The twentieth century in the Catholic Church was the age of martyrs and witnesses to the faith. One of such witness is Archbishop Teofilius Matulionis, who was born in Lithuania, worked in Russia for a long time and spent many years in Soviet camps. The bishop was a man of prayer and a great organizer of the spiritual life, faithful to his vocation, obedient to the Apostolic Throne, and scarifying. Although Theophilus Matulionis did not lack for suffering in his life, he was always a witness to the Gospel, matured in the virtues of faith, love, and hope. His life and deeds were appreciated by Pope Francis declaring him blessed.

Archbishop Radzim-Gaudenty, half-brother of St. Adalbert, was the first Metropolitan of the Diocese of Gniezno. Little is known about his life and work, even the date of his death is uncertain. This lack of information is connected with scarce historical sources. In this article the author reviewed the Old Polish historical sources which reveal the information about Archbishop Radzim-Gaudenty. The oldest Polish chronicles, among others, Gallus Anonymus or Wincenty Kadłubek, are silent on the matter of this hierarch. Only in the 15th century Jan Długosz in his works published a lot of information about him. In the 16th century the following authors wrote about the Metropolitan: Maciej Karpiga from Miechów, Marcin Kromer, Stanisław Orzechowski, Jan Herburt, Maciej Stryjkowski, Marcin Bielski, Piotr Skarga, Bartosz Paprocki. In the 17th century the history of the Archbishop was presented by Szymon Staropolski, Szymon Okolski, Stanisław Łubieński, Stefan Damalewicz, Piotr Hiacynt Pruszcz, Stanisław Sczygielski vel Szczygielski, Andrzej Olszowski and Stanisław Bużeński. In the 18th century the issues connected with the life of the Bishop can be found in the works of Jerzy Schwengl, Florian Jacek Jaroszewicz, Franciszek Rzepnicki, Kasper Niesiecki, Gotfryd Lengnich and Adam Naruszewicz.

In 2023, the Rev. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski Archdiocesan Music School in Krakow celebrates its 25th anniversary. The present article discusses the history of the institu[1]tion – the activities of the Archdiocesan Organist Study Centre, from which the jubilarian school originated, the circumstances of the creation of the Archdiocesan Organist School in 1998 and the expansion of its activities in 2006 to the Archdiocesan Primary and Sec[1]ondary School of Music. Through the analysis of documents from the school’s archives, the prospects for the development of students and the activities of teachers are presented. The enormous role in the history of the school played by three people is also outlined – Prof. Wiesław Delimat, the school’s founder and headmaster, Rev. Prof. Robert Tyrała, the current Rector of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, and above all Rev. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, patron and good spirit of Archdiocesan Music School

This article by a Slovak theologian who has lived in the Czech Republic for twenty years provides a wide public with a profile of the personality of Cardinal František Tomášek, the Czech Primate, who died twenty years ago. The study is divided into three main chapters, which are intended to give the public a comprehensive picture of a man, who clearly influenced the running of the Catholic Church over several decades, but also society in former Czechoslovakia. The first chapter outlines a brief chronology of the teacher – arch (bishop) cardinal, acquainting the reader with a distinguished man, a European personality, which is exactly what the unforgettable František Tomášek was. The middle chapter focusses on the significant, decisive and influential moments for the spiritual father of the nation, which were crucial for the establishment of the freedom of the whole of Czechoslovakia and in which we can recognize the pinnacle of the archbishop’s life. The third and last chapter outlines the specific personality traits of the Czech Cardinal, based on his exceptionality which is worth following.

Im Artikel zum Thema der Formulierung transivit per manus in den mittelalterlichen Dokumenten der Gnesener Erzbischöfe stellt die Verfasserin fest, diese Diplome seien arm an Kanzleinotationen. Von den fast 400 gedruckt veröffentlichten Dokumenten besitzen nur etwa 90 Kanzleinotationen. Die meisten Kanzleinotationen stammen aus der zweiten Hälfte des 14. und vom Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts. Die Formulierung transivit per manus gehörte zu den wichtigsten Kanzleinotationen in den Dokumenten der Gnesener Erzbischöfe und war eng verbunden mit der Organisation der erzbischöflichen Kanzlei im Spätmittelalter.

