Opis:
Up to now only little attention was dedicated to the study of the trace fossils in the development of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin in the Orava region. Occasional trace fossils findings from the Central Carpathian Paleogene formations in the Orava and others regions were referred by Plička (1987). Other specialized works on trace fossils from these formations from the Orava region were not published. Study of trace fossils is strongly influenced by the existence of well exposed outcrops within individual formations. The best exposed outcrops are situated in the basal Borové Formation as well as in the higher parts of Paleogene sequences – mainly in the Zuberec Formation. This preliminary study shows a relatively rich diversity of trace fossils associations across the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin. We present new finds of trace fossils, within which we have classified 7 ichnogenera, 11 ichnospecies and 2 types of trace fossils, which were not closely systematically classified. Many trace fossils identified in the Orava region are typical for some palaeoenvironments, which are characterized by a specific lithology, nature of the substrate, dynamics of the environment, amount of nutrients and stability or fluctuations of oxygen in the bottom waters. The trace fossils assemblages reflect changes of depositional systems during the tectonic and sequence stratigraphic development of the basin. Early Eocene shallow-sea environment of the Borové Formation including the rocky coast, sandy dynamic littoral, transition - al and internal shelf zones are characterized by findings of traces of Entobia, Gastrochaenolites, Nummipera, Ophiomorpha and Skolithos. On the contrary, a significant deepening of the deposition environment during the Oligocene, documented by turbidite sedimentation of Zuberec and Biely Potok formations is characterised by findings of graphoglyptids ( Spirorhaphe, Nereites, Paleodiction, Protopaleodictyon, Megagrapton ) or traces of deposit feeders ( Arthrophycus, Chondrites, Planolites, Phycodes, Scolicia, Zoophycos).

Coal deposit "Katrishte" located in south-western Bulgaria, Ro = 0.34%, was subjected to geochemical study. By chromatographic and spectral methods, a variety of coal biomarkers in bitumen extract has been revealed. n-Alkane distribution pattern indicated at least two possible sources, lacustrine and terrestrial ones. The aliphatic fraction was strongly dominated by 16a(H)-kaurane and 16a(H)-phyllocladane, a proof for the presence of Pinales in coal-forming palaeoplant community. The kaurane prevalence over phyllocladane could indicate the herbaceous flowering plant contribution. The combination of sesquiterpenoids/diterpenoids pointed to Pinaceae and Araucariceae. As a biomarker assemblage peculiarity, the lack of isoprenoids, tricyclic diterpenoids, and pentacyclic triterpenoids could be indicated. Our data gave us ground to assume existence of bush moor with the presence of herbaceous flowering plants, and subordinate contributions of conifers and sedge-reeds to coal forming plant taxa of "Katrishte"

This article analyzes selected “speculative gestures” (Debaise, Stengers) in contemporary Polish performative arts which stage speculative ecologies. Speculative ecologies are different ways of thinking about ecology, alternative to the modern concept of nature as inert matter separated from humans and bereft of all agency. The analysis aims to unravel some nonanthropocentric modes of distributing agency between humans and nonhumans and ways of knowing they posit. The article focuses specifically on selcted hybrid projects emerging from a fusion of artistic strategies, scientific protocols and new technology design. Examples discussed here demonstrate how the initiators of such projects at the intersection of nature, culture and technology perform three types of speculative ecologies: by staging polyphonic assemblages (Lowenhaupt-Ting) as contingent encounters between human and nonhuman lifeways, by questioning received notions of natural environment, and by registering the agency of abiotic existents as proper ecological actors.

This presentation revolves around my box-assemblage, a three-dimensional body-themed artefact whose iconography is imbued with liturgical as well as profane tropes. I demonstrate how this artefact provides the female model and myself with an exilic space within which we not only re-assess concepts of alterity and subjectivity, but challenge the dominant role of male subjectivity in the western world. Its creation, a collaborative endeavour prompted by our desire to create an exclusive realm where libidinal desires are freed from societal inhibitions, starts off with our encounters in my studio. Parts of the latter’s space are then transferred into the artefact itself, together with our metonymic presences in the form of relics and simulacra of our bodies-in-pieces. The box-assemblage engenders an exilic space within itself, one characterised by liminality and in-betweenness; positioned between the sacred and profane, the tangible and intangible.By correlating her body with the divine, the box-assemblage gives this woman, as an embodiment of what I consider to be the “true other”, a trans-corporeal identity. Rather than controlling the other, the artefact provides an indeterminate space wherein the self encounters the other in a manner that initiates an equitable relationship, unhindered as much as possible by presumptive knowledge. This is aided by the box-assemblage’s underlying esthetics and dynamics which, while encouraging gender fluidity and disengagement from preconceived dogmas—a sort of reverse cognition—also enhances the experience of its deific symbolism. Ultimately, it allows us to speak through our bodies, transforming itself into a meta-narrative of our shared existences.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the construction of future scenarios in relation to conflict and communication technologies (CTs), on the basic of Delphi+ workshops and essay-writing sessions. Grounded in a theoretical reflection on the various forms of conflict—distinguishing between armed, grey zone and democratic conflict—in combination with theoretical reflections on the role of CTs in conflict, and the future imaginings of (communication) technologies, the analysis discusses six future imaginaries. Four of these future scenarios are negative as in a power take-over, the intensification of both an armed conflict, and of democratic conflict, and the harm inflicted on the environment and society in general. The two positive scenarios are the protective role of supranational organizations and cultural change. Together, these six scenarios form a map of how European experts are concerned about media/technology and military/technology assemblages, and how they place their hope in supranational political institutions and cultural change.

The dental anatomy of Candelariodon barberenai from the Dino donto saurus Assemblage Zone (Pinheiros-Chiniquá Sequence, Santa Maria Supersequence, late Ladinian–early Carnian) of south Brazil, is redescribed. Candelariodon was originally classified as Eucynodontia incertae sedis and our analysis recovered this taxon deeply nested within Probainognathia, as the sister taxon of Potheriodon plus Prozostrodontia. The lower postcanine dentition of Candelariodon has several apomorphies shared with Prozostrodon, Santacruzgnathus, Brasilodon/Brasilitherium, and some basal mammaliaforms (Morganucodon, Megazostrodon), such as a lingual cingulum with discrete cusps e and g and two distinct morphologies in the tooth row. The reinterpretation of Candelariodon as a probainognatian cynodont more derived than Probainognathus and the rich Brazilian fossil record document an important adaptive radiation of non-mammaliaform prozostrodontians and closely related forms prior to the origin of the mammaliaform clade.

