The subject of Wojciech Rusinek’s review is Marek Bieńczyk’s collection of essays Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida [Olga’s Apple, David’s Feet]. The author begins his reading of the book by placing it in the context of Bieńczyk’s earlier achievements: both artistic (novels, literary essays) and academic (bearing witness to his studies on Romanticism). While noting that Bieńczyk’s essays are governed by a wealth and a surprising variety of the explored themes, Rusinek emphasises, however, the worldview coherence of the volume. According to the author of the review, a key to the interpretation of all the essays in the book is “the praise of the taste of life,” which makes a new tone in Bieńczyk’s writing, so far associated mainly with the reflection on melancholy and melancholy discourse present in his artistic prose. In the following part of the review, by outlining the content of the essays devoted to Proust’s and Nerval’s prose, Hopper’s painting or Sempé’s drawings, Rusinek analyses the anthropological figures around which Bieńczyk’s digressive and slow reflection revolves: gesture, light, escape, frozen time. The reading of Bieńczyk’s work becomes enriched with an analysis of style (a role of stylization). Moreover, the review points out those fragments of Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida where a description of artistic works becomes smoothly linked with the elements of the author’s biography. In the conclusion of the reflection upon Bieńczyk’s essays, the author states that the essays clearly lean towards poetics of epiphany, which, in the view of the author of Jabłko Olgi…, would mean an unclear, veiled by an infinite number of borrowings, allegories, allusions and stylizations, suspending the flow of time, experience of existence in its inexpressible fullness.

The aim of this issue of Ethics in Progress is to provide a provisional, open-ended view on the ultimate realities of life and the ethical challenges they pose in medical, sociological, and existential contexts. The issue explores axiologies and meta-ethical narratives related to the art of dying, or in other words the moral domain encompassing the quest for a good life and a good death. Two problematic aspects emerge from the latest body of research: (1) the difficulty involved in tackling ethical challenges in medical and sociological contexts; and (2) the marginal role of the patient’s agency and narrative-ownership of end-of-life decision-making. A direction is pointed out that suggests that interventions across interdisciplinary groups involved in medical aid to dying should focus on promoting ethical behaviour on the side of healthcare personnel. Finally, attention to language, discourse, communication, and the narratives of death and dying call this edition of Ethics in Progress to examine the ontological and epistemological categories that underlie the study of lifeworlds and ‘discourse communities’, which are those associated with moral agents interlacing historical motives, language, communication, normative beliefs, social norms and roles, power relations, hard clinical evidence, and contested values in the context of medical practices and, broadly speaking, practices surrounding death.

Opis:
The sense of quality of life is a subjective attitude towards the assessment of satisfaction with one’s own life. They can be divided into four spheres: psychophysical, psychosocial, subjective, and metaphysical. 210 people participated in the study – 53 illusionists, 52 theater actors, and 105 people who did not engage in activities related to public appearances. The groups were compared in terms of the sense of quality of life, and the study used the Sense of Life Quality Questionnaire by Straś-Romanowska, Oleszkowicz, and Frąckowiak (2004) in a modified version by Mróz et al. (2017). Theater actors and magicians had a higher level of satisfaction with the psychosocial sphere and a general level of quality of life compared to the control group (which has neither experience nor education related to stage performance). In terms of the psychophysical and metaphysical spheres of the sense of quality of life, theater actors were characterised by a higher level of satisfaction compared to people who did not engage in stage activity. In the conducted study, no statistically significant differences between groups were observed in relation to the subjective sphere of the sense of quality of life.
Poczucie jakości życia to subiektywne ustosunkowanie względem oceny zadowolenia z własnego życia. Można je ująć w obszarze czterech sfer: psychofizycznej, psychospołecznej, podmiotowej i metafizycznej. W badaniu wzięło udział 210 osób – 53 iluzjonistów, 52 aktorów teatralnych oraz 105 osób niepodejmujących aktywności związanej z publicznym występowaniem. Grupy zostały porównane pod kątem poczucia jakości życia, a w badaniu wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Poczucia Jakości Życia autorstwa Straś-Romanowskiej, Oleszkowicz i Frąckowiaka (2004) w zmodyfikowanej wersji opracowanej przez Mróz (Mróz, Chudzicka-Czupała, Kuśpit, 2017). Aktorzy teatralni oraz iluzjoniści cechowali się większym poziomem zadowolenia ze sfery psychospołecznej oraz ogólnym poziomem poczucia jakości życia niż grupa porównawcza (która nie miała ani doświadczenia, ani nie ukończyła edukacji związanej z wykonawstwem scenicznym). W zakresie sfer psychofizycznej i metafizycznej poczucia jakości życia to aktorów teatralnych cechował wyższy poziom zadowolenia w porównaniu z osobami niepodejmującymi aktywności scenicznej. W przeprowadzonym badaniu nie zaobserwowano istotnych statystycznie różnic międzygrupowych w odniesieniu do sfery podmiotowej poczucia jakości życia.

