An intensive insertion of nature into urbanized structures provides a common denominator for modern design. The role of alien species in greenery is on the increase, and is the significance of their integration. It is emphasized that the responsibility for the sustainable cultivation of planetary garden rests with the man. This responsibility indicates symbiotic attitude through an active participation in the process of creation and then care/cultivation in order to maintain a new/novel balance.

In addition to art, the author also examines the influence of Bauhaus on contemporary design. Creating objects that meet the needs of modern life is an essential part of contemporary design trends. The article also investigates how Bauhaus influences architecture. Bauhaus representatives believed that architecture should be functional while embodying aesthetic principles. This concept is reflected in contemporary architectural trends, where simplicity of form and the use of new materials and technologies combine with the desire to create a functional and aesthetic environment. In the conclusions, the author emphasizes the importance of Bauhaus in shaping contemporary artistic and design culture. The influence of Bauhaus is manifested in an open, experimental approach to creativity, the use of new materials and technologies, and a focus on the functionality and simplicity of forms. Bauhaus ideas continue to inspire artists, architects, and designers, contributing to the development of contemporary art and design. All of this highlights the relevance and significance of Bauhaus in the modern world, where the traditions of the past and the innovations of the present come together to create a new dimension of art and design.

The article presents selected issues connected with the design process of the multi-family residential buildings in Poland based on the experience in designing dwelling units on Jurowiecka street in Bialystok. It constitutes an outline of factors that have considerably affected the shape of the residential architecture. To a large extent, they were not attributable to the substantive aspects of the urban planning. The article includes the information on historical considerations of the location as well as the design concepts.

W pływ koloru na ludzką podświadomość i psychikę jest tematem badań naukowców wielu dziedzin nauki - zakres wpływu barw na człowieka jest szeroki oraz złożony, a czynniki powodujące reakcje na daną barwę mają podłoże zarówno biologiczne, psychologiczne, emocjonalne, jak i kulturowe. W artykule zostały przytoczone wybrane projekty holenderskiej pracowni MVRDV, wyróżniające się dużym udziałem intensywnych, jasnych i czystych barw, ze zwróceniem uwagi na znaczenie ich użycia w projektach architektonicznych, urbanistycznych, wnętrz oraz instalacji artystycznych. Rozważania teoretyczne uzupełnione są odpowiedzią jednej z wiodących architektek z rotterdamskiej pracowni - Fokke Moerel, na postawione w ramach artykułu pytania.
The influence of colour on the human subconscious and psyche is the subject of research in many fields of science - the scope of the influence of color is various, as its impact on humans is complex, including biological, psychological, emotional and cultural basis. Referring to the results of scientific research on the theory of color, the impact of the colour will be analyzed in the context of perception of architectural forms, both in small and large scale, comprising seeing it as an singular object and within a wider context as a part of urban tissue. The article cites a selection of projects by the dutch MVRDV studio, that stands out due to uncommon, astonishing use of intense, bright and pure colors, paying attention to the importance of their purpose in architectural and urban projects, interiors and artistic installations. Theoretical considerations are supplemented with the answers of one of the leading architects from the Rotterdam studio - Fokke Moerel, referring to the main issue of the article.

There is no other area of human interest in which immaterial ideas, feelings and storytelling problems meet material world as closely as in the area of set - design. This is where philosophical questions and religious references suddenly start to 'take shape'. In my article I will analyse this process and show how many different contexts can be taken into consideration even if we choose as simple and minimalistic architecture as the one from the famous science – fiction movie Cube, directed by Vincenzo Natali. On a few pages we will discuss interfaith symbolism of the form of square with the focus on four main religious systems - Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Surprisingly all of these have linked the square with very similar meanings. We will analyse teleological concepts of Aristotle (particularly the 'final cause' theory), which are defined in one of his most famous works, the 'metaphysics'. The most important aspect of this thesis ('purposefulness' as an obligatory attribute of existence) can be easily connected with the plot of the movie, where characters are compliant with the mathematical system in which they appeared. In the conclusion we will try to understand how symbolic meanings can influence our understanding of the final message of the movie and at the very ending we will refer to the etymology of the word 'cosmos'. The chapter will hopefully prove that Cube can offer careful viewers much more than a large amount of suspense or thrill and can be read as a large metaphor. However, to find an exit from the labyrinth of interpretations we will have to – paraphrasing the words of Quentin, one of the main characters – find a place from which we can see 'the big picture'.

