Opis:
The article presents the results of a psycholinguistic study of the concept JOY based on the materials of the Ukrainian Associative Dictionary by S. Martinek. The associative meaning of the word joy has been identified and a comparative analysis has been conducted, juxtaposing the obtained results with the lexicographic definitions and survey data provided by the sociological group “Rating”. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the major psychological theories of emotions and various linguistic approaches to studying emotions. All reactions of the conducted free associative experiment to the word-stimulus joy were classified according to the structures of knowledge representation, with their quantitative ratio determined. The research has shown that the emotion of joy is described by the hyperonyms emotion, feeling, mood. The core of the associative field of the concept JOY in Ukrainian linguaculture is formed by happiness, cheerfulness, merriment, satisfaction, pleasure. The most frequent characteristics of joy are great and sincere, and the most typical oppositions – sadness and sorrow. Joy is most frequently associated with laughter and smiling as an outward expression of emotion, with the colours yellow and white as well as with light and sun. Among the reasons for joy, life draws the greatest number of reactions while family, friends, home are of significant importance for Ukrainians.

Opis:
In this paper the author is trying to define the notions of semantics and style more accurately, and to establish a connection between them even though at first glance they are incompatible. Semantics as the study of meaning in linguistic terms according to empirical research into the structure and function of signs in natural languages reveals relations between them and the concepts they designate. Thus, in the context of structure, it explores lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, sentential meaning, and with respect to function descriptive meaning and associative meaning. Associative meaning covers several related types of meaning, dominated by the following three: stylistic, expressive and connota- tive. On this semantic plane style and semantics intersect, and partially overlap. Thus style, as the main generator of these three types of meaning, is directly correlated with semantics. Style and semantics are in a causal relationship: style is the cause (the generator of meaning), semantics the effect (the interpreter of meaning).

Opis:
The application of different language resources in professional communication reveals the role of cognition in information processing, the interpretive function of language in knowledge construction, and the interrelation of linguistic and extra-linguistic environments. The aim of the present paper is to examine the development of the language of science and the way it is influenced by history, technology, media, genre, and culture. Integrating cognitive approach and pragmatic analysis, the ways of meaning creation and meaning extension have been studied in the popular science texts. Creative thinking and imagination are considered responsible for innovative, creative and insightful thought in general, and, sometimes, for a much wider range of mental activities.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to show how much sense the author of a text can convey by using words in the appropriate context. There have been analysed the words: brain, eyes, hands and blood, used by Boris Akunin as names of departments in the Amphibian organization presented in the short story Planet Water. There have been also discussed the associative sequences which may arise when one idea is understood in terms of another. Constant comparing and perceiving the relation of similarity is extremely important in the process of understanding and interpreting reality.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie na podstawie kilku przykładów, jak wiele sensu może przekazać odbiorcom autor tekstu poprzez użycie określonych słów w odpowiednim kontekście. Analizie zostały poddane cztery jednostki językowe: mózg, oczy, ręce i krew, wykorzystane przez B. Akunina do nazwania departamentów w organizacji Amfibia w opowiadaniu Planeta woda. Przedstawiono również ciągi skojarzeniowe, które mogą powstawać, kiedy pojmujemy rzeczy w terminach innych rzeczy. Nieustanne porównywanie i dostrzeganie relacji podobieństwa jest niezwykle istotne w procesie rozumienia oraz interpretowania rzeczywistości.
