    Opis:
    Heart of Darkness is often seen as a parable on the subject of human nature or as a critique of modern Western civilization and its colonial crimes. The novella was obviously planned not as a story ‘about’ Africa, but above all as a story that makes the reader – like Marlow – confront the experience of an unknown cultural context. As such, it is an exemplary tale about the meeting of cultures and the experience of cultural otherness, which cannot be reduced to a mere epistemological pattern. This article is an attempt to apply the concept of the ritual of passing and Victor Turner’s theory of liminality to a reading of Conrad’s novella.

    In his essay The Task of the Translator, Walter Benjamin compared literary translation to fragments of a broken vessel that need to be put together. Applying Benjamin’s metaphor to the world of dance, this article proposes to look at the practice of the Japanese classical dance as a translation process that occurs at the level of the body. Kirsten Hastrup’s anthropology of experience is proposed as the methodological perspective. Basing on her own body and many years of personal experience with nihon buyō as the field of her ethnographic research, the author reflects on her dual role of a dancer and a researcher, and her double – half-Japanese and half-Polish – identity. Reconstructing her experience of learning the dance, primarily the mistakes she made at the early stage, she looks into the process of transforming the body. With the dance recognised as a kind of a language, she proposes to approach it and its practice like a form of reading. Through a detailed analysis of different positions of the body and putting the body in motion, she searches for the possible ways to understand the dance and its translation. While doing so, she highlights this long-term process as a prerequisite for such a translation to occur.

A masterpiece of Japanese and world cinema, Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon (1950) refers to a new model of narration in film, and broadens horizons in mid-20th-century film but also film in current imes. Rashomon set out new paths and fields of exploration in film art and began a new era in modern narration in moving pictures. This study re-evaluates Kurosawa’s work as an innovative, trans-national and trans-cultural approach to world cinema.

    The article discusses the book Polifonie: Rzecz o pracy twórczej Teatru Węgajty (Polyphonies: The Creative Work of the Węgajty Theatre), edited by Katarzyna Kułakowska and published by the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2023. The reviewer analyses the implications of the volume’s research methodologies, structure, and the arrangement of contributions within its sections. She also discusses the main thematic areas and specific problems that come to the fore in the course of reading and are especially interesting in the context of contemporary postulates regarding the writing of the history of theatre and institutional critique.

    Artykuł jest mimetyczną interpretacją Ślubu Witolda Gombrowicza. Zastosowanie teorii René Girarda w funkcji metajęzyka pozwala na zauważenie częściowej dekonstrukcji, jakiej polski pisarz dokonuje względem koncepcji mordu pierwotnego (i buntu syna przeciwko ojcu) stworzonej przez Zygmunta Freuda. „Poprawka” Gombrowicza (zapożyczona od Szekspira) polega na prezentacji przekonania, zgodnie z którym rywalizacja (oraz jej efekt – morderstwo) jest specyficznym, naśladowczym modusem międzyludzkich relacji, a jej aspekt przedmiotowy (m.in. erotyczny) pozostaje kwestią drugorzędną.
    The article offers a discussion and comparative analysis of two interpretive approaches to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Namely, Phyllis Gorfain’s approach, formulated with reference to interpretive anthropology (to a large degree inspired by Victor Turner’s anthropology of experience), and René Girard’s approach, formulated with reference to his concept of mimetic anthropology. Those two different readings of Shakespeare’s play as an expressive text (that is expressing the problems of our culture), bring also the question of how Hamlet as a reflexive text can provoke anthropological self‑consciousness, both in theory and practice. According to Gorfain, the main character’s cognitive situation proves paradigmatic above all to anthropologists’ self‑knowledge concerning maintaining the balance between experiencing and interpreting another culture, between reaching for truth about a given culture and falling into interpretive illusions. For Girard, the main character’s cognitive situation becomes first and foremost the mirror of contemporary culture, particularly with regard to the unresolved problem of violence and acting in revenge, or refraining from both. The thematic frame of the article is defined by the Shakespeare’s evocation of the theatrum mundi topos and a reflection on the functionalization of the topos in the description of culture through the prism of two anthropologies: interpretive and mimetic.