Celem artykułu jest analiza przebiegu i ocena rezultatów działań w ramach warsztatów projektowych przeprowadzonych wiosną 2020 r., w czasie pandemii Covid-19, ze studentami Wydziału Architektury Krakowskiej Akademii im. Andrzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego oraz Katedry Architektury na Wydziale Inżynierii i Projektowania Uniwersytetu Hosei w Tokio. Tematem warsztatów było badanie pojęcia mieszkalnictwa publicznego w XXI w. na przykładzie osiedla Nishi-Yamato Danchi zbudowanego w Tokio w latach 1960–1970. W badaniu wykorzystano materiały zebrane przez autora – uczestnika i obserwatora warsztatów. Wyniki badań potwierdzają możliwości praktycznego wykorzystania ogólnodostępnych zasobów wizualizacji powierzchni ziemi, uzyskanych dzięki teledetekcji lotniczej i satelitarnej, oraz efektywnego komunikowania się przez Internet w czasie działalności dydaktycznej. Międzynarodowe warsztaty projektowe poszerzyły wiedzę uczestników na temat architektury mieszkaniowej, skłoniły do poprawy jakości kształcenia studentów, były także źródłem tematów badawczych np. dotyczących architektury transkulturowej.
The aim of the article is to analyze the course and evaluate the results of activities as part of the design workshops of the design studio conducted in spring 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, with students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University and the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering and Design of the Hosei University in Tokyo. The topic of the workshop was to study the concept of public housing in the 21st century using the example of the Nishi-Yamato Danchi housing estate built in Tokyo in 1960–1970. The study used materials collected by the author – participant and observer of the workshops. The results of the research confirm the possibility of practical use of generally available resources of visualization of the earth’s surface obtained thanks to aerial and satellite remote sensing, as well as effective communication via the Internet during teaching activities. International design workshops broaden the participants’ knowledge of residential architecture, encourage the improvement of the quality of student education, and are also a source of research topics, for example on transcultural architecture.

Integrowanie projektowania i mechatroniki prowadzi ku nowej domenie architektury. Robotyka staje się obecna w twórczych procesach projektowania, modelowania i budowania architektury społeczeństwa wiedzy. Powstaje nowa architektura, która może reagować na zmienne warunki środowiska oraz zmienne wymagania funkcjonalne. Robotyka umożliwia współpracę projektanta i użytkownika w tych procesach. Wybrane przykłady świadczą, że fabrykacja i montaż elementów architektury z wykorzystaniem robotów jest zjawiskiem potencjalnie istotnym w przekształceniach miasta i jego architektury.
The new phenomena resulting from the integration of architecture and mechatronics are discussed. In the society of knowledge, design, modeling, fabricating and assembling of architecture with robotics can be seen as part of creative design process. The use of robotics and automation affects the practice and world of architecture. Fabrication and assembly of structures and elements of building using robots is an important phenomenon, as illustrated by the cited examples. Kinetic architecture becomes a form of interface that responds to changing conditions context and to dynamic user requirements.

Wymiaru teoretycznego współczesnej architektury można upatrywać w systemach generatywnych decydujących o kompozycji, harmonii oraz proporcjach formy przestrzennej dzieła architektury. Szukając historycznych podstaw tendencji generatywnych w architekturze i sztuce, autor przywołuje system artystyczny Katarzyny Kobro – współtwórczyni unizmu w rzeźbie i wybitnej artystki okresu międzywojennego w Polsce. Teoria czasoprzestrzeni w kompozycji rzeźbiarskiej i architektonicznej autorstwa Kobro ma dziś silne naukowe podstawy w projektowaniu. Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji systemu artystycznego rzeźbiarki z I połowy XX wieku w odniesieniu do zagadnień kompozycji architektury. Rezultatem pracy ma być ukazanie założeń teoretycznych twórczości artystycznej Kobro jako zapowiedzi pojawienia się sztuki generatywnej w Polsce. Okazuje się, iż wypracowany system artystyczny może być interpretowany jako proces podlegający modyfikacjom w sposób algorytmiczny. Obserwacja ta odnosi się do polskiego kierunku kształtowania sztuki generatywnej, który wciąż nie został kompleksowo zbadany i opisany. System twórczości Kobro operuje metodyką generatywną w kompozycji dzieła, zapowiadając jej szczególny rozwój w epoce cyfryzacji architektury i sztuki XXI wieku. W pracy przyjęto metodę indukcyjną w interpretacji sztuki oraz tekstów teoretycznych Katarzyny Kobro. Badania ikonograficzne prowadzono pod kątem umiejscowienia współczesnej sztuki generatywnej w Polsce, genezy jej powstania i przełożenia na architekturę najnowszą.
Theoretical dimension of contemporary architecture can be seen in generative systems which determine the composition, harmony, proportion of spatial form, works of architecture. In order to highlight historical roots generative trends in architecture and art, author evokes artistic system by Katarzyna Kobro – co-founder of unism in sculpture and the outstanding artist of the interwar period in Poland. The theory of space-time in the composition of sculpture and architecture developed by Kobro today has a very strong scientific foundation in design. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the art system according to artist referring to the issues of the composition and architecture forms. The result of the work is to show the theoretical assumptions of Kobro’s artistic creation as a preview of the emergence of generative art in Poland. It turns out that the developed artistic system can be interpreted as an algorithmic process way in design approach. This observation refers to the Polish direction of shaping generative art, which has still not been comprehensively researched and described. The Kobro creation system uses the generative methodology in the composition of the work, announcing its special development in the era of digitization of architecture and art of the 21st century. The inductive method in the interpretation of Katarzyna Kobro’s art and theoretical texts were adopted. The iconographic research was conducted in terms of the location of contemporary generative art in Poland, the genesis of its creation and translating into the latest architecture.

