    Philosophy of religion and modern theatrical thought — a missing element: The paper is a contribution to debate concerning religion within the context of contemporary culture. It focuses on qualification of Christian religion in the modern discourse on theater. These considerations were inspired by an international scientific and artistic meeting devoted to the work of Jerzy Grotowski and Karol Wojtyła. The proposed approach, however, circumscribes the perspectives of the conference and of cultural thought, by significantly broadening the context, especially regarding the philosophical, axiological and performative dimensions, and explores some fundamental questions. The paper advances hypotheses and proposal to deepen the religious discourse in the context of the philosophical anthropology of theater.

    The article intends to realize two goals. The first is an attempt to elucidate an interdisciplinary perspective in the approach to the anthropological category of agency (esp. by A. Gell, K. Wojtyła, M. Chekhov). The second goal is to apply the results of the examination of interdisciplinarity to the proposed definition of the anthropological meaning of the notion of agency (in the strict sense). My definition captures implications the category has for determining the order of reality in terms of ontological and epistemological dimensions
    Artykuł zmierza do realizacji dwóch celów. Pierwszym jest próba naświetlenia interdyscyplinarnej perspektywy na antropologiczne podejście do kategorii sprawstwa (zwł. A. Gella, K. Wojtyły, M. Czechowa). Drugim celem jest zastosowanie wyników studium interdyscyplinarności do proponowanej definicji antropologicznego znaczenia pojęcia sprawstwa (w sensie ścisłym). Moja definicja ujmuje implikacje, jakie kategoria sprawstwa ma dla determinacji porządku rzeczywistości w kategoriach wymiaru ontologicznego i epistemologicznego.

    Kalidas’s Sakuntala, which was presented by Jerzy Grotowki in the Theatre of 13 Rows nearly fifty years ago, has entered history not only as one of successiveWestern stage versions of this famous Indian drama, but primarily as a benchmark of Grotowski’s troupe’s theatrical exploration and examination of a new paradigm of acting technique. Both the manner of developing Kalidas’s original text (the prologue containing the Shiva mantra, the reduction of the action to the love story, the bipartite structure of the action - reflecting sensual and metaphysical experience - the tripartite structure of each of these parts, the addition to the play’s script of fragments from the Manusmriti and Kamasutra and songs and a recitation addressed to Shiva), as well as the manner of staging (the spatial organisation around a Shiva lingam, the environmental space) and the acting technique indicate Grotowski’s conscious reference to Indian tradition related to Shiva, and to the tantric conception of the dance of Shiva and Parwati. It would seem that in Grotowski’s vision the intention of expressing and experiencing a transformation, through theatre, of subjectivity (the character, the actor and the spectator) from temporal to transcendental, psychological to ecstatic, is dominant. It would also seem that the dynamic of such a transformation was central to the concept of ‘secular ritual’ and to Grotowski’s later theatre productions, which from the viewpoint of history designated a new theatrical convention.

    The article discusses the book Polifonie: Rzecz o pracy twórczej Teatru Węgajty (Polyphonies: The Creative Work of the Węgajty Theatre), edited by Katarzyna Kułakowska and published by the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2023. The reviewer analyses the implications of the volume’s research methodologies, structure, and the arrangement of contributions within its sections. She also discusses the main thematic areas and specific problems that come to the fore in the course of reading and are especially interesting in the context of contemporary postulates regarding the writing of the history of theatre and institutional critique.