Introduction. Giardia duodenalis (G. intestinalis) is a common protozoan causing gastrointestinal disorders in many species of mammals. The genus of Giardia has high molecular diversity. Dogs and cats, in addition to their typical infection with assemblages C, D and F, may be a reservoir of zoonotic assemblages (A and B). Objective. The aim of this study was a genetic characteristic of Giardia isolates of dogs and cats from the area of Wroclaw (Poland). Materials and method. A total of 128 and 33 faecal samples from dogs and cats, respectively, were analyzed by routine coprological methods. The animals were diagnosed on the presence of G. duodenalis antigens in faeces soluble with the use of SNAP Giardia (IDEXX Laboratories) immunosorbent assay. 27 DNA isolates of Giardia were subjected to molecular identification (PCR-RFLP). Results and conclusions. The prevalence of G. duodenalis was 21.1% (27/128) in dogs and 15.1% (5/33) in cats. In dogs, C assemblage was present in 18 (81%) positive stool samples, D assemblage in 2 (9%) samples, B assemblage present in one (4.5%), and mixed assemblages (C and D) occurred in one (4.5%) sample. F assemblage was found in 4 (80%) cats’ positive stool samples and A assemblage occurred in one case (20%). Confirmation of the presence of A and B zoonotic assemblages suggests that infected pets can be a threat to human health. This study describes for the first time the presence of mixed infections within host-specific C and D assemblages in dogs in Poland.

In the 2012/2013 season, the Polish–Egyptian Archaeological and Conservation Mission of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari (PCMA UW) continued work in a tomb (Tomb II) cut into the cliffs bordering the temple of Tuthmosis III from the west. The work focused on a shaft and two subterranean chambers (C and D), which yielded together more than 300 pieces of funerary linen and equipment. Despite the disturbed archaeological context, the finds constitute an important corpus of seldom studied and published Pharaonic textiles. Some of the textiles are of very high quality, up to 2 m in length and preserved with their original colors. Importantly, they portray characteristic features of Pharaonic Egyptian textiles. Several pieces have inscriptions, including one with a fragmentary cartouche.

A corpus of funerary linen was found in the 2012/2013 season in one of the rock tombs cut in the cliff bordering the Tuthmosis III temple platform in Deir el-Bahari during the work of the Polish–Egyptian Archaeological and Conservation Mission of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. It derives from unidentified burials and from disturbed archaeological contexts and most probably was deposited in the tomb in modern times. It constitutes an important addition to the known body of funerary linen from the Third Intermediate/beginning of the Late Period, as attested by a cartouche of Taharqo and other elements of the burial assemblages. The discovered textiles provide important information about the funerary functions of linen, as well as technical aspects of Pharaonic textiles.

Sixty-eight brachiopod species are reported from the upper part of the Skały Formation at Miłoszów (Łysogóry Region of the Holy Cross Mts., central Poland) on the basis of over 2,200 specimens. The fauna is Early to early Middle Givetian in age (timorensis to rhenanus/varcus conodont zones) and thus predates the Middle Givetian Taghanic Bioevent. One new genus and three new species are described. Leiocyrtia Baliński gen. nov. (type species: Leiocyrtia rara Baliński gen. et sp. nov.; Spiriferida, Cyrtiidae) is characterised by a non-costate shell with prominent sulcus and fold and capillate microornament. Undispirifer sidoniae Halamski and Baliński sp. nov. is characterised by transverse shells and dense ribbing. Moravilla andreae Baliński and Halamski sp. nov. is characterised by relatively coarse radial capillate ornament and is the first representative of the genus outside the type species from the Givetian of Moravia. The most abundant species are: Spinulicosta cf. spinulicosta, Antirhynchonella linguiformis, Pentamerelloides davidsoni, Peratos beyrichi, Plectospira ferita, Spinatrypa wotanica (confirmed to belong to that genus and not to Spinatrypina), Ambothyris sp., and Echinocoelia dorsoplana. ‘Spirifer’ quadriplicatus Sandberger and Sandberger, 1856, a rare species known from Miłoszów and the Rhenish Massif, is an orthide and belongs to Teichertina. The relationship between Skenidioides polonicus and S. cretus, formerly understood as anagenesis, is re-interpreted as budding cladogenesis. Davidsonia septata is reported as an epizoan on rugosan corals, a relationship never previously observed in representatives of that genus. Brachiopods represent different palaeoecological groupings, from relatively shallow-water taxa (BA3, globetum) to deep-water mud-dwelling ones (BA5, deeper brachiopodetum). The richest beds are M1-IIa (28 brachiopod species), M3-7 (23 species), and M0-9 (22 species). Eighteen species described here were not known previously in the Holy Cross Mountains, so the corrected total number of brachiopod species from the Middle Devonian of the Łysogóry Region is 140.

The taxonomie value of phytolith assemblages and their degree of variability within different species of the same genus is still an undervalued issue in the botanical range of phytolith studies. However the understanding of grass phytolith variance and its implications to plant systematics is doubtless. In the present study phytoliths of the lateral shoots (leaves) of nine, globally distributed Poa species (Pooideae - Poaceae) are described. Phytoliths were recovered from Poa specimens by the dry ashing technique. Altogether 6223 disarticulated phytoliths were counted (approximately 500-700 phytoliths per species) in 54 plant samples, which cover six shoots of nine species. Not only the relative frequency of each morphotype was calculated, but measurements were conducted to determine the biogenic silica content of Poa lateral shoots. A phytolith reference collection for the nine selected species of a worldwide importance was also compiled. The description of the most significant phytolith morphotypes and their taxonomic relationships are given here. Results suggest that the biogenic silica content of the Poa lateral shoots was determined to be relatively high within all nine species. Phytolith assemblage data was subjected to multivariate statistical analyses (e.g., CA and PCA) in order to find differences and similarities among the nine Poa species. Results show that the two closely related Poa of the P. pratensis species group, namely the P. pratensis and P. angustifolia, only slightly differ from the other Poa species if we consider their rondel-trapeziform short cells (SC) phytolith frequencies.