In this paper I am proposing to investigate some possible connecting points between art, aesthetics and the urban experience, more precisely how the perception and experience of the city as well as the features of urban life can inspire artists. At the same time, I am also curious how artworks can be used to understand this urban experience, as well as how they can be interpreted as not only simple descriptions and depictions, but also as active contributions and modes of suggesting solutions to the most pressing issues of contemporary cities and of city life. Hence my primary aim is discussing some approaches towards the aesthetic analyses of urbanity through modern and contemporary examples. In this way I am focusing less on how the city appears as a mere motive in artworks, or how it is used as main object or background element indicating the context in representations; and I am also not aiming to provide a survey analyses of the numerous ideas of the aesthetics of urbanity. Instead of these, here I am concentrating on how urbanity and the experiencing of the city(life) in itself as well as its multifaceted aspects can become a source of inspiration and at the same time a critically analysed subject, i.e. a concept that is examined through the work itself.

Każdorazowe odnajdywanie się w cybernetycznej, zgoła futurystycznej przestrzeni, jaką jest współczesny świat, jest dziś poważnym zadaniem człowieka. Boryka się on bowiem z problema-mi, które definitywnie zmieniają perspektywę życia, odczuwania, celu, a nawet sensu egzystencji. Współczesny człowiek ma kłopot z nadaktywnością myślową, techniczną wizją swojej psyche, cyfryzacją własnych zachowań i emocji. Jego reakcje ulegają „skalowaniu”, „skanowaniu”, „ra-mowaniu” i „przeramowaniu”, przez co sam przestaje je rozumieć. W nurcie filozoficzno-artystycznym o nazwie teoria białej emocji, która z początku swoich założeń jest koncepcją w sztuce, w ostatnich trzech latach pojawiła się w owej przestrzeni edukacja i pedagogika. Poka-zuje to tendencję, że współcześni ludzie próbują szukać odpowiedzi na pytania o sens w sztuce poprzez znalezienie drogi w prostym rozumieniu spraw z własnej codzienności.
Every finding in the cybernetic, futuristic space of today's world is today a serious human task. The human is struggling with problems that definitely change the perspective of life, feeling, purpose and even the meaning of existence. Contemporary man has trouble with hyperactive thinking, technical vision of his psyche, digitization of his own behavior and emotions. His reac-tions are „scaled”, „scanned”, „framed” and „broken” so that himself does not understand. In the philosophical and artistic field called White Emotions Theory, which was a concept in art, during the three years, education and pedagogy have emerged spontaneously. It shows the tendency that people are trying to find answers to questions about sense in art and a simple understanding of things and their present life.