    Der Beitrag untersucht die Verbindung von wirkungsasthetischen und theaterkritischen Diskursen. Begriffe wie Illusion oder Leidenschaft beschreiben in der zweiten Halfte des 18. Jahrhunderts sowohl Wirkungsziele einer anthropologischen Asthetik als auch Effekte, die als psychisch und sozial gefahrdend qualifiziert werden. Im Fokus steht die Thematisierung affektiver Wirkungen des Theaters bzw. der Kunst allgemein in ihrem heilsamen Potential durch Johann Georg Sulzer sowie die Theaterkritik Jean-Jacques Rousseaus, gegen die sich Sulzer dezidiert wendet. Ausgehend vom Konzept der ‚dunklen Vorstellungen‘ postuliert Sulzer, dass nur starke Empfindungen, nicht aber die Vernunft den Menschen sittlich und seelisch beeinflussen konnen. Vielmehr liefern extreme oder pathologische seelische Zustande ein Modell fur Kunstproduktion und -wirkung.
    The article examines the connection between discourses of sensation aesthetics and theatre criticism. In the second half of the 18th century, such concepts as illusion or passion address both the effects of anthropological aesthetics and effects qualified as psychologically and socially endangering. The focus is on Johann Georg Sulzer’s thematization of the affective effects of theatre and art in general in their healing potential, as well as on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s theatre criticism, which Sulzer resolutely opposes. Based on the concept of ‘dark ideas’, Sulzer postulates that only strong sensations, not reason, can influence people morally and psychologically. Extreme or pathological mental states provide Sulzer with a model for art production and effect.

    The article presents an analysis of selected elements of the Chorea Theatre Association play entitled Grotowski - An Attempt to Retreat. The discussion starts with the mutual relations between a series of ideas in contemporary theatrological discourse: the performance, the actor-performer and the actor-character. In the course of the argument, the categories ‘theatre of an attempt’ and ‘processual montage principle’ are introduced and used in the context of the issues involved in theatrical events and experiences. The first term refers to the contemporary theatrical practice of treating a theatre event as a sort of anthropological experiment, and the second refers to the compositional technique characteristic of this approach. The ‘theatre of an attempt’ formula, as a situation of confrontation in the tripartite structure of actor, viewer and stage-action reality, allows the anthropological dynamic of the theatre event, whose integral component is the mental activity of the spectator, to be captured. The ‘processual montage principle’ relates not only to the construction of the spectacle and the actor’s actions, but also to the attitudes and actions of the cognitive spectator, who, in participating in the theatrical process of becoming must himself attempt an imaginative reflection of this process. In conclusion, an interpretation of the play in the context of the ‘Everyman’ morality tradition is suggested.

    The subject of the article is the dramaturgy of the turn of the 19th century in the aspect of the changes that occur in understanding what is religious, and more exactly – what is Christian, in it. The article has a general character as we still do not have a sufficient amount of detailed analyses of the works of the writers undertaking religious subjects. It is pointed that in the studied period a basic polarization took place between the `cultural' reference to the Christian roots of the European civilization, and an attempt to penetrate in a `live' way into the truths of the faith contained in Christ's paschal message. The discussed breakthrough determines the crisis of culture and religion that has been noticed by numerous researchers. The changes are studied in the dramaturgy of the Young Poland period (Młoda Polska) with the use of a wide perspective of understanding the anthropological crisis. The fact is pointed to that moral relativism and the contestation of the Christian vision of man and God in the modernistic works had their source in religious modernism that tried to reconcile the Christian Revelation with the conclusions reached by agnosticism and history approached in the positivist way. The Young Poland dramas are characterized by various forms of tragedy in the presented world and characters. They created forms of stage literature that have the features of existential tragedy connected with fatalism of history (Szandlerowski) and destruction of moral values (Kasprowicz), as well as with a loss of personal and historical identity (Wyspiański).

    The paper is based on the assumption that the contemporary educational system, including  its general approach to literature, is characterized by being totally old-fashioned, and its results are completely opposite to what the authors of the relevant programmes hoped  to achieve, and this is the reason why it desperately  needs re-evaluating and revising. The text documents various motivations of interpreting William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, The Tempest, as an example of a valuable and meaningful work of fiction.  Thus ‘t is a good starting point for a constructive reflection on how to create conditions suitable for studying literature-based texts in the classroom as well as on teachers’ training which would respect both the up-to-date cultural context and the value of humanistic education, paramount for the development of human identity, and which is nowadays  widely contested by the present interim economic and technical priorities.
