    The objective of this study was to learn to what degree the afforestations affected the seasonal dynamics and changes in population abundance of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Hartm.). The beetles were caught in traps in the Człuchowska Primeval Forest in 1998−1999. A total of 51 814 individuals of A. stercorosus were caught. The obtained results have shown that the peak activity of this beetle falls on June and September, and the optimal habitat conditions are poletimber and mature stands. A. stercorosus colonised coniferous stands growing on former agricultural lands more frequently than the same stands growing on forest lands.

    In 2007 and 2008 research on the impact of temperature, ranging from 14 to 39°C on the survivability of an adult Anoplotrupes stercorosus intoxicated by insecticide preparations from the group of phosphoorganic insecticides (diazinon), carbamate (pirimicarb), quinazolines (fenazaquin), oxadiazine (indoxacarb), benzoyl urea insecticides (teflubenzuron), neonicotinoids (acetamiprid) and pyrethroids (beta-cyfluthrin) was carried out. The results obtained indicate that all preparations used in tests had a positive temperature coefficient.
    W 2007 i 2008 r. przeprowadzono badania wpływu temperatury w zakresie 14-34°C na przeżywalność dorosłych osobników Anoplotrupes stercorosus intoksykowanych preparatami owadobójczymi z grup: insektycydów fosfoorganicznych (diazynon), karbaminianów (pirymikarb), chinozalin (fenazachina), indenooksadiazyn (indoksakarb), pochodnych benzoilomocznika (teflubenzuron), neonikotynoidów (acetamipryd) i pyretroidów (beta-cyflutryna). Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że wszystkie zastosowane preparaty charakteryzowały się dodatnim współczynnikiem temperaturowym. Temperatura 34°C okazała się być bardzo silnym synergetykiem dla wszystkich zastosowanych insektycydów.

    In Poland, Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Scriba) and Trypocopris vernalis (L.), are very common throughout the whole country and belong to the most numerous representatives of the Geotrupidae family. Research on the habitat selectivity of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Scriba) and Trypocopris vernalis (L.) was conducted in the years 2004-2006 in the Wipsowo Forest Inspectorate (Regional Forest Department in Olsztyn). The dung beetles were collected using Barber traps installed in a clear-cut comprising, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 16 year old thickets and tree-stands aged 30, 45, 60, 80, 100 and 135 years. According to phytosociology these tree-stands are a plant community of fresh continental pine forest (Peucedano-Pinetum), while typologically all sites are within the fresh coniferous forest. During the course of this research 29197 individual dung beetles were captured, including 23137 individuals of A. stercorosus and 6060 individuals of T. vernalis. Both species were caught at each research site. At nearly all sites A. stercorosus dominated. Only within the clear-cut area were the number of T. vernalis was higher than at other sites. Very many individuals of T. vernalis were present in the clear-cut area but their numbers decreased gradually with increasing tree-stand age. An opposite situation was noted for A. stercorosus. There was an interesting statistically-significant decrease in the abundance of both species in the middle-aged tree-stands – 30, 45 and 60-year-old. Analyzing the seasonal dynamics revealed one peak in the population of T. vernalis in July, whereas there were two peaks in the population of A. stercorosus: a small peak in July and a much larger peak in September. There was a significant negative correlation between the numbers of T. vernalis and tree-stand age (p<0.05, r =-0.57), and a significant positive correlation between the A. stercorosus population size and tree-stand age (p<0.05, r = 0.48).

    Opis:
    The catch rate and body length of Anoplotrupes stercorosus and Trypocopris vernalis were studied in 2018 on permanent plots established in 2003 in Scots pine stands left for spontaneous succession in the Piska Forest (N Poland). The plots comprised treatment A – severely disturbed stands (canopy cover of 10−30%), treatment B – moderately disturbed stands (canopy cover of 40−60%) and treatment C – the least disturbed stands in which all or nearly all trees survived (canopy cover of 70−90%). Each treatment class was replicated six times. In addition, we included a Scots pine plantation established in 2006 after the soil preparation as a stand in the earliest phase of succession. The following hypotheses were set: (1) severity of stand disturbance affects the body size of both species and (2) in the surviving remnants of stands (later phase of succession development) the body length of both species is greater than in disturbed stands and in the young plantation. No differences between the catch rate of both species in different treatments was detected (tab. 1 and 2). However we found significantly longer body of T. vernalis. The increase in the difference between the length of both species in the least disturbed stands as well as in the late stages of stand development was found (fig. 1 and 2). The direct effect of the LAI and inversely proportional effect of soil temperature on the catch rate and length of the body of A. stercorosus and, to a lesser extent, T. vernalis were observed (fig. 1). The high catch rate of A. stercorosus and the length of its body was linked with the soil covered only with forest litter (which occurs in dense stands with a high LAI index) (fig. 2). The catch rate of T. vernalis was correlated with the predominant nitrophilous Deschampsia fexuosa, which suggests the preferential occurrence of T. vernalis in ‘open’ stands with a high level of solar radiation. In turn, the length of T. vernalis body correlated with a high proportion of Calluna vulgaris, which may suggest a dependence of this parameter on light reaching the soil. The above observations indicate that in the production cycle of Scots pine stands, T. vernalis prefers open stands (especially clear−cuts, young plantations), while A. stercorosus is more often met in dense stands. The catch rate of both species is not suitable for zooindication research, while the length of their body is suitable. The higher the stage of ecological successive of the pine stand, the greater the difference in the body length of these species.
