Epitomes are oen viewed as passive abridgements of major works. In practice, the situation is much more complex. e extant epitomes may include some pieces of information that are absent in the original source works. On this account, drawing conclusions on the source as based on its epitome can be very misleading.

Opis:
Roman propaganda monuments are known best of all and they are still often cited, especially in Hollywood blockbusters. Despite the many doubts expressed by modern researchers, they continue to be sources valuable in many aspects as those monuments, mostly located in the capital, show how military weapons were perceived by the inhabitants of the capital, including the sculptors who were working on these monuments. There are many images of so-called Attic helmets on Roman monuments dated back to the first two centuries AD. As a rule, all of them are richly decorated with embossed floral ornament, have a browband with volutes in the temporal region and equipped with longitudinal crests with gorgeous plumes. The question arises, what are the samples were depicted on the Roman reliefs? How accurately this specimen have been reproduced by artists and sculptors, or, perhaps, we see only a reflection of the Hellenistic artistic tradition? There are helmets with a browband shaped as a vertical fronton with volutes existed. Their later modification is presented by finds from Guisborough, Theilenhofen, Chalon-sur-Saône. The pieces of the Ist century AD – early IInd century AD are Weiler-type helmets with a decorated riveted browband. They are the helmets from Nijmegen, Brza Palanka and from other places. The pieces from Butzbach and Hallaton can be considered as a transitional design between early and later helmet modifications with a vertical fronton. Thus, all of the above finds suggest that Attic helmets with browbands, which are often depicted on Roman propaganda monuments, are not the sculptors’ invention, but helmets really common in the Roman imperial army, imitating the models of the earlier period.

Ancient myths from the Mediterranean Culture often become a language used to express current social and political anxieties. In the contemporary theatre ancient myths are deconstructed and subverted according to the postmodern dialogue with tradition. Aesthetic changes are accompanied by the ideological modifications. This obviously crisis position of myth is associated with the method of de-contextualization when a mythical plot or just a mythical character is involved in the (post)modern political background. This paper is to analyse three theatre productions from Polish theatre (Iphigenia by Antonina Grzegorzewska, 2008; Oresteia by Michał Zadara, 2010; Antigone by Marcin Liber, 2013) which adapt the most political ancient myths of Atreides and Labdacides’ families. Authors will present the ancient literary context of these myths (Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus) and compare it with the contemporary stage adaptations. Political issues which will be discussed concern 1) global terrorism threat; 2) communism; 3) political usage of dead heroes and enemies – post-memory; 4) wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; 5) Nazi genocide; 6) media management of death. All these current problems constitute a deconstructed background for ancient myths and authors will consider whether this procedure creates an empty mythical mask for performance or, conversely, it enriches a source meaning of ancient myth.

Opis:
Galileo in Poland: a 17th-century Latin Translation of the Proposta della longitudine The relationship between Galileo and Poland is a particularly obscure chapter of the Florentine’s extraordinary intellectual biography. Currently, our knowledge of this important connection remains limited to the 19th-century studies of Artur Wołyński and that of Bronisław Biliński in 1969. In light of this important yet neglected field, this article examines a previously unknown Latin version of the Proposta della longitudine, printed in Cracow in 1642. Currently preserved in a single manuscript copy at the National Library in Florence, this brief tract represents an exemplar of Galileo’s work that circulated handwritten in early modern Italy. Printed in Cracow, the Proposta is the only translation of Galileo’s work in Poland during the seventeenth century, and represents a missing piece in the greater puzzle of the personal and professional relations Galileo established with Polish intellectual circles. This Latin translation is not only a bibliographical rarity; it is a cultural product that unlocks new perspectives from which to analyze the relationship between the non-Italian reception of the vicissitudes of Galileo’s personal and intellectual journey, and that of the scientist himself. As in other European regions, Polish attitudes towards Italian literary products were such as to give them prominence in light of the “function and power of innovation” (Davide Conrieri). The translation of the Proposta della longitudine, printed some thirty years after its original draft, thus provided an opportunity, at least in the conception of its sponsor and translator, to launch a debate of significant public interest.

This article outlines the importance of asking questions in learning as it is presented in the beginnings of Greek philosophy: with the three Milesians (Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes), in the Socratic and Platonic dialogues as well as in Aristotle. From the beginning, Greek philosophy was connected with asking questions to  itself. The first philosophical question was the question about the ἀρχή. It served to demythologize and had an epistemological character. The meaning of the question about the ἀρχή was differentiated according to the meaning of the term ἀρχή. However, regardless of these differences, the question aimed to clarify the whole reality had to be sought outside of the facts, according to understanding. While with the Milesians we are dealing with the “fact” of asking questions with Socrates and later with Plato the question was clearly incorporated into the method of arriving at questions. The dialectic, that "game" of question and answer, was with Socrates and later with Plato a confrontation between one and another soul and initially served to find the truth together. In the field of elenctics the question played a therapeutic role, but in the field of maieutics it played a stimulating role. The Socratic dialectic did not concern material reality, but the human imagination of reality and led to new knowledge that was purely intellectual. According to Plato's teaching, the question was a means of getting to what is intelligible, i.e., to the idea. Knowledge became memory, anamnesis, and the impulse for remembering the idea was, among other things, the question. We find the beginning of the theory of the question in Aristotle's writings on logic. He did this in the context of the syllogism and the theory of doctrine. He saw the question as building material for any discussion. He distinguished four types of questions depending on what we ask for, and four types of questions depending on what knowledge we achieve, which can be traced back to the knowledge of ὅτι and διότι. The prerequisite for each of these questions is the lack of knowledge. Aristotle brings some new elements into the phenomenon of the meaning of questions in the course of knowledge: he shows the logical order of the question. He places asking questions in the domain of practical skills that serve the acquisition of knowledge, and he points out that the content of the answer and the kind of knowledge gained depend on the type of question asked.