Pisarz wykorzystał stereotyp i mit wypracowane w XIX wieku, przenosząc je na dwie postaci głównych bohaterów. W powojennej korespondencji ze Stanisławem Vincenzem, autorem cyklu Na wysokiej połoninie, aluzyjne odwołania do Huculszczyzny Wittlin wiąże z własną sytuacją osobistą na emigracji. Autor opracowania stawia pytanie o związek, jaki istnieje między wątkami huculskimi w tekstach należących do historii literatury i w egodokumentach. Metodą, która pozwala opisać tę relację, jest antropologia doświadczenia wywodząca się z hermeneutyki Wilhelma Diltheya, a rozwinięta przez Edwarda M. Brunera. W dwóch powieściowych dziełach Józefa Wittlina, w Soli ziemi i zachowanym fragmencie Zdrowej śmierci, znajdują się liczne odniesienia do tematyki huculskiej (Huculszczyzny i wschodniokarpackich górali). Pisarz wykorzystał stereotyp i mit wypracowane w XIX wieku, przenosząc je na dwie postaci głównych bohaterów. W powojennej korespondencji ze Stanisławem Vincenzem, autorem cyklu Na wysokiej połoninie, aluzyjne odwołania do Huculszczyzny Wittlin wiąże z własną sytuacją osobistą na emigracji.     У двох повістях Юзефа Віттліна, в «Солі землі» та у збереженому фрагменті «Здорової смерті», знаходяться численні посилання на гуцульську тематику (Гуцульщина та її мешканці гуцули). Письменник застосував стереотипи і міфи, які вже використовувалися у ХІХ столітті, переносячи їх на дві постаті головних героїв. В післявоєнній кореспонденції з Станіславом Вінцензем, автором циклу «На високій полонині», ці згадки та звертання до Гуцульщини, Віттлін пов’язує з власною особистою ситуацією на еміграції. Автор статті ставить питання про зв›язок, який існує між гуцульськими мотивами в текстах, що належать вже до історії літератури і цих мотивів в егодокументах. Це метод, що дозволяє проаналізувати цю взаємозалежність є антропологією пережитого і походить з герменевтики Вільгельма Дільтея, удосконалений Едвардом М. Брунером.
    Two novels by Józef Wittlin: Sól ziemi (The Salt of the Earth) and the preserved fragment of Zdrowa śmierć (Healthy Death) contain numerous references to the Hutsul motifs (The Hutsul Land and the Eastern Carpathian highlanders). The writer applied the stereotype and the myth established in the 19th century onto to the two main characters. In the post-war correspondence with Stanisław Vincenz, the author of the series Na wysokiej połoninie (On the High Uplands), Wittlin connects the allusive references with his personal situation in exile. The author of the paper poses questions about the connection among the Hutsul topics in the texts from the history of literature and egodocuments, describing it through the lenses of the anthropology of experience derived from Wilhelm Dilthey’s hermeneutics, further developed by Edward M. Bruner.

    Reflecting on the place, rank and interpretation of the philosophical thought of Karol Wojtyła, the fact that the author, philosopher, educationist and dramatist was first a priest and later, for a quarter century, was the head of the Catholic Church cannot be dismissed. The choice of service to God as the life path defined and determined the directions of intellectual quests. The human person was in the centre of philosophical considerations by Karol Wojtyła. He sees the human being as immersed in God and simultaneously as the integral, spiritual and bodily being. The thesis that the man in this structure composes himself through the axiological and moral dimension was an important statement in his views. The moral perspective represented the attempt by Wojtyła at defining man through discovering his structures and experiencing his morality. The philosopher ex-presses this in his dissertation “The Acting Person” (“Osoba i czyn”) published first in 1969 and reprinted under the symptomatic title “The Acting Person and other anthropological studies” (“Osoba i czyn oraz inne studia antropologic-zne”).

    This paper brings close the human hermeneutic horizons of autonomous man and theonomous man, i.e. those approaches that result from the experience of transcendence or its lack. In its conception of man, Christianity takes Incarnation as its starting point. In the light of Incarnation, transcendence and immanence are mixed in the life and Person of Jesus Christ. Christianity is not an ideology, but it stresses the historical and personal experience of God-Man whose Person and life compose the foundation on which to understand the whole of reality. It is on this view that our perception of ethics depends. Ethics is different if this point is disregarded. However, ethics should always have primacy over politics. In order to cherish an overall human scope, ethics should be based on integral anthropology that respects all dimensions of the person: individual, social, spiritual, religious, the internal and external aspects. Contemporary personalism emphasises all the essential traits of the person, among which we find transcendence, freedom, relational and dialogical character. The person is fulfilled in relations because it is a relationship with regard to his or her essence. Christian ethics that is built on the foundation of personalistic anthropology recognises the dimension of human transcendence, especially in relation to persons and values. It does not reject, however, a different point of view, but at the same time disagrees to any discrimination of its position in the world of human values. A patient and concrete dialogue, such that aims at the good of every human being is the foundation of scientific ecumenism. This integral model of reality open to the dignity of each person and his social dimension is given by personalism. Only in the perspective of the person can we build a level of understanding and this should be a universal principle.

    The article presents an analysis of selected elements of the Chorea Theatre Association play entitled Grotowski - An Attempt to Retreat. The discussion starts with the mutual relations between a series of ideas in contemporary theatrological discourse: the performance, the actor-performer and the actor-character. In the course of the argument, the categories ‘theatre of an attempt’ and ‘processual montage principle’ are introduced and used in the context of the issues involved in theatrical events and experiences. The first term refers to the contemporary theatrical practice of treating a theatre event as a sort of anthropological experiment, and the second refers to the compositional technique characteristic of this approach. The ‘theatre of an attempt’ formula, as a situation of confrontation in the tripartite structure of actor, viewer and stage-action reality, allows the anthropological dynamic of the theatre event, whose integral component is the mental activity of the spectator, to be captured. The ‘processual montage principle’ relates not only to the construction of the spectacle and the actor’s actions, but also to the attitudes and actions of the cognitive spectator, who, in participating in the theatrical process of becoming must himself attempt an imaginative reflection of this process. In conclusion, an interpretation of the play in the context of the ‘Everyman’ morality tradition is suggested.