All prospected and cleaned structures proved to be built of local ashlar sandstone straight on solid ground or bedrock. All kinds of mortar and plaster was used for building construction. Flat stones of similar dimensions were carefully selected. Buildings were neatly designed with entrances always in the middle of the front wall. Archaeological sites of Al-Sabbahiya, Um al-Dakhan, Matitah, Kharaib el-Desht with a density of different historical structures dating from the mid- and late Islamic period are found in the southern regions of Failaka Island.

he aim of this paper is to describe new, non-anthropocentric forms of non-fictional nature writing that can also be interpreted as life-nature (autoBIOgraphical) writing. The author discusses the works of Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing (anthropologist), Urszula Zajączkowska (biologist), Helen Macdonald (historian of science) and Jolanta Brach-Czaina (philosopher) in order to show their biopoetical writing strategies: immersion, rhizomatic, assemblage, and tentacularity. In her analysis, the author defines the strategies by using the concepts of Passage – understood in broader terms rather than as a trope of urban writing and reading – and flaneurie, which can be a non-urban experience, that represents the opposite of laboratory. This paper will also discuss the possibilities and the limits of non-anthropocentrism in literature.

Opis:
Three different approaches are formulated to obtain the bounds of the effective elastic moduli of nanoparticle-reinforced composites based on the CSA and the interface stress model. It is found that the effective bulk modulus can be obtained by all three different approaches but the effective shear modulus can be obtained only by the energy approach. The bounds of the effective bulk modulus coincide and depend only on the interface bulk modulus, while those of the effective shear modulus are distinct and depend on two interface elastic constants. Furthermore, limit analysis discloses that the bounds of the effective bulk modulus of nanoparticles coincide but deviate from the bulk modulus of particle in the classical case, and the bounds of the effective shear modulus are distinct in contrast to the effective bulk modulus of nanoparticles or both effective moduli of conventional composites.

Opis:
The major impacts on aquatic ecosystems worldwide caused by land use lead to changes in their natural conditions and limitation of water use for various needs. This paper presents the results of the study of the physical and chemical parameters and macroinvertebrate assemblage in the White Drin River (or: the Drim River, Alb. the Drini i Bardhë River) basin, the largest in Kosovo. Macroinvertebrate sampled at 11 sites in the river resulted in 5946 collected benthic organisms, which in taxonomic terms belong to 12 orders and 51 families. Of the total number of organisms, 72.28% were Insects, 25.39% Amphipoda crustaceans and 2.33% were Annelide worms and Mollusk. The used biotic indices Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP), Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT), average score per taxon (ASPT) and Stroud Water Research Center (SWRC) classify water quality in excellent category in the sampling site S1 near the source of the White Drin River, whereas in other sampling sites, as a result of pollution, water quality varies on category II–IV. The Pearson's correlation analyses shown that the physical and chemical parameters affect the water quality and the composition of macroinvertebrates. Our results show that the parameters that adversely affect the BMWP, EPT and ASPT biotic indices as well as the Shannon–Wiener, Mergalef and Menhinik diversity indices are: pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total suspended solids (TSS), nitrates (NO3) and chlorides (Cl). We can conclude that the anthropogenic impact on White Drin basin affects the physical, chemical and biological parameters of the water therefore these parameters should be constantly included in Biomonitoring and Management plans for water resources in Kosovo.

A unique dinosaur assemblage from the Cretaceous beds of western Inner Mongolia preserves geologic and paleontologic data that clearly delineate both the timing and mechanism of death. Over twenty individuals of the ornithomimid Sinornithomimus dongi perished while trapped in the mud of a drying lake or pond, the proximity and alignment of the mired skeletons indicating a catastrophic mass mortality of a social group. Histologic examination reveals the group to consist entirely of immature individuals between one and seven years of age, with no hatchlings or mature individuals. The Sinornithomimus locality supports the interpretation of other, more taphonomically ambiguous assemblages of immature dinosaurs as reflective of juvenile sociality. Adults of various nonavian dinosaurs are known to have engaged in prolonged nesting and post hatching parental care, a life history strategy that implies juveniles spent considerable time away from reproductively active adults. Herding of juveniles, here documented in a Cretaceous ornithomimid, may have been a common life history strategy among nonavian dinosaurs reflecting their oviparity, extensive parental care, and multi−year maturation.

The study was carried out from the beginning of June to the end of July 2005 in the Krasiborska Kępa reserve (UTM VV56; 53.848°N, 14.370°E). Three research plots were established, representing various types of use of reedy areas: an unused reedy area, a reedy area mown in summer, and an area mown in winter. Beetles were collected in Barber traps with ethylene glycol as a preservative liquid. Seven traps were set up in each examined habitat. In total 1,145 specimens belonging to 35 species were caught. The relatively small area presented three different carabid assemblages, differing in species richness, abundance, dominance structure and ecological preferences. The highest species richness and abundance, as well as the largest representation of endangered stenobiontic hygrophilous bog species (Trechus rivularis, Carabus clathratus, Carabus menetriesi, Bembidion fumigatum, Blethisa multipunctata, and Oodes helopioides), were observed in the  periodically flooded fen which was mowed in the winter.
W wyniku badań przeprowadzonych w czerwcu i lipcu 2005 roku, na trzech stanowiskach o charakterze torfowiskowym w północno-wschodniej części rezerwatu Karsiborska Kępa zebrano 1145 osobników należących do 35 gatunków. Na względnie małym terenie występują trzy różnych zgrupowania biegaczowatych. Różnice polegają na bogactwie gatunkowym, liczebności, strukturze dominacji i preferencjach ekologicznych. Największe bogactwo gatunkowe i liczebność, oraz największa reprezentacja przyrodnicza cennych stenobiontycznych higrofilnych torfowiskowych gatunków (Trechus rivularis, Carabus clathratus, Carabus menetriesi, Bembidion fumigatum, Blethisa multipunctata, Oodes helopioides) znajdowała się na stanowisku 3 – okresowo zalewanym torfowisku niskim, koszonym w okresie zimowym.

