Opis:
Statistical reports show that more and more people have a Facebook profile. This online social media service contributes to the establishment of new and maintaining already existing interpersonal relationships. It also enables the users to share information and exchange views. At the same time, Facebook can be used to ridicule and intimidate other people without any consequences, or even with some kind of recognition and respect in their peer group. Consequently, young people who use social media meet with different values and anti-values which shape their identity. The article discusses the Facebook activity of children and youth, with a particular emphasis on the analysis of young people's participation in popular Facebook groups, as well as values and anti-values tracked in their posts.

The paper investigates the relations between Schwartz’s values and beliefs which may reflect skepticism toward science – specifically vaccine rejection, climate change denial and creationism. Recent research on the causes of anti-science indicates that they may be motivational, pertaining to ideologies, worldviews, and one’s moral codes. Therefore, we postulated that value priority hierarchies hierarchies may be predictors of anti-science. Results (N = 509) indicated that Conservation metatype values were positively associated with anti-science, while Self-Transcendence and Openness to change metatypes were connected with support for science. We also found significant differences in value profiles between participants with lower vs. higher anti-scientific beliefs. We discuss the possible motivational underpinnings of these results.

The article deals with the church and religious life of Ukrainians in the context of national and political processes during the 1960s and 1970s. The author characterizes the anti-religious policy of the Soviet government, shows its directions, forms, and methods, studies the attitude of Ukraine’s title nation representatives to religious persecution and to manipulation of religious consciousness by the communist leadership, and highlights comprehensive atheistic activities and the elimination of the ways for reviving religiosity among people. The author reveals the essence, the process of creating and artificially enforcing the new Soviet ritualism in Ukrainians’ lives. This ritualism has become a convenient tool for popularizing communist ideology in the Ukrainian SSR, destroying historical memory and undermining the national identity of the Ukrainian people. The new Soviet ritualism was also a means for implementing the policy of denationalizing Ukrainians, beginning with the age-old religious oppression of Ukrainian customs, traditions, and rituals. The model of state-church policy of the Soviet power in the described period was based on the use of a variety of forms and methods of struggle against religion, including: a comprehensive control over clergy activities, destruction of religious sites and sacred objects, as well as administrative, moral, and political pressure on believers. Displacing religion, the Soviet totalitarian state destroyed not only native religious customs of the Ukrainian people, but also violated the principles of the centuries-old traditional culture and undermined the national fortitude of Ukrainians.

According to the founding treaties, the European Union is based on the recognition of certain values: freedom, democracy, pluralism, diversity, and equality between women and men. Although existing data indicate that Polish society is generally supportive of the EU, recent discussions about Polexit and axiological conflicts within Polish society suggest that these values do not enjoy universal and unconditional support. We employed a mixed methods approach to analyze the attitudes of Poles towards the EU. Using quantitative methods, we identified key aspects of a radical Catholic-nationalistic orientation. Based on a qualitative investigation, we established that those with a radical axiological orientation who reject European values do not proclaim anti-Europeanism openly. An analysis of data from far-right actors’ social media provides a more precise understanding of the meanings and emotions associated with Europe and the European Union within radical Catholic-nationalist narratives. The most prominent feature of these narratives is the emphasis on the alleged “moral decline” of older European societies, along with the postulation of alternative forms of European integration that move away from cultural integration.

Nowadays law is considered to be an effective instrument of shaping social reality. In this context special attention must be paid to gender equality law and jurisprudence which setting protection against unequal treatment because of someone’s gender intend to make a balance between individual’s identity and social expectations related to his or her role. These social preconceptions based on gender stereotypes must be contested insofar as they serve as an instrument to rationalize inequality between women and men. The aim of the article to explore the gender stereotypes in the anti-discriminatory judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union. The article claims that the CJEU’s case law is unambiguous with respect to this. On the one hand the Court contributes to eradication of stereotypes based on gender in some cases, on the other – it reinforces them in the other. The article starts with explanation of the role of the gender equality principle in the EU legal system. It also makes some general remarks on stereotypes, biases and discrimination. The second part is devoted to the CJEU case law in which the Court, explicitly or implicitly, avoids applying the gender stereotypes lens to equality issue. The third part of the article analyses those of the CJEU judgments which, unfortunately, can be considered as perpetuating gender stereotypes and as such discrimination based on them.

