Opis:: Objectives The aim of this study has been to investigate the frequency of sensitization to horse allergens and clinical symptoms in horse riders. Material and Methods A total of 42 horse riders and 50 healthy individuals were examined by means of skin prick tests for a panel of horse and common animal allergens, and pulmonary function tests were done by spirometry. Results The rate of sensitization to horse allergens was 31% as proven by the skin prick test in horse riders whereas horse sensitization was not seen in the control group. Occupational allergy symptoms were reported by 19 horse riders. Two horse riders with no history of clinical symptoms showed positive skin reactions to horse allergens. Conclusions To decrease the high risk of occupational sensitization among horse riders, workplace conditions should be improved to reduce the load of airborne horse allergens.

Opis:: The purpose of this study was to assess the positive immediate reactions received from intradermal skin tests (IDST) which confirmed the presence of IgE-dependent hypersensitivity in dogs with atopic dermatitis, which were patients of the Dermatology Consulting Section at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin between 2007 and 2009. Intradermal skin tests were performed on 142 dogs (72 females and 70 males) from the Lublin voivodeship of different breeds ranging in age from 1 to 6 years (average 2.8 years). The allergen set used in this study was the Artuvetrin Test (ARTU Biologicals Europe B.V, Holland). The owners of 84 dogs observed the presence of skin lesions all year round regardless of season, while 58 dog owners noted them only in spring and summer. Most immediate positive reactions were ascertained from mite allergens (70.61%), fewer from pollen allergens (19.55%), and the fewest from animal (4.15%) and mould allergens (1.66%). Immediate positive reactions for a flea allergen (4.03% of all positive reactions) were also ascertained. In 98.6% of dogs polysensitization was found.

Opis:: Several studies published in the last 20 years have shown that complex communities of microbes, known as the microbiome, inhabit the different sites of the human and animal body. Due to these new concepts, Lederberg coined the term microbiome in 2000, describing a more “ecologically-informed metaphor” to better understand and describe the relationship between human hosts and their microbes. This article synthetically presents the results of research on the skin microbiome in animals in physiological states and in periods of health imbalance. Small number of studies that describe the skin microbiota in animals have been published to date. These have included only limited numbers of animals, rendering them rather descriptive, currently. So far, the bacterial skin microbiome has been studied in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and amphibians. In contrast, the skin mycobiome has been defined only in dogs and cats. The analysis of the literature made it possible to draw a conclusion that the skin microbiome has unique composition: it varies across body areas and a remarkable variability is seen across different individuals.

Opis:: W pracy scharakteryzowano właściwości proteolityczne preparatu enzymatycznego uzyskanego z trzustek indyczych oraz oceniono przydatność tych enzymów do degradacji skór wieprzowych. Hydrolizę enzymatyczną surowca prowadzono w środowisku o pH = 7,0, a następnie przedłużano ją o hydrolizę kwasową w pH = 3,2. Na podstawie wyników badań wykazano wysoką aktywność proteolityczną proteaz trzustkowych wobec kazeiny oraz stwierdzono aktywność wobec substratów kolagenowych. Efektywność hydrolizy enzymatycznej skór wieprzowych, wyrażona ilością uwalnianej hydroksyproliny, wolnych grup aminowych oraz białka, była kilkakrotnie większa niż hydrolizy kwasowej. Ponadto poprzez odpowiedni dobór warunków prowadzenia procesu (temperatura, pH oraz rozdrobnienie surowca) można istotnie wpływać na jego wydajność. Reasumując, enzymy z trzustek indyczych charakteryzują się wysoką aktywnością proteolityczną w stosunku do białek skór wieprzowych.
The study presents the proteolytic qualities of an enzymatic preparation obtained from turkey pancreas and the usefulness of enzymes for the degradation of pigskins. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the material was carried out at pH = 7.0, and, then, acid hydrolysis was conducted at pH = 3.2. The results indicated a high proteolytic activity of pancreas proteases towards the casein. Their activity towards collagen substrates was also observed. The efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of pigskins, expressed by the amount of freed hydroxyproline, free amine groups and protein, was several times higher than the efficiency of acid hydrolysis. Moreover, the proper selection of the process conditions (temperature, pH and material comminuting) significantly increases its efficiency. It may be concluded that the enzymes from turkey pancreas are characterized by a high proteolytic activity towards proteins from pigskins.
