    In der literarischen Figur der ‚schönen Jüdin‘ überkreuzen sich diverse Ausgrenzungskategorien. Neben dem Diskriminierungspotential des Judentums und der Weiblichkeit, das sich den in der Intersektionalitätsforschung zentralen Kategorien von race und gender zuordnen lässt, wird die Figur auch aufgrund ihres sozialen Status (class) ausgegrenzt. Letzteres wird im vorliegenden Aufsatz anhand der Analyse der ‚schönen Jüdin‘ in Die Majoratsherren (1819) und Wälsungenblut (1905/1921) gezeigt. Dabei werden auch die sich historisch wandelnden Kontexte deutlich, die sich in der literarischen Konzeption der ‚schönen Jüdin‘ widerspiegeln.
    In the figure of the ‚belle juive‘, various modes of discrimination intersect. In addition to suffering discrimination because of her ( Jewish) race and (female) gender, categories that are central to the concept of Intersectionality, the figure is also subjected to exclusion on account of her social status (class). The latter will be shown in this paper by means of an analysis of the ‚belle juive‘ in Die Majoratsherren (1819) and Wälsungenblut (1905/1921). Comparing the two novellas also allows one to reveal developments in the historical context that are reflected in the literary conception of the ‚belle juive‘.

    Esej ten jest próbą krytyki tak zwanej “krytyki antysystemowej”, wystosowaną z pozycji afirmacji nowoczesności jako epoki, która postawiła na prymat życia nad myśleniem. Odwołując się do koncepcji Marshalla Bermana, zwanej tu „witalistycznym marksizmem”, esej podkreśla unikatową i odrębną rolę pojęcia życia w modernitas, które przeciwstawia się wszelkim apriorycznym i odgórnym projektom intelektualnym. Zdumiewająca zgodność myśli prawicowej i lewicowej w odniesieniu do nowoczesności wynika jego zdaniem stąd, że wszyscy ci myśliciele są właśnie nade wszystko myślicielami, wciąż jeszcze wyznającymi stary, przednowoczesny, Platoński prymat myślenia nad życiem. W swej części konstruktywnej natomiast esej ten przedstawia nowoczesną ideę „życia obiecanego”, które mogłoby stać się natchnieniem nowego typu myślicieli, lojalnych wobec projektu nowoczesności.
    This essay constitutes an attempt to criticize the so-called anti-systemic critique from the positions which strongly affirm modernity as an epoch based on the primacy of life over thinking. By referring to the ideas of Marshall Bermann which he called “Marxist Vitalism”, this essay emphasizes a unique and innovative role of the concept of life in modernity as opposed to any apriorical and preestablished intellectual project. The seemingly astonishing harmony between the Left and Right variants of “anti-modernism” consists precisely in the fact that all those thinkers who criticize modernity are most of all thinkers who naturally assume the old, premodern, essentially Platonic primacy of thinking over life. In its constructive part, the essay presents the modern idea of a “promised life” which it links to political messianism; it expresses an optimistic belief that it can become a new inspiration for the thinkers to come who will accept the specificity of modernitas and learn how to be loyal to its premises.

    This paper is a short attempt at examining Tagore’s concept of modernity, by trying to understand what modernism and its relation to modernity means in this poet’s work. Considering the large range of his writings, essays and novels are selected according to what I consider to be the most relevant to the present investigation, favoring the more systematic writings among Tagore’’s novels and essays. Gora, however, another complex criticism of Nationalism, has not been included here, since its analysis would deserve a complete paper. It also does not focus on the introduction of European modernisms and European modernist expressions in India from a historical or aesthetic perspective. Rather, it underline a conceptual understanding through Tagore’s work of his own ideas, and the experience of modernism in India through his Indian writings. In so doing, I try to present the important differences of these concepts in an Indian colonial context, as well as the singularity of Tagore himself in his own context, hoping to contribute to an exploration of the poet’s talent and richness of expression and thinking.

