The article reveals the contents of methodological approaches to teaching foreign languages. Based on the author’s research, it gives analysis of the basic and the most advantageous approaches to teaching the prosody of a foreign language. The author briefly provides the foundations for classifying lingua-didactic approaches, and, using a comparative analysis of the existing approaches to foreign language teaching, proves the advantage of implementing the activity and functional approaches in teaching the prosody of a foreign language. The author highlights the necessity of integrating lingua-didactic approaches at the crossroads of adjacent sciences, with universal laws of speech prosody formation and specific features of a given foreign language in focus.
W artykule prezentowane jest sedno podejścia metodycznego oraz analiza podstawowych i najbardziej perspektywicznych podejść w nauczaniu prozodii języków obcych. Autor przedstawia podstawy dla klasyfikacji podejść lingwodydaktycznych z wykorzystaniem analizy porównawczej podejść już istniejących w nauczaniu języków obcych, udowadnia skuteczność aktywnego i funkcjonalnego podejść w nauczaniu prozodii. Omawiając podejścia lingwodydaktyczne autor zwraca szczególną uwagę na uniwersalne lingwistyczne zasady kształtowania mowy oraz cechy szczególne konkretnego języka obcego.

It is possible to monitor effects related to flow in a jet aircraft engine by the three basic approaches - analytical, numerical and experimental Each approach has undergone changes and has been developed to the stage of its effective use. To efficiently manage the scientific and research work it is appropriate to use effective links among all three basic approaches. An experimental approach requires a test stand on which the characteristics of a usually geometrically reduced object or the actual object itself are verified. The principles of geometric and hydrodynamic similarities are applied. This approach is time and economically demanding and not all aerodynamic processes can be reliably simulated. Other disaavantages can be the occurrence of measurement errors, errors due to changes in the scale, influences of chemical reactions and influence of Reynolds number. Due to a very fast onset, development and challenges of IT, the numerical approach has become mostly used. It can provide sufficient information on an examined phenomenon in a particular object. It does not need any substantial simpliflcations, it is less financially demanding than the experimental approach, but it needs efficient processors with a huge memory capacity. Its disadvantage is a relatively large dependence of achieved results accuracy on the perfection of numerical models and models of turbulence in the areas with prevailing influence ofviscosity. The usage ofanalytical relations from mathematical andphysical analysis of the flow fleld is the fundamental of the analytical approach of observing the laws related to flowing. The paper deals with possibilities, procedures, advantages, and disadvantages of the mentioned approaches together with a presentation of some results from research and development activities carried out by the authors.

The following is a qualitative case study investigating the writing approaches that are evident when a group of ESL students were to complete their narrative writing task in the Facebook environment. Six students and a teacher interacted in the Facebook environment to revise and improve the quality of their essays. Data in this study were derived from the online interaction archives and scores of the narrative essays. Drawing on qualitative data of the online interactions, product and genre approaches were evident. Process approach did not appear in the findings although time and space were available for students and the teacher to communicate with their peers and teacher. The implication of this study is that the teacher should also be given a checklist when they are engaged in online writing activities. Also it is important for teachers to consider the different level of thinking skills based on Bloom’s Taxonomy while guiding students to write their essays. There were also emerging themes that were related to students’ confidence and duration of task.

All around the world many people suffer from the lack of sufficient income, well-being or good health. Who among the poor should we help first? Some of the most influential research on poverty has been developed by a famous economist and philosopher Amartya K. Sen. This article is concerned with the problem of reciprocal relations between various concepts and theories of poverty, kinds of ethics and taking decisions about helping poor people. According to Sen, while taking decisions to help the poor we should base our arguments on the capability approach rather than on the basic needs approach, on the entitlement approach rather than the food availability decline, and on the capability rights system rather than utilitarianism.

The paper proposes a model of rhetoric based on the theoretical and methodological framework of constructivist positions on knowledge and discourse. The main claim is that the ideological meaning, and specifi cally of political discourse, can be analyzed from a dual perspective, ‘socio-cognitive’ and 'rhetorical-constructivist’. Such an analysis shows that the construction of meaning is inseparable from the deliberate choice made by the agent in communicative practices. The paper claims that rhetoric should return to its origins as a tool for citizens, and that it could become an important instrument for explaining the conflicts of current social and political discourse.