The article analyses the informative function of statements made by young people under the care of the Voluntary Labour Corps (OHP). These young people come from dysfunctional families and are often marginalised / at risk of marginalisation. These young people (senders) tend to employ short, mono-sentenced statements usually saturated with vulgarisms and have little knowledge of the world. Their utterances reveal the young person’s emotional state, his or her attitude towards the receiver and other members of the community, family environment and social reality. Analysis of senders’ statements sheds light on their level of personal culture, degree of self control, linguistic control, linguistic aggression, and provides insight into the young persons’ values. Assessment of utterances demonstrates a transition from the provision of general information concerning the community to information concerning the young persons’ personal life and positive or negative evaluations of his or her actions. Over time, the flow of information diminishes the distance between the sender and the receiver. The communicative effectiveness of the young persons’ statements increases as does the effectiveness of socializing activities.

The statement (which is accepted in humanistic pedagogy of work) that human work is a value and a sphere in which values become a reality, still calls for interpretation. The author makes such an attempt by outlining the characteristics of human work. The way of presenting human work in axiological and ethical perspective indicates that it is a phenomenon owing to which changes in both man and his environment are taking place. This, in turn, should be used by pedagogy in order to support man in his life-long development.

Utopia as a literary genre gains popularity in transitory moments, periods of social, economic and mental transformations. Literary visions of the future can be treated as forecasts of the development of societies, or projections of dreams about a better tomorrow, but in the case of anti-utopias, these predictions are not optimistic and have their source in the reality contemporary to the author. The abundance of dystopias in the early 21st century testifies to writers’ concerns about the development of the country and society. The main theme of the latest anti-utopias is undoubtedly the problem of limiting or even depriving an individual of freedom, but the writers also showed particular concern for the future of Russia as a state, its territorial integrity, culture and special spirituality. Both the future autonomy of the country and its indivisibility were quite often questioned, and fears or even phobias were associated with the vision of the threat of Chinese colonisation.

Opis:
The paper tries to defend the thesis that it is impossible to decide upon moral issues without any references to the ontology of the world we live in. An illustrative example of the main argumentation line is the choice made by Cypher—a second plan character in the movie Matrix. Cypher decides to betray human rebels fighting against machines for freedom and, as a reward, accepts affluent life in the virtual reality. His choice seems to be superficially reprehensible because of the abandonment of the real world and authentic life. However, one can argue that the dichotomy between the real and virtual world is seeming. By choosing the virtual reality Cypher decided to act in a world which, like the real world, makes it possible to be a moral subject and enables authentic experience. The difference between both the worlds lies in the type of determination limiting any conscious subject. Cypher prefers to live in a world determined by the algorithm of Matrix more than in a world where his behaviour is determined by genes and other biological factors.

The performative character of aesthetics Many lecturers of aesthetics feel that the subject of their lectures is not necessarily aesthetics, but history of aesthetics, the aesthetic views of Plato and Aristotle, Kant and Hegel, Hume and Burke, the British philoso- phers of taste and German romanticists. Does that mean that aesthetics feeds on its own past, is nurtured by reinterpretations of its classics, defends concepts and categories that inspire no one and do not open new cognitive perspectives? Does it mean that aesthetics is dead today, like Latin or Sanskrit, while its vision of art and beauty is outdated, invalid and totally useless? Aesthetics is a polysemous concept, which has never been sufficient- ly defined. It can determine a way of perceiving and experiencing the world that is specific for a given community, in other words, taste, yet it can also mean certain countries’ or regions’ contribution to aesthetic thought, to the aesthetic self-knowledge of man. Thus its dimension is practical, cultural and philosophical. Today aesthetics faces new challenges that it has to live up to; its ma- jor tasks include the defence of popular art, polishing the concept of aes- thetic experience, aestheticization of everyday life and de-aestheticiza- tion of art, transcultural aesthetics and its approach to national cultures. In the book “Aesthetics: the Big Questions” (1998) Carolyn Korsmeyer reduces the main issues of contemporary aesthetics to six questions. The first question, old but valid, is a question about the definition of art. What is art? Nowadays everything can be art because art has shed all limita- tions, even the limitations of its own definition, and has gained absolute freedom. It has become absolute, as Boris Groys says. It has become absolute, because it has made anti-art a full-fledged part of art, and it has not been possible either to question or negate art since, as even the negation of 50 Grzegorz Dziamski art is art, legitimized by a more than 100 year long tradition, going back to the first ready-made by Marcel Duchamp in 1913. Today making art can be art and not making art can be art, as well, art is art and anti-art is art. The old question: “What is art?” loses its sense, and so does Nel- son Goodman’s question: “When art?”. When does something become art? These questions are substituted by new ones: “What is art for you?”, “What do you expect from art?”. There can be a lot of answers, because defining art has a performative character. Louise Bourgeois has ex- pressed the performative character of defining art in an even better way: “Art is whatever we believe to be art”. And for some reasons, which we do not fully realize ourselves, we want to make others share our belief. The text in an introduction to a new book on contemporary aesthetics by Grzegorz Dziamski.

