The field of cultural management is gaining more and more attention in academic discourse, but as a field of research it still remains mostly unexplored. It can be located somewhere between pedagogy, cultural studies and culture an-thropology. It is based on the process of animation which is distinguished by complex cultural and social contexts. The essence of animation has its source domain in France. It has been triggered by social rebellions and it stems from the idea of emancipation. People have wished to change their cultural embeddings and wanted to overcome their cultural barriers. Therefore, the notion of emancipation is a very important issue while discussing the beginnings of the cultural animation. Nowadays it is quite problematic to determine the scope and range of social animation. The whole process of animation touches almost every aspect of life. Animators of culture serve many important social functions, but apparently there is no agreement on the exact extent of their responsibilities. This short paper attempts to present the essential aspects of theory and practice concerning the notion of social animation and espe-cially the functions of the animators of culture.

Opis:
The text has got a form of explanation and review. Its purpose is to explain and sort out notions which are attributable to animation of culture and its relation to creativity. In the first part of the text the theoretical background has been presented. The review of contemporary conceptions of creativity from the area of pedagogy and psychology has been done. In the further part the author has reviewed the conceptions and recognized the notions related to creative attitude of a human. Regarding the presented assumptions, the animation of culture has been presented as a process which facilitates the development of creative attitude and potential resources which human being has at his/her disposal or is able to have. The author points out that this conception is built on the foundations of Western humanism and postmodernism and the vision of our social life they propose. The author believes that the animators should be close to the wide understanding of creativity as every kind of activity which transcends simple scheme. In the text the animation of culture is presented as the process that is focused on supporting human being in striving for the complete self-realization which Abraham Maslow wrote about. The animator, from the author’s point of view, acts as the facilitator of creative processes. He is a catalyst of the creative attitude which is widely interpreted and helps to build self-consciousness of a human. Creativity has been presented as a significant conceptual category defining animation activities. In the text the idea has been presented that each animation of culture implicates emanation of creative potential of human being, which corresponds with humanistic theories of creativity of A. Maslow, C. Rogers and E. Fromm.

Ethnoanimation connects ethnographic research and culture animation. This method has been developed for ten years by Tomasz Rakowski, The Field Collective and author of the text. The last project where the method was tested was the laboratory known as the “Local dimensions of cultural participation. Ethnographic action research”, Warsaw University within a larger framework of a Ministry of Culture grant “Creating bottom-up culture”. In this project students and The Field Collective created an ethnoanimation project in the villages of Zaława and Cukrówka in Poland. They reflected upon them by putting them on an “animation zip” diagram according to the level of cohesion between animation and ethnography in their projects. The “animation zip” as an useful tool that may be interpreted inthe context of “best practices” of culture animation defined by National Culture Centre to define typical features of ethnoanimation practices. In this text the author tries to answer the question–what makes an ethnoanimation project most effective.

