    In this paper, the degree of contamination of water was determined from anthropogenic reservoirs, located in the area of former coal mine Rozbark in Bytom. The physicochemical analysis of water indicated a high degree of anthropopression. In all analyzed reservoirs, permissible concentrations of chlorides and sulphates were exceeded. In the majority of them, the values of electrical conductivity and total suspended solids were also exceeded. In order to determine the transformation of surface water contamination, there was a comparison of archival data of water quality and laboratory tests performed after five years. Comparative analysis shows that in the last five years, there has been no improvement in the quality of the analyzed surface waters. In fact deterioration of the quality was noticeable.

    Z przeprowadzonej analizy zagospodarowania zlewni zbiorników zaporowych w Nieliszu (zlewnia rolnicza) i Rybniku (zlewnia zurbanizowana) wynika, że warunki środowiskowe i antropogeniczne w zlewniach obydwu zbiorników są istotnie różne, co ma odzwierciedlenie w zanieczyszczeniu osadów dennych. Osady denne skumulowane w analizowanych zbiornikach różniły się pod względem wartości podstawowych wskaźników (substancje organiczne, biogeny, makroelementy), a także zawartości metali ciężkich oraz trwałych związków organicznych. Największe wartości większości analizowanych wskaźników zanieczyszczenia osadów dennych oznaczono w przypadku zbiornika w Rybniku. Wyjątek stanowiły azot ogólny, substancje organiczne, wapń, magnez, rtęć, lindan i DDE. Zanieczyszczenia mające charakter antropogeniczny, takie jak WWA i PCB, występowały w osadach ze zbiornika w Rybniku w ilościach dwukrotnie większych niż w osadach ze zbiornika w Nieliszu. Znaczna kumulacja cynku, kadmu i ołowiu może być wynikiem przemysłowego zagospodarowania zlewni zbiornika rybnickiego. Arsen, miedź i rtęć, których średnie geometryczne stężenia były większe w osadach dennych ze zbiornika w Nieliszu traktowane są jako zanieczyszczenia pochodzenia rolniczego.
    Analysis of land development in the drainage areas of the Nielisz dam reservoir (rural drainage area) and Rybnik dam reservoir (urban drainage area) has revealed significant differences in the environmental and anthropogenic conditions between them, which are reflected in the pollution of bottom sediments. The bottom sediments in the two reservoirs differed in the values of main pollution parameters (organic substances, nutrients and macroelements), as well as in the concentrations of heavy metals and durable organic compounds. Except for total nitrogen, organic matter, calcium, magnesium, mercury, lindane and DDE, the highest concentrations of the pollutants being analyzed were measured in the Rybnik dam reservoir. In the Rybnik dam reservoir, bottom-sediment concentrations of anthropogenic pollutants such as PAHs and PCB were twice as high as in the Nielisz dam reservoir. The comparatively high accumulation of zinc, cadmium and lead seems to be attributable to the industrial activities in the drainage area of the Rybnik dam reservoir. Arsenic, copper and mercury, whose geometrical means of concentration were higher in the bottom sediments from the Nielisz dam reservoir, are regarded as pollutants associated with agricultural activities.