Opis:
The study is devoted to an attempt to determine whether the analyses carried out at the level of the philosophy, theory and analysis and synthesis of criminal law, as well as the approaches presented in various criminological theories can be used in debates about the goals and functions of modern criminal law. The analyses carried out are based on the reconstruction of the current state of criminal law, dominated in many countries by penal populism. The coincidence of the repressiveness characteristic of the populist approach subordinated to the implementation of the concept of extreme deterrence, with the position of the legal elite as to the goals and functions of criminal law, illustrates the state of tensions and crises in which contemporary repressive law has found itself. The image of the public debate, characterized by the unambiguity of positions combined with the lack of perceptual openness to the views presented by the proponents of opposing approaches, provides a premise for the search for rational and verifiable arguments in disputes over the shape of criminal law. Given the limitations of the analysis and synthesis of criminal law in the sphere of disputes about values, an anthropological vision and a model of social structure make it reasonable to search for premises that order the debate about criminal law on other levels. In this regard, the study presents systemic approaches presented in the philosophy of criminal law combined with an attempt to justify that, in fact, complementary elements can be seen in them. Complementing the philosophical perspective is the plane of criminal law theory, on which one can also find elements that are part of the universal approach to repressive law. Adding to this picture of modern criminological theories, the study presents the thesis that modern criminal law serves multiple, sometimes opposing functions justified by reference to other assumptions and models of social structure. The multiple functions of modern criminal law make it unreasonable to refer to the dichotomy capturing alternatively the functions and goals of criminal law either as an instrument for protection of socially valuable values or as a tool of management by repression. The text seeks to justify the position that modern criminal law performs, in part, both functions indicated above. At the same time, there are opportunities to rationally limit the use of criminal law instrumentally as a tool of management by repression in the interest of power and certain social groups. The science of criminal law, encompassing the following planes: theoretical and philosophical, can be a plane that provides premises and arguments to help resolve contemporary dilemmas. In particular, it seems that the approaches presented in the science of criminal law and criminology are not so much of an opposing and radically competitive nature, but are in fact harmonizing, containing a number of complementary elements in a complex set of assumptions and claims that make up a holistic approach to the criminal law system.

Opis:
According to certain appraisals, the Russian-Ukrainian war of 2014, euphemistically called ‘the Ukrainian crisis’, has largely confirmed the country’s dramatic split and the division of loyalties between the ‘East’ and ‘West, or between the ‘Eurasian’ and ‘Eu-ropean’ paths of development, embodied by Russia and the European Union. In other appraisals, however, the Ukrainian nation is seen as significantly more united than was believed by many experts and politicians, and public support for Russia’s aggression, outside of the occupied Crimea and Donbass, is considered to be nearly non existent. The author of the text does not deny that Ukraine remains divided in various regards, but he argues that the main—and actually the only important—line of division exists not between ethnic Russians and Ukrainians (Russophobes and Ukrainophones), or between the East and West, but is rather ideological in nature and divides two types ofUkrainian identity: non-/anti-Soviet and post-/neo-Soviet (or ‘European’ and ‘EasternSlavic’). All the remaining factors, such as ethnicity, language, region, income, educa-tion, or age, correlate in varying degrees to this main element. Yet regardless of howthey may divide the country’s population, an exterior threat to the nation makes themlargely irrelevant. At the same time, such a threat raises the important question of the values embodied in these two types of Ukrainian identity.