Detrital zircon age of the conglomerates from the Upper Silesian (USB) and Małopolska (MB) (S Poland) have been investigated to compare their deposition age and possible provenience. The size and poor sorting of the lithoclasts reflect a short transportation, with deposition close to the sourceland. The Late Ediacaran conglomerate of the Potrójna IG 1 and Raciechowice 1 boreholes (USB) reveal a good match between the ages known from the local basement explored by boreholes. Detrital zircon clusters in a range of 579-585 Ma and 628-638 Ma and of 707 Ma are consistent with the distributions of Cadomian magmatism within the nearest orogenic belt or those identified elsewhere within the Brunovistulicum. In case of the conglomerate deposited in the Batowice 2 borehole (MB), the zircon clusters of 532, 551, 594 and 649 Ma, accompanied with a pre-Svecofennian group peaked at 2071 Ma, and the lack of Sveconorvegian population may document a tectono-sedimentary interaction between the Baltica's southern margin and the Gondwanan Cadomian and Late Cadomian basement during Early Paleozoic time. This conglomerate bed was deposited later, after the Early Ordovician, then docking of Małopolska Block - Baltica was probably completed.

This auto-ethnographic description of the experiences in the development of the teaching and learning approach, at the postgraduate level, introduces the impact of the community of practice in the development of the learning processes in South Africa, with an international view. The principles of community of practice are outlined and the theoretical grounding is provided in terms of the notion of assemblage theory, the definitions of fundamental and derivative epistemic authority, as well as the assemblage boundary and the personal intents of the community of practice members. The theoretical grounding is then applied through several iterations of the community of practice between 2006 and present. The adaptive nature of the community of practice as an assemblage and the function as a sociology-of-knowledge system are outlined.

The presented paper analyses the occurrence of dragonflies in the left-bank (Polish) part of the Bug River valley between Włodawa and Kodeń (65 km of the river course, 51°32’–51°55’ N, 23°31’–23°38’ E). In total, 40 species were recorded. The key sites for dragonflies were oxbow lakes, the Bug River and its tributaries. Species diversity was found to be relatively low due to a lack of peat lands and dystrophic waters, as well as strong astatism of small water bodies. The effects of strong water pollution in the Bug River were evident. The species composition of dragonflies was typical, but densities of Gomphidae (particularly Ophiogomphus cecilia ) suggested an adverse state of the environment. This is caused by surface runoffs of agricultural wastewater in Poland, but also by strongly polluted rivers in the territory of Ukraine. The study includes a review of earlier research conducted in the upper course Bug River valley. Considering both the old and new data, 54 dragon fly species were recorded in the Middle Bug River valley between Gołębie and Kodeń (246 km of the river course at the border of Poland with Ukraine and Belarus). It is an area of high importance for the protection of dragonflies in terms of species diversity and species assemblages.
Analizowano występowanie ważek w lewobrzeżnej (polskiej) części doliny Bugu pomiędzy Włodawą i Kodniem (65 km biegu rzeki, 51°32’–51°55’ N, 23°31’–23°38’ E). Wykazano 40 gatunków. Kluczowe dla występowania ważek były: starorzecza, rzeka Bug i jej dopływy. Stosunkowo małe bogactwo jakościowe odonatofauny wynikało z małego zróżnicowania siedlisk, zwłaszcza z braku torfowisk i wód dystroficznych oraz z silnego astatyzmu drobnych zbiorników.

The article discusses Drew Daniel’s theory of the melancholy assemblage. By juxtaposing Daniel’s appropriation of Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas with Manuel De Landa’s discussion of the assemblage theory, it addresses the issue of space which, in spite of being one of the parameters of an assemblage, is absent from Daniel’s The Melancholy Assemblage. Therefore, the first question asked in the present article concerns the reason behind Daniel’s neglect of the spatial dimension of an assemblage. The second issue discussed in the article concerns the tension between forces of territorialization and deterritorialization in a melancholy assemblage. By approaching the issue from the vantage point of the neobaroque theory, the article argues that Daniel’s Renaissance melancholy assemblages already touch upon the problematic relation between performance and essence that would find its full manifestation during the Baroque.

The detailed sedimentological study of the 150-m-thick Muschelkalk succession, deposited on a small (~200 by 80 km), morphologically diverse Upper Silesian carbonate platform during four major marine-transgressive pulses of the Tethys Ocean, enhanced the understanding of the depositional history, palaeogeography, and facies distribution. A total of thirty-five lithofacies types were identified, described and interpreted in terms of depositional settings. These different lithofacies represent various shallow-marine environments along the platform transect, from peritidal to offshore areas. The vertical and lateral organization of the lithofacies delineated was caused by the interplay of platform morphology, third-order eustasy and the long-term tectonic evolution of the area. Accordingly, the carbonate system studied is a good example of the influence of large-scale processes on the facies architecture of carbonate platforms. In general, all of the four Transgressive Systems Tracts are characterized by similarity in lithofacies composition and vertical succession and by minor lateral change, indicating only limited influence of the three large-scale factors mentioned on lithofacies development and distribution during transgressions. In contrast, each of the four associated Highstand Systems Tracts comprises an individual (unique) lithofacies assemblage displaying substantial regional and local variation, which indicates that the filling of accommodation space during highstands strongly depended on the extrinsic processes.

Remote sensing studies published up to now show that the performance of empirical (band-ratio type) algorithms in different parts of the Baltic Sea is highly variable. Best performing algorithms are different in the different regions of the Baltic Sea. Moreover, there is indication that the algorithms have to be seasonal as the optical properties of phytoplankton assemblages dominating in spring and summer are different. We modelled 15,600 reflectance spectra using HydroLight radiative transfer model to test 58 previously published empirical algorithms. 7200 of the spectra were modelled using specific inherent optical properties (SIOPs) of the open parts of the Baltic Sea in summer and 8400 with SIOPs of spring season. Concentration range of chlorophyll-a, coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and suspended matter used in the model simulations were based on the actually measured values available in literature. For each optically active constituent we added one concentration below actually measured minimum and one concentration above the actually measured maximum value in order to test the performance of the algorithms in wider range. 77 in situ reflectance spectra from rocky (Sweden) and sandy (Estonia, Latvia) coastal areas were used to evaluate the performance of the algorithms also in coastal waters. Seasonal differences in the algorithm performance were confirmed but we found also algorithms that can be used in both spring and summer conditions. The algorithms that use bands available on OLCI, launched in February 2016, are highlighted as this sensor will be available for Baltic Sea monitoring for coming decades.