Archaeological excavations continued to be focused on a huge mound of ashes and urban refuse, located to the south of the Imperial Bath complex in the central part of the Kom el-Dikka site. The mound accumulated over the ages from the 4th to the 7th century AD, covering the ruins of early Roman dwelling houses. The report gives an overview of digging in this area, where a substantial part of a house was cleared. It includes also a summary of conservation work performed on mosaics and monuments of ancient architecture.

The objective of this article is to define place and role of antique motives in modern art and design. Due to variety of creativness in XX/XXI century, created in different trends and beyond them, considerations were limited to sculptural art and design, based on creativness of French artist Léo Caillard and Israeli designer Ayala Serfaty. Interpretation of information, which was collected based on study of artists’ works of art, lead to conclusion that, despite different approach to antique tradition, both artists strive to similar targets and their intention is not imitation, but concept based on creation of surprising or even shocking links and juxtapositions. Research of contrasts between tradition and modernity is intended to provoke and encourage viewer to deeper and conscious interpretation of works of art and reflection about position of art in modern culture. It is essential to study esthetic contexts, circumstances of creation of works of art and motivation. The most important feature of this art is to induce strong impressions. Relations between viewer and work of art have crucial meaning. Approximation and logic of thinking, which are characteristic for each research orientations in history of classic and modern art, represents theoretical background of this article. In this context, there are references to Joachim Winckelmann, recognized as creator of methodological basics for researchment on ancient art. There are references to Franz Wickhoff, Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky who dealt with iconographical and iconographical-iconological methods.

The paper analyses the architecture of one of the finest palaces of the 18th Century in Poland, erected by Giovanni Fontana for Eustachy and Marianna Potocki in Radzyń Podlaski. One of their sons was Stanislaw Kostka, an eminent representative of the Enlightement, patron of art, architect-amateur, who played an important role in the history of the Classicism in Po¬land. The main object of the analysis is to establish sources of inspiration for the artistic taste of Stanislaw Kostka Potocki, educated in the middle of fine architecture of his family residence, thus enabling to make a hypothesis that the fascinations in the ancient art of the times of Classicism are rooted in the culture under the reign of the Saxon dynasty in Poland.

This paper is focused on the decoration of some late antique residences in Egypt, Cyrenaica, and Cyprus. All of them show common forms of self-presentation of urban elites across the eastern Mediterranean between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. The analysis is based on a global vision of social life in a world that was deeply influenced by a transition from old to new models and by forms of syncretism between various backgrounds which merged in new decorative systems. By recognising their owners’ cultural environment, associations between décor and power can be elucidated in a comparative study of the main elements of these luxury residences. In this context, Christianity is one of the principal issues to be taken into account, along with deep pagan roots of the aristocratic paideia during the investigated period. In fact, the specific choice of the iconographies in the mosaics or the subjects for the statues displayed in these houses can be understood only if contextualised against the spiritual life of the period. In the discussed residences, cultural identity is also manifested by forms of continuity in the architectural elevations. The fact that local traditions developed during the Hellenistic Period were still in use – both as reused building elements and as newly created decoration – can be interpreted as a manifestation of the antiquity and prestige of the families who owned the dwellings. These phenomena are studied through a review of the contexts and their comparative analysis in order to highlight similar developments and their meanings.

This article explores the relationships and correlations between early Greek elegy (7th—5th c. BC) and the elegiac mood of a poem understood today as a nostalgic and melancholic attitude of the subject evoked in a poem. The known surviving ancient texts prove the thematic heterogeneity of the elegiac genre at its early stage of development, while this elegiac emotionality is by no means a distinctive feature of this particular poetical category within the archaic parental context even though it does occur in some works composed in distichs that are traditionally labeled as elegiac (e.g. works of Archilochus and Mimnermus). Elegiac attitude, within modern understanding of the term, is also to be fundin the melic poetry of early Greek poets (such as Sappho, Anacreon and Simonides of Ceos) which were, in fact, considered by ancient theoreticians as non elegiac as far as their genre was concerned. The attribution of the elegiac character, not linked genetically with any of genres, to one poetical category is thus a result of multilayered processes of cultural interaction and the reception of the early Greek literature rather than the substance of the genre.

Onomastic studies typically state that lineage (the patronymic in particular) was expressed in Ancient Greek through the use of the genitive case. In this study, which is based on an extensive corpus of Roman and Late Antique petitions and contracts, I show that the actual situation was much more complex: up to eight different lineage expressions are attested. In line with recent variationist studies, I take it that variation in language is not random and try to connect the different types of lineage expressions to a number of parameters of variation, that is, diachronic, social, and text-internal factors.

Starting from a detailed interpretation of P. Oxy. Such leases left them with a marketable surplus of the produce in remuneration, which they could sell either to their own estate or to outside parties. Contrary to the now current view of Apionic enapographoi georgoi as directly managed permanent employees or wage labourers, the evidence reviewed suggests that they were not an economically distinct and homogenous labour group.