Artykuł porusza kwestię codzienności jako potencjalnej materii pracy dla animatora kultury. Jego celem jest zwrócenie uwagi na doniosłą rolę, jaką codzienność może stanowić w pracy animacyjnej. Za punkt widzenia w niniejszych rozważaniach autorka przyjmuje animację kultury w perspektywie antropologicznej, która nastawiona jest przede wszystkim na pozytywną identyfikację uczestników animacyjnych działań z własnym sposobem życia. Artykuł będący teoretycznym rozwinięciem spostrzeżeń autorki, opartych na wieloletnich badaniach pracy animacyjnej, przekonuje do rozpoznania codzienności jako istotnej wartości w życiu i uczynienia z niej materii samorozwoju dorosłego człowieka oraz poprawy relacji z innymi członkami społeczeństwa.
The articles brings up a question about everyday life as a potential matter of work for cultural animator. Its purpose is to take note of the significant role that everyday life may play in the work related to animation. As a standpoint in present reflections, the author takes on cultural animation in an anthropological perspective, the latter being oriented above all to positive identification of the participants of animation activities with her own lifestyle. The article with its theoretical unfolding of the author’s perceptions based on many years of cultural animation research, convinces us to recognize everyday life as a vital value in life and to make everyday life a matter of self-development of an adult as well as betterment of the relation with other members of the society.

In this article I try to interpret the music aspect of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s famous movie The Double Life of Véronique (1991, music: Z. Preisner). The director, whose works are full of allusions to music and generally to art, always paid special attention to the sound of his movies. The Double Life of Véronique, though not the last “fruit” of the cooperation between Kieslowski and Zbigniew Preisner, is the best illustration of this fact. The musical elements permeate almost all aspects of this work, from the plot to the structure of the movie (the use of the leitmotif technique), and correspond closely to the action. The key importance of music is illustrated by a description of what I consider to be the film’s three most significant scenes: two from the “Polish” and one from the “French” part of this work.

Wychowanie przez sztukę mające prowadzić do rozwoju człowieka, do równowagi funkcji intelektualnych, emocjonalnych i motywacyjno-wolitywnych, jest często pomijanym aspektem. Są to również doświadczenia przykre, smutne, trudne. Sztuka sakralna nie pomija takich doznań w życiu człowieka. Przedstawia śmierć często w taki sposób, by odbiorcę zachęcić do refleksji i wzbogacić jego życie. Sztuka wtedy staje się narzędziem ogólnego kształtowania człowieka, które ma umożliwić mu życie w sposób spontaniczny i twórczy, a także pomóc osiągnąć harmonię życia zmysłowego, uczuciowego i intelektualnego.
Education through art, which is to lead to human development and to balance intellectual, emotional and motivational-volitional aspects, is often overlooked problem. Art should control our lives. World of imagination is formed since childhood, subjected to various perturbations and differentiated during adolescence and experiences. These are also the experience unpleasant, sad and difficult. Sacred art does not ignore such sensations in human life. It represents death, which is a taboo subject, in such a way as to encourage the recipient to reflect and enrich his or her life. Therefore art becomes a tool for the overall development of human beings which is to enable man to live in a spontaneous and creative way and to help achieve harmony of sensual, emotional and intellectual life.

The paper covers the symbolism of death, which seems to be largely overlooked, trivialized or narrowly read both by the public and by some authors of texts on contemporary aesthetics. Numerous artists of the 20th and 21st century, including those widely known and commented on, try to restore the theme of mortality to the culture of the West, often showing it in the form of intercultural symbols, present in art from the beginning of its documented existence. The aim of this essay is to summon some meanings of such symbols, which are in a comprehensive way traditional, but invariably attractive for contemporary artists and thus freely transformed, and to sketch the possibility of their potential existential impact. The exploration of the possible causes of these meanings has been conducted on the basis of the selected proposals of interpretation in visual anthropology and depth psychology. The symbolism of death and its alleged role in contemporary art and contemporary Western culture have been also confronted with the selected proposals of the philosophy of life.
Artykuł dotyczy symboliki śmierci, która wydaje się w dużej mierze niezauważana, banalizo-wana lub wąsko odczytywana zarówno przez współczesnych odbiorców sztuki, jak i przez estetykę współczesną. Autorka zakłada, że artyści XX i XXI wieku, również ci szeroko znani i komentowani, starają się przywrócić kulturze Zachodu tematykę skończoności życia, podając nam ją często „do widzenia” w postaci zestawień międzykulturowych symboli obecnych w sztuce od początku jej udokumentowanego istnienia. Celem pracy jest ukazanie niektórych znaczeń symboliki śmierci (nieodmiennie atrakcyjnej dla twórców, w sposób szeroko pojęty tradycyjnej, choć swobodnie współcześnie trawestowanej) oraz możliwości jej potencjalnego oddziaływania. Eksploracja możliwych przyczyn aktualności tych znaczeń przeprowadzona została w oparciu o wybrane propozycje interpretacyjne antropologii kultury wizualnej i psy-chologii głębi. Symbolika śmierci i jej domniemana rola w sztuce współczesnej i współczesnej kulturze zachodniej zostały także skonfrontowane z wybranymi propozycjami filozofii życia.