The article is devoted to the textology of the Introductions to every Gospel written by St. Theophylact, Archbishop of Bulgaria, in two early printed Cyrillic tetraevangelions issued in Kiev in 1697 and 1712. All textological variants characteristic only to these two earliest kievian editions that are presented in this publication prove that these four texts, that precede every Gospel book, undergone redaction (especially the first and the fourth).

During four decades of his service in the Church, Valentin Felixovich Voino-Yasenetsky (Archbishop Luke of Simferopol and Crimea) delivered numerous sermons, most of which were recorded. Later, they began to appear in the form of publications and became the object of research by representatives of various scientific disciplines. In his sermons, apart from other issues, the preacher paid special attention to the family and education of the younger generation. This article is an attempt to analyze the religious discourse of the Archbishop, using the example of the sermon “On the family and education of children”, delivered by him on 13 October 1947. The author of the sermon adheres to the traditional point of view on marriage and raising children. And this can be confirmed not only by the texts of his sermons, but also by the lifepath the preacher took himself. In this text, Archbishop Luke, in the classical tradition of quotations from the Bible, expresses his attitude towards the issues raised and offers solutions to them. If we take into account the processes going on in the modern world (new views on the institution of marriage, devaluation of marriage and the family, the reluctance of parents to take care of their own children, shifting of responsibility for raising children to other people or state institutions and organizations), it should be noted that, despite the fact that the sermon was delivered more than 70 years ago, it has not lost its relevance and can serve as a reference book for spouses and parents, as revealed by the analysis of the preacher’s discourse. Taking into account the peculiarities of the analyzed genre, the author of this article attempts to look at the text of the sermon from the theolinguistic perspective and, consequently, applies the theolinguistic approach in the process of its analysis and description.

Based on historical facts, published and unpublished archival materials, this work provides concise analysis of relations between the Church and the state in Croatia between 1945 and 1952, that is from the period when the Communist Party of Yugoslavia became the ruling party until the break-up of diplomatic relations with the Holy See. Since this was a quite dynamic period in terms of socio-political changes, as well as Church-state relations, the article emphasizes only those aspects that constitute the foundation of the conflict between the Catholic Church and the communist regime such as religious education in schools and catholic clergy’s class associations. Moreover, in the introductory part of the work ideological and political causes of the conflict are briefly explained, as well as relations of the Church and the state in the post-war period with a view to better understanding of the position of the Catholic Church and the overall context of the catholic religious life in time to come.

The statutes of the vicars of the Gniezno cathedral were composed at the turn of the 15th and 16th century and were in their entirety drawn up by the chapter on 22 June 1499. It was the initiative of Archbishop Fryderyk Jagiellończyk, who was concerned about an unsatisfactory functioning of the College. The initiative was carried out by Klemens from Piotrków, doctor decretalium, a Gniezno canon. On 9 December 1500 the statutem were authorized by Cardinal Fryderyk Jagiellończyk with the chapter and he commanded to have them entered in the matrica capitulari. The statutes survivedto our time in a copy made in the 1720s. Description of offenses and the system of punishments in the statues reveal the daily matters and some of the deficiencies of the College: absence from liturgical ministry, drunkenness, quarrels, irregularities of the officium Divinum, careless celebration of choral prayer, conversations and jokes during chants, drowsiness.

After World War II had ended, the Soviet authorities expelled the Metropolitan Archbishop of Vilnius Romuald Jałbrzykowski from Vilnius. He ended up in Białystok, where he established the structures of the local Church known today as the Archdiocese of Białystok. Persecuted and imprisoned by the NKVD, Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski did not forget the priests of the Archdiocese of Vilnius, who were detained, imprisoned, and/or sent to labor camps in the summer of 1945. He made efforts to work with the Polish People’s Republic to release those who were being detained. The leaders of the Communist Party in Poland considered the archbishop an enemy of the socialist regime that prevailed in Poland after World War II had ended.