The purpose of this paper is a straightforward one: to step back from the increasing use of assemblage in recent debates and to attempt to take stock of what assemblage thinking offers to humanities. I relate the answer to this question to the title concept of “sewn-together” humanities, which has a tentative and ad hoc character. The starting point is the analysis of the video installation realized by Angela Melitopoulos and Maurizio Lazzarato, entitled Assemblages, which relies upon the concept of assemblages proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Assuming that research practices and theories combine assemblages of ideas of both abstract and practical nature, I analyse examples of the application of assemblage thinking and action at the levels of a method, methodology, and onto-epistemology, tracing the goals that humanities achieve by means of this approach to research.

It is likely that the beginnings of geological museology in Poland should be associated with the collecting movement of all kinds of souvenirs and wonders of nature, often referred to as curiosities or antiquity. The article mentions all significant collectors of geological exhibits, including Anna Jabłonowska as one of the main figures in the beginnings of museology in Poland. The present study investigates the influence of seasonal dynamics on macrobenthic assemblages in four seasons of 2017—2018 from the central sector of Indian Sundarbans which is under the constant threat of climate change. Besides taxonomic analysis, a traitbased approach has also been applied to assess the change in their ecosystem functioning. The maximum species density (11675 ± 11883.31 ind. m−2) was observed during the spring season which declines considerably in the monsoon season (5875 ± 6224.08 ind. m−2). A total of 95 macrobenthic taxa were recorded from Sundarbans and they were dominated by families like Capitellidae, Donacidae, Magelonidae, Nereididae, Paraonidae and Spionidae. Overall, polychaetes have shown higher taxonomic and functional variation than other groups. Opportunistic polychaete species have shown a prominent compositional shift during post-monsoon seasons. Both the univariate and multivariate analyses have shown a significant relation between macrobenthic composition and environmental parameters. SIMPER has depicted that environmental parameters made the station 4 unique for several types of molluscs like Acteocina estriata, Stenothyra deltae and Meretrix meretrix during spring. Trait percentages also showed a seasonal succession pattern and among the trait categories, burrowers and deposit feeders dominated the estuary. A gradual increase in suspension feeders in spring has been noticed. RLQ approach with fourth-corner analysis was used to unravel the relationship between traits and environmental parameters. Hence, the present study provided a comprehensive idea about the species composition along with their trait categories from such a dynamic habitat. That could be the first stepping stone for a long term monitoring of macrobenthic assemblages from this largest delta on earth.

Periodic inundation by sand is a very common feature of rocky coasts throughout the world. Even so, there have been few direct observations or experiments to investigate the role of sediments on intertidal rocky shores. We designed a field experiment in Mazatl´an Bay, Mexico, to test the initial impact and subsequent recovery of intertidal macrobenthic assemblages exposed to sand burial at two sites of varying wave exposure. Both sites supported different natural assemblages. Treatment plots for the addition of sediment and control plots (50×50 cm), separated by at least 1.5 m, were randomly placed across the mid-water tidal level. The initial response of the resident macrobenthos and the subsequent recolonization was monitored over a period of 95 days. The main effect of sediment deposition at both sites was mortality and removal of biota due to smothering. The recovery process was rapid and may in part have been the result of the mechanism by which the small, disturbed patches were recolonized. Most of the invertebrates colonized the patches as adults; several seaweeds exhibited vegetative growth as the major mechanism of colonization (e.g., Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, 1753, Amphiroa valonioides Yendo, 1902 and Chaetomorpha antennina (Borgensen) Kutzing, 1849). The rate of recovery varied between the sites, however. Recovery of species numbers proceeded quickly at the sheltered site (day 7), but took 95 days at the exposed site. In contrast, biomass reached control levels by day 45 at the sheltered site, but already by day 15 at the exposed site. By day 95, the assemblages recovered to 83.5% and 81% similarity with the controls at the sheltered and exposed sites respectively. Although differences in wave exposure could be very important in determining the different patterns of recovery at both sites, other biological processes may also play an important part.

Przedmiotem artykułu są zmiany zachodzące w badaniach nad przestrzeniami kulturowymi wywołane kryzysem teoriopoznawczym w obszarze badań nad kulturą i przebiegające równolegle z dyskusjami dotyczącymi nowych teorii miejskich. W artykule postawiono cztery tezy: 1) nauka poznaje i performuje przestrzenie; 2) studia kulturowe rozwijają zwrot przestrzenny, zwrot topograficzny i zwrot geograficzny; 3) zwrot przestrzenny uaktywnia pułapki w badaniach transdziedzinowych; 4) urbanizacja jest planetarną praktyką kulturalizacji przestrzeni.
This paper explores and discusses the experimental, critical and self-reflexive changes in the fields of cultural spaces research such as cultural studies, cultural geography and urban studies. It seeks to contribute to current debates on space in the context of epistemological crisis in cultural studies and contemporary urban theory. The key thesis are: 1) Science explores and performs cultural spaces; 2) Cultural studies develop spatial turn, topographical turn and geographical turn; 3) Spatial turn activates trick questions in trans-field research; 4) Urbanisation is a planetary practice of culturalisation. Based on a review of epistemological search on urban space, this article considers how researches have attempted to situate knowledge by suggesting different concepts of space and of the urban. It is note that these concepts often struggle to provide meaningful estimates of important factors of urbanisation. This implies that whilst the study of cultural space remains difficult, epistemologies and methodologies of cultural urban studies can be infiltrate by set at variannce disciplines.

A new dataset of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Adventfjorden (tributary fjord of Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen) was compared with the results of a study conducted by Zajączkowski et al. (2010) in Hornsund (West Spitsbergen). According to Nilsen et al. (2016), Atlantic water inflow to the Isfjorden Trough occurs more readily than to anywhere else along the shelf of Spitsbergen; thus, we compared the foraminiferal assemblages of the outwash Adventfjorden fjord, located in the Isfjorden system, with glacial Hornsund, located in southwest Spitsbergen. Despite the juxtaposition of Adventfjorden and Hornsund the data revealed varying impacts of shelf-transformed water (STW) on the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Outer and central Adventfjorden was dominated by Adercotryma glomerata, Recurvoides turbinata and Spiroplectammina sp., reflecting the presence of STW, while abundant Melonis barleeanus in the central area of the fjord indicated a large flux of unaltered organic matter. Only the head of the fjord was dominated by the glaciomarine taxa Cassidulina reniforme and Elphidium clavatum. Foraminiferal fauna characteristic of STW-influenced environments (i.e., Nonionellina labradorica and R. turbinata) were also observed in outer Hornsund. However, the glacier-proximal taxa E. clavatum and C. reniforme were dominant throughout the fjord, demonstrating the impacts of meltwater and high sedimentation. Therefore, it is likely that in Hornsund, glacial impact is a major environmental factor, which is stronger than the influence of STW.

