Background: Along with an increasing number of cancer patients, the need for cytostatic drugs is also increasing. Nursing staff are the largest professional group exposed to the potential dangers of these substances. Aim of the study: Assess the awareness of nursing staff who have direct contact with cytostatic drugs in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Material and methods: The research group consisted of 101 nurses routinely exposed to cytostatic drugs. A diagnostic survey and questionnaire technique were used along with the author’s original questionnaire. Results: Of the respondents, 58.42% (n=59) never used protective shoes while dealing with cytostatics, while 53.4% (n=54) never used long-sleeved, waterproof uniforms; 49.50% (n=50) did not apply half masks, and 34.65% (n=35) failed to protect their eyes with protective glasses. The most common cause of not using the protective equipment was identified as lack of time (72; 71.29%). Deficiency of training on protective measures while working with hazardous cytostatics was cited by 37.62% (n=38) as the reason for their behavior, while almost 22% of them claimed that their employer did not provide them with a sufficient amount of protective equipment for individual use. The older, more experienced and higher-educated the staff, the higher awareness among them about the need for using PPE. Conclusions: Higher-educated and more experienced nursing staff should constitute the source of ‘good practices’ and educate younger undergraduate colleagues theoretically and practically. Employers and management staff should provide employees with more training on the correct application of protective measures and increase the intensity of control of the use of personal protective equipment.

A pilot study on relationships of selected molecular factors [erbB-1, erbB-2, erbB-3, and c-myc oncogene average gene copy numbers (AGCN); steroid receptors and pS2 gene expression; tumor cells' DNA values] to the ex vivo chemosensitivity of ovarian cancer in a modified adenosine triphosphate cell viability chemosensitivity assay (ATP-CVA), was performed. Despite the relatively small number of patients, numerous correlations among the factors tested were found. Nevertheless, only c-myc gene dosage positively affected ex vivo chemosensitivity of tumors tested.

Opis:
Objectives Cyclophosphamide (CP) and ifosfamide (IF) are effective anti-cancer drugs but their genotoxicity can harm everyone contacting them occupationally or environmentally. Therefore, a sensitive method for monitoring their amounts in biological and environmental samples is needed. This has aimed to develop a method for analyzing these drugs in urine and water sewage samples. Material and Methods The drug spiked samples were extracted, derivatized, and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and the analytical parameters were validated. Results The method gave linear calibration curves at the concentrations of 0–190 nmol/l. It had the quantitation limit of 3.8 nmol/l and showed acceptable specificity, accuracy, recovery and precision. Conclusions The developed method can be used reliably for monitoring CP and IF concentrations in urine and water sewage. The method will be applied for preventing health risk from occupational and environmental exposures to these drugs. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2016;29(5):815–822

A pilot study on relationships of selected molecular factors (c-myc oncogene average gene copy numbers (AGCN); serum CEA and CA 15.3 antigen levels; tumor cells' DNA values), to the ex vivo chemosensitivity of primary female human breast cancer in a modified adenosine triphosphate cell viability chemosensitivity assay (ATP-CVA), was performed. Four drug combinations were tested. A group of 75 cases of female primary breast cancer was assessed. Numerous correlations were found among molecular factors tested but none, with the exception of tumor grading, of these reflected ex vivo chemosensitivity of tumors tested. The results suggest that the parameters tested may not be important factors related to adjuvant chemoresponsiveness of primary human breast cancer to tested drug combinations.