12 marca 2020 roku sztab kryzysowy z udziałem ministra kultury i dziedzictwa narodowego wprowadził w Polsce lockdown. Dla większości instytucji był to początek aktywności w zupełnie innych warunkach i przymus redefinicji dotychczasowych działań. Przez blisko trzy miesiące instytucje kultury pozbawione możliwości normalnej, stacjonarnej pracy musiały się zmierzyć z wyzwaniem funkcjonowania on-line. Szybko okazało się, że retransmisje wydarzeń, przypominanie archiwalnych nagrań ze spotkań autorskich i wirtualne spacery nie są rozwiązaniem, które na długo jest w stanie utrzymać uwagę publiczności. W celem tekstu jest przyjrzenie się warunkom i metodom, w jakich kultura, a zarazem edukacja może i powinna być dziś realizowana. Na tle prowadzonych przez polskie instytucje kultury działań animacyjnych i edukowania w nowej formie przedstawiony został przykład działań prowadzonych w Lublinie, przez Ośrodek „Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN”, który od końca lat 90. wykorzystuje w swoich działaniach Internet i nowe technologie do przekazywania wiedzy o historii i lokalnym dziedzictwie kulturowym. Autorzy w artykule szukają odpowiedzi na pytania czy instytucje kultury są przygotowane do działań z użyciem nowych technologii oraz jak realizują cele edukacji humanistycznej.
On March 12, 2020, the crisis staff with the Minister of Culture and National Heritage introduced a lockdown in Poland. For most cultural institutions, it was the beginning of activity in completely different conditions and a necessity to redefine the activities. For nearly three months, cultural institutions deprived of the possibility of normal stationary work. They had to face the challenge of operating on-line. It quickly turned out that retransmissions of events, recalling archival recordings and virtual walks are not solutions that can keep the audience’s attention for a long time. The aim of the text is to examine the conditions and methods in which culture, and education, can and should be realized today. The article presents an example of activities carried out in Lublin by the “Grodzka Gate - NN Theater” Center, which since the late 1990s uses the Internet and new technologies in history and local cultural heritage. The authors of the article look for answers to the questions how cultural institutions are prepared to operate with the use of new technologies and how they implement the goals of humanities education.

This article focuses on the issue of the cultural animation among adults from the perspective of the participants in the animation processes. The study was developed on the basis of group interviews carried out in five workshop groups operating within cultural centres in Lublin (a drama group, painting, film and dancing workshops, and a music band). The animation activities were presented from the perspective of the opportunities and limitations associated with adulthood. An attempt was made to define the characteristics of the animation of culture among adults, which, as the study shows, can be described as a way of supporting the socio-cultural activity, communication, integration and creativity of adults. Animation understood in such terms is primarily based on the following principles: dialogue, autonomy, cooperation, empowerment, respect for otherness and the right to be different. The study also discusses the functions of the cultural animation among adults, serving such purposes as communication and integration, education, participation, recreation and escapism, self-fulfilment, transgression, consolidation and socialisation. Moreover, the role of the animator of culture among adults and their most demanded skills are described.

The author analyzes values which appear in the profession of a culture animator and presents classifications of values of animation. He shows the world of values in the profession of a culture animator, as well as the essence of this kind of career in the light of formation of values among receivers of culture. The essence in the message is one’s own view on life, which is tantamount to one’s own system of values in a private and professional life. The message which the author (animator) is governed by – not with action, not with voice, but with heart – and which is complemented with the thought – “Animator, animate yourself ” – is addressed to culture animators in the aspect of professional mastering and improving the quality of work, but also the peace of private life in the context of the values which are presented.

