The article examines the semantic relationship between three homonymous IE roots *uerg- (‘to work, to do’, ‘to include’, ‘power, anger’) and three PSlav. roots *ćara (‘shell’, ‘magic’, ‘stroke, line’). All the IE roots can be derived from the meaning of ‘to turn, to surround’, while the PSlav. roots go back to *(s)ker- ‘to cut’. It is possible that (s)ker- is one of the variants *sek-/sek-/sek- with the meaning ‘to cut’. All the three roots can be built from *se-/se-, synchronically ‘to cut / to connect / to bend’, with the help of the determinatives k.

The authors analyze the new book The place of the Macedonian phonetics within the Slavic and Balkan linguistic area from Irena Sawicka and Anna Cychnerska. The book is trying to shed new light on the place of Macedonian phonetics regarding its Slavic heritage and also regarding the contact changes that appeared during development of the Macedonian language in the Balkan linguistic league. Their research is conducted on Macedonian dialects represented in Common linguistic atlas (OLA) and in Phonological bases of the Macedonian dialects from B. Vidoeski. In their book, Sawicka and Cychnerska state that they use diachronic data, but their main goal is to present selected synchronic features from the Macedonian phonetics. They explain most of the phonetic features in Macedonian from an areal-typological aspect with special emphasis on the Balkan convergences. The authors of the book state that the Macedonian phonetic should be included in southwest type of Slavic phonetics. They conclude that the modern form of Macedonian phonetic, to large extent, was influenced by areal position of the Macedonian language and to its development in the Balkan multilingual territory.

A recent bimoraic analysis of the properties of (late) PIE laryngeals supports Rix’s theory of PIE CRHC (with implications for CRHV) in Greek and Beekes’ law of laryngeal vocalization following initial resonant. Beekes’ difficulties involving PIE *r are eliminated by demonstrating that Latin and Vedic, unlike Hittite, Greek and Armenian, always distinguish between PIE *rHC- and PIE *HrHC-. Lubotsky’s partly related law of laryngeal loss in Indo-Iranian is found to be supported by twelve (partly amended) etymologies out of Lubotsky’s original fourteen plus one new one. Alternatives are essayed for etymologies containing PIE *a proposed in refutation of these laws. Accentually conditioned voicing by *h3 is further promoted.

In the final part of the study, a lexicographical suggestion is made: What we really need is a comparative (and, if possible, a historical) dictionary of Turkish loanwords in the Macedonian language area. Without it, we will never be in a position to establish their precise etyma.

The investigations were carried out to determine the relation ship between Cr, Co, Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb content and glacial morphogenesis that implies the geomorphological position of out crops of Quaternary deposits. The analysis deals with parts of two glacial uplands whose relief developed during deglaciation of the Warta ice sheet and which are characterized by similar relief and lithology of surface deposits. These are the Nidzica Upland near Grzebsk and the Bielsk Plain near Bielsk Podlaski. These areas show distinct regularity in pattern of geomorphological units, proving their areal deglaciation. Melt-out depressions, side valleys, ablation covers, kame terraces and kames as well as glaciofluvial plains are observed. The typical geomorphological element is isolated morainic hills (mesas). The investigations en abled determinations of regularity in the distribution of chemical eleements in the soil environment of the geomorphological units. Among mineral sediments, clay interlayers observed within kameter race and kame deposits were the most susceptible to concentrations of heavy metals, regard less of the region and the element to be determined. Lower Cd, Cu, Co, Pb, Zn and Cr contents were as sociated with morainic mesa and ablation cover deposits. The lowest contents of heavy minerals were mea sured in glaciofluvial plain, kame and kame terrace sands. Among land forms filled with organic deposits, the high estabilities to fix Cr, Co, Cu and Zn were shown by ice-dammed basins within upland deposits (Nidzica Upland) and side valley deposits (Bielsk Plain). Peats and muds of melt-out depressions were found to be most active in retaining Cd and Pb.

