latter (as atypical organization of language is very rare). Group averages in their dissociations, and associations in atypical forms, revealed the expected representations of the two functions. These outcomes indicate that merging the two atypical representations of praxis, or language, into one atypical group can reveal the critical aspects of their atypicality, including subcortical contributions, without seriously impeding correct interpretation of the essential underlying neural mechanisms.

This paper aims to analyse, through a contrastive approach, the asymmetries between Italian and Russian in the encoding of deictic reference. Some complex and divergent instances of deictic anchoring are discussed in relation to the notion of deictic centre (or zero-point, in Lyons’ terms). Different types of asymmetry can be identified according to structural and functional criteria: a) overcoding versus undercoding of deictic information (e.g., Italian tra and dopo versus Russian čerez); b) different internal articulation of the deictic reference (such as in the sequence of tenses, which is governed by mood and tense in Italian and solely by tense in Russian); c) the adoption of a different perspective in the deictic conceptualisation of space, time, and person (as in conversive predicates). All of these types of asymmetry seem to affect learners’ acquisition of L2. For this reason, a systematic analysis of errors committed in deictic reference can be a useful tool for second-language teaching.

The Russian National Security Strategy of 2015 aims at achieving autarky from Western influences on global security, the rule of law and global trade. Russia aims at attaining this by applying a holistic mix of military, political and economic means to weaken the West and to strengthen its own role as a global player. The Russian approach builds on a strategy of reflexive control which as such is an old method, but the outcome of the application of this approach results in hybrid warfare which as such is a new emerging concept of warfighting. This short article looks at one particular aspect of this Russian strategy, namely using Hybrid, or non-linear, Warfare against its Western direct neighbours in particular and the West in general. We will discuss the underlying cultural logic in Russia’s actions and will reflect on the impact of Russia’s utilization of the existing cultural asymmetry as a form of warfare in regard to the West. The examples used in this text are taken from the context of the conflicts of Ukraine and Syria, but have to be seen as constituting a part of an on-going global conflict aimed at NATO and the EU. The text builds on years of research within the hybrid threat, warfare respectively, context by both authors.

The aim of the article is to identify the main tendencies in the dynamics of interregional disparities in the level of socio-economic development in Russia during periods of economic growth and crisis. These trends have been identified on the basis of an analysis of the regional coefficient of asymmetry of key per-capita indicators (GDP, investment in fixed capital etc.) as well as indicators of spatial concentration in Russia and deviations from the average (for GDP, per capita GDP and investments) at the federal district and regional levels. The main factors driving the dynamics of these disparities were the economic crisis, government anti-crisis measures and measures of social support. Comparison of the level of interregional disproportions in Russia and abroad indicated that the differences between levels of socio-economic development at the federal level are comparable with differences in EU countries, but at the level of regions - with countries of the world.

Nasalski’s article entitled “Functions and dysfunctions of inclusive language with a particular focus on gender asymmetry in Polish” (Socjolingwistyka 2020), according to which grammatical gender systems, understood by the Author as (a)symmetries between masculine and feminine personal nouns, have negligible effect on women’s social situation as proved by different gender structure of Arabic, Persian and Polish, which does not correspond to women’s rights in the countries where these languages are spoken. Consequently, the Author questions the need to form new feminine nouns in Polish. The present paper points to many simplifications in Nasalski’s reasoning as well as his failure to refer to numerous studies which offer different points of view in the gender asymmetry debate. They concern various aspects of gender inequality in Arabic, the influence of language on our thinking and behaviour, and particularly the negative impact of gender biased language and advantages of using gender-fair language.

Opis:
Russia and China are terraforming the maritime environment as part of their warfare. In both cases the actions are illegal and the performance is offensive to its actual nature. In the case of China, the practice is construction of artificial islands in the South Chinese Sea and in the case of Russia it is about the infamous bridge built over the Kerch strait, Ukraine. Neither Russia nor China expects an armed conflict with the West in the near future. That is a reasonable assumption, which is weaponized at the political-strategically level. The attack of this weaponized situation is that the trust in the West. Primarily the EU (European Union) and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), is eroded for every day which these countries challenges the international system which the western democracies say that they present and defend. China and Russia offer their authoritarian systems as a replacement and there are a lot of pseudo-democratic or even out-right authoritarian regimes on the sideline watching this challenge unfold. The article highlights the difference for the NATO-countries in logic of practice when it comes to the political social field on one hand and the military political field on the other hand. The article uses material from a previously unpublished survey made on NATO-officers then attending courses at NATO Defense College (NDC).

Opis:
Users, who take advantage of the digital media, gradually lose their privacy. Internet corporations and national governments use the new technology to track people. It is impossible to avoid the surveillance. Common users will not cope with the fight with Internet giants and state administrations. Helen Nissenbaum and Finn Brunton recommend the defense against the domination of the strong ones. They present the strategy of the obfuscation, i.e. such activity while using the digital media, which will not allow to collect true information about the user, because the information noise will be formed around him. The aim of this article is to show the examples of the digital surveillance, and to present the reaction to this surveillance, namely, the strategy of the obfuscation.
Strategia zaciemniania jako odpowiedź na cyfrową inwigilację. Użytkownicy korzystający z mediów cyfrowych stopniowo tracą swoją prywatność. Przedsiębiorstwa internetowe i rządy państw wykorzystują nowe technologie do śledzenia ludzi. Nie jest możliwe uchronienie się przed inwigilacją. Zwykli użytkownicy nie poradzą sobie w konfrontacji z gigantami internetowymi i państwami. Helen Nissenbaum i Finn Brunton proponują obronę przed dominacją silnych.