The paper analyses the question of comparability of results that arise from application of the production and intermediation approach in practical efficiency measurement in banking. Its goal is to assess the comparability or congruence of efficiency scores yielded by these two approaches when applied in a case study of Slovak commercial banks for a period of 11 years between 2005 and 2015, using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The paper acknowledges that the chief distinction between the two approaches residing in the treatment of deposits passes into the resulting efficiency scores and troubles their comparability.

A poetic cycle is a specific case of poetic contextualisation and for translators this means additional efforts in identifying the micro- and macro-level network of functional and semantic links. Joseph Brodsky’s cycle A Part of Speech represents a highly conceptual approach and strong integration of each and every poem. In this context the paper briefly outlines different types of micro- and macroscopic approaches to poetry translation. Further practical analysis of some translation issues observed in the respective English and Latvian translations show that decisions of poetry translators are informed by different backgrounds in the author-text-reader relationships. Artistic creativity is certainly present in the translation activity but this does not mean that a completely independent target text is produced.

The problem of proper understanding of the space and time is one of the most enduring issues in the history of Western metaphysics. The article shows how Gottfried W. Leibniz approached them in the context of his broad relational stance in the metaphysics of nature and presents acute differences between this stance and the absolutivist-Newtonian view of space and time. Finally, some relevance of this controversy to the modern physics is pointed out.

Terms are at the centre of terminology work as defined in ISO 1087-2019: identifying them in texts and finding equivalents for them in different languages is pivotal. This can, however, pose a challenge. Proceeding from the classical theory of the term as a linguistic representation of a concept “stable” over time, shared by domain experts, and built by specific differentiation, this paper presents an ontology-based method to identify terms and find equivalents. By representing all concepts of a subject field in a computer-readable form, we obtain an ontology that represents all identified concepts within the domain as well as the observable relationships among them. The method is applied to a portion of the domain of the balance of payments and international investment position. The paper shows how building an ontology using TEDI (ontoTerminology EDItor) can help to identify terms and find equivalents. The approach is semasiological – the work is corpus-based – as well as onomasiological – it relies on inputs by domain experts regarding both the linguistic and the conceptual dimensions.

The social and geographical mobility, including international migration, interlink and interplay but are approached by different research methods. This article makes an effort to combine these approaches of researching mobility. The studies on social and occupational mobility of migrants may relate to, at least, three dimensions: (1) between sending and receiving countries (a comparison of the pre-departure and during migration socio-occupational positions of migrants); (2) in the receiving country (socio-occupational positions of migrants are compared to those of natives); (3) in the sending country (a comparison of the pre-on-post migration socio-occupational positions of migrants). The article considers the third approach. First part relates to the critical analysis of various approaches of researching social mobility and international mobility. In the following, as based on the nearly two decades of studies of Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, various options of analyses of occupational careers of international migrants have been presented. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches have been taken into account in this article. Therefore, this article made possible an analysis of pros and cons of both approaches and brought an evidence that they complement each other while studying occupational careers of migrants.

One of the main views which appears throughout prof. Pawlak's paper is one initially expressed by Anna Zofia Krygowska, the most influential researcher of mathematics education in Poland. According to this view - the teacher and his preparation, and thus the problems of teaching mathematics, are never "ahistorical" (Krygowska, 1981, as quoted by Pawlak, 2019). In other words, the problems of mathematics education cannot be viewed outside of their historical and cultural contexts. Practically, this means that when we design our teacher training courses, we cannot, e.g., ignore the current scientifc and societal developments and especially the increased use of mobile technologies even for everyday purposes. Prof. Pawlak recognizes this issue and suggests using technology as an aid to motivate students. This brings us to the second overarching view of the paper, namely the importance of motivating students to be involved in mathematics.

This paper argues that neither the relational approach nor the non-relational approach to global justice is at once necessary and sufficient to deal with complex cases of global (in)justice. In this intervention in the dispute between relational and non-relational approaches, the aim of the paper is not to support one side and oppose the other, but to combine both approaches in order to arrive at a more robust approach. Using the strengths of the relational approach to compensate for the weaknesses of the non-relational approach and vice versa, the aim of the paper is to set out a mixed, combinatorial or synthetic approach that will be used to address complex cases of global (in)justice. Rather thandiscussing how the synthetic approach applies to a particular complex case of global (in)justice, the paper shows how a synthetic approach that intends to address complex cases of global (in)justice will look like. Perhaps, colloquially in Hegelian dialectics, the relational approach can be seen as a thesis, the non-relational approach as an antithesis and the combination of both approaches as a synthesis.