Cultural centre as an institution promoting culture among adultsCultural institutions are established to fulfil three major functions: creating, promoting and protecting culture. Of those three the main function of cultural centres is promotion. Unfortunately, the latest studies show that those centres do not pay enough attention to older people who have a lot of free time and are financially stable. It is important for cultural centres’ workers, who create curricula for their facilities, to take into consideration the recipients, their needs, interests, how much time and money they can spend in the cultural centre. Information about offered classes should get to those recipients in the right way and on time. The elements change depending on the recipients’ age. Adults are more aware of their interests than teenagers or children, therefore it is essential for the cultural centres to consider their needs in the curriculum. Unfortunately, adults and especially older people are very rarely active in social and cultural life. They prefer to spend their free time in passive or even monotonous way. It is probably due to a lack of a proper “preparation” to the old age. The preparation should begin from the youngest age and should include five fields of activity: biological, psychological, intellectual, social and economic. In order to ensure the right way of preparation, both cultural institutions and their recipients should increase the amount of free time older people spend in cultural centres. It is extremely important especially for older people whose ways of spending spare time may protect them from loneliness and alienation.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie działań performatywnych Interdyscyplinarnej Placówki Twórczo-Badawczej „Pracownia”, która działała w Olsztynie i na Warmii na przełomie lat siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych XX wieku. Jest on wynikiem badań etnograficznych i kwerend archiwalnych dotyczących źródeł polskiej animacji kultury rozumianej jako badania w działaniu i badania przez sztukę. Kategorią organizującą wywód jest brud rozumiany metaforycznie jako continuum „oczyszczania” i „zabrudzania” charakterystyczne dla „Pracowni”. Rozpoczęcie pracy twórczej wymagało często „oczyszczenia” terenu, ale nie po to, by pozbyć się brudu, lecz by „brać go prosto w ręce”, poznać go i z nim pracować. Brud łączył członków „Pracowni” z ziemią i umożliwiał działanie zgodne z aktywistyczną „regułą geografii” – zakorzeniające i derytualizujące. Był domeną pracy, łączył z ludźmi, a także pozwalał lepiej poznać siebie – w trudzie, w niewygodzie, w relacjach. Brud wybijał z mentalnych przyzwyczajeń, wzmagał krytyczny ogląd rzeczywistości – politycznej, społecznej, geograficznej, mieszkaniowej. Wreszcie – wzmagał oddolną kreatywność, umożliwiał tworzenie miejsc/skupisk ważnych i inspirujących do wymiany myśli. To też działanie subwersywne, schronienie, kryjówka – kiedy brud używany był jako kamuflaż i wchodził w relacje z otoczeniem, pozwalając na „marsz przez instytucje” tworząc demokratyczne organizacje społeczno-kulturowe.
This article is devoted to the analysis of the performative activities of the Interdisciplinary Creative Research Center “Pracownia,” which was active in Olsztyn and the region of Warmia at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. It presents the results of ethnographic and archival research on the traditions of Polish cultural animation understood as research in action and research through art. The organizing category of the text is dirt, understood metaphorically as a continuum of “cleansing” and “making dirty,” characteristic of this group. Starting creative work often required “clearing” the area, but not to get rid of dirt, but to “take it straight into your hands,” get to know it and work with it. Dirt connected the members of “Pracownia” with the soil and land and enabled them to act in accordance with the activist “rule of geography”: rooting and deritualizing. It was the domain of work, it connected them with local people and also allowed them to know themselves better—in hardship, in discomfort, in relationships. Dirt knocked them out of mental habits ruts and, increased the critical view of reality—political, social, geographical, focused on concerning the problem of housing. It enhanced bottom-up creativity, enabled the creation of households/clusters that were important and inspired the exchange of ideas. Finally, it is also a subversive action, a shelter, a hiding place— when dirt was used as camouflage and came into played with the environment, allowing the “march through institutions” to create democratic social and cultural organizations.

Ich analiza i dekonstrukcja są dla autora tekstu podstawą do prowadzenia rozważań nad kształtem tożsamości współczesnych animatorów kultury.
The article deals with selected processes taking place in contemporary cultural space. These phenomena have profound impact on the quality of social inclusion, the level of cultural participation, and the identity formation and cultural awareness of citizens, which are the fundamental determinants of the design and conduct of animation in the local environment. To the author, analysis and deconstruction of these processes the basis for the discussion of the identity of modern cultural animators.

Opis:
The article presents the problem area of animation as a pedagogical method of working in the environment which is differentiated as regards its social, cultural and regional aspects. The environmental diagnosis is meant to identify local capitals which can offer support for a group of animators participating in the socio-cultural project, whose goal was activation of the examined local community. The author shows the role of the institution of culture functioning in the region of cultural and ethnic frontier in the social reception.
W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie animacji jako pedagogicznej metody pracy środowiskowej w środowisku zróżnicowanym społecznie, kulturowo i regionalnie. Diagnoza środowiskowa pozwala identyfikować lokalne kapitały mogące stanowić oparcie dla grupy animatorów uczestniczących w projekcie społeczno-kulturalnym, którego celem była aktywizacja badanej społeczności lokalnej. W opracowaniu tym ukazana jest także rola instytucji kultury w regionie pogranicza kulturowego i etnicznego w odbiorze społecznym.