Metropolita zabiegał o właściwe miejsce lekcji religii w szkole, troszczył się o współpracę środowisk katechetycznych, rozwijał szkolnictwo katolickie. Poprzez reorganizację organów kurialnych i utworzenie Wydziału Wychowania Katolickiego dążył do tego, aby posługa katechetyczna była realizowana na jak najwyższym poziomie dla dobra Ludu Bożego nad Odrą i Bałtykiem.
The seven years of ministerial service of Archbishop Marian Przykucki marked a period of abounding catechetical ventures. The Metropolitan Archbishop strived to ensure a proper venue for religious education at school and partnership of catechetical environments, as well as was committed to the development of Catholic education. He attempted to ensure the highest level of catechetical service by means of the reorganisation of curias and the creation of The Faculty of Catholic Education for the good of the People of God upon the Oder and the Baltic Sea.

As a result of the partitions of Poland about 60% of the faithful of the Uniate Church, which was set up at the Council of Brest in 1596, became inhabitants of the Russian Empire. Since then, the situation of Uniates in that country was largely determined by the attitude of the successive rulers of Russia to this Church. Empire's approach to the Uniate Church changed completely with the enthronement of Tsar Nicholas I (1825-1855). His main helper, a person who played a key role in the return of many Uniates to Orthodoxy, was archbishop Joseph Siemaszko (1798-1868), son of the Uniate priest and initially also Uniate priest. In February 1839, at the day of feast of Triumph of Orthodoxy, in Polotsk (Belorussia) a meeting of the Council of Bishops of the Uniate Church took place. At this meeting, held under the chairmanship of archbishop Siemaszko, the return of the Uniates, that lived on the Western territories of the Russian Empire, to the Orthodox Church was announced. Participants of the meeting also asked Tsar Nicholas I to connect Uniates to Orthodoxy faster. As a result, more than one and a half million Uniates from both Belorussian and Lithuanian Dioceses had been faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church. Orthodox Church memebers became also three bishops, over 1.500 priests, over 200 monks as well as 1.227 parishes. Within the borders of the Russian Empire Uniate Church officially stopped existing, although in practice the process of converting Uniates to Orthodoxy in the Belorussian and Lithuanian lands lasted until 1915.
W wyniku rozbiorów Rzeczypospolitej około 60% wiernych Kościoła unickiego, powołanego do życia na soborze brzeskim 1596 roku, znalazła się w granicach Cesarstwa Rosyjskiego. Od tej pory sytuacja unitów w tym państwie w znacznej mierze uwarunkowana była stosunkiem kolejnych władców Rosji do tego Kościoła. Podejście Cesarstwa do Kościoła unickiego zmieniło się całkowicie wraz z wstąpieniem na tron cara Mikołaja I (1825-1855). Sprzymierzeńcem cara i osobą, która odegrała kluczową rolę w powrocie wielu unitów do prawosławia odegrał arcybiskup Józef Siemaszko (1798-1868), syn unickiego duchownego i początkowo unicki duchowny. W lutym 1839 r. w dniu prawosławnego święta Triumfu Ortodoksji w Połocku na Białorusi miało miejsce posiedzenie Soboru Biskupów Kościoła unickiego. Podczas tego spotkania, odbywającego się pod przewodnictwem arcybiskupa Siemaszko został ogłoszony powrót unitów zamieszkujących zachodnie rubieże Cesarstwa Rosyjskiego na łono Kościoła prawosławnego. Uczestnicy spotkania zwrócili się też z prośbą do cara Mikołaja I o szybsze przyłączenie unitów do prawosławia. W rezultacie tego, ponad półtora miliona unitów z diecezji białoruskiej i litewskiej zostało wiernymi Rosyjskiego Kościoła Prawosławnego. Na prawosławie przeszło też 3 biskupów, ponad 1500 duchownych, ponad 200 zakonników, i 1227 parafii. W granicach Cesarstwa Rosyjskiego unia oficjalnie przestała istnieć, chociaż w praktyce proces przechodzenia unitów na prawosławie na ziemiach białoruskich i litewskich trwał aż do 1915 roku.
