Radiation-induced bystander effects occur in cells that are not directly irradiated but that communicate with irradiated cells via secreted into culture medium soluble factors or gap junction. This effect induces in irradiated and neighboring cells persistent long-term changes that result in delayed death or genomic instability leading to neoplastic transformation. Non-irradiated human normal lymphocytes were incubated in a medium transferred from irradiated another samples of lymphocytes (ICM - irradiation-conditioned medium). Immediately after replacement of the normal or conditioned medium antioxidant vitamins C or E were added. In lymphocytes incubated in a normal medium (control) or conditioned medium, with or without vitamins, the chromosomal damage and apoptosis were estimated. The results show that medium from irradiated cells (ICM) induces in normal lymphocytes micronuclei and condensation of chromatin characteristic of processes of apoptosis. Conditioned medium did not influence cell cycle division. Bystander effect-induced formation of micronuclei was inhibited by antioxidant vitamins C and E, but this had no effect on the induction of apoptosis. These observations suggest that antioxidant vitamins are able to modify radiation-induced bystander effect (by preventing the increase in micronuclei), without inhibiting elimination of damaged cells via apoptosis. This finding could have significant implication for estimating risks of radiation exposure.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of antioxidant vitamins in the diet of amateurs preparing for a marathon. The study group consisted of 92 women (30.8 ±6.7 years old) and 66 men (33.2 ±6.6 years old). Assessment of the content of antioxidant vitamins in the diet of the subjects was made on the basis of the 3-day dietary records. The average content of vitamin A in the diets of women surveyed was 1,296.8 mg/day and 1,499.7 mg/day in the diets of men. The vitamin A content of less than 90% of the norm was observed in the diets of 2.2% women and 9.1% men. The average content of vitamin C in the diet amounted to 130.6 (women) and 111.4 (men) mg/day. Significantly more men than women (30% vs 13%) did not fulfill the norm for vitamin C. The average vitamin E content was higher in the diets of men than in women (15.2 vs 13.0 mg/day; p < 0.0001). The vitamin E content was insufficient compared to norms in the diets of 10% of women and 12% of men. The average content of vitamins A, C and E in the diet of the subjects significantly exceeded the recommendations. The largest proportion of diets, not meeting the stated norms for vitamin C were in the group of men.

Euphorbia hirta (Tawa-tawa), also known as “gatas-gatas”, is a hairy herb grown in open grasslands, roadsides and pathways. This indigenous plant is considered as one of the most popular folkloric treatment for dengue in the Philippines. When researched, Tawa-tawa was found to be able to promote cell production, and to prevent platelet destruction (Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, 2013). In this study, a new application of the plant was evaluated. This was as a natural supplement for ice cream production without the degradation of its essential compounds. Fresh leaves of E. hirta were oven dried and macerated to water for 48 hours. The obtained extracts were subjected to lyophilization to prevent potential degradation of plant’s essectial compounds. Ice cream formulation was added with the obtained powdered extract of E. hirta. Results revealed that the lyophilized extracts from E. hirta leaves contained flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols and saponins. Promising amounts of Vitamin B2 (5.02 mg/kg), Beta-carotene (9.8 mg/kg), Vitamin E (23.8 mg/kg) and Vitamin C (80.2 mg/kg) were also obtained. Meanwhile, the E. hirta supplemented ice cream was negative to Salmonella and a 16 CFU/g for Total Coliform Count was found. What is more, organoleptic testing for both taste and texture revealed excellent responses and very good aroma. The findings of the current study affirmed the feasibility of developing a naturally-based ice cream product supplemented with a medicinal plant like E. hirta. The results indicate that the developed ice cream is safer and healthier, hence could encourage everyone to enjoy the delights of eating ice cream without worry of gastronomic distress.
