    The paper presents the strategy of refocalization in apocryphal ekphrases and ekphrastic apocrypha, and more specifically, the shift from the perspective that dominates the original painting into the perspective and narrative that are valid in the literary text(s) inspired by this painting. The precise subject of this study are works related to Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp – Jacek Dehnel’s Po wyjściu malarza, Jacek Kaczmarski’s Lekcja anatomii (według Rembrandta), Nina Siegal’s Anatomy Lesson and a fragment of the W.G. Seblad’s novel The Rings of Saturn.

    The paper discusses refocalization as a strategy of rewriting in the literary apocrypha (D. Szajnert). Refocalization, that is based on G. Genette and H. Jenkins’ conclusions, refers to the shift from the perspective and narrative that dominates canonical works into perspective and narrative predominant in the literary apocrypha of the canonical works. As the subject of research I chose the apocrypha of the Homeric epics (M. Atwood’s The Penelopiad and Ch. Wolf’s Cassandra) in which patriarchal, omniscient narrative is replaced by perspective and narrative of women marginalized in the epic.

    This paper is a close-reading of Joyce Carol Oates’ short story The Woman in the Window inspired by Edward Hopper’s 11 A.M. An extensive narrative, which is overwritten over the painting and set in it’s space-time framework, enables the short story discussed herein to be considered as an ekphrastic apocryphon with subversive potential. Literary reaffirmation of the perspective of painted woman that is obviously omitted in Hopper’s masterpiece, allows for the alleged oppressiveness of the painting to be revealed.

    The term “Rewritten Bible” was introduced by Géza Vermes in 1961 to describe works from late Second Temple period that “retell” or “rewrite” Scriptures with characteristic changes. Since then, much has been written about this category of texts. Today some researchers are tired of discussing this concept, suggesting even a move away from the notion. Others, on the contrary, apply it to an increasing number of texts, including even works lying outside the specific context of late Second Temple Jewish literature. This article discusses the phenomenon of the “Rewritten Bible” (RewB) and takes up a polemic with certain approaches to the category, concerning terminology, scope, and character, as well as indication of the purposes of rewriting activity. The article shows that the category remains useful and important, within certain methodological clarifications.

    Ekfraza – literacka deskrypcja dzieła sztuki – nie jest, rzecz jasna, wyłącznie dokładnym opisem artefaktu; często dotyczy również tego, czego na obrazie nie ma. W ekfrazach dzieła sztuki ulegają czasem swoistemu „ożywieniu” – narratywizacji namalowanych scen, a także uzupełnieniu ich o przed- i „poakcje” czy też o wyobrażone wypowiedzi przedstawionych postaci. Artykuł dotyczy specyficznej formy takich literackich „ożywień”, czyli tekstów, których autorzy, wykorzystując prozopopeję, oddali głos bohaterom obrazów oraz świadomym swej sztuczności (i eksponującym ją) obrazom-przedmiotom. Ciekawym (i rozbudowanym) przykładem zastosowania prozopopei jest powieść Portret P. Assouline’a. Narrację prowadzi w niej namalowana przez J.A.D. Ingres’a Betty de Rothschild. W artykule omawiam sposób i sens zastosowania tej figury retorycznej w powieści Assouline’a i zastanawiam się nad tym, czy każdy tekst literacki, w którym narratorem (dzięki prozopopei) czyni się postać z obrazu, można nazwać ekfrazą.
    It stands to reason that ekphrasis cannot be limited to the detailed but plain description of the artifact, for it often concerns what is not there in the painting as well. Authors of the ekphrases sometimes “animate” or “revive” a work of art, which manifests itself in narrativization of painted scenes. The process is also frequently supplemented by its continuation or backstory and fictitious utterances of figures depicted in the painting. The paper discusses a specific literary form of that kind of “animation”, that is texts in which characters that can be seen in a painting (or paintings itself) receive the voice through the prosopopoeia and expose their selfawareness of “artificiality”. The precise subject of this study is P. Assouline’s novel Le Portrait which is narrated by baroness Betty de Rothschild, the figure from the J.A.D. Ingres’ painting. In this article, I am focusing on the mode and meaning of prosopopoeia in Assouline’s novel. I am also trying to examine whether every text that is based on the concept of a “speaking” work of art (i.e. in which prosopopoeia is used) can be described as ekphrasis.

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, jak w staropolskich narracjach biblijno-apokryficznych rozwijany był biblijny motyw Dobrego Łotra. Interesuje nas odpowiedź na pytanie, w jakim kontekście przywoływano ten wątek i czemu służył. Ze względu na łączenie się (para)biblijnego motywu Dobrego Łotra z ludowym motywem Madeja w centrum zainteresowania postawiliśmy zarówno wzajemne relacje między analizowanymi fragmentami apokryfów, jak i między tymi fragmentami a późniejszymi tekstami folkloru. Główny jednak nacisk położono na materiał staropolski.  
    The aim of the article is to show how the biblical motif of the Penitent Thief was developed in Old Polish biblical-apocryphal narratives. We are interested to know in what context this issue has been mentioned and what purpose it has served. Due to the merging of the (para)biblical motif of the Penitent Thief with the folk motif of Madej, we have focused on the interrelationships between the fragments of the Apocrypha analysed, as well as between these fragments and later folklore texts. However, the main focus is on the old Polish material.