    The article presents changes in the thickness and duration of the ice cover found in the restored anthropogenic water reservoir of Pławniowice. It also defines the role the ice cover plays in the formation of the reservoir limnological cycle. Characteristic and significant changeability of the ice cover thickness and duration was observed. The changes in the ice cover demonstrate that they are cyclical but not regular. The ice cover did not always form in the analyzed period. It happened twice, i.e. in 1988 and 2007 (a gap of 20 years). The longest lake freezing period lasted 119 days. Changes in the ice cover duration also show certain periodicity. The shortest periods occurred approx. every 7 years. Maximum values of the ice cover thickness ranged between 10 and 52 cm. There is a relation between the ice cover thickness and its duration period. The rate of increase in the ice cover thickness varied between 0.296 and 3.6 cm/d. The hypolimnion removal impact on the ice cover duration period and thickness was not observed. On the other hand, the ice cover duration period affects the spring circulation duration. Thus, it has an influence on the oxygen balance of the limnic ecosystem.
    W artykule przedstawiono zmiany okresu występowania oraz grubości pokrywy lodowej rekultywowanego antropogenicznego zbiornika wodnego w Pławniowicach. Określono rolę pokrywy lodowej w kształtowaniu cyklu limnologicznego zbiornika. Stwierdzono charakterystyczną, znaczną zmienność długości okresu występowania oraz grubości pokrywy lodowej. Zmiany grubości pokrywy lodowej wskazują na ich cykliczny, choć nie regularny charakter W analizowanym okresie dwukrotnie, w odstępie 20 lat (1988, 2007) stwierdzono brak pokrywy lodowej. Najdłuższy okres zlodzenia wynosił 119 dni. Zmiany długości okresu występowania pokrywy lodowej również wykazują pewną cykliczność. W tym przypadku najkrótsze okresy występowały, co około 7 lat. Maksymalne wartości miąższości pokrywy lodowej w poszczególnych latach wynosiły od 10 cm do 52 cm. Miąższość pokrywy lodowej pozostaje w zależności od czasu jej występowania. Szybkość przyrostu grubości pokrywy lodowej zmieniała się od 0,296 cm/d do 3,6 cm/d. Nie stwierdzono wpływu usuwania hypolimnionu na długość okresu występowania oraz miąższość pokrywy lodowej. Długość okresu występowania pokrywy lodowej wpływa na czas trwania cyrkulacji wiosennej. Ma zatem wpływ na bilans tlenowy ekosystemu limnicznego.

    The paper presents results of geobotanic studies conducted in anthropogenic water bodies like excavation ponds, fish culture ponds, other ponds, dam reservoirs, ditches, channels and recreational pools incl. watering places in Opole Silesia and surroundings in the years 2002-2005. The research focused on occurrence of threatened and rare pondweed communities. As the result of the investigations of several dozen of water bodies, 28 localities of rare pondweed communities were documented by 75 phytosociological relevés. Associations of Potametum trichoidis J. et R Tx. in R. Tx. 1965, Potametum praelongi Sauer 1937, P. alpini Br.-Bl. 1949, P. acutifolii Segal 1961, P. obtusifolii (Carst. 1954) Segal 1965 and P. perfoliati W. Koch 1926 em. Pass. 1964 were found as well as communities formed by Potamogeton berchtoldii, P. nodosus and P. pusillus. The study confirms that anthropogenic reservoirs could serve as last refugees for many threatened pondweed communities, which decline or even extinct in their natural habitats. The results indicate that man-made habitats could shift the range limits of threatened species and support their dispersal. The authors conclude that habitats strongly transformed by man are important factors in the natural syntaxonomical diversity protection and should not be omitted in strategies of nature conservation.

    The paper deals with sediments of anthropogenic reservoirs from the central part of the Katowice Upland. Over most of the area, the original relief was considerably altered due to many-years’ mining of hard coal, historical mining and processing of zinc-lead ores, smelting of iron and non-ferrous metals, and chemical and machinery industries. The changes in land surface give rise to mining collapse areas transformed to water reservoirs. Sediment samples (103 samples in total) were collected form artificial lakes, ponds and settling ponds. Samples were air-dried, sieved through a 0.2-mm nylon sieve and digested in aqua regia. Contents ofAg, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, P Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, Vand Zn in the samples were determined by the ICP-OES method. Mercury content was measured using the CV-AAS method. To assess the extent of sediment contamination the Index of Geoaccumulation (Igeo) and the ecotoxicological (Threshold Effect Concentration and Probable Effect Concentration) criterion were used. The sediments show very different chemical compositions. The content of trace elements varies from values lower than the regional geochemical background of the Silesian-Cracow region to extremely high concentrations. Distribution of many toxic chemical elements is characterized by high spatial variability and a strong dependence on the location of pollution sources. About 60% of analysed samples were heavily contaminated due to the very high concentration of cadmium (up to 905.9 mg/kg), lead (up to 25,081 mg/kg) and zinc (up to 45,361 mg/kg) as well as arsenic (up to 2,220 mg/kg), chromium (up to 901 mg/kg) and mercury (up to 11.80 mg/kg). Due to the concentration of metals (TEC and PEC values) almost 80% of the sediments can be harmful to aquatic organisms, as well as to wild animals that consume them. The main cause of harm is the very high concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc, less of silver, arsenic, chromium, copper and nickel.

