Opis:
The dystopian novel Kaharlyk (2014) by Oleh Shynkarenko, the action of which takes place in about 2144, depicts various kinds of wars and forms of armed struggle: the occupation of territories of Ukraine by the Russian army, Russian-Chinese nuclear war, guerrilla warfare, the local conflict for power, and ethnic antagonisms. The description of the post-apocalyptic reality Grey Zone gives the author an opportunity to reflect on the dangers of aggressive ideology: imperialism, religious fundamentalism and radical nationalism. The diagnosis of Ukrainian society presented is also alarming. Hence, the work can be seen as a warning novel. Similar elements can be found in many dystopias written recently in different countries. An analysis of examples from Russian and American cultures shows that criticism of the existing situation is often combined with an admonition of the phenomena that may arise from the dangerous trends of the present, including armed conflicts. Hence visions of future wars, among other things, serve as a tool of discreditation against the ruling political forces and propose an analysis of discourses responsible for driving those wars. Implemented in such way, the ideological function, the metadiscursive perspective and humanistic values of dystopia allow for it, in our opinion, to be included in the arsenal of measures designed to “create conditions that scare of war or limit its scope” (A. Toffler, H. Toffler). The totality of these measures was defined by Alvin and Heidi Toffler as “anti-war”.

Opis:
Zestawienie ze sobą trzech wyrazistych, choć różnych znaczeniowo, przypadków (Miron Białoszewski, Janusz Anderman, Ryszard Schubert) stosowania techniki „przepisywania” literatury z życia i zapisywania „żywej mowy” ukazuje wachlarz możliwości i znaczeń, jakie niesie ta technika, jednocześnie wydobywa jej egzystencjalne i kulturowe sensy.
The text is an attempt to answer the question why in the seventies of the twentieth century in Polish literature, many authors referred to the everyday language, sometimes even suggesting that their artistic works are integrally or partially record of complete spoken utterances or entire stories of so-called “ordinary people”. What questions did that reality put, since the answer was everyday spoken language, and the daily utterances have escalated to the level of literature? The combination of the three distinct, but different in meaning (Miron Białoszewski, Janusz Anderman, Ryszard Schubert) the uses of the technique of “rewriting”of literature and saving “living speech” shows the range of possibilities and meanings posed by this technique and at the same time it brings out its existential and cultural meanings.

The aim of this article is to introduce a characteristic of the dissident movement and the anti-totalitarian literature in Bulgaria in the period 1944–1989. In the early‚ 90s a group of very important researchers began to focus on an accurate description of a Bulgarian dissident movement and migration literature. The results of researches in the field of history and literary studies do not give a coherent and explicit definition of dissent, dissident movement or migration dissident literature. In addiction recent works in literary studies, are not based on the various paradigms of dissent, but they create new terms and categories to describe the phenomena of cultural and literary period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1944 to 1989. The most popular are: alternative canon, anti-totalitarian literature, alternative literature, illegal literature – and in relation to dichotomies: literature of the PRB, socialist realism, socialist canon, official literature.

Hildegard of Bingen and her spiritual writings are an interesting example of women thought of the Middle Ages. She was not only the abbess of a convent, revealing her visions, but also as politically active woman took an important part in a social life of the twelfth century. Hildegard spoke about controversial problems. It remains true that preaching she expressed her opinions, described her revelations and proclaimed the will of God. It is no doubt that growing fame of Hildegard’s herself and her convent was caused by her writings. Commonly Hildegard of Bingen was remembered as a Benedictine nun and as a person who revealed the spiritual knowledge. Her visions were well known. The writings and authority of Hildegard as a prophet intensified so much that in thirteen century it was used against the Dominican and the Franciscan Order. In this century some false visions were written and attributed to Hildegard herself. Later one of them was also published against Jesuits. The copy of this print is in the Library of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow.

The author asks which way contemporary Russians’ consciousness is depicted in new Russian literature. He shows a few important novels published in the last decades and the role of neorealistic literature (Roman Senchin, Andrey Dmitriyev, Petr Aleshkovsky) and books written by women writers (Ludmila Petrushevskaya, Elena Chizhova, Guzel Yakhina) in deconstructing of neo-imperial and The Big Russia myth.

Opis:
The literary pattern of Asael’s punishment in the Enochic myth (1 En. 10,4-8) does not seem to originate in biblical literature or Greek mythology. It is far more probable that Babylonian anti-witchcraft literature provides the proper background for most of the elements in that literary pattern. The Jewish composer who lived in Mesopotamia in Late Babylonian period treated Asael and other Watchers as warlocks against whom some elements of exorcistic rituals have to be applied. The elimination of Asael and other Watchers from the earthly realm paved the way for the Jewish context of knowledge transmission, exemplified by Enoch and his insight into the structure of the world, revealed to him by angels faithful to the God of Israel.