In the article, Aneta Jabłońska analyzes a way Witkacy defined art and creative process. Jabłońska discerns a parallel between Witkacy’s terms and interpretations of these categories which were named in modernism. The author of the article shows the conceptions of art which were described in The 622 Downfalls of Bungo. She also presents how these conceptions influence the acts of the novel’s main characters (among others of Bungo, Duke of Nevermore and Baron Brummel). Jabłońska distinguishes the following theories: aestheticism of the modern period, aesthetic pragmatism, and modern aestheticism. The article casts doubt on Bożena Danek-Wojnowska’s thesis because Jabłońska proves that in his novel, Witkacy did not opt for any of the theories which he showed in The 622 Downfalls of Bungo as each of them was either destroying the artist or denying the existence of pure art and its creation.

Opis:
The article describes the findings of the international research project “Science-Art-Education. An innovative model of diagnosis, methods, techniques of work with an artistically gifted learner” (the project co-financed by EU, October 2011 – September 2013). On completion of the project, the author carried out a three-year research (2015–2018) on the effectiveness of the model SAE (whose aim is to develop life skills in children) applied in twelve schools in southern Poland. The article presents the initial conclusions from the research on possible influence of the SAE model on development of the skill of cooperation and combating stress in difficult situations by young learners. One hundred and twenty six children from different backgrounds (big city, small town, village) took part in the experimental research. The research was carried out for a year on the SAE model in its form of primary school. The results bring optimistic data – there is a marked increase in development of strategies of cooperation accompanied by decrease of defence strategies, such as avoidance, submission, aggression, which negatively affect child’s further development.
Opisane w opracowaniu badania są pokłosiem międzynarodowego projektu badawczo-dydaktycznego „Nauka-Sztuka-Edukacja. Innowacyjny model diagnozy, metod, form pracy i opieki nad uczniem zdolnym plastycznie” (projekt współfinansowany przez UE, październik 2011 – wrzesień 2013). Autorka po zakończeniu projektu prowadziła trzyletnie badania (2015–2018) nad efektywnością modelu NSE (mającego służyć rozwojowi umiejętności życiowych dzieci) w 12 szkołach podstawowych Polski południowej. W niniejszym artykule autorka dzieli się pierwszymi wnioskami z badań, dotyczącymi możliwości wpływu modelu NSE na wzrost umiejętności współpracy dzieci w młodszym wieku szkolnym i pokonywania stresu w sytuacjach trudnych. W tym celu zostały omówione wyniki badań eksperymentalnych, w których uczestniczyło 126 dzieci z trzech środowisk (duże miasto, małe miasto, wieś) po roku realizacji modelu NSE w szkołach w klasie I szkoły podstawowej. Wyniki przynoszą optymistyczne dane, cieszy fakt wzrostu w grupach eksperymentalnych strategii współpracy przy obniżeniu strategii obronnych, niekorzystnych dla dalszego zdrowia psychicznego dzieci: uniku, ulegania, agresji.
