- Scientific studies and observations of the negative consequences of so-called tree surgery changed of the range and manner of tree cultivation. A new trend known as arboristics (from 'arboricultura') has been developed on a global scale. Posts of tree controllers have been established in urban plant boards. Suitable courses are being conducted not only by vocational schools and engineering colleges, but M.A. studies on arboristics are being set up. Tree cultivation has entirely abandoned invasion operations, which disturb natural defensive mechanisms. At the same time, preference is being shown for operations improving the trees' habitat. Trees of particular value, both dendrologically and as regards composition, have been entrusted to the administrative supervision of conservators of historical monuments. In numerous voivodeships, however, they still remain in the hands of craftsmen who have at their disposal insufficient resources of knowledge. Numerous so-called surgical operations have produced outright harmful effects. More the reason for an urgent verification of the principles of tree treatment.