    The aim of the text is to delineate the relationship Karol Irzykowski and the circle of Skamander literary group established at the very beginning of the foundation of their monthly publication and which lasted until Irzykowski’s death. The article includes an outline of the history of their collaboration and the disagreements that divided them, as well as an attempt to interpret issues such as ‘programophobia,’ ‘talentism,’ civil courage, anti-Semitism, and ‘clerkism,’ focusing on their key points in particular.

The subject of this analysis is the Polish translation of the work Kappa, also known in Poland under the title In the land of Aquarius, made by Mikołaj Melanowicz. The story shows a phantasmagoric visit to the strange country (peopled by anthropomorphic creatures) and some sober observations of this disturbingly atypical land made by the main character. Due to the multitude of culturally recognizable themes referring to the history of Gulliver, the work bears remarkable signs of anti-utopia. My analysis takes on the themes of the story that are important from the point of view of this branch of philosophy and on its symbolic dimension with its immersion in the tradition of Japanese aesthetics. Basing my interpretation on the critical revision of the basic assumptions of the Japanese aesthetics school and on the close reading of the two surfaces of the work (literal and symbolic), I consider how the text functions in a philosophical way. The article focuses both on the literally aesthetic level of expression (descriptions of the presented world) as well as on the aesthetics of narration and the way of constructing the text. Przedmiotem analizy czynię polski przekład utworu W krainie wodników, znanego w Polsce również pod tytułem Kappy, dokonany przez Mikołaja Melanowicza. Historia opowiada o fantasmagorycznej wizycie w kraju antropomorficznych istot oraz o trzeźwych obserwacjach niepokojąco nietypowej krainy czynionych przez głównego bohatera. Ze względu na mnogość rozpoznawalnych kulturowo wątków nawiązujących do historii o Guliwerze, utwór nosi znamiona antyutopii. Moja analiza podejmuje wątki opowiadania istotne z punktu widzenia tej gałęzi filozofii oraz jego symboliczny wymiar z jego zanurzeniem w tradycji japońskiej estetyki. Opierając swoją interpretację na krytycznej rewizji podstawowych założeń szkoły japońskiej estetyki i bliskim odczytaniu dwu płaszczyzn utworu (literalnej i symbolicznej), przyglądam się sposobowi filozoficznego funkcjonowania tekstu.     Tekst jest próbą przyjrzenia się specyfice i rozwojowi włoskiego antysemityzmu czasów reżimu faszystowskiego, ze szczególnym naciskiem na sferę kultury i krytykę artystyczną. Ówcześni publicyści, z Mussolinim na czele, w pierwszej dekadzie panowania nowego ustroju wyraźnie negowali istnienie w Italii tzw. kwestii żydowskiej. Około połowy lat 30. XX w. sytuacja uległa jednak znaczącym przeobrażeniom, odpowiadającym kierunkom, w jakim ewoluowała również doktryna rasistowska, a także paradygmat faszystowskiej estetyki. Przyglądając się tym zmianom, Autorka próbuje przybliżyć specyfikę antyżydowskiej, a zarazem antymodernistycznej nagonki (główne osie sporów, ale też retorykę wypowiedzi), obecnej przede wszystkim w pismach redagowanych przez charyzmatyczną postać Telesia Interlandiego. Artykuł w dużym stopniu opiera się na tekstach źródłowych tego czasu i porusza zagadnienia dotąd nieopisane (lub opisane tylko fragmentarycznie) w literaturze przedmiotu.
    The article constitutes an attempt to examine the characteristic features and the development of Italian anti-Semitism in the period of the fascist regime with special attention to the sphere of culture and to art criticism. In the first decade of the regime, the essayists of the day, with Mussolini at the fore, clearly denied that the “Jewish Question” existed in Italy. This changed significantly around the middle of the 1930s, and these changes were parallel to the directions in which the racist doctrine and the paradigm of fascist aesthetics were evolving at the time. Examining those changes, the author attempts to shed light on the characteristic features (the main lines of the debate, but also the applied rhetoric) of the anti-Jewish, and at the same time anti-Modernist witch-hunt launched especially in press publications edited by the charismatic Telesio Interlandi. The article is largely based on source texts of the era and refers to areas hitherto unexplored or only fragmentarily explored in specialist literature.
