    Applied Theatre is an inclusive term used to host a variety of powerful, community-based participatory processes and educational practices. Historically, Applied Theatre practices include Theatre-in-Education (TiE), Theatre-in-Health Education (THE), Theatre for Development (TfD), prison theatre, community theatre, theatre for conflict resolution/reconciliation, reminiscence theatre with elderly people, theatre in museums, galleries and heritage centres, theatre at historic sites, and more recently, theatre in hospitals. In this paper we are positioning the application of recreational dramatic activities with older adults (55+) under Applied Theatre and we are exploring the benefits they offer to the participants. We are concerned that their health and wellbeing in western societies is not prioritized and it is clear that loneliness in particular is a current and ongoing issue. We will present research results from a drama dissertation study that took place in a community hall in the South East England where drama is placed at the core of their practice with old populations. Data was collected by a mixed method (semi-structured interviews and semi-immersive observations) and was critically discussed amongst the authors to conclude that attending recreational drama classes brings a certain degree of happiness, social belonging and improvement of interaction with others to old people’s lives.

    The article raises the issue of research in artistic expression and creativity used in therapy. Such research requires an interdisciplinary approach combining the humanities (art studies) and the social studies (pedagogy, psychology, sociology), which causes issues with implementing a consistent research perspective. The author points out a few issues, called “sensitive areas”, and analyses them in relation to the disabled people theatre. These are: the presentation status of such groups, the dangers of subjectivism or the necessity of implementing the qualitative research model, the methods of research documentation.

    Andrzej Wirth, a 20th century Polish essayist, philosopher and theatre critic, is one of the often forgotten theatre and drama scholars in Poland, perhaps due to his long life in exile. A recognized expert in theatre studies and philosophy, he has lectured at many universities around the world, especially in the United States and Europe. He gained particular recognition as the founder and director of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen in Germany. The aim of this article is to introduce Wirth’s personality, outline his life between cultures and highlight his importance for the development of theatre studies in Germany, as well as his great contribution to the promotion of Polish literature in Germany in the mid-20th century. Andrzej Wirth’s life was beyond borders and divisions, although with a particular attachment to the culture of his homeland and Germany; he was rooted in childhood memories and a desire for theatre as a liberated art in an age of evolving media technologies.

    Artykuł jest próbą spojrzenia na teatr szkolny jako element szerszej struktury, jaką jest kultura szkoły. Podstawą przyjętego punktu wyjścia jest przekonanie, że teatr ów można: 1) osadzić w działaniach performatywnych, co wymaga traktowania go jak części doświadczenia uczestników kultury szkoły, 2) jest wyrazem interakcyjności kultury szkoły, co przejawia się w różnorodnym charakterze teatru szkolnego na przestrzeni czasu. Tekst prezentuje zmienne cele teatru szkolnego uzależnione od kontekstów społeczno-kulturowych. Szczególną uwagę autorka poświęca czasom dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, które uważane są za jedne z najbardziej rewolucyjnych w praktyce i podglądach na teatr szkolny. Dziedzictwo tamtych czasu nie jest jednak wykorzystane. Przywołane niedawne badania i raporty dotyczące edukacji teatralnej dzieci prezentują obraz nikłej aktywności uczniów w sferze pracy w szkolnym teatrze, co jest uwarunkowane m.in. współczesnym nastawieniem na szybki i spektakularny sukces oraz na kształtowanie postaw odbiorczych.
    This article is an attempt to look at school theatre as a part of a broader structure that is school culture. The basis of the accepted starting point is the belief that the theatre can be: 1) set in performative activities, which require treating it as part of the experience of school culture participants, 2) an expression of the interaction of school culture, which manifests itself in the variety of school theatre over time. The text presents the changing goals of school theatre based on socio-cultural contexts. Particular attention is given to the author of the twentieth-century period, which is considered to be one of the most revolutionary in practice and a preview of school theatre. However, the legacy of those times is not used. Recent research and reports on theatrical education of children present a picture of the low activity of pupils in the field of school theatre work. A contemporary attitude results from the desire of a rapid and spectacular success and to shaping the receiving attitudes.