Opis:
Foraminiferal assemblages from the neritic environment reveal the palaeoecological impact of nutrient types in relation to shore distance and sedimentary setting. Comparatively proximal siliciclastic settings from the Boreal Domain (Brora section, Eastern Scotland) were dominated by inner−shelf primary production in the water column or in sea bottom, while in relatively seawards mixed carbonate−siliciclastic settings from the Western Tethys (Prebetic, Southern Spain), nutrients mainly derived from the inner−shelf source. In both settings, benthic foraminiferal assemblages increased in diversity and proportion of epifauna from eutrophic to oligotrophic conditions. The proximal setting example (Brora Brick Clay Mb.) corresponds to Callovian offshore shelf deposits with a high primary productivity, bottom accumulation of organic matter, and a reduced sedimentation rate for siliciclastics. Eutrophic conditions favoured some infaunal foraminifera. Lately, inner shelf to shoreface transition areas (Fascally Siltstone Mb.), show higher sedimentation rates and turbidity, reducing euphotic−zone range depths and primary production, and then deposits with a lower organic matter content (high−mesotrophic conditions). This determined less agglutinated infaunal foraminifera content and increasing calcitic and aragonitic epifauna, and calcitic opportunists (i.e., Lenticulina). The comparatively distal setting of the Oxfordian example (Prebetic) corresponds to: (i) outer−shelf areas with lower nutrient input (relative oligotrophy) and organic matter accumulation on comparatively firmer substrates (lumpy lithofacies group) showing dominance of calcitic epifaunal foraminifera, and (ii) mid−shelf areas with a higher sedimentation rate and nutrient influx (low−mesotrophic conditions) favouring potentially deep infaunal foraminifers in comparatively unconsolidated and nutrient−rich substrates controlled by instable redox boundary (marl−limestone rhythmite lithofacies).

Gogia parsleyi Zamora sp. nov. and Gogia sp. are described from two different echinoderm assemblages, both from the middle Cambrian of the Murero Formation (Iberian Chains, NE Spain). Gogia parsleyi is reconstructed and described on the basis of fifteen complete or partial specimens and numerous isolated plates. It is characterised by spiralled brachioles, simple epispires, sometimes covered by stereomic domes or tiny cover plates, and by thecal plates arranged in subregular circlets. This gogiid population comprises juveniles, advanced juveniles and mature individuals. The material was found in the upper part of the Murero Formation (upper Caesaraugustian–lower Languedocian). Gogia sp. is represented by two almost complete specimens and several isolated plates from the lower part of the Murero Formation (lower Caesaraugustian). The genus Gogia was first described in Western Gondwana from the Languedocian (upper middle Cambrian) of France, but the material from Spain is older and represents the oldest record of this genus in Gondwana, suggesting an early migration from Laurentia. The gogiids are well preserved in two echinoderm Lagerstätten, which, together with other echinoderms, comprise the majority of the fossil fauna. Both levels are derived from obrution deposits produced in calm and open marine conditions, sometimes affected by sporadic storms. Their holdfast morphology suggests that these gogiids were low−tier suspension feeders, living attached to trilobite fragments in a soft, muddy environment.

Opis:
The article is a polemical attempt to rethink the role of the logistics sector in the most important transformations of the contemporary urban fabric. Despite many indications proving its influence as a crucially important condition for the emergence of a post-industrial city as well as a catalyst for further, equally significant transformations, the revolution in logistics remains one of the most marginalized events in the field of critical urban studies. One of the reasons for such neglect is based in the dominant perspective on urbanization which, focusing mainly on the issue of agglomeration and Western-based urban phenomena, tends to ignore other, more peripheral urbanization processes. These include the global spread of circulation infrastructure, which is an indispensable condition for the materialization of a Lefebvrian urban society. Contrary to that perspective, logistical networks will be treated here as one of the most important patterns of the production of space, contributing to the proliferation of the urban in non-urbanized areas and providing justifications for new, assemblage-oriented ontologies of the city.

Slope deposits developed on calcareous sandstone and limestone formations in the eastern part of the Podhale Basin (Carpathians) were studied. In total, the analysis included fifteen profiles of such sediments, which revealed the presence of abundant malacofaunas comprising 39 mollusc species. Five faunistic assemblages differing in species composition and structure were defined in the material studied. Individual assemblages correspond to different climatic and environmental conditions, thereby making it possible to interpret the features of the sedimentary environments and specify the age of the deposits. Faunas with Pupilla loessica and Pupilla sterri containing species typical of loess formations are characteristic of deposits from the coldest phase of the last Glacial period (MIS 2). A fauna with Vertigo genesii, with a large proportion of cold-loving and moisture-loving taxa, is typical of the Younger Dryas. Associations that are dominated by shade-loving species, with Discus ruderatus and Discus perspectivus, correspond to the early and middle Holocene respectively. The investigations show that malacological analysis can be successfully applied to the research into slope deposits, enabling both the depositional conditions and the age of the sediments to be determined.

The paper presents results of pollen analysis of organic sediments from the site Katowice 2. Six local pollen assemblage zones identified in the section represent the youngest part of Mazovian Interglacial. The pollen spectra of the basal part of the section display some changes indicative of intra-interglacial cooling, well recorded in many profiles of this interglacial in Poland. The forest landscape was subsequently dominated by hornbeam-fir communities which were replaced later by those of pine forests. In turn, taxa of thermophilous aquatic plants, represented by pollen Trapa and microsporangia Azolla filiculoides and Salvinia evidence of lacustrine environment. The results of pollen analysis of sediments from the Katowice site and those hitherto obtained from some other localities in western and central part of the Polish Uplands (Malice, Raków, Wielki Bór, Konieczki i Białe Ługi) became the basis for distinguishing seven regional pollen zones for this area. As compared to pollen succession from Podlasie and eastern Poland, the most significant differences concern the course of pollen curves of Carpinus and Abies and the sequence of their pollen culmination.