This article investigates the problem of the etymological connection between the Greek word óμείχω ‘to urinate’ and the agent noun μοιχός ‘adulterer’, the semantics of which has often been termed improbable. It is pointed out that the connection might be made more probable when analyzing the Latin data: the verb meiō, -ere ‘to urinate’ and its meaning in the Latin texts, which is not always restricted to ‘urinating’ but is also used as an obscene word meaning ‘to ejaculate’. We can then postulate that μοιχός was an agent noun of óμείχω in the meaning of ‘to ejaculate’ and this way as ‘adulterer’.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the issue of the modifiable areal unit problem, which means a possibility of obtaining various results for spatial economic analyses depending on the assumed composition of territorial units. The major research objective of the work is to examine the scale problem that constitutes one of the aspects of the modifiable areal unit problem. Analysis of the scale problem will be conducted for two research problems, namely, for the problem of the causal relationships between the level of investment outlays in enterprises per capita and the number of entities of the national economy per capita, and the issue of the dependence between the registered unemployment rate and the level of investment outlays per capita. The calculations based on the empirical values of those variables have showed that moving to a higher level of aggregation resulted in a change in the estimates of the parameters. The results obtained were the justification for undertaking the realisation of the objective. The scale problem was considered by means of a simulation analysis with a special emphasis laid on differentiating the variables expressed in absolute quantities and ones expressed in relative quantities. The study conducted allowed the identification of changes in basic properties as well as in correlation of the researched variables expressed in absolute and relative quantities. Based on the findings, it was stated that a correlation analysis and a regression analysis may lead to different conclusions depending on the assumed level of aggregation. The realisation of the research objective set in the paper also showed the need to consider the adequate character of variables in both spatial economic analyses and during the examination of the scale problem.

Surface roughness is an important indicator in the evaluation of machining and product quality, as well as a direct factor affecting the performance of components. A rapidly developing filtering technology has become the main means of extracting surface roughness. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is constantly updating and improving the standard system for filtering technology in order to meet the requirements of technological development. Based on the filters already accepted by the international standard ISO 16610, this study briefly introduces the filtering principle of each filter, reviews the development of each filter in the application of surface roughness, and compares the advantages and limitations of their individual performances. The application range of each filter is summarized and, finally, the future direction of the digital filtering used in surface roughness is extrapolated.

The development of Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) and the expansion of its communicative functions is connected to the use of multiword expressions as new means of expression. The question is to what extent the NPE phraseology is derived from the original lexifier, i.e. English, and what the influence of substratum languages belonging to different genetic and typological groups is. The article presents various types of multiword expressions which are based on English words, but in terms of structural features and conceptualization patterns represent collocations copied from other West African native languages. In this connection, special attention is given to the use of body-related terms in NPE phraseology.

Opis:
The Aromanian Farsheroti Dialect – Balkan PerspectiveThe focus of our interest is the analysis of the Aromanian Farsheroti speech from the Ohrid-Struga region, which has never been a subject of a separate linguistic analysis. This speech is described in comparison to the Macedonian Ohrid-Struga dialects and special emphasis is given to their mutual interferences within the Balkan context. Using such approach, the parallel structures and the differences between these speeches are more clearly pointed out thus presenting a wider picture of the processes typical of the Balkan linguistic community. The efforts for drawing closer to a joint model that enables easier and straightforward communication were the most powerful with the linguistic features and categories that were in a way the most distinct and completely different. Both Aromanian Farsheroti and Macedonian Ohrid speeches adjusted to each other by using all available linguistic means not only from their own languages. For instance, the Aromanian Farsheroti speech has eliminated the case inflections for genitive / dative thus approaching closer to the analytical declination which is the case with the Macedonian language. Even for the complex past tenses from a present point of view can be argued that they outline an almost joint Albanian-Aromanian-Macedonian model. The Aromanian Farsheroti dialect, using its own and the borrowed Albanian linguistic characteristics, has created such model, whereas the Macedonian Ohrid speech, on the other hand, by adopting the constructions with imam (have) and sum (be), has filled the blanks in its own verbal tense system. The constructions showing admirative are another typical feature that the Aromanian has borrowed from the Albanian and has incorporated into the Macedonian system. All these instances show that the mutual interference was very strong and emerged deeply in the structure of the two systems. This is another proof of the great need for mutual conception of the world which is a result of the need for easier mutual communication. Podobnie możemy mówić o wspólnym albańsko-arumuńsko-macedońskim modelu w odniesieniu do czasów przeszłych złożonych. Arumuński dialekt Farszerotów stworzył taki model, wykorzystując własne i zapożyczone z albańskiego środki językowe. Z drugiej zaś strony ochrydzki macedoński, przejmując konstrukcje z imam i sum, wypełnił brakujące miejsca we własnym systemie czasów.

Opis:
The new two-step dual-wavelength interferometry method that uses only two pairs of interferograms for surface relief retrieval is proposed. In this method, two interferograms in each pair are differed only by an arbitrary phase shift of a reference wave. The method allows using only one out-of-plane shift of a reference wave to record each second interferogram in both pairs, since arbitrary phase shifts between interferograms in each pair can be defined by calculation of the correlation coefficient between two interferograms. This method can extract separately areal surface roughness and areal waviness phase maps from a phase map of the total surface relief and reduce errors produced during the surface relief retrieving. Computer simulation and experimental verification have confirmed the reliability of the proposed method.
