Opis:
This article seeks to clarify the meaning of animal metaphors contained in Isa 31:4-5. Difficulties in interpreting these metaphors are associated with the Hebrew syntax as well as the proper reading of the symbolism of the characters and animals found within these verses. These issues also raise the question of the message of the whole prophecy: is it an oracle of doom or of salvation? The article provides an overview of previous attempts to explicate the metaphors and proposes a new interpretation of them. It turns out that Isaiah consciously and intentionally uses some ambiguous images and formulas in order to make a specific impression on the addresser. Such literary devices are characteristic of his statements from the last period of his activity (705–701 BC). The new interpretation of animal metaphors presented in this study also results from the structure of the oracle, which has emerged through the use of Hebrew rhetoric methods

Opis:
The relatively numerous references to animals in the blessing of Jacob(Gen 49: 1-28) show that the biblical author had a broad knowledge of nature.According to the current classification of living organisms and method ofresearch used by modern zoology, it is stated that these observations donot have the characteristics of scientific research. In spite of this, they arethe evidence of the clear-sighted observation of animals, which is reflectednot only in the knowledge of the appearance of individual species, but alsoof specific behaviours related to their way of life. It concerns not only domesticanimals, like the ass (cf. Gen 49: 14), but also wild representativesof the fauna. References concerning the latter apply to the species perceivedas highly dangerous to man and domestic animals, that is the lion(cf. Gen 49: 9), snake (cf. Gen 49: 17) or wolf (cf. Gen 49: 27). Amongstthe animals mentioned in the blessing of Jacob one can also distinguishthose which aroused admiration because of their appearance, such as thedoe (cf. Gen 49: 21). At the same time, it is essential to emphasise the factthat the wealth of animal metaphors is just a tool used to translate “God’saddress” into human language.

Opis:
The paper refers to the use of animal-related metaphor in the linguistic nomination of plants. This phenomenon is illustrated through numerous examples of medicinal plants’ names in Polish and Russian languages, as well as in Latin binomial nomenclature. In the process of plants’ linguistic nomination, it is fairly common to use „zoological” metaphor (metaphor involving animals’ body parts or the connotations associated with the animal given), reflecting the human perception of the world of nature as well as of the interdependence between flora and fauna. Metaphorical names are illustrative and easy to remember. Not only is metaphor a part of plants’ name-formation process, but it may also indicate how the plant is perceived in a society.

Opis:
Metaphor can manifest itself in a variety of form including the visual one, which can be an extremely expressive means of communication. That is why visual metaphors are widely used by marketers and advertisers thus becoming a topical object of linguistic research programmes. The study of visual metaphor is tightly related to the study of conceptual metaphor as the target message delivered by a picture is derived from a certain source field that is employed for metaphorical representation. Another type of metaphor commonly used in visual representation is a multimodal metaphor. The present research dwells upon the study of metaphor use in animal rights protection advertisements. The hypothesis of the study is that visual metaphors present strong content that can activate emotions and contribute to the marketers’ desire to influence the audience.

Opis:
Animalistic metaphors have been used since the dawn of times to dehumanise members of outgroups and thereby deny them their rights. The paper examines the causes and symptoms of animalistic dehumanisation through the analysis of connotations of several terms used to conceptualise undesirable individuals and groups across various cultures, focusing on four source domains: rat, cattle, wolf, and dog.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to analyse various animal-specific complex lexical units together with patterns that can be held responsible for their underlying conceptual structure. Many examples of the data investigated in the paper seem to represent compounds as they are traditionally understood in the literature of the subject (see, among others, Bauer 2003; Katamba and Stonham 2006; Lieber and Štekauer 2009; Fàbregas and Scalise 2012; Bauer et al. 2013); however, others do not meet the basic criteria for compoundhood as postulated by, for example, Altakhaineh (2016). In my research I use the term animal-specifi c complex lexical units with reference to all animal-related composite expressions being the result of the working of metaphor-metonymy interaction.