Many species that are in danger of extinction require human support in the form of captive-breeding programs to help maintain their populations in the wild. When breeding in captivity, it is important to select breeding pairs that will create the most genetically diverse progeny. Based on the polymorphism of their microsatellite loci, breeding pairs of diploid land animals have been successfully selected. In this theoretical paper, we asked how to adapt this technique to the selection of spawner pairs for restocking populations of partially tetraploid fish species. To test our calculation techniques, we used actual data on the polymorphism of the loci of captured whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). The data enabled calculations showing which spawner pairs would create the most genetically diverse cohort of offspring if they were bred. Themethod presented in the paper can be used for breeding fish in aquaculture conditions to help conserve species.

This paper reports the results of X-ray diffraction quantitative mineralogical studies of the clay-rich Middle Jurassic sedimentary rocks from Gnaszyn, central Poland and their palaeoenvironmental interpretation. The palaeoenvironmental interpretation is aided by the fact that the sediments have not been significantly altered by diagenesis. The mineral composition is uniform throughout the succession: quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, calcite, gypsum, anhydrite, pyrite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and glauconite. The clay assemblage is dominated by illite, which alone accounts for about 20 wt% of the total mineral content. Kaolinite amounts usually <10 wt% and chlorite and glauconite occur in subordinate quantities. The clay mineral assemblage is largely of detrital origin and indicates rather cool and/or dry climatic conditions favouring mechanical erosion of the source rocks.

The presented paper is based on my study related with my master’s thesis entitled Palaeolithic of Asia in the light of the international series of the conferences Suyanggae and Her Neighbours. This article focuses on presentation of the results of research concerning one of the biggest Paleolithic site in South Korea. The Suyanggae site is located at Aegok-ri, Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang County, Chungbuk Province, by the South Han River. This site was investigated by Chungbuk National University Museum led by Professor Lee Yung-jo, and the work is still ongoing. It is one of the biggest Palaeolithic site in East Asia. This complex contains over 100.000 lithic artifacts, excavated from three Palaeolithic localities (I, III, VI). The continuity of flint processing is shown in several cultural layers of each locality of Suyanggae complex, started from Lower through Middle to Upper Paleolithic. Moreover, the Suyanggae site shown a large number of lithic assemblages with 50 flint workshops for tool production found in Suyanggae locality I and a few more workshops found in locality VI. The quartz, obsidian, rhyolite and siliceous shale was the main raw material which was utilized to make tools, and the lithic assemblage contains handaxes, cores, blades, flakes, side-scrapers, end-scrapers, tanged points, tanged tools among the others. These findings can confirm this open site to be a huge workshop. In addition, Suyanggae complex probably was used as seasonal camp in warmer periods and the surrounding caves may have been used as shelters when the climate was cooler.

W omawianych osadach została znaleziona bogata i urozmaicona malakofauna. Analizie malakologicznej zostały poddane profile pochodzące z 54 stanowisk opracowanych przez różnych autorów. W całym badanym materiale zostało wydzielonych 18 zespołów mięczaków reprezentujących trzy typy siedlisk: środowiska lądowe, środowiska okresowych zbiorników wodnych i środowiska stałych zbiorników wodnych. Skład i struktura tych zespołów pozwalają na scharakteryzowanie klimatu i zróżnicowania siedlisk. Następstwa asocjacji malakologicznych umożliwiły zdefiniowanie trzech typów sekwencji malakologicznych. Na podstawie tych sukcesji został opracowany schemat ewolucji zbiorników jeziornych w czasie późnego glacjału i holocenu na północy Polski.
Late Glacial and Holocene mollusc-bearing deposits developed as lacustrine chalk and/or calcareous gyttja are widespread in Northern Poland. They fill up water bodies formed during the final stage of deglaciation. These sediments usually contains rich assemblages of molluscs. Calcareous lake deposits and it's malacofauna were described in detail by several authors in 54 localities. Eighteen communities of snails and bivalves have been distinguished. They are represents three types of environment: land, temporary water bodies and permanent water bodies (lakes). The composition and structure of malacocenoses reflect changes of the climate and differentiation of habitats. Three types of malacological sequences can be define. The scheme of evolution water bodies during the Late Glacial and Holocene in Northern Poland was elaborated based on successions of molluscan communities.

The number of the representatives of the xerophilous, Palaearctic and Holarctic species has declined while the share of individuals of the autumn development type and of forest species has increased. Following the cuttings the SCP index and the Mean Individual Biomass have attained higher values. The results suggest that tending cuttings in the stand have a favourable effect on the carabid assemblages.

Opis:
Artykuł stanowi analizę performatywności dwóch ikon kompozytowych w kontekście liturgicznym i w kontekście muzealnym. Dzięki zastosowaniu kategorii asamblażu i ikony performatywnej do analizy dwóch przykładów ikon kompozytowych w artykule scharakteryzowano wpływ asamblażowej formy na kult i prezentację obrazów.
This article analyzes the performativity of two composite icons in liturgical and museum contexts. Their unusual form, consisting of two panels combined as one work of art, is interpreted as an assemblage, following Victor I. Stoichita use of the term. Moreover, the multivalency of the term assemblage is used to present the icons as part of dynamic social assemblages by applying the theoretical perspective of assemblage theory. It becomes crucial in seeing them as active agents in the assemblages of humans and non-humans as well as understanding the potential of this unusual form and the way they function in various relations with other works of art, institutions, and people. Applying the categories of assemblage and performative icon to the analysis of two examples of composite icons, the article characterizes the influence of assemblage form on the veneration and presentation of icons. Focusing on the issue of performativity, agency, and affordance made it possible to highlight the dynamics of the assemblage form and the icon itself. Depending on the context—the performances in which it participates and the assemblages of which it becomes a part—the icon can be perceived as a work of art and/or a devotional image that transcends the realm of artistic values. The article also reflects on the assemblage nature of the icon research and study process.