The goal of the study was to present the process and the effects of digital reconstruction of unrealised architectural projects for Wrocław. The subject of the research were the projects by renowned architects such as Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak, Stefan Müller, Zenon Prętczyński, Andrzej Frydecki. The visualisations are the first attempt of digital reconstructions based on preserved incomplete archival plans. The attempt was presented as a process aimed at presenting original design ideas in new light, allowing realistic presentation of the buildings in the surroundings, they were designed for. The authors of the article tried to reconstruct the proportions of buildings, their locations, relations with context and textures they were meant to be finished with. The article presents the most intriguing aspects of the work and the difficulties of the research. The authors based their work not only on the archival projects but also on the architectural tendencies they are clearly rooted in. The presentation of the projects in the form of visualisations allows better understanding of the original architectural goals of their designers and the opens new perspective at the post-war modern architecture.
Celem artykułu było przedstawienie procesu i efektu odtwarzania cyfrowego niezrealizowanych koncepcji architektonicznych dla Wrocławia. Przedmiotem pracy były projekty takich architektów jak Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak, Stefan Müller, Zenon Prętczyński, Andrzej Frydecki. Przygotowane wizualizacje są pierwszą próbą odtworzenia projektów na podstawie niepełnych materiałów archiwalnych. Próba ta została ukazana jako proces, którego celem jest przybliżenie oryginalnych idei projektowych w nowym ujęciu, pozwalającym na rzeczywiste przedstawienie ich kontekście, w którym miały powstać. Podczas pracy autorzy artykułu starali się zarówno odtworzyć proporcje budynków, ich lokalizację, relacje z otoczeniem, jak i materiały, jakimi miały być wykończone. W artykule omówiono też najbardziej intrygujące zagadnienia i trudności związane z badaniem. Opierano się nie tylko na koncepcjach, ale także na ówczesnych tendencjach projektowych, w których dane koncepcje są wyraźnie zakorzenione. Ukazanie projektów za pomocą wizualizacji pozwala na lepsze zrozumienie założeń architektonicznych przyjętych przez ich autorów, a także spojrzenie na krajobraz miasta z perspektywy powojennych projektantów.

W artykule przybliżono tematykę minimalistycznych rewitalizacji wnętrz sakralnych Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego w oparciu o selekcję reprezentatywnych przykładów, zdywersyfikowanych pod względem geograficznym i kulturowym. Wychodząc od założeń Soboru Watykańskiego II oraz zmian artysty-cznych i społeczno-kulturowych, które zaobserwować można już w XIX wieku, artykuł analizuje czynniki, które doprowadziły do skrajnej redukcji formalnej w wystroju kościołów. Poza oczywistą kwestią, jaką jest architektura wnętrz, podjęty zostaje namysł nad sposobem eksponowania sztuki, którą stanową zarówno element kultowy, jak i estetyczny. Wzięto również pod uwagę czynniki prawne, aspekty liturgiczne oraz psychologiczne. Do analizy problemu wykorzystano realizacje i projekty z kręgu architektury europejskiej.
This text explores the subject of minimalist renovations in the sacred interiors of the Roman Catholic Church, based on a selection of representative examples, geographically and culturally diversified. Starting from the assumptions of the Second Vatican Council and the artistic and socio-cultural changes that could be observed as early as the 19th century, the article analyses the factors that led to an extreme formal reduction in church decoration. Apart from the obvious issue of interior architecture, a reflection is undertaken on the way in which art, which is both a cult and an aesthetic element, is displayed. Legal factors, liturgical and psychological aspects are also taken into account. To analyse the problem, realisations and projects from the circle of European architecture have been used.