Opis:
Zoranić built the problem of geopolitical and real time and space in his highly complex literary work through the use of genre. The work is constructed based on of Sannazzaro’s Arcadia, inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphosesand Dante’s Inferno, with an epistemological framework dedicated to Matijević and written according to the style and philosophy of Petrarch and the national folklore of love poems. In addition, the importance of literaturein an existentially threatened community is strictly related to the dichotomy of the epistemology of the appraisal of poetry as present from the pre-Platonic epoch to Zoranić’s humanistic debates. Zoranić speaks in favour of the poet as a medium of God (poeta theologus). Just like his models (especially Petrarch and Dante as supporters of studia humanitatis) he relies on church authorities (Saint Jerome, Augustine, Cassiodorus and Saint Isidore of Seville). Therefore, the author manages to capture in this poetical and cultural context the personal issues presented in literature (in Petrarch’s pastoral themes) as well as community-related issues (paradise and an existentially threatened community). As a result of a journey through shepherds’ retreats, the area of deželji that is at the same time Arcadia, theAvenue des Champs-Élysées and Paradise Lost, transforms into a wasteland. The destroyed cities and strongholds along the Krka canyon (the locus horridus as a symbol of the seized bašćina [ fatherland]), down the river Krkafrom its source to the mouth (catharsis/ re-birth) are symbols of the young poet’s turning from personal literature (lyrical poetry) to serious anti-Ottoman literature, aimed at saving literature’s identity as well as the bašćinian. The description of the deserted land – a symbol of a historical martyr place – is a message about the community’s role as sacrificial lamb. The return to Nin (the pseudo-mythological oldest town in the bašćina) brings the search to an end, but as a return to the starting point of the individual and the community. Zoranić introduces an allegory to the end of Mountains (Planine): the farewell at the beautiful Jela’s grave in his native Nin is a literary farewell to Petrarch’s Donna, notwithstanding whether it is a girl or the poet’s mother. The author’s decision to deal with national issues is reflected in the shift from Jela’s grave to the celebration of the famous bašćinianina [grave] of Juraj Divnić.

In today’s Central Europe ethnolinguistic nationalism is the region’s standard normative ideology of statehood creation, legitimation and maintenance. This ideology proposes that in spatial terms, the area of the use of national language X should overlap with the territory of nation-state X, in which all members of nation X should reside. In terms of cultural policy, this means that only works written by “indubitable” members of nation X in language X can be seen as belonging to culture X. This self-limiting pattern of ethnolinguistic “purity” (homogeneity) excluded from 20th century Polish literature much of traditional Polish-Lithuanian culture and numerous authors writing in other post-Polish-Lithuanian languages than Polish. Democratization that followed the fall of communism in 1989 partly transcended this ethnolinguistic exclusion, but the old national policy has been back since 2015.

Alameddine highlights the violence inscribed in the practices of book selection and canon formation. In doing so, he troubles received notions of the canon, the classics, and especially of world literature, offering an alternative conceptualization of this long-debated category as an intimate, cosmopolitan assemblage of worldly texts.

The author focuses on two kinds of fight: spiritual and virtual, and on the characters who engage in the fight. Two kinds of pious knights are distinguished: the allegorical character, created in "Pojedynek…" and "Enchiridion…", based on the Erasmian topos militis Christiani, and the knight of God – disclosed in "Judyta", who has nothing in common with that topos. It is pointed out that anti-Turkish elements occur in "Enchiridion…". There are also analogies between the protagonists in these works and the knight of Christ from Piotr Skarga’s "Żołnierskie nabożeństwo" ["Soldiers' Devotions"]. It is stated that Potocki is Erasmian only to the extent that he refers to Arian ideology, and pious knights show existential dilemmas – especially their care for the country regarding various threats, including the Turks.

In the article, I discuss novels by ideologists and activists of the inter-war nationalist movement. Popular literature played a significant role in propagation of nationalist ideas. When looking at female characters in novels by Roman Dmowski, Stanisław Piasecki, Władysław Jan Grabski, Adam Doboszyński and Jędrzej Giertych, I indicate the role of stereotype as well as the presence of patriarchal and anti-Semitic discourse in these novels. In works of the young generation of nationalists, one may find more diversified portraits of women, which is connected with progressing emancipation of women in the inter-war period, as well as beginnings of their activity in the nationalist movement. I show the hazards connected with focusing on the feminist discourse without the context of the ideology propagated by these works. Therefore, I pay attention to relationships between the ideological assumptions of the National Radical Camp (ONR) and creation of the presented world in the works under discussion.

During the 19th century, Giuseppe Mazzini communicated to his contemporaries the feeling of a strong hostility against France, to defend his project of emancipation of Italy (and Europe) from French tutelage. So he decided to choose other models and other examples, in European literature, that could serve as a guide and reference point. In particular, he was influenced by Polish poets, who convinced him that poetry could animate the “Europe of the people” and guide them to achieve the major objectives of the “new epoch”. Polish literature is the origin of Mazzini’s exaltation of Risorgimento poetry and constituted a positive reference point to counter the decline and loss of influence of French culture.