    W pracy omówiono zmiany warunków wodnych spowodowane budową stopni piętrzących w dolnym biegu Wdy. Najsilniejsze przekształcenia związane są z funkcjonowaniem kaskady hydroenergetycznej Żur-Gródek. Jej obecność spowodowała znaczne zwiększenie powierzchni zbiorników wodnych oraz przekształcenie reżimu Wdy poniżej kaskady. Na odcinkach zbiornikowych, a w szczególności w Zbiorniku Żur ma miejsce akumulacja materiału wnoszonego przez Wdę i jej dopływy. Wskutek wykorzystania hydroenergetycznego, poniżej kaskady wzrosła nieregularność przepływów, co powoduje zmiany warunków życia biologicznego w korycie. Znaczne i częste wahania przepływów są też przyczyną uruchamiania rumowiska, które akumulowane jest w kolejnym zbiorniku - Kozłowo i na odcinku Wdy powyżej tego zbiornika. Pomimo pewnych negatywnych aspektów zbiorniki zaporowe, w połączeniu z otaczającymi lasami, stanowią atrakcyjny element krajobrazu doliny Wdy i główną atrakcję Wdeckiego Parku Krajobrazowego.
    The paper presents the changes of water conditions in the lower part of the Wda river, caused by the construction of barrages. The strongest transformation are connected with the use of the water power stations Żur and Gródek. This two barrages caused considerable enlargement of the water areas and changed regime of the Wda river downstream the Gródek dam. The bed load from the Wda river and their tributaries has been accumulating in the reservoirs, especially in the Żur reservoir. The outflow irregularity increased in the part of the Wda river downstream of the cascade, as the effect of using water for power stations. Large and frequent changes in the volume of the flow cause decrease of the number of species and the size of populations in the Wda river. Despite of some negative aspects reservoirs and their surrounding there are the most attractive element of the Wda valley landscape and the main attraction of the Wda Landscape Park.

    This contribution reviews available evidence of recent changes in the sediment loads of the world’s rivers and identifi es the key drivers of such change. Land clearance, land use change and other facets of catchment disturbance, soil conservation and sediment control programmes and dam construction are shown to have resulted in signifi cant recent changes in the sediment loads of many world rivers. Some rivers have been characterized by signifi cant increases in sediment load, whereas others show signifi cant decreases. Interpretation of the resulting trends requires consideration of aggregation and storage and buffering effects within a river basin, such that the downstream response of a river may not clearly refl ect the changes occurring in the upstream basin and in the loads of tributary rivers.
    W artykule przedstawiono dostępne informacje wskazujące na aktualne zmiany w ładunku rumowiska rzek świata oraz wskazano na podstawowe czynniki powodujące te zmiany. Wycinanie lasów, zmiany użytkowania terenu, a także inne działania związane zarówno z degradacją, jak i ochroną gruntów, oraz programy redukcji erozji gleb i budowa zapór, znacząco wpływają na ładunki rumowiska wielu rzek świata. Niektóre rzeki charakteryzują się znaczącym wzrostem ilości rumowiska, podczas gdy inne wskazują na znaczący ich spadek. Interpretacja wynikowych trendów wymaga rozważenia czynników mających cechy oddziaływania zagregowanego, opóźnionego i buforującego z całej zlewni, jako że informacje z ujściowych odcinków rzek nie w pełni odzwierciedlają zmiany zachodzące w górnej części rzeki i w jej dopływach.