Opis:
The composition and structure of the breeding bird community in the Borki Forest in north-eastern Poland were investigated during two separate periods: 1994–1996 and 2012–2014. Bird censuses were carried out in three plots located in mature oak-hornbeam, ash-alder and mixed coniferous forest stands. A standard combined mapping technique for estimating the number of breeding birds was applied. A total of 74 bird species bred at least once within any plot during 1994–1996 or 2012–2014. The structure of the bird assemblages on particular plots displayed a high degree of similarity, exceeding 75%, which means that they represent essentially the same bird community. However, the investigated assemblages have changed substantially over the 20 years. Both, the number of breeding bird species and the population densities on all plots, were much higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996. The mean number of breeding species on all plots was over 50% higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996, whereas the mean total density of breeding pairs increased by more than 60%. Total population densities on the plots increased as a result of an increase in population densities of individual bird species combined with an increase in the number of breeding species. Due to different rates of population growth for certain species, also the composition of dominating species group have changed. The observed changes in the avifauna of the Borki Forest were most probably due to an enrichment of the forest habitats structure, which was caused by natural factors, such as ageing of forest stands, forest succession and a change in water regime by beaver dams, as well as by forest management, including group felling within or in the vicinity of plots and uncovering of the forest edge.

Opis:
This article focuses on the diatom assemblages and geochemical composition of sediment cores retrieved from the Pomeranian Bay. We also discuss similarities and differences in the diatom assemblages and the palaeogeographic development of nearby regions. Our main objective was to determine the characteristics and rate of the Littorina transgression in the Pomeranian Bay area. Sediments were divided into units based on differences in the distribution of diatom ecological groups and in geochemical ratios, such as Mg/Ca, Na/K and Fe/Mn. This study identified lacustrine sediments deposited during the time of the Ancylus Lake. This lacustrine-period sedimentation took place in a shallow lake under aerobic conditions. The record of the onset of marine environment dates to 8900–8300 cal BP and corresponds to the Littorina transgression. After about 8300 cal BP, sedimentation took place in a deeper marine environment with higher biogenic production and anaerobic conditions. The abrupt appearance of marine diatom species and increased geochemical salinity indicators reflect the large impact of the Littorina transgression on the Pomeranian Bay environment.

Opis:
Despite the stereotype that an artistic stage of Cracow after World War 2 was dominated by Colourism, Surrealism, Tachisme and Matter Painting – distinctly present in the circle of the Second Krakow Group and its leader Tadeusz Kantor, and in the later period dominated by expressionistic figuration, we may also observe in the Cracow milieu a significant interest for cold Geometric Abstraction that is based on optical effects. Especially after 1960 we can follow in Cracow development of various tendencies in Geometric Abstraction to name only Op Art, Minimal Art or Post Painterly Abstraction. This development was undoubtedly affected by succeeding exhibitions of the International Print Biennial (at present Print Triennial) within which works from this artistic circle appeared next to popular in the 1960s Pop Art. Different versions of Geometric Abstraction were practised, for instance, by the following artists: Alina Kalczyńska, Ryszard Otręba and Jan Pamuła who, as one of the first artists in Poland, paid his attention to computer graphic art. The initiated in the 1960s trend for Geometric Abstraction in Cracow painting and graphics has been continued till today, being at the same time an alternative to figurative tendencies and multimedia art. The author discusses the succeeding generations of artists from Cracow dealing with Geometric Abstractionism, starting from emigrant artist Mieczysław Janikowski, who studied in Cracow as early as before the war and was a joint between inter-war and post-war avantgarde, and reaching at the Action of Abstraction Revaluation, undertaken by the Cracow gallery F.A.I.T in 2008–2009 with participation of the young- est artistic generation. Artists from Cracow, let it be Adam Marczyński and his apprentice Janusz Orbitowski, created geometric relief compositions. Jerzy Kałucki’s painterly Geometric Abstraction was accompanied by conceptual works and installations. The work of Adam Wsiołkowski is situated somewhere between abstraction and figuration and may be ascribed to the stream of Visualism. Nevertheless, what comes as characteristic for Polish artists focusing on Abstractionism is referring to the contents of a spiritual character, symbolic meanings of numbers and geometric figures. These tendencies may also be observed on the example of Cracow artists, to name but a few: Tadeusz Wiktor, Teresa Bujnowska, Andrzej Bednarczyk, Tamara Berdowska, Michał Misiak, and Beata Popławska.

Opis:
The article presents one of the strands of empirical research on the energy transition process conducted by an anthropologist in Upper Lusatia, in the Bogatynia municipality, in the area around the Turów mining and power complex. The perspective of transrelational ethnography makes it possible to weave together the various elements of this process and look at its changing environmental/economic, political and socio-cultural conditions. The text shows some of the many interweaves uncovered in the field, in the decarbonisation process, seen in the perspective of transrelational ethnography. It focuses on the ambiguities in the worlds of the region’s residents as brought to light in the study. The author draws attention to epistemological traps, such as the category of conflict, that await the anthropologist in a field that faces an uncertain post-coal future. Also, the author stresses the lack of preparedness of the volatile, conceptually unclosed field and its unstable, complex, assemblage architecture.

Opis:
W artykule proponuję rozszerzenie krążeniowego ujęcia praktyk naukowych wprowadzone przez Bruno Latoura w Nadziei Pandory, o koncepcję kapitalistycznego systemu-świata Immanuela Wallersteina. Pozwala to zaobserwować szereg nowych zjawisk i zależności związanych z szeroko pojmowanymi praktykami uprawiania nauki, które pierwotny model Latoura całkowicie pomijał.
In the paper, I extend Bruno Latour’s circulatory model of scientifi c practices from his Pandora’s Hope, with Immanuel Wallerstein’s theory of capitalist world-system. This enables to shed light on various phenomena, actions, and relations not taken into account by the Latour’s approach. Drawing on Wallerstein’s concepts, I argue that Latour’s model offers only a blueprint for the science of the center (core). I analyze an example of academic career to discuss the features of semi-peripherial science. I am particularly interested in the cluster of phenomena named “suitcase science”. Its basic fi gure is a suitcase fi lled with photocopies of scientifi c texts and books that once transferred to a new location turn into valuable resources (capital). Thus, suitcase relocated to a new place – to be precise, from the core to the periphery – becomes the focal point for many new practices, beliefs, habits and institutional actions. As a whole they are more of a heterogenic assemblage than a (sub)culture or a set of institutions. In the last paragraphs I analyze some of its specifi c features.