Artykuł prezentuje główne założenia projektowe, omówienie zakresu i wyników badań w ramach projektu dydaktycznego project-based learning o nazwie: Interdyscyplinarna koncepcja domu mieszkalnego opartego na IDEI 4E - czyli rozwiązaniach energooszczędnych, ekologicznych, ergonomicznych oraz ekonomicznych. Jego głównym celem było opracowanie koncepcji modelowego domu mieszkalnego zakładającego rozwiązania energooszczędne, ekologiczne, ergonomiczne oraz ekonomiczne. Projekt ten został poprzedzony badaniami przedprojektowymi o charakterze interdyscyplinarnym. W zakresie architektury i urbanistyki zostały wykonane badania identyfikacji potrzeb użytkowych, analizy ergonomiczne, urbanistyczne oraz analiza nasłonecznienia. W zakresie budownictwa badania objęły analizy optymalnych rozwiązań technologicznych, konstrukcyjnych i materiałowych, a także podłoża gruntowego. W zakresie inżynierii środowiska i energetyki wykonano analizy rozwiązań systemowych dotyczących nowoczesnej energetyki.
This article presents the main design principles, scope and research results of a Project-based Learning entitled: Interdisciplinary concept of a dwelling house based on IDEI 4E – i.e. energy-efficient, ecological, ergonomic and economical solutions. Its main objective was to develop a concept for a model dwelling house with energy-saving, ecological, ergonomic and economical solutions. The project was preceded by interdisciplinary pre-design studies. In the field of architecture and urban planning, research was carried out into the identification of user needs, ergonomics and urban planning analyses, and a solar exposure analysis. In the field of construction, studies included analyses of optimal technological, structural and material solutions and the subsoil. In the field of environmental and energy engineering, analyses of system solutions for modern energy were carried out.

Proces kształcenia przyszłych architektów na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Śląskiej oparty jest na tematach projektowych, które realizowane są w ramach współpracy naukowo-badawczej z podmiotami zewnętrznymi. Research-based design, czyli projektowanie oparte na badaniach naukowych, to proces innowacyjny zmierzający w efekcie do opracowania doskonałego projektu, opartego na wiedzy projektantów o użytkownikach. W artykule zaprezentowano przykład takiej współpracy w zakresie dwóch projektów realizowanych w 2018 oraz 2020 roku dla Wojewódzkiego Szpitala Specjalistycznego nr 3 w Rybniku. Współpraca dotyczyła projektów wnętrz oraz systemu komunikacji wizualnej oddziału pediatrii oraz oddziału onkologii tego szpitala. W obu tematach założono, że objęta opracowaniem przestrzeń oddziałów ma poprawić komfort pacjentów i realizować założenia tzw. środowiska terapeutycznego [3]. W ramach dwóch projektów zostały przeprowadzone konkursy studenckie na projekty dla obu oddziałów. Nagrodzony projekt dla oddziału pediatrii został zrealizowany w 2019 roku, natomiast dla oddziału onkologii konkurs studencki rozstrzygnięto w 2020 roku i jest planowany do realizacji.
Overview of the design process and selected solutions. The process of education of future architects at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology (Politechnika Śląska) is based on real-life design projects. They are implemented within the framework of research collaboration with external entities. The so-called research-based design is an innovative process aiming to develop a perfect design which is based on the designers’ knowledge of the users. The article presents an example of the collaboration within the scope of two research projects implemented in 2018 and 2020 for the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital no. 3 in the city of Rybnik. Both projects were concerned with the design of the interiors and the system of visual communication in the Ward of Paediatrics and Ward of Oncology in the above-mentioned hospital. The assumption of both designs was that the space of the wards should meet the requirements of the healing environment. Contests for the students’ best designs of the hospital wards were held. The design for the Ward of Paediatrics, which was awarded the First Prize, was implemented in 2019, whereas the winning design in the contest for the Ward of Oncology was announced in 2020 and is going to be implemented.
